My second Sony Ericsson, this phone is fantastic, great to use & hold, love it & so do the kids. The front is very easy to scratch.

I have had this phone for about six months now. I think it is excellent. It does everything I want it to & more besides!
The design is superb, I waited years for Sony to make a good looking clamshell phone. I have had no problems at all.
Yes the camera lens is in a daft place, that's why I marked it down a bit on the design score.
My top tip is to buy a phone sock to keep it in, keeps it looking nice & protects the high gloss front.
A beautiful phone, it was worth the wait.
Previously I had a Samsung phone, the Sony is easier to use when writing a text & the signal strength is miles better.

Beautiful, sleek, 8GB memory, sound quality is amazing, much better than overrated iPod's. That's all I need! I truly love this phone.

I got his phone on the 5th May & connected it into my computer for the PC suit & click phone mode, Now it doesn't work AT ALL! Really annoyed. Although if it was still working, the design it good & the quality of the phone, it is good but for outside the sound it's really bad.

This phone is the best phone that I have ever had! I have had so much phones & this is the complete best. The 8GB really comes in handy & its touch pad MP3 feature at the front is fabulous. The screen is very good as it flips back so far that I can see the screen. I love the Walkman theme that it comes with!
P.S. BEST PHONE IN the WORLD!

Now let's be clear, we are reviewing MOBILE PHONES, & as a phone it is first class, all the features that you'd expect, are easily accessible, & it looks very good. Now the Walkman. Nothing can be as good as an MP3 player. I have a Samsung Z5 which in my opinion cannot be beaten. However, the Walkman facility in this Sony is extremely good, easy to operate, great capacity, & the sound is very good, especially when used with earphones. As others have said if you want to take pictures, get a camera. This camera is okay for the impromptu pictures, & yes, the lens is in a silly place.
Overall if you want an excellent phone, with good music facility, get this. The clamshell get's a bit of getting used to, & as with all Sony's it does freeze, if you are too quick, with your fingers. That's my only gripe, but the perfect mobile phone has yet to be invented.

Great phone overall.
Tends to scratch easily & have your fingerprints showing so needs a clean pretty often but that is a minor.
Battery life is good on mine, rarely needs charging but the camera is poorly placed as my pictures normally consist of half my finger & it could do with a flash as I can't see any night time pictures.
Lots of available options & I am impressed!

When I first bought the w350i I had it 4 a couple of days then later on when I heard there's a better mobile than w350i asked my parents to buy me a new one my mum wasn't okay with it, but my dad said I'll get you a new one, my daddy bought me one the w980i & gave the w350i to my sister first she yelled & said she won't take it but her friend called her & said I got the w350i & so my sister agreed to take it thanks to her friend & I am quite happy with mine now it's a lot better than the old one but there's another one coming out in March 2009 its w995i & it's a slide up but I prefer the w980i.

Don't do it I have had this phone for 5 months & it's the worst phone I have had had 3 other Sony Ericsson's which were great but this is the worst one I have had. I got it because of the music feature I love music & now I can't even get any music to transfer to it 8000 songs I don't think so I have only got 700 on mine the back won't stay on & unless its fully charged all the time it won't work at all for up to 2 to 5 hours I wouldn't advise anyone to get this or any other Sony Ericsson phone as friends of mine have had problems with theirs & not just this model. I have always rated Sony but am very disappointed with this phone.

Had this phone now for around a month & I love it. Not sure why some are complaining about the battery life, mine only gets charged once a week (sometimes twice).
It is easy to use, with superbly clear screens & fantastic music quality. Even works fine with Napster to Go!
Also suggest you get a screen protector.

TOP NOTCH PHONE THIS IS MY FOURTH Sony Ericsson AT FIRST the BATTERY WAS NOT LASTING MORE THAN 4 DAYS & ALL THOSE Sony USERS KNOW THIS IS NOT GOOD BUT I GOT IT SORTED, STEP 1 MENU, STEP 2 SETTINGS, STEP 3 CONNECTIVITY, STEP 4 MOBILE NETWORKS, STEP 5 GSM 3G NETWORKS SELECT GSM ONLY THIS STOPS YOU SEARCHING FOR 3G.
MUSIC PLAYER IS PERFECT, CLAMSHELL IS GOOD AS I NEVER HAD ONE BEFORE, IF YOU ARE GETTING A PHONE SOON GO & GET IT.

This is a great phone with an amazing design. I highly recommend it. Battery life isn't the best but it doesn't matter unless you lose the charger. I say again that the design is good but a little prone for fingerprint marks. Great games. Pretty good camera. The keypad is a little sensitive but you get use to it.
Overall 8.5 out of 10.

I couldn't wait to get my hands on the W980i. I love Walkman phones & especially flip phones. I got my W980i on contract in Sept. Well I have to say the W980i is very disappointing. It is very slow & freezes often. I even updated the software but the slowness has not improved. Whenever you close the phone after a call or reading or sending texts it automatically reverts back to the music controls. So unless you keep the phone lock on you are constantly starting the music player by accident, which is pretty annoying especially when you are at work. The polished finish looks good until you touch it because it constantly looks dirty & scratches far too easily. The camera is terrible! Not only are the pictures not as good as you would expect from a 3.2 mp camera. But also the lens is in such a silly place that it is almost impossible to keep your fingers off it when trying to take a picture. Although it sounds promising this phone just does not live up to expectations.

It's great looking phone well designed & shaped with great features in it. The only thing about the phone is it's only available in one colour. I think the manufacturer should consider producing them in multicolour with silver base which would attract younger demo graphs & a bigger market too just like Dell laptop did. Just a thought!

Overall this is a fantastic little phone. A lot more compact than what I was expecting with a nice classy finish which requires a lot of fingerprint removal!
The menus are of the usual high standard, well laid out & easy to navigate. Texting is especially easy with such a large keypad.
As an MP3 player this rivals my iPod Nano for sound quality & the external MP3 touch functions are great if a little sensitive, but I got used to them after a few days.
Slightly disappointing that you can't do anything other than work the Walkman from the external keys as it would be good to be able to read texts while the phone was closed.
My only real complaint about this phone is the battery life. I have yet to go more than 2 days without charging it. My old phone, a Sony Ericsson W610, would go 5 to 6 days on a single charge.
The Up's. Looks good, 8GB of memory, the external touch screen works really well once you get used to it, great keypad layout. Good pictures from the camera.
The Down's. Terrible battery life, camera lens placed poorly, camera menu interface takes up most of the screen.

What a phone. Upgraded from my 2 year old Sony Ericsson W300i when it started playing up & could not be happier with this new model.
For a start it looks beautiful with its dazzling black shine & brilliantly fashioned Walkman buttons on the front along with a reassuringly designed clamshell mechanism. A simple slide lock on the side of the phone allows you to have the phone in your pocket without fear of tunes suddenly bellowing out every time you move.
Back to the touch buttons on the front. They light up in a wonderful red glow & react to the merest of touches, occasionally maybe being a touch too sensitive, but not causing any real problems. The main display on the front appears from nowhere through the black finish giving the phone that extra touch of class.
The actual phone is a delight to use, well sized & spaced buttons set to the same piano black shine finish & a delightfully crisp main display.
The camera is superb, you can make video calls, the phone is simply great.
The only minute gripe I have found so far is that with the finish being so amazing, it easily shows up your fingerprints which is unavoidable unless you are adept at texting with your feet, but this is simply a nothing problem.
All in all, it's a fantastic phone, nothing more to say.

I love Sony Ericsson phones & have owned nothing but for about 5 to 6 years. I always tend to upgrade to the most interesting & different of their new phones & the W980i is no exception.
It looks awesome, even the box it comes in is stylish. The Walkman is great, the touch buttons are brilliant, although the Walkman does sometimes freeze up (twice in 3 weeks so far) but this is more to do with me flicking about too much. The headphones are top quality & the 8GB is plenty enough.
The camera isn't great but if you want a camera. Buy one.
I am still getting used to the clam shell aspect, I'd like the option to be able to call people when shut. One good thing is that the button on the hands-free answers calls.
All in all, it's a great phone. Just hope it doesn't freeze up again too much.

Best phone I have ever used since 1998, don't be put off by the 3 megapixel camera the quality is fine. If you are used to Sony Ericsson phones its easy & there is nothing this phone doesn't have apart from only maybe a modem so you can use your own homes wireless browsing, but this is a Walkman phone & the 8GB is all I need. I can get 1000 tracks at between 160 & 320 kbs quality onto it leaving 1GB for all the other things. FM transmitter is great for the car & amazingly the battery life is acceptable for such a powerful phone. No faults in my eye at all.

I really like this phone although the touch buttons at the front of the phone, tend to stick from time to time, so can't change track. Camera isn't the best, I had K800i before this & although same megapixel, was better that than this. The front is easily scratched, but overall I am really pleased with it,& would definitely recommend it.

First & last Sony Ericsson. I should have listened to everyone else when they said I am telling you, it won't last. They tend to break easily, & they're not very good as a phone.
It looks quite stylish, but that's where the positives end. The call quality is naff, the paint is already starting to peel, & it freezes often (not surprising at all for a Sony Ericsson).
I am returning this POS. I am going to get a (much more reliable) Samsung or Motorola instead.

I think Sony Ericsson have really created a masterpiece phone this time. You could buy a phone at 350 euro & still could not beat a Sony Ericsson phone. The features are brilliant, design & it is very easy to use. An old person could even get the hang of it. Well done Sony Ericsson. Keep up the brilliant ideas. My guess would be that half the population have a Sony Ericsson phone. The Walkman idea is brilliant considering everyone loves to listen to their music. This latest phone is a must buy 9 out of 10.

Guys I SERIOUSLY recommend that you go & look at this phone in a store before you buy it, I ordered one, basing my opinion on the pictures on the Internet which, I admit, make it look amazing.
In reality, it looks nothing like that face to face, the black is duller, the inside looks budget & flimsy & it's actually quite fat! Twice as thick as the w880i.
The worst thing, however, is the screen, if you are expecting the same type of screen quality as the w880, you will be disappointed, the menu looks far more dated & the graphics are poor, you can't even do photo wallpaper!
Buyers, try first!

This phone is really good.
The phone is actually smaller than it looks in the photo. Go pick one up if you are interested.
The interface is excellent, way better than the woeful Motorola interface on the V9 I had before. Nice touches make it a joy to use.
The phone gets a good signal where the V9 really struggled or had nothing at all.
The battery lasts more than a day which the V9 didn't.
All the extras like the 8Gb & all the toys are a bonus.
The bad, OK, the camera is pretty dreadful & is in a stupid position. It does the job though, & if you want to take good photos buy a camera, having said that it still does way more than the V9 like zooming into photos & retouching photos in the phone.
Conclusion, this is a really good phone. If you like it go & buy it. If not PLEASE don't ever consider getting the V9 (or any other Mot phone).
Enjoy.

It is a wicked phone. Forget the W960i this is the updated version & it is so much cooler, at least it has a Sony feel to it. You can tell that Sony have experimented.
Better than the Nokia N96 I have had one.
Reviewer: Mcbloggy - UK

Phone looks the biz generally, however the flat edges & block corners are a bit rubbish, why don't they change it to make it look more like the W300i?
The features are good, however it lacks infra-red, however am getting a W580i in few weeks, it is impossible to send stuff directly from their old phone to their new one via IR, so it has to be sent to a phone with IR capabilities (I've had to borrow my dad's Nokia for a text alert) then sent on via Bluetooth from there, why not have all Sony Ericsson phones with IR & Bluetooth, like they used to, & have been doing until quite recently? Cut out the middle man as it were.
Overall, it looks good, & has good features in spite of the IR lack, & what with each button being individual unlike the W300i when they were in row of overlapping circular buttons, touch texting has also been made easier, a VERY good phone.

If you want to buy this phone, consider w960i, it's better in features than w980i. This w980i is not a touch screen & no stylus. It's prone to damage because of the close & open feature in order to use this phone. Although the latest in the W series, it has lesser features compared to w960i.

I am tired of Sony Ericsson Walkman phones they breed like rabbits! I have tried this mobile at a tech fair, yeah it's cool but so is my W960i. The difference is the W960i is packed with features unlike the w980i it's got the looks of a Motorola (dated) & is just another Walkman with 8Gb's of memory. It feels as flimsy as a Motorola & let us not forget the shake & break feature, remember the problems with the W910i? Do not be lured into thinking the disc that comes with it will give you more features it won't because the disc won't work properly (they never do! ) Buy it if you think it's pretty but if you expect more than a music & fashion phone forget it!
