When you look at the phone sure you will like it but what if you start using it !?

It is the worst phone I ever used.

- Very bad & poor call manager.
- Full of bugs.

I get angry every time I look at any of Sony Ericsson products because of this phone.

Hi, I have not got this phone, but from some of the reviews, it sounds like a bit of a pain. But, after looking on the site, I found this. Have you guys tried doing this? from what you are all saying it looks like this is why your phone keeps crashing. Sony Software updates.

I got this phone approx 1 year ago & I still love it. Sure it has problems but all phones do & these are just tiny ones.

Design, I really like it, love the big touch screen, colours are great too but now I seem to need a more girly phone as I am over this one, which clearly younger people would love more.

Features, a lot of them, for example, I love playing poker or other games when I am bored. It has Skype & Wayfinder which I find very useful! A ton of other programs but you'll have to find them yourself:), 4GB memory is more than enough, I use no more than 2 GB of it, I just don't need that much but it's nice to have options if needed.

Someone would maybe have a problem with no camera on this phone, but I think cameras are not for phones, so its fine with me, less problems:).

Usability, the most perfect thing about Sony Ericsson is the in ear earplugs, I just can use simple ones anymore, hate them! Now I am stuck on my phones MP3 player because the sound is really great, mega bass & in ear ear plugs really does make music sound perfect!

Writing texts is a bit hard with buttons, but I don't use them for texts, so it not a problem for me, as I use handwriting for SMS.

I really can't find anything wrong with it, it works just perfect! But I would rather go for another design now, as I said, something girlier:).

Hope you can find this review useful!

I really liked this phone when I got it, the music storage is great & the touch screen too.

HOWEVER, now my screen is frozen, I turned it off like I was told but now when I tune it on it is constantly white. I can't do anything to fix it, if anyone knows how I can, please let me know.

I have had this phone for approx 6 months now. It's been a long 6 months & I have given up trying to get the phone to do what I want to do with it & my usage has dropped considerably, no longer do I get auxiliary bills for overuse or extras. The touch sensitive screen isn't & frequently seizes, the predictive text has the vocabulary of a five year old & it's too time consuming to keep adding words, it constantly cuts off when you try to answer an incoming call & then connects you to the Internet function when you try to return the call just missed. The whole range of menu functions are not remotely intuitive, even having had several previous Sony-Ericsson phones. Even photos taken with the excellent camera are hard work to download because of the useless touch screen.

In all it's the worst phone I have suffered since I started using mobiles, back in the 1980's & I have had a LOT of phones. Consequently I try not to send texts anymore & will often wait till I get home to use the landline. In all a good effort by a mobile phone company to stop you using their products, a good idea poorly executed.

DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE! I have had this phone now for 16 months & have hated it after the first! I cannot wait to upgrade & get rid of it. Where do I start explaining my annoyance with this phone? Well it constantly freezes, if you have the phone locked but knock the play button on the side then you music will start paying in your pocket. The software is rubbish & is very slow when you are selecting things from the menu. I have sent the phone back twice but the problems persist.

Sorry to anyone who is getting excited about this phone & wants to get it but believe me you will regret buying this phone.

There is only one good point to offer if I was being generous. The battery! Compared to other mobiles I have had the battery to this phone stands up to the rest.

It has taken me 6 months to get use to the menu system & user interface of this phone, being an ex Nokia phone owner.

I am really disappointed that the phone constantly freezes (even after they installed new software on it) & the only way to rectify this is to take the battery out, I am very over that!

Also, in summer when the weather is warmer, when I am on a phone call my phone disconnects from the call. I can only put this down to the heat from my head interfering with the touch screen. That really is terrible!

Would not buy again.

I have had this handset on contract for almost 16 months & I am quite fond of it. I only have two complaints.

- the 12 button keypad is fiddly for people with thick fingers, but you can always use the virtual pad with stylus.
- It freezes on occasion but this is easily remedied if you switch off & switch on.

The music player has a good sound quality & this is also adjustable using the graphic equaliser function. Sound quality is further enhanced by the Sony headphones. Your music can be organised into various categories to suit different moods.

There are a host of functions that are user friendly. If you do not mind having a mobile without the picture messaging facility, try this one.

Hey. I am planning to buy this phone. I currently use the W810i which is awesome. The only reason I am making the change is no A2DP in the W810. So I am curious as it's not mentioned anywhere does this phone support A2DP I.e. Stereo sound through Bluetooth.

If you complained about one wire of the earphones being smaller than the other try using it around or behind your neck!

I have this phone from 3 months ago. It has wonderful Internet browsing with its Opera browser & its touchscreen. Also it has a very good radio sound in headsets & here the good things stop.

Problems & things that need to be changed, the menus are quite fuzzy as you may very easy call somebody without want it, the recorded sound is awful, the sound into Sony Ericsson HBH PV710 Bluetooth headset is the worst I've ever heard, it has no mini usb (you should use the ugly cable to connect it to a comp), it has no standard jack to use headsets (you need to use another ugly cable, with some very thin & fragile wires to the headsets, & one wire is longer than the other, why? ), the battery life is quite low. But don't tell anybody these disadvantages because I have not sold it yet :).

Been using this phone for 3 months.

Complaints:
- UI not too user friendly
- Phonebook search function not as good as newer Nokia
- Poor 3rd party software support (e.g. PDF reader)
- No Wi-Fi
- Flush keypad
- can't read under direct sunlight
- the earphones are not good

Good points:
- Form factor; nice to hold on hands. I also use Nokia 9300i communicator. The W950 is way easier to carry around.
- Solid.
- Battery lasts 2days under heavy usage (calls, sms, emails), that's 2x24hrs. Good enough. On par with 9300i.
- Handwriting recognition way better than iPAQ / O2 Atom / Dopod. But writing technique not as good as Palm, though.
- Quite stable
- Never freeze

Sony Ericsson 950i the best Smartphone ever. Sony Ericsson 950i is a Smartphone based on Symbian Operating system. I have been using this Smartphone for approximately 7 months now. A few people have posted their disappointment about this Smartphone, however it clicked to my attention that most people who complain about this phone have very little knowledge about the features of the phone, my advice here is take time to read the operating manual & do the right thing.

Only tech buffs can start using this phone straight away without consulting the manual, I find it very strange that someone complaining that the phone took a great deal of time switching on as he switched it off while on flight, this Smartphone has a dedicated flight mode feature, why on earth do you need to turn it off while on flight?

I never experienced the freezing problem with Sony Ericsson 950i, however in occasional cases when I opened too many programmes the phone restarted & notified me it did so as to increase performance, which if I find normal. This is more than just a phone, it can do so many things, it comes with so cool software, yet you can add third party software, I have dictionaries, 3D games, educational materials, great themes, you name it! & most of all I have installed agile messenger which keeps me online 24 seven.

I can't ask for more. Be it business or pleasure Sony Ericsson 950i will deliver.

Here is my two pence worth. I use this phone for business reasons for lots of phone calls, emails & SMS etc. I use the music while travelling. The battery is a total disaster, lucky if I can get a working day out of it.

It boots up slower than my slow PC does. When you land at an airport & switch on your phone I can hear all the other phones clicking in with a network while my phone is still in the boot up mode. It hangs so often it's insane. I have to switch it off & on again at least 1 or 2 times during the day or it will grind to a halt. WEB browsing is also quite slow, I have a 3G connection though so not sure it is the phone or the network. The music works well BUT I need it for business purposes so I would steer clear if you need a business phone.

I would like to remind anyone who says such things like this phone is unstable & randomly shuts itself off. You obviously are another buyer who doesn't research or compare any products before purchase. This is a Smartphone & as such it has to be operated with a little more know how than your simple non OS phone.

Make sure you don't have an inordinate amount of applications open at once & upgrade the firmware. Just because this is a Walkman phone doesn't mean it's for every kid trying to be funky. After all it is based on a business phone the M600i.

OK got this phone 2 weeks ago. Its design is superb, as are all Sony products. BUT if you don't understand its design you will hate it. So, the fact it's a Walkman phone tells you that it's aimed at music. & it has a touch screen which means the keypad can be incorporated into the phone design as stylishly.

Camera Issue:
- the specs & pictures of the product show NO camera. It may disappoint some as this phone is in the pda family, but you can live without it.

Keypad/messaging:
- To people saying typing messages is hard, learn how to write! After two days anyone sensible enough can master the stylus & touch screen to write messages as quick as typing (this is hard to do when driving, but you shouldn't drive & text kiddies! ) :P

Battery:
- Some reviews on the net (with real-life tests) state that with moderate usage you get about 2 days of battery life, which I'd say is about right, but I am not expecting this in 8 months or a year's time.
- I tested the Walkman feature, playing music on the headphones & it gave me around 12 hours straight (the phone being in 'phone mode' & changing songs/using the phone for a few minutes every hour - test repeated 3 times in a week)

Walkman:
- the Walkman feature is why I got this phone. The key lock is bypassed by the main keys for playing/stopping & volume control (if you keep the phone in the pouch I find it helps to avoid accidently pushing the 'play track' button)
- You will DEFINITELY need a computer for organising music. It's tedious & annoying work sorting a thousand songs into playlists on the phone but, you don't need to use the software for transferring music, it just helps fill in the blanks in your song info (like track number, album name etc) & can encode it in lower bit rate to save space.

Overall, if you want a Walkman in a pda, this is it. If you can't live without a camera, get something else or wait for the ultimate - W960i! (I hope this helped someone, wrote this after reading too many other reviews from people not even owning the phone).

Mac owners beware! Apart from its looks, I was keen to get this phone, particularly to use the MP3 & the UMTS with my computer. To my bitter disappointment, it is not compatible with Mac OS! I am gutted. Nowhere in the Sony blurbs or in reviews did I find out before hand. Sony Ericsson didn't even have correct information after I complained. No apology from them either.

Does anyone know where to find Mac compatible phones reviewed? Mac seem to promote only Mac.

Bought mine for $312 brand spanking new & in my opinion it is an ultimate apparatus for the money. Two main things not perfect for me are:

FIRST: Factory headphones sound VERY quiet (but aftermarket ones fixed the problem).

SECOND: I would love to be able to configure the main screen & clear it from the icons I don't need.

Other than that - OUTSTANDING! Recommend!

I have had this phone for over 10 months now. I have only had one problem & that was with the software crashing & it started to freeze, however that was one of the first 100 released in the country by Orange. Which when you consider the software glitches you usually get on a first batch phone I was really impressed.

Orange replaced it for me with no hassles, & the newer software which has had some of the instability issues dealt with is really simple to use. It displays decent 3Mpix photos with no problem at all & although people seem to always complain about its bulk when you hold it up against their phone it usually isn't that much bigger.

The only major thing missing for me is the camera, I haven't really missed it but there are just times when it would have been a little useful. Overall I can't recommend this bit of kit highly enough.

Then I decided to get rid of all Orange branding & Orange specific firmware, I debranded my W950i & changed the firmware to World Generic 1. Since then I have been able to get regular updates from Sony Ericsson Update service for firmware (remind you that no update was available with Orange firmware). 95% of the problems have disappeared since debranding especially losing time & hardly anymore crashes now. This is a super phone just get rid of your Orange, O2 etc brandings.

The W950i is the 4th high end Sony Ericsson phone I've had in a row. They just keep getting better & better. I've had my W950i nearly 12 months now & never had any problems with it. I've got Wisepilot SatNav installed which works great. I use the pop email client daily & the calendar features. The Walkman is great, especially when blue toothed to a hifi system, but the 4GB is nearly full with over 1, 500 tracks installed, so I am waiting eagerly for the W960i with its 8GB memory.

As an all round phone for business & pleasure I don't think the W950i can be beaten. If you're over 30 years old do you ever use a phone camera?

I've had mine for 2 months & really like it. The best bit is usability & not having to use the keypad. It does everything I need from a modern mobile & does it well. The worst bit is that the plastic on the front (around the screen) has started to bubble & crack. My O2 business contract instantly agreed to replace it with a new one, so top marks to them.

I got this as my annual upgrade from a Nokia N70 & it is way better. The N70 I never really trusted, it used to freeze or crash about once a week. The W950 never has, so I've come to trust it.

The w950i also looks great. I like the chocolate Orange effect along with the big screen & small keypad. Speaking of the screen, it's pretty good, but your choice of 'theme' will determine how easy it is to see in bright sunlight. I've chosen a high contrast one & it works well.

My main uses are for phone calls (obviously), as a modem with my laptop & for checking emails (both imap & pop3). It does all of these really well. The touch screen is great for typing, I much prefer it to pressing 7777 to get the letter S.

I also used its Walkman for a while, but the complicated headphone socket / cable just annoyed me. If you decide to replace the headphones the cable ends up a mile long. So I went & got an iPod. Much better.

The other annoying thing with the Walkman is that it can start up when the phone is in your pocket, the play key is not controlled by the keypad lock so it can start up playing via the loudspeaker at any time. Be warned! As a result I've turned the volume for multimedia down to 0 & keep it there.

Software-wise it's fine. The sync function with outlook works great but with one annoying feature: an all day event in Outlook generates an alarm on the phone: not so bad you might think, but the alarm goes off at midnight.

What I think could be better:
- Better plastic.
- A normal headphone socket.
- Key lock includes play button.
- A better web browser.

Overall it's great. I am annoyed by the bubbling / cracking plastic: but glad to be getting another one as a replacement. That pretty much sums up how good it is.

I got this phone about a week ago. I was contemplating this phone & the w850i when I was looking to buy. But I realised, what difference a camera is going to make. If I want to take pictures then I'll use someone else's phone or I'll take a camera! The texting is very good. You can use the keys, write your text, or bring up an on screen, touch, 'QWERTY' keyboard. The phone sometimes reacts slowly, but I only notice the slow speed when I have too many apps open. You should make sure that you close all your apps in the task manager or it will run slowly.

I have come across 1 or 2 small bugs in the phone but a lot less bugs than I would expect from a phone. Especially one that's almost like a PDA.

Only complaint about this phone is the keypad. The keys don't feedback as much as I would like them to but I knew that before I bought the phone. Personally I don't use the keys very much. I text mostly & I just use the touch options.

I hope this helped.

I have the w950i on Three. After I ordered the phone & before I received it, I decided to read some of the reviews out there. Must admit I got a bit worried since many people are saying that the phone has some major problems. Now I have the phone I am really relieved. It's great!

Many people have complained about the low sound volume. I must say that I think it is fine. The sound quality is excellent & loud enough to listen to quite happily on the train. The headphones that come with the phone are pretty good. They fit in my ears really snug & act like earplugs that block out external sounds.

Another common complaint is that the phone is just not that user friendly at all. I totally disagree. I find that overall the phone it pretty well designed & usability is fine. Sure, the phone has been designed for use with the stylus. However, most of the basic functions: navigating menus, making calls, etc can be done using the scroll button on the right hand side of the phone. I think you have to be perhaps left handed to find this phone difficult to use. Text input using the keypad is fine, contrary to a lot of complaints out there. Trust me, it's easy!

Looks wise this has to be the sleekest phone I have ever owned. The pictures on the www just don't do it justice. Size wise, the phone is surprisingly sleek. I thought it would be a brick. I think Sony Ericsson have got it just about right. Also phone is very light, fantastic. I think that's all the main complaints covered. Oh yeah, some people have been complaining about the speed of the phone, crashing & freezing problems. Well so far I haven't had any problems. The phone doesn't take long to boot up, perhaps 20-30 seconds. Also put lots of music on the phone, used about 2Gb already & speed seems to be fine. OK, I'll admit this phone isn't the fastest out there in terms of navigating through menus. But when it does seem to pause momentarily we are talking fractions of a second. It is fine, nothing to complain about.

Then there's the Three branding. I thought I would try & debrand the phone & get all the original menus & stuff. Now I have the phone I can't be bothered. It's fine. The Three branding is alright, nothing really annoying. Track ID is still there. That was the most important thing for me. So overall I give this phone very high-resolution.

Major problems with synchronisation software & poor service from Sony Ericsson.

I have had my phone from the moment it was available from Vodafone in October 2006. I have been using it as full time all in one devise since then & as a phone & all rounder it is great.

If people have trouble using the phone itself, then they must be daft. I see some have said they can't text or keyboard with it, because the key pad is not user friendly - they are missing the point, doh. It is a touch screen devise with graffiti recognition & you hardly ever need the keypad. If you synch up all your contacts with your PC, you can simply dial up or text using the screen.

The biggest issue is the supporting sync software. It does not work or even install on Vista or XP64bit - my new PC is Vista, & I have another with XP64.

I have spoken to Sony Ericsson several times about it & they don't seem to care or have a solution in the pipeline. They clearly view this product as a stand alone telephone devise & not a smart phone at all. I must say I am confused as to how useful a 'smart' phone is that won't synchronise?

Given that Vista, the EPOC phone operating system & the phone itself have now all been around for more than 8 months & the Vista platform available for Beta testing form more than 18 months, I would have expected much better from Sony - a supposed technology company!

Come on Sony get your act together & sort this out.

The MP3 player is easy to use & although sound could be louder a more powerful set of headphones easily sorts this out. Once you get used to the interface & using the touchscreen it is a breeze to use & I honestly have no problem using the keypad. Texting is simple on this phone & you have a lot of choice for input, keypad, handwriting recognition or onscreen keyboard (which is a little small for optimal use but still can be used). Any way after 4 months I have no true complaints to make about this phone I think it's good to use, nice to look at & is an excellent phone.

I am from the Nokia stable, & so there might be some points I make that apply to all Sony Ericsson phones.

Looks great, & definitely attracts attention (though I am not sure I'd call it 'purple').

The MP3 player part is designed excellently software-wise, & you can use your own headphones - which is great.

I have to say, though, that there are aspects of this phone that make me regret buying it.

1) The keypad looks funky but is really poor. On my phone it is hard to press the right keys, which combined with point 2 makes texting a nightmare. I suspect it's that the framework of the fascia prevents the keys from 'pressing' properly.

2) The predictive text drives me nuts. It tries too hard & the guesses it comes up with are often bizarre. When you want to type 'on' & it comes 5th in the list of options behind 'nowadays', you know something is wrong. Turn it off & you have to contend with getting even more presses right on the keypad

3) The MP3 player volume is too low.

Buy this phone if you want to look 'cool' & make your friends jealous. Just don't let them use it to text someone.

If you want an effective mobile telephone with an MP3 player, buy an old Nokia 6210 & an iPod. They both do what they're meant to much better than the W950i, & they'll last about 5 times longer between charges.

I just want to make one or two points clear though:

For those of you buying this model, & then complaining that it has no camera. READ the DESCRIPTIONS BEFORE YOU BUY! In no article or picture I have seen does it state that a camera is part of the specification for this product. How about we leave that little complaint out of future reviews eh? :)

Secondly, it is pretty apparent that users with the W950i who use the Orange, Vodafone & Three / 3 are experiencing severe difficulty with the branded software. (O2 do not supply branded software) Try flashing the device & removing the branding. For more info you can contact Sony Ericsson or simply search the Internet :)

Any further questions run a search for some of the above & see if my name comes up ;)

I have had this phone for a month now as a free upgrade from 3. It took me sometime to get used to it (was more used to Nokia).

The phone feels solid & compact. Looks stylish & well made. Keypad is small & buttons are too close, hence texting, emailing & chatting take a while to get use to, but not that bad.

I have no problem connecting to 3G network (may be because its 3?), going online & navigating through webpages is a breeze! (£5 to surf as much as you want!). I have set up to get my emails delivered directly to my phone. No hassle.

No problem writing using stylus (make sure you get an overlay screen protector to avoid scratching your screen). I can write 'T' & 'K' with no problem at all.

For faster music transfer, put the phone to 'Fast file transfer' & you get full USB 2.0 speed! I have filled up 3 GB in no time!

The negatives:
- Battery runs out very quick for a heavy user
- Sound/music could be louder
- Can't put loudspeaker until call is connected (new firmware fixes this)

You need to use the stylus for everything, it's very difficult to make calls when on the move, i.e. in the car. Whereas with Nokia it's very simple. The keypad is appalling, the keys are very close together & I have made so many dialing errors.

All in all, I hated this phone, luckily I have a 14 return policy on it so will be exchanging it today. If you want a PDA, then it's great, but if it's a phone you want then in my opinion there are many better options out there.

I so desperately wanted one of these phones I had to change my service provider. My initial joy has faded fast. There are currently no bespoke replacement covers for the handset. The supplied one fell to bits in days & the one recommended by Sony Ericsson isn't good as you can't use it with the earphones plugged in! D'oh!

The handset freezes regularly & accessing 3G is hit & miss. I often have to turn the phone off then on to get it to work. The reboot time is dreadful. I suggest you do it when you're not going to use the phone for a while - soooooooo slow. Maybe it's just my contract with Orange but the cost of 3G access is disgraceful.

The stylus is dreadful - unless you are ultra gentle it's easy to bend or snap - the cost of replacements is extortionate.

The music player, in theory, is great. The reality is different. The transfer, from PC, takes ages. Worst of all is the feeble volume. You have to have it on maximum volume, in the case of my journey to work, & you can still clearly hear the sound of trains.

It's my first Sony Ericsson phone - & probably my last. I may even sell it on eBay & get one that works better. Sony Ericsson - sort it out!

For example, at first I thought the only way to get to the contacts was through the Main menu. But then I found that if you press any key for 3 sec the contacts appear & you can select & call.

I have also found a way of changing the shortcuts on the screen to whatever you need most frequently. The shortcuts that I currently have at the bottom of the screen are : CONTACTS / CALENDER / CALL LOG / MESSEGING / MAIN MENU. Very convenient for me.

1 major problem seems to be when viewing photos, getting to the next picture can get tiring. Current solution is starting a slide show.

Messaging can take a while getting used to. I am still getting used to it.

The feature that I miss the most is the 4 way scroll button, a habit that I got into with my previous phone Nokia 3230.

From a usability stand point, I would rate the Nokia 3230 very highly, but I am optimistic about getting used to this phone as well. Maybe time will tell.

Is the ALARM function bothering anyone else, Rings at odd times. Solution is to Back-up the data & go for a MASTER RESET.

The volume could have been more. NO wish there was solution for this. I love my music LOUD!

This is a phone for music lovers alone!

Good points:
- Good memory
- Looks
- No Camera; Camera phones are bad!

Bad points:
- Texting is an absolute nightmare. Keypad is far too small.
- Hand writing feature is a bit pointless. Difficult to write T's on it.

Altogether Good Phone, But a Bit Too Expensive. Personally I Think Cheaper Sony Ericsson's Are Better. Maybe the w550i (Cheap & Cheerful).

I have several phones including the K750i & the K800i though this is the first real Walkman phone that I have owned, Its not the most beautiful phone that I have ever seen but looks isn't everything, Feature wise it has plenty but can be very tricky to use, its not really designed for anyone that likes to text a lot as it takes some getting use too, the predictive text can be a real pain in the butt! & as for the joggle wheel if you are like me when I press the wheel I sometimes catch the volume button on the other side which brings up the volume control panel! Key pad is not that easy to use either but with time I am sure I will get use to it, As for all those folk that bought this phone & complain about it not having a camera. Can you not read what it says on the box, yes it would be nice if it had a camera but it don't.

One of the problems that I really find with this phone & maybe there is a way round it that I haven't found yet, if someone beams a photo etc to the phone it goes into the text message which can be a bit of a pain when you want to save them into the picture folder or music file you have to go through several painstaking screens, the hand writing recognition is none useable! Well if it is I can't use it, try doing the letters K or T if you manage let me know how you did it. One other gripe that I have about this phone is that when it's powered down it would be nice if you still see the time like on the K800i etc. Now for the good points its feels nice in the hand even though its slightly wide it fits the hand well, screen is excellent, side buttons work well though could be positioned better, in all if you don't text a great deal & not too worried about needing a camera & like to have music when you travel well then I would say go for this phone.

I got this because of the great reviews but, in all honesty, it has been an utter disaster for me.

Battery Time: Laughable. It is permanently on charge. I changed the battery twice already & have only had it 3 months.

Headset: Cuts out during conversations, at times it's very hard to hear what is being said by the other party even with the volume cranked all the way up.

Usability: You have to drill down from the menu to get to the Contacts list. It's not the best designed setup. I know it's supposed to be a Walkman but why have they not left everything you need to make phone calls ON the FIRST MENU SCREEN!

Until I got this phone, because of my job, I was spending around £300 on calls. That's now been reduced to £60. I am actually using my home phone or my Blackberry because this is so bad. I literally HATE using it.

If you want a nice little casual phone with average sound for playing music then go ahead & get this. Otherwise steer clear.

I went & bought a K800i today & am hoping that will be better. Wish me luck! :D

I've had my W950i for about 2 months now & I am glad that I bought it. Sure, it has no camera, has very small keys & the software management is currently incompatible with Vista (but not I should add the Disk2Phone application which works perfectly under Vista allowing me to upload my music) but it is quite simply the most elegant phone on the market. Add to that the fact that it has 4GB of memory for either music (perfect for long rail/tube journeys!), movies or applications like Sat Nav & you're onto a winner.

Nice design. More modern & compact compared to 900i useless touchscreen. Utterly useless. Writing an sms with the touchscreen pen will take you all day (try writing the letter t. LOL). & I still don't understand why mobiles try to be I-pods. Its just not gonna be beaten, buy an ipod for songs that's what it does. & the battery life is poor oh & did I mention no camera. Still if you've got money to burn & very small fingers then you will be alright.

Although this phone has a huge 4GB of memory (which I found very useful for storing music on) there battery life isn't amazing, although there aren't many phones that have phenomenal battery life (the k750i does).

I also had a problem with the interface of the phone & using it. Often the things I most frequently wanted to access would require me getting out the pen & tapping around for a while before I got to it. There are also some buttons on the touch screen that are far too small to touch with the finger & also require the pen coming out.

At first I thought I could do without a camera but I was wrong. With the lack of a camera you find yourself feeling that the phone can't really do much & it is at a bit of a dead end.

Also the usability of the pre hailed music player has been over-rated. It is not amazingly easy to use & takes a while to get used to it.

Overall I would say that this phone is definitely. If you want a normal leisure phone & ease of use phone this is not the one for you.

First of all, how on earth can people submit a review & rate a phone that they clearly don't own yet !? !? It's not very sensible & doesn't give people a proper overview of the phone, some people !

Back to the phone, the W950i is very good however a few things that users should be aware of -

The phone can be a bit slow at times but it will get there. The quality of the music through the external speaker is not great but very good through the ear phones.

As has been mentioned, no camera & a major point. For those of you that like to keep up-to-date with technology. The software for this phone will not run on Windows Vista OS. So if you updated your PC like I did & have this phone you are now unable to put music on your phone.

Apart from that, an all round good music player & phone.

DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE!

Honestly this phone is a dog! Having used previous Sony Ericsson phones I expected this one to be good. The idea is good & yeah it could be used similarly to a pda having two in one BUT there are serious flaws with the software used! This phone is slow & the usability is awful, typing a message takes an age! If you're like me I tend to type with a combination of two fingers & what I was having to do was press the buttons with my left hand & use my right thumb to toggle the scroll wheel to select the word! I am not saying it's not do-able but seriously awkward. The key pad is rubbish its requires a good hard push before it even recognises you've pressed it! Not good when your a regular fast typer! The music player functions are to a good standard but I found the software frustrating to use & not the most intuitive.

Initially I was attracted to the pda style of the phone as I use one myself but I was very disappointed with the functions.

Functions such as calendar, organiser, email client are all more often than not very basic. The phone is nice & slim but the width of it is similar to a PDA but it does no where near anything sufficient. I understood at the time of buying this phone that it had no camera, but I thought if its good to use it wouldn't be too much of a problem. However anyone thinking of getting this phone I would tell you I can think of many phones that can do what this phone does but miles better & with a camera & in better size dimensions!

So the question is, did Sony Ericsson need to make such a rubbish phone, cos it doesn't fit into the current line up does it what with the fab w850i & p990i.

Brilliant phone spoilt by rubbish software (Orange). Got one on 23rd January. 2 days later it would not boot. Returned it to Orange on 2nd February. Got it exchanged for a new one. 2 days later exactly the same thing happened. Rang Sony Ericsson but they blamed the Orange software & didn't seem to want to help. Returned it to Orange on Monday 5th January. Had it exchanged for another new one. Got it home & 3 hours later the EXACT SAME FAULT HAPPENED. That was phone number 3. I am taking it back & going back to Nokia. Pity, because for the short time it actually worked it was a joy to use. But I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole now. WARNING. DO NOT GO NEAR THIS PHONE. I give design low marks because the software design does not allow the phone to be used. If the usability had a zero rating. That is what I would give it as it cannot be used. The features of the phone are brilliant, if only. Ah well.

I bought this phone 4 weeks ago & I must say I am impressed with the features that the phone provides.

I knew CLEARLY that the phone does not have a camera & so there is no question of crying about something which you already knew. In fact, I think camera phones are rubbish because the camera adds to the weight, the size & the price of the phone. So you get a lousy phone & a lousy camera bundled together. I have a Panasonic Lumix FZ-20 camera which I take around whenever I am out visiting places & it sure as hell beats the living rubbish out of any phone camera out there.

I am though a little bugged about one thing. You cannot seem to change the main screen too much. I've tried speaking to Sony Ericsson & Vodafone & none of them know how to do it. So I am basically stuck with a non-configurable menu. I also would ideally like to remove all the shortcut icons from the main screen but I can't seem to find a way of doing that either. If anyone on this thread knows how to do it, PLEASE tell me. My question is - why pay £100 more to get a camera on the phone rather than spending £150 to buy a very good digital camera that offers a million more features than a phone camera ever can. (Being a photography enthusiast, I know that it is very difficult to fit any REAL camera into a phone without making it as large as a digital camera itself).

The Walkman is superb. The battery life is very good too. It supposedly has amongst the high-resolution. It's probably the lightest, slimmest & most stylish touchscreen phone on them market. I also like the slim & uncluttered look of the phone. Simple & stylish. The handwriting recognition is AMAZING & I use it for texting all the time. I can't seem to write '4' & 'X' properly though. Will have to read the user manual & see how I need to draw these two things.

I think this is a great phone for everyone who wants a fully functional, simple yet stylish phone with a mind-boggling capacity & a very slick looking touchscreen. DO NOT WORRY ABOUT A CAMERA. If you feel the utter need for a camera, go buy one separately from Argos or Jessop's.

*I have to laugh at some comments on here, please read for anyone thinking about this phone *

Comments such as 'it has no camera & I am so disappointed' are pathetic! - Of course it has no camera, it says that ON the BOX. I bought this phone knowing full well it wouldn't have a camera & guess what, I wasn't gutted to find it didn't! Maybe some people should do some research before buying this phone.

1. The Walkman is brilliant, sound excellent & I've seen some fantastic reviews on this feature for this phone lately. Transferring files is fast & easy, the Walkman is the most user friendly part.

2. Texting is not the easiest of features, but, after say 2 days you WILL get used to it more & more, then it becomes second nature & you will realize that this phone is something special.

3. Its one of the BEST LOOKING PHONES on the market. Look at all the other plasticy bulky rubbish out there, phones these days are so bad, Apple have come up with something decent. I am from a family of product designers & I am telling you aesthetically this phone is good, simple & cool. The only gripe is the location of jog wheel, making holding the phone in just one hand nearly impossible. But then again, it is just about a PDA.

Finally, a great phone, doesn't feel like it will break at all, god knows what some people are on about here when they say the button feels like it will fall off or the screen may gather dust, how about look after it like you would an iPod & it will be fine. Can't see any faults with mine, crashed twice but had it a while now, didn't bother me.

I recommend this phone to anyone who wants everything all in one, & to who can't be bothered to wait for the iPhone. Obviously ONLY if you're not too bothered about no camera, I mean come on when was the last time you took a life changing shot on your phone.

This phone has gone down so well in the latest gadget mags, buy it, give it time.

I've had this phone now for about a month. Must say at first it took me a while to get used to it but then again it's not just a standard phone is it! , it's more than that, think of it as a mimi laptop. Just wondering if those who gave it bad reviews are any good at using computers I don't think they are, sorry guyz! I've no problems with my phone, buttons are nice & firm, it doesn't freeze up I should know because I am on it 24/7 (have broken leg so not at work at the moment). Download a few software & it becomes a satnav, Microsoft word/excel.

Why do you need a camera on a phone? ! It's a silly gadget for teenagers just like those built in speakers, useless & good for annoying people on the bus/trains! Anyway do people actually develop those pics from their phone I don't think so! If you do, get your self a digital camera that's what they were designed for!

Just one thing though does anyone know how it can hold 4000 tracks? . I mean you can but it means reducing to 32 kbps which results in poor sound quality. But at 128kbps the phone can hold about 1000 tracks with decent should quality.

THIS FOR ME IS A BIG MINUS & FALSE ADVERTISING AS IT doesn't HOLD 4000 TRACKS OF GOOD SOUND QUALITY!

The w950i is a sleek phone, it is very light, & is extraordinary thin considering the amount of features it boasts. The best feature by far would have to be the Walkman. The sound quality is exquisite coupled with the Sony Ericsson speakers which came with it. The 4GB capacity is exactly what I was waiting for in phones.

Although it has all these new features I have to say it is poor for many reasons. As a portable media device it is excellent, but as a phone it is poor. The maximum ring volume is very quiet, if the phone is in another room, I struggle to hear it. It also fails to ring for long enough (I don't know if that is a network problem or not), it only rings for about 12-15 seconds which in my opinion is not long enough.

Another big problem with the phone is the sound recorder. In my business it is useful to have this to take down customer details on the spot. Every phone I have had which has a sound recorder has been able to record calls. The Sony Ericsson w950i does not allow you to record calls. Instead it shows an error message saying 'recording failed'.

Other reviews I have read state problems with the phone crashing, it has happened a few times to me. I think Sony Ericsson need to release a software upgrade for these errors.

All in all, I raise my hat for its 4GB built in Walkman, which is a feature I hope to see becoming standard in all mobile phones. Unfortunately, the Walkman hides the truth:

It is a poorly made 'communication device'. If you're looking for a 'phone' or you use it for business, then avoid it. If you are looking for a slick multimedia device then consider. Though it doesn't have a camera on it.

If you're not sure, then just wait. A better version should come out in the future. Whether it's Sony Ericsson or not.

Pre-purchase
I bought this phone as soon as it was available as I was looking for an awesome phone that had everything (except a camera). I don't use a phone camera much & I was sold on the 4GB HDD, sleek design, 3G (384kbps data transfer), web browser, email, & music functionality. The only thing that I thought was a negative before buying it (in addition to no camera) was no Wi-Fi. Again, Wi-Fi wasn't critical for me so I went ahead & bought the phone.

Actual Use
After buying the phone & using it I was initially quite pleased but after serious use quickly became disappointed. Here are the reasons why:

1) The return button on the side of the phone (left thumb side) was positioned below the jog dial wheel & it was awkward & uncomfortable moving your left thumb down all the time to press return. It would have been much more user friendly having the return key above the jog dial wheel. This issue may vary for different people based on hand size. I think I probably have slightly smaller than average hands for a grown man so I would expect that most adult males would find this a problem.

2) The cancel key on the keypad only cancels in certain applications, it is not universal across all phone applications/screens. You intuitively go to press the C key to go back to the home screen & nothing happens. You had to always use the return button on the left side of the phone with your left thumb (see issue 1 above).

3) Too dependent on the stylus. This perhaps was the most annoying thing from a usability perspective. Unlike most phones (particularly Nokia) there were no buttons/keys below the screen that allowed you to easily select the option/action displayed in the left & right bottom of the screen. You had to use the stylus & click on the screen to select the option/action. This drove me mad. I have always liked being able to use my left thumb to click on the left or right key below the screen to select the menu action.

4) Locating contacts. The Symbian OS didn't allow me to have the contacts menu button on the main menu (home page). I had to scroll to page 2 of the menu to click the contacts menu item in order to find someone in my address book & make a call. I would have liked a contacts button on the keypad or menu option always available to be able to find a contact any time without having to go back to the menu & then scroll to page 2. This drove me mad. I checked the settings & couldn't find anywhere the ability to change the menu structure. Hopefully I didn't miss something & this is a legitimate issue. I found it very strange as it would be such a basic requirement for any phone, particularly a smart? phone.

5) Symbian OS - navigating to options (right mouse click). I found that in the version of Symbian in the W950i that it was often tedious & many clicks using the stylus to find a menu option/action. For example, deleting an SMS message or deleting a contact. The delete action was often a few stylus clicks as opposed to one or two clicks from the current screen you were on. It always had to be done using the stylus. I hope this is something the Symbian have improved in their newer versions. I could have been affected in this area also due to my familiarity of Windows & using a PocketPC (the HP RW6828). Still, I didn't think that the W950i was highly intuitive. The need to use the stylus all the time drove me crazy.

6) Stability - Crashing. After using the W950i for a couple of days I had a problem where after turning the phone off & back on again it went in to a continuous boot cycle & never actually booted up. When turning on the phone the phone would briefly vibrate then start the boot cycle. When the phone vibrated after pressing the power button this was the indicator that it was going to go in to a continuous boot cycle. The only way to stop it was to pull the battery out. Unfortunately back. Now I am looking at the Nokia N95 & am trying to find out a firm release date.

The problem with the endless boot cycle I believe was caused due to a fault that is triggered when using the synchronisation functionality (USB). It was only after I had synced my phone with my PC that the problem occurred.

Overall, I thought the size of the phone, sleek design, 4GB HDD, music quality, & large TFT display was really good. Usability though was poor & certainly enough for me to not recommend this phone to anyone. In addition the system crashing & stability issues would make me not recommend it also.

I am adding this review as I feel there are some important points that people are leaving out (Ps please excuse the typos, I am rushing this at work ;).

Design:

It looks the business when you take it out of the box. It's slimmer & FAR lighter than my K800i.

Problems:

-the back button on the side is wobbly. It actually feels like it may just come off in your hands.
-the touch screen appears flimsy, as if there's an accident waiting to happen. Also the top/ bottom of the screen aren't attached to the frame as such, there's a little gap that I am guessing dust would get into?
-the touch screen is temperamental. It sometimes takes 3 touches before it responds.
- When I turned the phone on it was very slow. This became a pattern & it often took up to 2 minutes to start up.

Usability:

The most pressing issue is trying to use this phone for its intended purpose on the 3 network. This is a Walkman ® phone. My music tracks are almost all downloaded from 3. Their music files are '3GP' (& apparently have consumable access keys). Neither of these things have been an issue before. When trying to save the tracks (3 allows you to download tracks 3 more times after purchase), all seemed fine. Then... I tried to play the tracks. At first they worked fine. But after about 4 plays they suddenly stop working. The tracks say 'error', 'sound not supported' & then get stop altogether. Heartbroken I tried again... & again (pointlessly using up all my free re-downloads!). Then, I though I'd cracked it. The tracks started working... I got to work before the Walkman decided to start skipping past the downloads (again). Trying to be clever I thought better of it & decided to email the tracks to myself (my 3mail account). This was a bust as the downloads just kept re-starting once they got to 66% complete= (I know, why didn't I just use the software- USB provided? Because I don't have a decent PC at home. My work PC is the only decent one I have access to & obviously I am not gonna be downloading software onto that! This essentially means that the Walkman ® can't be used as a Walkman!? ! At least not on 3 anyway.

Another small annoyance was an irritating beeping every 10 minutes without fail when listening to the Walkman. Although, the earphones/ sound quality were otherwise excellent.

Other usability issues:

-wouldn't let me open messages saying they were incomplete (they WEREN'T).
-the phone initially wouldn't let me Bluetooth/ download videos? Had to turn the phone off/on to get it to work.
-the phone turned itself off/on several times as I was trying to change the settings (in the control panel).

Features:

On first glance the phone is rather lacking in features. The sub-menus look half empty. In all actuality the phone is less impressive than the K800i. Speaking of which, I was eager to get back to using my old phone after only ONE day of using the W950i. The most noticeable absences were:

-the RSS reader (maybe just me?)
-the screensaver having no clock
-the screensaver not indicating whether you have any messages
-No dedicated OK button
-No save picture option (as with WAP)
-the auto key lock/ inactivity lock kicks in FAR too early (a few seconds in both cases). In practice, this means the keys will lock when you are typing/ reading messages etc.

I'll try & balance the negative with some positives. The phone does (mostly) what it says on the tin. It's sleek & the techies out there would love it. It's far more similar to a palm top than any mobile I've ever seen. Think of it as a cross between an iPod & Blackberry. PS the onscreen QWERTY pad was a dream to use (& yes, that was all I could think of, but it's better than nothing).

Had this phone now for 2 months, yes it freezes occasionally (once a fortnight), but quick unclip of back & all fixed. Primarily purchased to double up as an MP3 player, & have to say that I have been thoroughly impressed with the sound quality, headphones & even the software - Sony has used crippling software on previous Walkman devices that thankfully has been vastly improved.

No camera but if you want a camera buy one of the myriad other phones on the market. If you are happy to use stylus/ finger to text you'll find that texting is as simple as before. Overall very happy with this phone, best MP3 phone combo on the market, & thoroughly recommend it to anyone who wants to avoid the mobile & Ipod cramped pockets.

I was really really looking forward to this phone, & it arrived just in time for Christmas.

I have been using it for 4 days now & am sorry to say, it's RUBBISH! No Camera for a start. Looking beyond the camera issue, it keeps crashing, & the only solution is to take the battery out! On top of that the volume buttons on the right have broken. I rang Orange & Sony Ericsson who both advised a master reset. I tried this & it took 20 mins to reboot.

There's no software out for it at the moment, so all you can do is use it for music. Beyond that, the little things are missing, like a screensaver that tells the time (W800i) & programmable shortcut buttons for switching line1/line2.

You're better off buying a Nano & a smaller phone, why carry a brick!

Design:

Keypad on phone is actually horrendous, but I have only had the phone for 12 hours, & my first impression is pretty shocked, txting on the phone is quite difficult & nearly always going back to make corrections, & yes I can text properly. But on the whole, very nice design, the scroll key at the side of the phone is pretty smart as well as an ending point on the design, very nice, flat & bold, simplicity :) (Just like to add - I will probably get used to the texting, it's just a different texture off buttons LOL).

Features:

Straight to the point - no camera? I don't understand why? I know that the 4GB memory makes up for the camera, but with a camera it would be the best phone ever, actually, just need to add a qwerty keyboard & that's it, but yeah the features on the phone are pretty cool, MP3 player, email, Bluetooth, pretty standard, but that's what makes the phone awesomeish.

Usability:

75% you're wondering why? yes well as I said had the phone 12 hours, txting has been a hassle, & all rounder getting used to it, but yeah, there's a few things, the buttons on the phone are terrible! Too close to each other, but that's why I have made % lower than the person reading this probably expected, but yeah, this review hasn't been really helpful LOL.

Conclusion:

Nice & simple - go to a phone shop & check it out first! It's different from a lot of phones, also if you take silly pics & videos or send lots of pics via MMS, then this phone definitely Ericsson! Though k800i still kills it!

The phone has no camera, this is a good thing because no phone has a camera as good as the best digital ones. Also why pay £100 for a rubbish camera without a decent flash? I've been using a Palm Treo for about 2 years & this phone exceeds its performance in almost every respect. The design is smart & the Walkman sound quality is unrivalled by even the mighty iPod. Some have said they have problems with the browser & other aspects of the operating system. They must read the user manual thoroughly because it's not as intuitive as a Treo in this respect. E.g. Scheduling email downloads is in more than 4 levels of menu. The point is, it is there; you've just got to find it. The 3G gives really fast download speeds but its there for downloads not video chat! Downside is 3G eats the battery so I turn it off when I don't need it. I believe this phone has been targeted at serious Smartphone users & perhaps Sony Ericsson should have made a W850i with large built in memory for the youth/fun market. Because judging by some of the comments made its plain some of you have chosen the wrong phone. On the whole this phone has made me come back to Ericsson after staying away from the fashion wear they've bought out since becoming Sony Ericsson. It's good to see them back!

Nice phone but why would you bother making it 3G when it doesn't even have a camera on it? how are you supposed to add pictures to your contacts without using someone else's camera phone & then Bluetoothing the picture to yours? otherwise this is a very very nice phone with a lovely memory size in it, again just a shame they couldn't include a camera.

I must say that this phone is awesome I am looking to get one for Christmas. The design of the phone is lovely I am only giving it 95% as I wish there were more colour options & the fact I still think it could do with the odd bit here & there but that doesn't bother me at all. The fact that the phone is not overly huge & heavy is what I like in a phone, nice lite weight & a decent size, although this phone is larger than the average candy bar phone it is built to fit easily into your hand so you can operate the Jog Wheel & use the stylus with ease.

This is one of the few phones available with UIQ 3.0 which is another step forward in Symbain technology, combining it with a stunning 2.6' touch screen was a great ergonomics. I have heard that the MP3 player is one of the easiest to use thanks to its album art. Along with it being a rival to the top end MP3 players available other things I have heard say if you want a Video iPod then buy this phone instead as its so much better, I personally think a Video iPod would be better as it is dedicated to high-resolution more than enough video encoding options & using something like ImToo 3GP Video Converter you can easily get decent sized files, good quality & sound! As for this camera issue, oh this phone is bad because there is no camera! Waste of money etc etc. Sony Ericsson are not going to give a rubbish what the hell some puny teenager thinks or anyone for that matter all they can say is buy another phone like the P990i same price I believe with camera & touch screen less memory but you have to make sacrifices people! the Usability of this phone same people have rated down as a result of there being no 'dedicated' buttons to answer calls, but then I ask, is that not why they place a 2.6' glorious touch screen there for? Obviously not for some people if you want buttons then buy a different phone (P990i) or stop being sad! I think that a touch screen combined with a Jog Wheel is a great way to navigate through a phones features, text messaging will be much easier one you get used to the stylus, instead of pressing buttons you can quickly write out your message which surely can beat texting, right?

Anyway this phone is awesome if you want a phone with a camera the answer is simple. BUY A DAMN DIFFERENT PHONE & STOP WHINING! The fact that this has been compare to iPod Videos for its quality, Then the Nokia N91 as it has 4GB, which is a hard drive so power consumption is higher, & search time is longer when its filled. Where the N91 has a camera the W950i doesn't but the W950i is much nicer, the N91 is fatter & has Wi-Fi but access to Wi-Fi in the UK at the moment is not easy as there are hardly any free access points unless you use the one at home, school or work which would be pointless as you would have a computer pretty close, unless you lazy & can't be bothered to walk to the PC then that's the only time I can think of ;).

Well that's my long winded review spent a few minutes doing this instead of coursework. Eh.

The handwriting recognition so clear & easy to use.

It gets 9.5 all day from me.

I bought this when it first came out & have been very happy with it. I had what I thought were problems getting mp3s to it & even called Sony Ericsson's tech support. They gave me the run around saying the mp3s were incompatible. Then I decided to RTFM & I found that you have to tell the phone to Update Music. This is where it searches its memory & looks for new music. This must be done after downloading any type of audio file to the phone. If you don't the phone doesn't recognize them. I wished Sony Ericsson tech support told me this.

I am also using HBH-DS970 stereo Bluetooth headset & am having no problems.

My only complaint is the low ringer; it's barely audible.

Need to get the push email setup with O2 (seems like the people in the shop did not know it had this feature! ) as well as 3G from O2.

Generally very impressed, just wish I could access my contact list via the jog dial or other key & not go through the menus to get there. Oh well!

At last a phone without a camera. I barely use mine & the fact that I have a Canon A620 means I don't want to use it.

Flash memory is going to outperform the hard drive from the N91 as it will not use nearly as much battery life.

Fortunately this phone was mentioned whilst I was Googling for N91 reviews & I'm pretty confident I will be ordering mine.

Little worries that it doesn't seem to be supporting WMA, porting about 90% of my music to mp3/aac is not ideal as it means doubling the space my music takes up on my computer.

The overall appearance & colour of this phone really drew my attention to it initially, but the integrated features are outstanding.
