Overall great phone, Wi-Fi & Google maps excellent, camera great.

Build quality is poor, slider has too much free play to the extent that left hand 'Navigation key' can feel it is slightly out of alignment. However, with practise & compensation this should only ever be a niggle.

I am new to Sony Ericsson phones so operating software taking a bit of getting used to but is fairly intuitive. Biggest issue is screen going dim after about 12 seconds & blank after 15. In itself not a bad feature for some applications but not at all applicable for others such as Google maps. There must of course be a setting for this but I cannot find it under General or Display settings & I can't find any power saving settings to check. As no one else has mentioned this feature it must be a setting I can't find. After all nobody would fail to mention Google maps only staying on for 15seconds before you have to hit a key! Please advise if you know where the 'Time to dim settings' are located.

Of course I could be just dim myself.

The W995 is one of the best Walkman phones that I have used over the last five years. It provides everything I need from WiFi Internet searching to your usual mobile features & of course one of the best music functionalities in a phone through their Walkman application.

What makes this phone unique is the simplicity to use (for Sony Ericsson phone users) combined with its slick design. Given that most phones are now touch screen & the rest will probably follow suit shortly, I know I will definitely be treasuring my W995 until it breaks.

One of the reasons I praise this phone is due to its attractive price. When you compare phones such as the iPhone costing around £30 a month as well as the £200 up front, only a mere £210 is required, according to some sites. Whether you're music fan or just after a phone that has physical buttons, this mobile will definitely accommodate everyone's needs.

Had this phone for just over a week now & first impressions are excellent! Certainly a big step up from my old K800i which incidentally is still going strong. The extra external speaker supplied delivers top notch sound quality & great news at last. Sony has finally fitted a 3.5mm jack so you can use whatever headphones you wish, yee haa! The screen seems huge compared to the K800i & picture quality is as you would expect from Sony. 1st class! Have got big hands or fingers so was rather sceptical about the buttons as in the pictures they looked fairly small but no worries there, they're just fine. Sound quality from the W995 is really good. The phone looks & feels good in the hand. The accelerometer is certainly a welcome addition to the W995, I like it a lot. Good to see that Sony supply an 8GB memory card with this phone too. So yeah considering it's a mid-price phone it's a cracker!

5 stars from me.

Probably the first Sony Ericsson to be close to the quality & reliability of the k800i. Reliable, decent battery life & does what it says on the tin.

GPS when I've used it has been OK, call quality good, Walkman sound quality I'd say was very good (depending what bit rate you listen, I am on 320).

Obviously not the range of support on 3rd party apps, but then still brings a reasonable amount to the party. Used gambling portals OK on this (Ladbrokes & Stan James).

I am on t mobile & it operates OK, don't bother installing the software that comes in the box, just drag & drop, it's much easier. I've had it 5 months & it's good.

Camera quality is very good, though no xenon flash, but hey, you can't have it all.

Have synced up to my mailboxes, albeit I can't have push mail as it's not supported by the network for this phone but I can easily check & viola.

Would highly recommend as a reliable phone with the scope to a lot of what the big Smartphones can do already.

My brother got this phone for me as a gift a while ago & I just love it! I must say that this is the 'best' Sony Ericsson I have ever owned. The sound quality from both the stereo speakers & the included headphones is 'superior.' What Sony Ericsson did with the stereo widening literally blew me away. I listen to a lot of smooth jazz, new age & classical music & the saxophone's highs, the relaxing melodies of new age & the many rises & falls of the pianist's works are beautifully pronounced. The build quality has a good solid feel to it & to those of you that say the sliding mechanism is too 'wobbly, ' that's the way it's supposed to be; if it wasn't, then the top & the bottom of the phone would grind together. This is my first cyber shot phone & being a 'shutter bug' I am astounded by the clarity & unsurpassed quality of the images captured by both the camera & video recorder. The power led flash is bright enough for me, no xenon needed here! For those of you that say the camera takes bad shots at night, learn how to change the camera's settings to optimize picture taking at night time, if you spent more time tinkering with the camera's features & less time putting down Sony Ericsson's phone, then you might realise what an amazing product they've pumped out! My apologies for being more than frank, that's just the way I operate. We have to remember one thing before we become too quick to criticise & that is before anything, it's 'just a phone.' the fact that all these other features (camera, music, Internet, games, etc.) come with the phone is a 'plus, ' & shouldn't be taken for granted. It's amazing enough to see how far mobile phones have evolved since the brick sized mobile phones of the old days. That being said, back to the review. Call & sound quality is excellent anywhere I travel. Sony Ericsson's user friendly streamlined menus are still existent with the search & quick menu buttons bringing the phone even more full circle in that department.

Overall, a top notch phone from Sony Ericsson & I can't wait to see what they have to offer next!

For anyone who was wondering what the H is at the top corner, its short for HSDPA, which stands for: High Speed Downlink Packet Access, & is also known as 3G+ or 3.5G. It facilitates faster download speeds than 3G & is the forunner to the upcoming 4G (even faster).

O2 , watch out if you get this phone from O2! As their branding has deleted the GPS Google Maps feature, which is one of the main reasons I got it, GRRRRR.

Instead it's got a useless fitness tracker thing on? The rest of the phone is fine, Signal No problem, although it would be better with a Xeon flash on the camera.

Sony Ericsson has made a really nice looking phone. Great music & great pictures, BUT as a phone useless. Like the old days you have to walk around looking for a signal. I have missed so many calls since I have had this phone. When making this phone they forgot it is for making & receiving calls & text. Surely that should be first priority. WAKE UP Sony.
My first phone was a pay as you go Philips, looked like a brick but as a phone it worked perfect UNLIKE the SONY ERICSSON W995, I am stuck in a contract with it now. MY BIG MISTAKE. Steer clear of it. I am on the third in 3 weeks & there are all the same. If you find yourself looking at it RUN.

I wanted one of these phone more than anything I got one on Orange approx 5 months ago what a mistake in 5 months I have had 5 replacement W995 phones due to various problems, black screen cannot do anything with the phone, freezing software & the biggest problem is signal due to Sony putting the arial in the bottom of the phone in the house the phone is useless unless you stand by a window even then I am lucky to get 2 bars & it constantly drops the call outside is better as long as I don't hold the phone as soon as I put it in my hand you watch the signal disappear what a joke, like I said I am on my 5th W995 in 5 months & they all suffer with the same problem how I have not smashed this phone off a wall is beyond me.

If you want my advise stay well clear of Orange & W995 it may be better on other networks but I cannot comment on them. You have been warned!

I have had a 5MP Nokia N95 for 2 years now & use my phone a lot for pictures so I decided it was time for an upgrade to the w995 with its 8.1MP camera!

I have to say I am very disappointed, the 5MP camera on my old phone was way better, you have to be outside on a very clear & bright day with a very steady hand to get a half decent picture.

The phone looks & feels very nice & all the other features on the phone are very good & easy to use, especially if you listen to music on your phone, but if you use your phone for pictures, don't be sucked in by the 8.1MP tag as I was, get something else

A great phone let down by the camera!

The W995 is a very nice looking phone that has many good features. I have to say that I was disappointed with its usability though. After several months of owning it, it has slowed down greatly to the point that is very frustrating. When writing texts I have to wait for the phone to catch up with me. Not only this, but the battery life if poor. Whatever you do, do not use Bluetooth headsets with the phone, it drains its battery like a plug hole.

My only one little gripe is when its closed & l press on the screen it wobbles a bit, maybe because it spring loaded, l don't know! Has anyone else experienced this!

Fantastic phone. Nice big screen with crystal clear display. Excellent sound on the Walkman with album art which makes it easier to sort through your music. Ships with 8GB memory card, high end ear buds & tube speaker. Time to ditch your MP3 players!

Rich T9 dictionary & the easiest predictive text mechanism I've ever used (& I've used a few). Has an editable list of all the words you add to the dictionary.

BBC iPlayer & YouTube easily accessible through any available Wi-Fi point. 3.5mm headphone jack in addition to Sony's proprietary headphone socket, so you can use your own headphones. Small keypad but easy to text on so no problem there.

Just a couple of gripes, Nokia have been using 16 million colours on their displays for years now & it really makes a difference. Why is Sony Ericsson so slow to catch up? GPS is pretty hopeless but no doubt these will improve.

All in all an outstanding phone, gives you everything you need & then some more, compact & easy to carry in your pocket.

Recommended.

Having been a fan of Ericsson long before Sony took over, the last few phones I've had (K850i & K800i) have left me wondering if it was time to change brand as much as I dislike Nokia recent offering from Sony Ericsson seem to me to have been released for its final product testing by the public, something I detest, the K850i & it's hideous touch screen being the bane of my life as a phone user.

Using my phone for work a decent camera would be handy for site photos, so considered the C905, but after the poor reviews here & talking to my local Orange shop (who advised me that they were discontinuing the C905 due to the large amount of recalls including the C905 Plus) I decided to try the W995 on the recommendation of the manager who also owned one.

Initial impressions out of the box, quite impressed, the phone ships with a mini speaker which is pretty good for a mini speaker, the headphones are of a good quality closed earbud type, again the quality is on par with more expensive units (I dislike closed earphones & prefer the open type that allows me to hear more of what is going on around me but that is down to personal preference). The phone also ships with & 8Mb card, nice. It also has a 3.5mm jack so can be plugged into car's aux ports etc (IMO long overdue) & the bundled earphones can be split from the bulky Sony Ericsson connector & plugged into the 3.5mm jack, also a nice touch.

The seemed initially a lot more robust than the last few offerings from Sony Ericsson, one concern is how much wobble the slide would develop, a month on making several calls a day it is still has the nice smart snick as it opens & closes, this bodes well for the future. The overall build quality seems to be a vast improvement & gives me a degree of confidence that it will last the full term of my 18 month contract & then some.

One thing that has been a real bugbear with previous Sony Ericsson phones is the Bluetooth performance the K850i in particular being appalling refusing to connect & dropping the connection mid call without rhyme or reason especially if it is a non Sony Ericsson headset. The W995 seems to be a vast improvement over this pairing, connecting & holding the connection with very little fuss, I've only had it drop a connection once & that was due to the headset's battery running out.

The software on the phone seems to run much faster with none of the hanging or wait a minute whilst I get my act together dragging that plagued my K850i, again a snappiness about the menu operation & software functions (including the camera) that makes it a pleasure to use (I wonder if Orange refraining from changing the icons from the Sony Ericsson standard to the Orange branding has also helped).

The camera is one area that Sony Ericsson has excelled at using Sony's experience from their camera division, the K850i gave very good quality pictures albeit very slow to focus & take, the W995's 8.1Mp camera gives good quality pictures (enough to blow up to A4 for site reports) & the focusing system is a lot faster & I can actually take pictures of my nephews without them running out of shot or blurring before the camera takes the picture.

The SMS menu has a conversation feature that allows you to read all the texts from one person as a conversation, it seemed like a gimmick at first, but it does come in handy especially if you do a lot of texting.

Features that are gimmicks, using the inbuilt accelerometer to change tracks & volume, something the iPhone does so everyone else wants to do (far from being a revolution having used an iPhone I found it to be never mind the function, look at the gadgets, as a work user I want function, not gadgets or a limitless bank of apps to buy).

The GPS is so so, like all phone GPS systems it uses A GPS (Assisted GPS) using a data connection to help obtain a position fix, unlike some phones on the W995 there is the option to disable this & run purely on the GPS receiver, I gather the GPS is a 4 channel receiver, hence the long time to fix & large position area (standing in a field with clear view of the sky the best fix I got was within 130 meters), in comparison with my 2005 Garmin Nuvi & it's 20 channel SIIRF Star 3 receiver giving me a 5 metre fix.

I can see that eventually like phones on cameras the technology will develop to the point it becomes more than a gadget but at the moment it isn't reliable enough to use for serious navigation (especially driving) & with the A GPS could work out very expensive depending on your tariff, the last nail in phone GPS coffin is on every phone I used it on including this one battery life takes a real beating.

The Walkman functions are very nice, the K850i being very bulky, dropping out, poor quality reception on the radio made a feature something that could have helped turn the tedium of a train commute into something more pleasant. The W995 by contrast is a much more polished affair (as one would hope, it being branded a Walkman phone) the radio is a very good RDS radio with proper RDS features such as frequency change, searching for the best freq once a station has been selected. The Walkman has good sound with a manually adjustable equaliser on it for your own preferences.

For a phone with these features I tend to get about a day & a half to two days use out it's battery, to put that into perspective that is with listening to the Walkman & radio an hour each way on the train, having a Bluetooth headset connected 8 hours a day if I'm out driving & working in areas such as basements where there is no reception so the phone is always polling to get a network connection plus some 15 to 20 calls a day.

Overall, I would consider this to be a very good effort from Sony Ericsson albeit long overdue, also the first Sony Ericsson phone in a long time I would consider recommending.

To Clarissa, from Hampshire. No, you're not the only one that can't stand greasy fingerprints over your phone, one of my many reasons for hating touch screen phones. The W995 is an outstanding phone. Well balanced when slider opened, excellent clarity & volume when making & receiving calls, & a user friendly keyboard for texting. It has a wealth of features too long to mention here, but I have to say, since the K800i, Sony Ericsson have not made a better phone. Pity there's no cover over the phone lens though, but I would still rate it as outstanding!

I got this phone yesterday, so I haven't really given it much of a chance, but so far I love it. I've been using Sony Ericsson's for over 3 years now, & this is definitely my favourite to date. I had the K850i before this, & thankfully they've got rid of the 3 touch buttons that were frankly a pain in the neck.

The pictures I've taken so far are excellent, & the sound quality is what you should expect from a Sony Walkman phone. I didn't even realise it came with speakers in the box when I bought it, so it was like Christmas had come early when I was looking through & discovered them! I also love that there's a 3.5mm jack on the top! I've been moaning for ages about phones not having them, & now this one does & it's brilliant! No more faffing around with adaptor wires!

The conversation text messaging function is really handy too. I am useless at replying quickly to texts, & often used to find myself having to save to outbox, go back to inbox, re-read, go back to outbox & finish my reply. Not a problem anymore, the whole conversation chain is right there!

There's a couple of really silly little things I'd like to see on it, such as being able to change the colour & background when text messages are displayed, & a greater selection of themes, but these are just aesthetics & nothing really do with the functionality of the phone!

One thing I've found, if you have the phone open, go back to the home screen, then close it, the keys lock. No problem. But if I am navigating with the keypad slid shut, there doesn't appear to be any way of locking the keys without opening & shutting it, or setting the automatic key lock which does a time delay lock, although I am not sure how long this delay is.

& possibly my favourite thing about this phone - it's got great looks, functionality, it feels nice & solid. & it's not a touch screen! Am I the only person in the world who doesn't want greasy fingerprints all over their screen? !

Sony Ericsson has done brilliantly with this phone. Since my first Sony Ericsson, I've always said I'd never go with another brand, & I stick by that to this day.

Good & bad for this. My first Sony phone & first impressions were good, nice compact size & loads of features, all very easy to use. Problem being that my first phone had slide wobble so I returned it for a replacement, unfortunately as it comes across as a well built phone but the cheap feeling on the slide lets it down. I might be unfortunate but Googling around I've seen others also have his issue.

HELP! I am thinking of buying this phone & I was hoping someone could answer a couple of questions for me?

- When the phone is on standby does an envelope appear on the screen & stay on to show you there is a message waiting? I really like this feature but on some of the new phones there don't have anything to tell you of missed messages. I like the envelope to stay on until I've read the message.

- Can you arrange the text inbox so it doesn't display the first line of the message? I like privacy & don't want my texts displayed if I open the inbox. I just want it to display the name.

Hope you can help me. Thanks!

I have had this phone for coming on a couple of months now & I'm completely satisfied, after problems with the previous K850i & the C902. This phone makes up big time & has everything probably too much. For a Walkman phone the camera side is excellent,
Any case it's a phone first hand. & up to now no faults what's so ever, although software issues with backing up numbers on computer with Sony suite & windows clashing.

Of the people I have met who also have this phone, no complaints.

A good all round phone, with some nice toys on the side should you want them.

IHave been using the W995 for a couple of months now having previously had a succession of other Sony Ericsson Phones, indeed my daughter is using my old K750i & says it still works a treat. I actually waited for the W995 to come out past the end of my contract having seen it on Sony Ericsson's website. It took a while before it was released & rumours were that Sony Ericsson were making sure the firmware & functionality were spot on before it came out, I think they cracked it! I certainly haven't had any issues with my phone sourced through Orange (UK) on contract.

Considering the feature packed nature of this phone it really is simple to navigate your way around the menu, although I suppose I am used to Sony Ericsson phones by now. Not having had a slider style phone before I am getting used to opening it up to use quick dial on the keypad, a minor inconvenience. One issue I do have is the charging socket being on the side. I used my previous phone in the car in its matching hands-free cradle. The Sony Ericsson accessories page on the website shows the universal holder for the W995 not an ideal match, as the phone has buttons on the side, from past experience this does not work well. I hope they will bring out a matching cradle soon.

Having looked through other reviews on this site it seems some users have had issues with the quality of photos from the W995. I have to say that I have had some cracking photos from my PHONE with good colours & clarity, for best exposures use the correct setting, I.e. Landscape for Landscape shots etc. Don't expect too much from what is a very small flash! I have had acceptable results for portraits up to 2 metres away, a little closer & the exposures have been excellent. For low light shots without flash prop the phone up on its side & use the self timer function to avoid camera shake. This method should be good for sunsets. Overall I can see a massive improvement from pictures taken on my old K850, must be the extra megapixels.

In common with other reviewers I have to say the music quality is superb & so it should be on a Walkman designated phone. Even the free speakers supplied sound quite good & double up as a handy base for lowlight pictures with the camera. In common with one other reviewer I am not sure the W995 is as effective as my previous phones, at making use of weak signal areas. I have not had any problems with 3G reception though. My only other small gripe might be issues with the supplied software. I couldn't get it to load, some issue with the wrong edition of Adobe Reader on my computer. I downloaded a version from the Sony Ericsson website which works fine.

Overall I am totally impressed with the W995 it is feature packed, seems robustly built, with a great screen & is very easy to use. All I could possibly need which is handy as I am on a 2 year contract.

Had the phone a few weeks now. I find the style very good just wanted a small phone & all the touch screens are too big for me. The phone is good for displaying & showing video & pictures. The downside of the phone in my opinion is the camera in dark places or indoors. Outside in good daylight you can't fault it works, the way it should, good colours good metering. Low light is just a waste.

In my opinion a let down by the LED light. At this price should have been Xenon Flash. The battery life is OK not as good as some would lead you to believe. I like the conversation message feature.

Hi there. I have had the W995 for about 2 weeks. Overall the style of the phone is great, such as the layout (I.e separate media & camera buttons on the side).

Music quality is excellent but you would expect that from a Walkman phone. Though for me the downside is the camera quality, I am not sure if other users have noticed a fault in the picture quality, but in comparison to other phones. The photos comes out bland, lack in colour & when zooming in, you totally lose the image, it is also very appalling when taking shots at night or long distances, could be due to the flash as it is not that bright but great for outdoor pictures & close up shots with good lighting.

Battery life is amazing, as you would expect with a Sony Ericsson. But I have found that I lose reception at times, though I don't with my previous Sony Ericsson phone (even though I have stayed with the same network provider for a number of years).

Hope this helps other users, like I said overall it is a great phone but is very much let down in my opinion by the camera, especially when it is labelled as an 8.1MP.To other users test before you buy, as everyone is different.

Had this phone for about a fortnight after four faulty Nokia 5800's. The battery life on this phone is superb, It last for about 4 to 5 days no problem. The Bluetooth works like a treat with my car head unit, something I could never get the 5800 to do properly. It has all the features a modern day phone should have but last more than half a day from a full charge, which a lot of these new phones won't.

Highly recommended, simple to use phone & well worth the money.

I have had this phone about a month. I bought it because the screen packed up on my w910i. I was disappointed with the 910i as it kept resetting itself even with the updated firmware. I was thinking of buying my first ever Nokia or the Samsung Tocco, but after reading the reviews on here I went with the w995. Very good phone, build quality is good, features on the phone are good. 8 mp camera is good although I don't use my phone to take pictures. Walkman sound quality is excellent, good move putting an 3.5mm audio socket on the top too. Oh, & it hasn't kept resetting itself like the w910i did.

Very happy with my w995, would highly recommend it to anyone.
