Very nice phone.

If you want a simple, easy to use, nice features & durable phone, this is definitely the right one. I have used it for 2 & a half year's & it still functions well. Dropped it on a concrete floor many many times, even in the snow, almost run over with my car but the phone still survives.

The only problem is no provider here in the states supports it, so I ended up using the phone for only texting & phone calls. No Internet.

It also started acting up, turn it off but you have to go through hell to turn it back on. After many trials, it finally turns on.

All in all, best phone I have ever had.

This phone is really the best phone I have had in years. I now had it for over three years, still working perfectly.

The GOOD. Light, simple, easy to use, fast, compact & VERY FAST CHARGING, the perfect phone!

The BAD. Memory stick only 1GB but the phone memory is contradicting this statement, back complicated to open, difficult to remove SIM card & camera only 2.0 megapixel :(.

HIGHLY RECOMENDED.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this phone. I've had it for almost 3 years & I am sad to let it go. If I could buy it again but brand new I would as it has never let me down. It has survived numerous drops & had hair serum leaked inside of it (I thought it would have been a goner) but it still works almost perfectly! & that was almost a year ago that happened. Such a durable phone.

The only problem I have had with it is the plastic over the directional buttons has cracked but I am a manic texter & when I first got it I used to play games nonstop so over the 3 years I am not surprised that its suffered some damage but it doesn't affect the function of the buttons what so ever.

Is a fantastic music phone with loads of functions & very good volume. The camera isn't the best but not bad for a 2 megapixel. It's also has functions like video, burst & frames which just add to your pictures which you can then edit once you have taken them.

The design of it I love. I got the white one & it has gold & silver accents which look amazing!

It has lots of memory thanks to its memory card so you can store all of your favourite songs, which are so easy to put on the phone with the USB.

Loads to keep you amused with the games, photo DJ, music etc & in my opinion, the best phone EVER!

Sadly due to its rough lifestyle with me, it's starting to slow down & it's time to move on, but I am going to find it very hard to get rid of this phone! I so wish I could buy it again : ( If you ever get the chance to buy this phone though I definitely would!

I cannot think of a better Sony Ericsson phone. It's durable, reliable, features are tip top. I have had it for nearly 3 years & it worked sweet all this time until I broke the screen. My wife gave me her W910i but it drove me mad! Switching off every now & then & applications took ages to load. What a rubbish phone!

Looked for a replacement at a decent price on the market in August 2009 & couldn't find Sony Ericsson of similar qualities. W580i is similar but very, very fragile. I ended up buying second hand W850i again on eBay. Cost me 40quid & I am happily reunited with an old friend!

recommend W850i to anyone who appreciates value, reliability, features & durability!

Well done Sony Ericsson!

I bought this phone when it first came out at quite a steep price. I must say it has been the best investment I have made. I have had it for four years now & had absolutely no problems with it. I must admit I am not the most careful of persons I drop it at least once a day on hard surfaces for four years & it has never ever broken. It literally has everything you could want or need in a phone even being able to make your own music! It saddens me that I am being forced into buying a new phone every speck seems worse than the last comparing with what this phone does! I would have it forever if people didn't bad mouth how old my phone is!

Great phone it's my birthday tomorrow so I am getting a new phone but I have had the Sony Ericsson W850i for a year & a half & recommend it.

It has a couple of features that are helpful & easy shortcuts that are very useful its great with music & can download MP3 & WMA.

I have had no faults & never had to complain to Sony Ericsson.

It is a tough phone I have dropped it a couple of times & it has no scratches.

Personally I think it has a nice look.

I like the music DJ & the features but is not as good as new phones.

If your looking for a great phone that is reliable & don't mind spending £90 for a phone that was made 3 years ago, it would be great for you.

Full marks. Great phone. Shame it is now discontinued as mine is in need of some repair but I'd rather just buy another one.

I love the chunky buttons, makes things so much easier. One of the few Sony Ericsson's with a flash! & is relatively cheap. Mine was very usable until it was stood on but it is still fighting on. However, it also got dropped in a puddle so it is now failing on me.

TOP PHONE. TOP MARKS :).

For all the people rating this phone's Usability as less than 80%, seriously, I've had this phone for almost two years now. (Yes I am about to update but I grew attached) & it's been nothing but brilliant.

The Usability & Navigation is amazing.

The camera isn't very good but what do you expect from 2 megapixels? If you wanted a good camera you should have bought the k800i or something with a better camera.

As for the fact it's so robust! Honestly, I have dropped it many a time & it doesn't even flicker let alone break! This phone is incredible & I'd recommend it to anyone! :).

It's a really simple phone, really good for simple features. The camera's not that good & the phone is quite chunky, but it's very simple to use. I haven't had a problem with it & I've had it for a few months. The sound quality it excellent & it has a lot of features you need.

I would totally suggest you get this phone :D.

Yeah I have had my W850i phone for 15 months now the main error is that the battery discharges quickly : ( I am thinking of getting the Samsung Steel or the Soul now but it will be testing to change after my Sony Ericsson collection.

I stress this is a good phone & is definitely better than an W580i.

I've had this phone for 18 months now so everyone else's opinion is rubbish. It's a bit on the chunky side & isn't the prettiest phone I've ever had, however it has provided me with 18 months of enjoyable MP3 playing, Internet surfing & the odd phone call. A faithful companion, the phone version of a black Labrador.

I have only encountered one problem & that was with a faulty battery suddenly getting very hot & discharging.

I especially like the Sony Ericsson navigation & am finding it hard to switch to another brand, so I am a little bit reluctant to let it go.

I've crammed it full of mp3s, videos & all sorts of applications & I can only remember it crashing on me once, seems very stable. Music playback quality is pretty acceptable too.

The main flaw in the design is that the slider can be a bit tricky to manage one handed & if you try texting one handed you could well drop it, this is due to the centre of gravity being a bit too high.

Overall I would recommend this phone as long as you can put up with its size & ugliness.

Had the phone for nearly 18 months now.

Good Points.
- Walkman application is good, maybe not loud enough for some.
- Structurally very sound, been dropped more times than I can remember & still in perfect working order.
- Good choice of applications & stuff for the gadget hungry.

Bad points.
- As a phone this handset is useless, it is very hard to get & keep a signal & once it loses signal it takes forever to get it back. I often have to switch it off & start again. Very poor reception too. Is this just a problem with the Vodafone network though?
- Battery life is quite poor, I am a moderate use game player & battery lasts no more than 24 hours.
- Camera is dreadful & pictures are so bad you're better off not using the camera at all.

Overall not a phone I've been particularly happy with, glad my contract is now up. Not been too impressed with any of the different Sony phones I've had (this is my third), I certainly won't have another Sony phone in the future. Looking to switch back to good old Nokia (Nokia 6300 looks good) or maybe Samsung.

It was a great phone. AMAZING! Quite a simple phone with all the features you need including a 2MP camera, Walkman, games, & so on.

It lasted me about 18 months. I dropped it so many times. It can withhold a lot of damage. Although it broke on me when I fell on it & smashed the screen. But that was my fault.

It can store a good bit of memory & is easy to use.

Although with most Ericsson phones I have got they do tend to freeze the odd time. But that is probably due to the amount of rubbish I put on them!

Overall it is a great phone. & will last you a long time, even if its dropped. (Don't be throwing it off a wall! )

Great value for money.

PROS.
- Doesn't break easily.
- Great earphones.
- Well sized buttons with a good feel.
- Well lit 320 by 240 screen.

CONS.
- Has immense problems reading tags from AAC files, all songs from an album are sorted in the wrong order & have to be rearranged manually.
- Not the greatest camera in the world.
- Impossible to turn the shutter sound off.
- Included software for PC is so so.
- A bit on the big & heavy side.

What a great handset. I've had this phone for around 18 months now, & I think it is dead good. It's very easy to use & comes with some really good features. It looks great & very sleek. It stores a large number of songs on the Walkman, & it also stores over 800 texts which I think it's pretty good. As my sisters Samsung only stores 250 maximum.

When I first got the phone, I couldn't fault it, but I don't think the camera is as good as it was. I can't zoom on it, but I have a digital camera so I don't really mind. But cameras in most phones aren't that good anyway so.

All in all, an awesome phone, I'd definitely recommend it.

This is honestly the best phone you could wish for. I take loads of pictures with the 2MP camera & they are all of very good quality considering its only 2MP, always nice & clear provided you keep the phone still! The light is admittedly pretty rubbish though, nice & bright but just a kind of bright glare.

The Walkman is good but I don't use it often, only thing is I always click on the Orange Walkman button accidentally which is easy to do, but it isn't a big deal.

The phone has a really easy to use interface & doesn't mess around with over complicating things, which is the way I like it :).

I also like the list of names you've recently texted when you go to send a message. I don't know if all Sony Ericsson phones have this but I find it really handy :).

The ONLY thing I would change about this phone is locks, on some phones you can put locks on your messages or pictures etc so you can let people have a go without worrying about them reading your private messages, but all you get here is PIN & phone codes. If the W850i had that, I would happily use it forever :D.

PROS.
- Great camera & okay video recording.
- Very simple interface.
- Easy to personalise with themes etc.
- Very good FM radio built in.
- Expandable memory.
- Literally indestructible!

CONS.
- A bit bulky to put in your pocket.
- Can't turn off the shutter sound on the camera.
- Can't store very many messages, but it's quick & easy to delete several at once.

An awesome phone!

Bad points.
- When you talking to somebody & you want to end the call you can't slide the hone down & end the call.
- the battery life is rubbish.
- & when you slide the phone up sometimes the Walkman turns on.

Good points.
- the Walkman features are good.
- Pictures come out good.
- the phone is not that hard to use.

Overall I've found this is a great phone.

Somebody below said something like the slide mechanism is not so durable, charging not great, phone will automatically switch off, etc (note the same person still gave phone high scores). Well not sure what they're talking about, the sliding mechanism was one of my big concerns about getting this phone, but I've had it for almost 2 years & no issues so far, despite dropping phone a number of times. If the phone switched off when it's not supposed to & it's under warranty, he or she should have taken it back for repair. I had to take my phone back only once for repair in the first 3 months (software functionality problems), no problems since.

I change to a new phone every year, this phone is the first time after expiry of my 12 month contract that I've decided not to switch phone, the phone has been that good for me personally. Good memory capacity (1GB stick as standard) for use as a casual music player & anything else you might want on there (e.g. Mp4 video), great battery performance, good keypad, solid organisational tools, very easy to use backup phonebook to memory stick feature, lots of interesting useful functions (e.g. You can use it as a Bluetooth remote control for your computer! ), & more. Just a great all rounder. Highly recommended. (the 80% Design score is just because there are slimmer phones out there & not because it's a badly designed, because it's not! ).

P.S. Oh, side note that might be useful for a few of you, it has great compatibility abilities! Officially you can only use this phone with Windows XP 2000 & later, I use Windows ME, but if you DON'T use the software that comes with the phone & just plug the phone straight into your computer, it will recognise it as a USB device & you'll still be able to stick music, mp4 video & anything else on there!

Well I have had this phone for 18 months, the full length of my contract but its time to hang up the earphones. I did have to take it back once for a repair under warranty, it was returned in 3 days (3 Network). My view is this could happen to anything you buy. If it was a repeating problem, that's different.

It has been a great phone. I wasn't convinced when I first saw it because it didn't look the most appealing but the salesman 'sold' it to me. Never looked back. Not even entertaining any other make this time. The whole family have Sony Ericsson's now.

It is now available cheap as chips. Arguably one of the best phones I've had.

If you haven't already figured it out, I'd recommend this phone to anyone.

Long live the W850i!

I had it 18 months & never had any major problems with it! The Walkman is great, I put a 4GB memory card in it & had over a thousand songs & hundreds of pictures. The camera is good enough but it does get dirty so you have to clean it with a cotton bud regularly. I've dropped this phone so many times now & it still works. It's indestructible! The battery started to go recently, it used to be great & last for days. The only annoying thing about it is its size, it's hard to fit into your pocket as it's quite thick.

Overall though the phone was great, it has everything you need of a high standard & doesn't crash or freeze! I just got an iPhone to replace it & the only difference is the touch screen. It really is one of the best phones I have ever had!

I would rename the phone as droppable phone. I purchased this phone 18 months ago in January 2007 on contact from 02. I purchased this phone at the very first moment I saw its advert. Went to Carphone Warehouse Shop & just purchased it on £35 a month contact & offering 600 minutes & 100 text (calling was priority than text).

Since then it has seen all the different seasons of summer, winter, rainy, snowy all, & plus experience every bit of these seasons. It had sun-bathing, freezing experience, rainfall, & also played with snow. In all these circumstances it worked out to be perfect without any defect in its functionality. I have dropped this phone lot of times since then, at least twice in a week, either from my hand or from my pocket (not on bed, but on a sturdy surface like rock).

It has loads of features that few might require that many. & has good compatibility with PC while transferring files, & with other mobiles to transfer music, photos, videos, & plus many games are compatible for this phone which were even built for some older version of Walkman or altogether for other phones. Best of all music quality was exceptionally brilliant, & loud voice its speaker & head-phone produce.

One fact that's true is that, dust gathers around camera very easily hence deteriorating the picture quality, which is again as difficult to clean. & dust gather on front camera is worst to clean.

Other facts, the navigation buttons (up, down, left & right) & difficult to operate especially down button, which makes it difficult to play games requiring down action.

Now as the contact got over, I upgraded to Sony Ericsson W910i, which is again slim brother of W850i with same features, but with some few additional such as SenseMe technology, & having Wide Screen, & totally different look & feel from previous mobile.

Will definitely ask users to buy W850i, but it has gone old now if you require new phone with same features than go for W910i. But still would recommend W850i for its sturdy & robust body.

Well what can I say, had it 18 months & its ace! Yeah some stuff isn't perfect on it like there's a crack on the directional buttons, the speaker is starting to go (had it 18 month though) the camera does a job no its not perfect but you buy a camera if you want really good quality pictures, I just want to take pictures of my mates drunk so its fine! Also when I say it cracked. I have dropped it a lot (really clumsy) & it's always been fine all the dents are my fault but it still works, I read some stuff on this page about t-mobile personally I think they been ace, 35 quid for 180 pound worth of credit can't go wrong & I never found any unknown charges on my bill! Very good phone & a top deal from t mobile.

However I am getting the w580i tomorrow on the same tariff & I have just dropped down reading some of the reviews that it's got, oh well only time will tell put really this is a good phone if your tall & drop things a lot like me!

This phone is a good phone & overall 85%.

A few problems of it unlocking in my pocket & going on my pictures, Walkman & mainly the Internet & costing me money, I have made a dud Internet settings & that way it can't.

But with that aside the Walkman is excellent & the speaker phone is OK the games are a little dull but the memory & the video capability is OK.

One more fault is it does not have a camera slide to stop the dust getting in & get some seriously bad pictures until you clean the lens with a cotton bud.

I have had the phone for 18 months & had not replaced it due to freezing or unable to use it.

It was changed due to being dropped in the last month of the contract.

I've now had this phone for over 12 months. It's good, but certainly not perfect. My main issues with the phone are as follows.

- There is no option to have a repeating text or missed call alert. I can't understand why all manufacturers don't include this as an option. My wife's Samsung has it, it is the main reason why I will not buy another Sony Ericsson unless they change their policy on this.

- If you keep the phone in your pocket It is prone to occasionally connecting to the Internet (or even dialling out) by itself even when the keylock is on.

- On occasions the whole phone has frozen (switching off & on again, or removing the battery fixes this).

Other points, the camera isn't brilliant (but that doesn't bother me too much), battery life was quite good at first but it's starting to deteriorate a bit.

Just make sure you charge it as long as possible when you buy it so that battery life sustains for its long life! It will gradually decrease in time (But this is the same with all batteries! )

Ace phone.

Four words, don't buy on t-mobile.

The phone is OK, features are pretty bad but this is made up for by the excellent Walkman. I have a close to full 4GB memory card & I love the music side of the phone.

Now the bad stuff:
- Slide is stiff & jams sometimes.
- Games are seriously bad.
- FM radio picks up roughly 3 radio stations.

On T-mobile:
- Texts would often not come through, then all come at once.
- I would often end up with 7 minute calls turning up on my bill which I had not made, very expensive.
- I was on 40p a minute, so you might be thinking aha the texts will be extremely cheap then. Wrong. They are 3p, to t-moile. 10p anywhere else. So 6 texts a day & a 1 minute call which is about my average, costs me £1.

Phone: decent.
T-mobile mates rates may as well go & burn your money.

I got my W850i on contract in December 2006 because I wanted a phone with MP3 playback that I could upload from my computer. That was the main reason for getting it. I really liked the Walkman, instant access, button on the front & its slide up key cover design. It has performed faultlessly since I've had it.

BUT, it does have a few niggling flaws which have prompted me to upgrade to a Nokia N81.

Predictive Text
When using the predictive text, every time it comes across a word it doesn't know, it displays a little box with as many as 7 or 8 possible words in it. You have to scroll down the list, select the required word & enter it into the sentence. All well & good, until the next time you want to use the same word. That's when you discover that the W850i doesn't learn words & you have to use the scroll box method again & again. Also, if you want symbols, you have to use the options not, as with the N81, the star or 1 keys. I lost patience with it & went back to multi-tap.

Cameras
The rear camera gets dirty really easily & requires constant cleaning as does the front Video call camera. At 2 Megapixels it should take fairly good pictures but it doesn't. My new N81 also has 2 Megapixels & the picture quality is far superior. & finally, not just a niggle but a real complaint.

Music Transfer
Once you've convinced the software that you really & truly have connected the phone to the computer & the on screen box stops reading 'No device found' whilst the phone continually turns itself off & then on again & repeatedly asks for the pin & lock codes you may now transfer 'files' into the phone. I say files not tracks because you cannot transfer tracks. There is no facility that allows the use of your media player, you can only use the file names. So, if the file name is a web address or is misnamed then that's what you have to search for, which, for me, is a real pain in the neck & a source of severe frustration & more than a little swearing. You can't transfer entire Albums with the W850i unlike the N81 which, by comparison, is a pleasure to use & in my opinion beats the W850i hands down.

Don't get me wrong though. The W850i is a good phone despite the flaws. It's easy to use, has a good menu system & the music player is great (once you've managed to upload it), although it sounds better through the headphones than the tinny mono speaker on the back.

Even so, as soon as I could upgrade, I did & with no regrets. It will soon have a new home with my Best Mate who doesn't own a computer, isn't interested in the camera & only texts using multi tap so I am giving it to him.

I am BIG with phones as I usually have about 5 phones a year just because I can afford it but I kept this phone until yesterday when it got stolen, miss it so much can't believe it.

Well, I am sorry to say, even though it is packed with features, I have found this phone to be the most annoying phone I have ever owned.

If you're male, then there is a good chance that you will keep your phone in your pocket. This is a big mistake. The phone doesn't always lock properly anyhow, but when it's in your pocket, the phone can make a call, text someone, surf the net or start playing MP3's which is most bizarre. For these reasons, I personally despise this phone.

However, my wife also owned this phone & she used to enjoy playing games & those clever people at Sony Ericsson decided to put the Walkman feature button just above the up button on the control pad. Playing games is a near impossibility without inadvertently switching on the Walkman.

Overall, I am glad I've got shot of it.

I got this phone because at the time (January 2007) it was the number one selling online phone. I was a bit nervy switching from Nokia but the w850i has not disappointed. It's practical, functional & intuitive. I haven't really used it for the Walkman but its decent enough. The camera is rubbish but again that doesn't bother me. Its things such as tasks, notes, speaker phone, memory & the ease of use, which does it for me.

The down side is that is bulky. The most annoying thing is that it can slide up & down in your pocket which automatically disables the lock. I have phoned people, gone on the net & even sent a blank text without releasing!

I think Sony Ericsson have decent phones, a real all rounder. I would like to stick with them if they had a phone which was lighter (the k800i is my work phone & is brilliant).

The only bad thing about it is (as with previous Sony's) after some time of owning, the applications & games have been deleted from the phone, even the ones I could not delete myself! It's never stuck or had many problems with the battery life, or turning itself off (well maybe a couple of times).

I am only sorry that I can no longer get this phone on my contract, as I have to upgrade to a W880i, but it's hideous in gold, so am sending this back. Sony's are best for style, but sometimes a little fiddly to use.

After commenting before on the 28th July 2007. I am going to say that I am sorry. I have had this phone now for nearly a year & to be honest it was a good phone. Until recently every time I open the phone it goes white & freezes on me! So to unfreeze it I have to take out the battery & then the memory card & then put it all back together again.

Every time I go to text somebody, the picture starts to slowly move across the screen & then white lines will appear, & it will slowly start to freeze & then it will, go white again completely.

I have sent my phone off once to be fixed & they said it would take about a week to fix but it took 3. After having this phone & it being one of the best phones I have ever had & then going & breaking on me several times it has given me no other choice but to buy a different phone. However many people have said that when the phone was in their pocket it used to ring people, mine has never done that yet!

So if you are looking for a good phone please do not but this phone, as it is unreliable & could freeze on you at any minute.

I have had my phone for 4 months & it has been back for repair 3 times because the camera keeps on turning out blurred pictures. I realised that was because the lens needs constant cleaning. This was not picked up by the repair centre & a new camera was installed each time, so I was told. A bad design fault, no wonder this phone was discontinued.

I have had this phone since October 2007 (the white version on Vodafone) & have not had one problem with it. It is such a sleek phone especially in white & gold only if all Sony Ericsson's Walkman phones were like this one, I prefer it by far to even the w910i which although has good music facilities, is rather ugly in my opinion so I got the k850i instead. This is one phone I intend to keep forever (along with my k850i), a lot of people have been trying to buy it off me but they don't stand a chance it is not going anywhere, outstanding phone.

I have had this phone for just under 1 year now & I have to say, it has done what I wanted it to do.

I bought this phone for the Walkman really. I didn't want an iPod, & my mates all said that Sony Ericsson's were the next best thing.

The music player is the best feature on the phone, but it really has everything you need. You have a 2MP camera, which is not great, but is good enough for what I need, a wide selection of games if you know where to download them from.

Another advantage for me was the Bluetooth, as infra-red is shockingly painful.

Overall, this is a cracking phone, & when I can, I will upgrade to the K850i for the better camera.

Unfortunately get to grips with it as it died within 24 hours of ownership!

The on & off (flimsy) push button on the top stopped working so I had to remove the battery to switch it off! The directional cursor control on the centre of the unit stopped working (couldn't scroll down) & the number 8 on the keypad also stopped working! I blame a rather cheap feeling pressure pad instead of a more robust joystick or toggle. The up button on the directional pad was too close to the centre enter key which meant that if I wasn't careful I was entering instead of pressing up or activating the Walkman feature, not good even with normal sized hands. A shame really as the phone looked & felt good whilst being packed with features. My first Sony Ericsson (Z200) was faultless, the next one (K510i) lasted 3 weeks before it had power on & off fluctuation problems & this one lasted.

Had this phone on an 18 month contract. Loved everything about it. So easy to use & has loads of memory. Solid phone without being too bulky. Battery life was about 3-4 days & I used it quite regularly. Foolishly upgraded to Nokia E65. Hate it. Usual Nokia plastic compared to Sony Ericsson. Stuck for 18 months. Definitely going back to Sony Ericsson. Miss it! Would recommend this phone to young & old alike.

I've had this phone just over a year now, it's seriously on the verge of death me thinks. It is surprisingly good considering how unreliable it can be though, the Walkman is incredible, games are great & the camera, though not the best quality, is good enough for a phone. The outer case is poor, mine is cracked & slightly loose, several of my friends are seeing this with their W850i's too.

Could anyone tell me what a good, significant upgrade from this phone is? I have an iPod Touch so music is of little importance, but I would like a good camera. I am tempted by the Viewty but after reading some reviews I am not so sure. Any advice?

Had this phone for 18 months, it's been a great phone. Love it.

Perfect for music lovers, just as good as the new w910i the only feature the w910i has over this phone is the shake control on the music which for me is no big deal but the w910i has no light or flash on the camera so it evens out. Thus is a simple phone to use with all the basics covered & extra's as well

The con I've had with this phone was that when I had a missed call it would bring up my Internet options & wipe the missed call, so I had no idea who called me, very strange. However in the end I just restored the phone back to its original factory setting & the problem went away.

All in all a great phone, & more than holds its own in the phone market against some of the newer phones which fail on the basics in my opinion.

I got this phone after having W810i for a year, which is a top phone to beat Walkman wise, first I would like to say that it's a great design, OK I admit it may be a bit bulky in the pocket compared to the W810i, but I think that it looks really smart compared to some of the phones on the market today, it has more or less everything you would want from a phone in terms of features like the 2.0 MP camera & the mint Walkman 2.0 media player, also it has the 3G features such as the video calls & such like.

The sound quality produced is really good & if you liked the W810i then you will most likely love this, OK there is one feature that should have been included but was booted out for an unknown reason & that was the auto focus feature on the camera, which would have made the camera in the same league as the W810i, but unfortunately isn't on that feature alone.

As soon as I saw somebody with this last year, I knew I had to have it, & know I finally have one I think I will keep it till it dies on me.

Overall it's a well designed phone, descent features but with some basic overlooked flaws.

I have had the Sony Ericsson W850i for 8 months now & I am fed up with it, yes it's a great music phone, yes the features work perfectly, yes, yes, yes but & a big but it is so dull & it is a big handset.

I was counting down the days until I could change the W850i. I was going to wait to the end of my contact, but I am happy to say I have set my old contact to the minimum payment plan & I am going to start a new contact with a fabulous new phone. I saw a great deal here on this site, really worth a look if you want a new phone or if you have the dull W850i like me.

Anyway I would say this is a good phone but DULL, if you are looking for something more impressive have a look at the new Sony Ericsson :).

This was a class phone when I first got it. It is an extremely easy to use phone. I got it a year ago. The screen is a bit too small & I always push the little Walkman button by accident when I am trying to use other buttons. The wee silver bit on the back of the slide up bit is pointless & ruins the look of the phone a bit. I think they should have put the camera there because it looks rubbish on the back & can get very dirty. The music player is really good & so is the camera. I like the way the Orange light flashes with the beat of the music. Oh yeah & the memory is amazing. It's got 1GB phone memory & mine came with a free 2GB memory card. It's a great phone & I would recommend it to anyone that is looking for a phone to buy. Although I would say to get the new Walkman which is what I am upgrading mine to.

I had the Sony-E W850i for 7 months before I lost it.

I must say I have been impressed by this phone, my 1st Sony. Software nice & easy to use. MP3 player excellent, & considering it's a mobile phone the 2MP camera is actually excellent! Far from exceptional, but as someone else said it: or you want a camera-phone, or you want a Music player.

This phone never froze on me, never blocked, never erased my contacts. The battery life was good as I never thought about it. The design is original & modern. The casing never fell apart, but I've always taken care of it that must be why.

BUT! The MOST ANNOYING thing was. That when in my Jean's pocket, it VERY OFTEN managed to 'unlocked' himself & call friends, browse the Internet. That ultimately led to me loosing the D* phone as I took it out of the safest place on Earth: my pocket. So that's the 60% on usability. But all in all, a pretty, neat, reliable phone, I recommend! Especially if you like music, & at under £90 now. So want to stay with Sony & try the K800i now with 3.2 MP camera & very good reviews overall.

It has a fantastic camera, & the front facing camera is very useful for video calls, although it cannot be accessed unless you are in a video call, which is a shame. It would be nice if it could be used as a mirror or something along those lines.

Reasons are the keypad not responding quickly enough (so when texting there are a lot of incorrect characters), the lack of music & pictures supported for viewing & general slowness of the phone.

What I don't like about this though, are the add on software (update manager, music manager ) that comes with it. They are only compatible with Windows. I just wish they make it more compatible with other operating systems too.

I got this phone a year ago as I am on contract with 3. I only really chose this phone due to the reputation of Sony Ericsson & the fact that it has MSN free. I usually keep my W850i in my jeans pocket if I don't have a pocket in my jacket. Anyway, my screen is now not working. I have to fight the phone to get the screen to come on. If I switch it off to charge it, the screen lights up white unless I half slide the screen. The phone still works, as I can play music I JUST CAN'T SEE WHAT I AM DOING! If anybody knows anything of this problem please let me know.

Had this Phone since August 2007 & have had it replaced 3 times because of blown front ear speaker (no I don't have the phone ear speaker turned to full).

I have also had the problem where I loss installed Java Games. They install play a few times go back & there gone. No one is sure of what has caused this but I reckon it's down to the very poor key lock which seems to disappear itself & end up entering the menu system very easy.

Battery live is OK. Mine last about 3 to 4 days but I don't leave Bluetooth on all the time & very really use the camera or video functions. Camera has an OK quality for 2MP but I have had other phones with better but I paid a lot more for them. Software on the phone is easy to use compared to some phones I had in the past. Slide function doesn't end calls which I found out the hard way which seems Stupid to me when you can answer the phone with the slide.

The Sound Quality is very good as you would expect from this type of phone but you can get better just by buying a MP3 player. Phone did come with a 1GB memory card which I found to be very good & I can move things from the phone to the card very easily.

That's it for my review, thanks for reading & Happy Christmas.

Otherwise phone does what is say's on tin. Regarding problems with slider had none. Boys try keeping it in your handbag it doesn't slide there!

This phone generally is very good. It feels good looks good too. It's a bit chunky thought. The camera isn't so good & the Walkman keeps playing because the keypad lock is so easy to unlock. When at school sometimes music plays because the keypad has unlocked itself & the Walkman has started to play. The call register doesn't even work properly. There are better on the market but do research before you buy.

I've had my 850i for a year now, it's OK, not the prettiest of things but quite robust! Pictures aren't very good but then it's a Walkman phone, not a cyber shot! The keys can seem quite close together & I do find my fingers doing the wrong things, but the very biggest pain is the keypad lock, it says it does, & it seems to, but then you get it out your pocked & its sent you a picture by MMS that you've taken on the phone, or its surfing the net or even worse its phoned anyone it feels like & you find people shouting at you from your pocket to switch your phone off! I got a clear hard plastic cover from the Carphone Warehouse which seems to have stopped it having a mind of its own, but that has brought along other problems, it makes it a lot bulkier, the charger doesn't sit in properly & sometimes doesn't connect, & texting is a weary job because the cover comes too close to some of the keys. Just about to upgrade, thinking of the W910i, just hope they've ironed out all their problems!

3 branded Sony Ericsson W850i has a fantastic screen & sound quality. I turned my phone brightness down to 50% & it still usable. The sound is obviously great because it is a Walkman phone.

It looks good too & the funky flush navigation buttons, whilst confusing at first, are a good feature. The location of the Walkman button could have been better because there is a tendency to knock it accidentally. The sliding mechanism is firm & always feels like a quality product.

The only letdown is the camera. The lens is a small circular hole on the back that quickly collects all the dust from your pockets. Because it is so badly designed you can't clean it easily either, leaving you with a very bad picture quality. Saying that, the camera light is brilliant, it's like a mini torch.

A small thing that bugs me is the lack of end call button that takes you back to the main screen with one push. Instead you have a back button that has to be held down for a few seconds.

BEST is the Camera & Walkman Feature.
WORST is the front navigating panel cracks easily.

Had this phone for about a year & can't wait for my next upgrade. Yes it is true the phone has many features & I agree with some comments that the music & radio are good.

The fact that calls go silent for a few seconds intermittently is very annoying. The battery life is rubbish. Saving a new contact is very slow! Closing the slide does not end the call, you have to press the end call button, why? why? It has option to answer when opening!

But without a doubt the most annoying thing is, the automatic key lock is useless, many a time have I taken the phone out of my pocket & it has been surfing on its own! & there is no manual keypad lock! Not impressed.

This phone has the looks & the features to become a legend, but as the time for upgrade was looming I went to a phone shop that supplies my firm with their phones & asked advice on a new phone, (MPC Romford) when I told him that I was thinking about the w850i he said that I should stay well away as out of 100 sold he has sent 80 back with all the faults that you have listed here! So in the true British style I went & got it anyway.

Now the truth is I love it! When it works but I have had the phone for nine months & it has spent three months on different occasions being fixed! & from the start the cause was water damage! What do they think I go swimming with this thing! Oh & when I phoned the repair centre to ask where my phone was they told me that it was water damage & then asked me if I used the phone outside! 'Well yes! It's a mobile phone! ' & they said that it could be the damp in the air causing the water damage? As the phone is apparently one of the least water proof on the market!

It has called one of my friends several times by its self, the battery now holds little charge, the ear piece has gone again, & I am now giving up! Great phone! Yes I love it but it just does not work & for those of you that have a good one then I envy you but I will never get another.

I am getting this phone in a few days as I have already ordered it & from what I've heard. It's a brilliant phone. I don't mind how big the phone is as long as it doesn't weigh so much & it fits in my pocket & I also think anyone that would care about such a small thing like that is just picky &. Well anyway, I like the design seen as it's the best looking phone I've ever seen before due to its simplistic design. The features are pure genius & the sound is just amazing. It's the perfect phone for anyone. My friend has the phone & I see it almost every day. It's not at all big compared to most phones I've seen & the sound is beautiful. I think that if anyone chooses any make other than Sony Ericsson then there wasting there time & money. I bought a k700i around 2 years ago & have dropped it a few hundred times, I dropped water on it & it even fell down a flight of stairs & its still working fine, not perfect, but fine. I have always found Sony Ericsson's easy to use. & compared to Nokia there features are much more impressive & this phone is by far the best phone I've come across for a while.

I disagree with people saying the phone's design is bad, the buttons are easy to press & the slider is very smooth, better than d900's. This phone has pretty much every feature you could want apart from symbian & WLAN & EDGE, but then again, normal users would be satisfied without these features, besides it will cost more battery power for these features anyway, hence the n95 received a mixed review.

The loudspeaker on this phone is the loudest in the entire Walkman series, the Walkman is easy to use, it has mega bass, but it has a problem, once you enter a particular album, you have to go all the way back to the beginning to select songs from other albums. The radio on this phone is nice, if you hear a nice song & want it, it displays the song & artist name.

The camera is one of its weaknesses, at 2.0 without AF, it gives blurred photos if the target is moving. The video recording is poor, very pixelated. But, this phone has many modes of shooting such as burst, panama, etc.

The strengths of this phone are it has all the office tool, such as alarms, calculator & a voice recording device that never stops unless chooses to. This phone has 5 alarms, so you can manage your time well, it will keep ringing until you make it stop. You can chance the ringtone/text tone to any of your MP3 songs.

This phone also has a small light at the back, which can act as a torch. It can take shots in pitch black, & it looks like as if it has been taken in daytime. The battery is wonderful here, it lasted me 12 hours without recharge.

The Walkman player button is not in a good place but I am not 2 bothered about that. & the last problem is the texting, if you are a fast texter like me it seems to be a bit slow so you could be writing one thing & it will end up all funny & have letters in the wrong place. This phone is excellent! The camera is excellent, & the videos. The music player is fabulous, the bonus is it comes with 1GB, I have about 1000 songs on mine & I can still hold another 1000 if I wanted to. I broke the screen 2 days after buying it by falling off a roundabout (which I suppose was my fault) but since then I have dropped the phone several times & it hasn't damaged it at all! This phone is excellent! I rate it 9/10.

This phone is so rubbish. I've had it since UK release & regret ever upgrading to it. The design is shocking - the key lock slide only works when it wants to & you will find that you are making calls when left in your pocket. The two buttons on the top have given up.

The music package does not automatically import album art. The Walkman button is awkwardly placed. I am on my second one as the volume keeps dropping when I am on a call - it still happened on my replacement handset.

Will be upgrading to W960i ASAP!

Features are pretty Sony Ericsson standard now, which is good. Oh & it's a brick of a phone, why so fat? Camera is rubbish too. Really poor photos.

Initially I liked this phone, smaller than my Nokia 6680 & a better quality screen with brighter colours. It tends to lose the signal more than my Nokia did though. It has a majorly annoying problem of unlocking while in your pocket. When I removed the phone from pocket today it had at least six different applications open. Spent what seemed like ages trying to close them down & get the main screen back. It has also cut off a few calls while in my pocket, phone starts to ring then stops quickly. I can only presume this is because the phone has unlocked & one of the buttons is being pressed. Also I don't think the phone is as loud as the Nokia.

The alarm clock, if set, also goes off even if the phone is switched off. I don't know if this is meant to happen but at 5am on my day off it's rather annoying.

Overall a good phone but not as good as the Nokia 6680, which I am going to get out of the cupboard & start using again.

Had this phone now for 6 month & although I love most of the features (for anyone who hasn't used it, play with the face warp you'll have a ball with it) I have to admit that the buttons on the front are a big pain as it's constantly wapping whilst in your pocket so you don't know it's costing you money. My biggest problem with it though is the music player button is in the worst possible place because I always hit it when sliding it open which is a big pain especially when your trying to be discrete & for this reason alone I am thinking of selling it & getting a Samsung U600, can anyone talk me out of this.

I've had my phone for 3 months now & for the past 2 weeks every incoming & outgoing call regardless of area, landline or other mobile network, all I hear in the ear speaker is a faint person's voice with a static hissing even when I speak. It is high pitch & ear piercing. This is not the only problem, the mobile also rings randomly when in my pocket, the mobile unlocks its self & loose the call when in mid conversation. All 3 could suggest was I take it back to my nearest 3 shop & they may repair it & may or may not give me a temporary replacement. The way I feel at the moment they should replace it immediately free of charge.

I regret ever getting this phone. It's a big old brick which has a most annoying habit of calling people whilst in your pocket. The auto lock doesn't work if there's a dialogue on the screen or you've left it in the menus. The camera is nowhere near as good as the one on the K750i that I had previously. The 1 GB storage & screen size are good as is the Walkman, however I hardly use this as I have an MP3 player with all my tunes on it.

Overall an average phone. Will be replacing it soon with the W960i when available.

Only problem I can say is when using file transfer on your computer the phone freezes every now although this hardly ever happens. Very easy to use & other than that I've never had a problem with it. If you are fine with the size of it you should like it you also get a free 1GB card with it free in the box.

Just returned this after a day of perplexity, going back my Motorola V3. I am sure it's packed with features, but the user interface is ghastly, it has 12 buttons on it apart from the numeric keys for goodness sake! They all do different things depending on where you are in its labyrinthine menu system, & the most useful keys (Cancel & Back) are particularly tiny. I thought in my naivety that a slide phone would de-activate when you close it (like a clamshell) but no, most of the buttons are happily making calls etc when the phone is shut. The alarm function proudly claims to go off even with the phone switched off! Have these guys ever been to the theatre? It's a lot fatter than my clamshell, so won't go in a jeans pocket, & has a selection of ringtones that announce to the world that you're a teenager. Full marks to Vodafone though for taking it back without fuss.

It has a recording function to record during the call & it's Walkman is really cool, with a free 1GB memory space, thanks to Sony for the generosity. There are lots of space for music tracks, pictures & videos. The quality of its pictures is great & the sound from the Walkman - very high quality. I know that I bought this phone quite late compare to its first launch, but this phone is highly recommended to buy.

Just got it back from T mobile after they needed it 4 weeks for repairs. It is now even worse. You just touch the plastic between the control buttons & it dials numbers & costs you money. This phone has got to be the biggest joke ever made. If you want information without dialling the Internet or you would like your loose change to run up a very large bill then this is the phone for you. They lent me a phone which did not ring so for 4 weeks I did not have any business unless I sat looking at the phone waiting for a light to go on.

T mobile are the rudest bunch of uninformed people that only tell you what they have been taught to recite. Do yourselves all a favour & move to a phone Company. That will change your non working model for one that does work. T Mobile just sends you another dud & a huge bill for calls you have never made. I think you get the idea. You will find if you want to contact a human being you have to send & email & wait for them to contact you. I waited 3 months for a reply. They take your money & blank you out.

First of all let me just say that I am a big fan of Nokia, so don't judge if I am going to compare it with some Nokia models. Let me start with the design of the phone. I have to admit that this is one of the sleekest looking phones I have ever had in my hand. It is really nice designed & it fits to my hand perfectly. The only thing bothering me is the slider. It is already loosen up a bit & I only have the phone for 3 weeks now.

Next. Fairly good camera. Nice flash but it doesn't do much of a change if you are not really in complete darkness. Good memory. & quite fast reading from the memory card. Software so-so. Really easy to use but still sometimes they could have just made it a bit easier to find or even a lot shorter. Sure you can add shortcuts but still. It's not it. Bluetooth & IrDA. Are good. Standard & at least. Walkman function. Amazing sound. I have never expected that from Sony Ericsson. Congratulations on sound & that was also one of the main reasons I choose the phone. Sounds sweet!

I originally had the Motorola E398, so coming to a phone like this was a pretty big jump. I originally was worried about the button layout of the phone, as it looks very fiddly on the pictures despite this, it's very easy to navigate the menus etc

The camera unfortunately means that when you push the camera button, there is just one step to taking a photo. In other words, it is infinite focus, so everything is within the focal range. The camera is still very good quality at 2MP, & the colour is rich. Also, because it contains the cybershot software, there is a wide range of possibilities.

The Walkman software is definitely much louder than the E398. The speed of the phone is just incredible. You can play a song, & play a game at the same time, & there will be no evident lag. The same applies with using the camera & Walkman at the same time. I know this isn't part of the review, but Nokia phones are dead slow when doing tasks like these, even on their own. The phone supports a wide range of formats for video & music, including AAC & Mpeg4. The 3G network is a great thing too Slide-wise, the best slider I've ever used on a phone. It beats by far the sliders of the Nokia's, which I find are always getting stiff & springy.

All in all, a great phone. Best one I've ever seen or owned, & still when I open it up to use, people have to look twice. If you CAN buy this phone, then DO IT.

I changed this phone from a V3i. What a fool I was. I cannot upload photos or videos, PC will not accept software. My PC is fairly new & I am on Windows XP PRO. Therefore cannot use memory sticks to transfer data. When on the phone I can hear my own voice echo in background all the time. Flash does not work. This phone dials numbers from your pocket even if you lock it. Sound is very tinny.

Worst set of ringtones ever. None of them actually ring, just mindless computer produced electronic junk. I am with T Mobile, they have supplied me with 7 phones of which were of various models yet all faulty. They are just not interested in the public's feelings, just a continual RIP OFF. The latest from them now is 'Send your phone back to us & we will get it repaired'; they will not send me a loan phone. What does anyone do for a phone until it is sent back to you after what could take weeks. Perhaps if they were to supply quality goods that have been tried & tested properly before they were put on the market for sale then perhaps rubbish like the Sony Ericsson W850i would never have gone into mass failure (sorry mass production).

Through T Mobile & mobiles phone companies that are absolute rubbish I am almost all my business & private life without a phone at all. Has anyone had as many problems as myself? If so please add your review to this site whether it is network operators fault or just the phone. My signal is never more than 50% & there are many areas throughout Wales & the West Country where it cannot be used.

I've used Sony Ericsson's for the past 5 years & got to say, yes there is the problem with sticking this phone in your pocket & it slides & even though I've not had any problems, if it makes calls on your behave, but then if you put it in your pocket upside down so it can't slide, can't see how it would make calls. That's what I do anyway. So not a big problem I think.

Since I've only had it for one day, I am still getting used to it, but I've had no problems with it so far, having longish nails, I found that I had a little problem using the keypad at first, but after a couple of hours got used to it.

Just need someone with a 3G phone to call now so I can test out the 3G camera LOL. Well after one day of having it, I would recommend it to anyone who wants a change.

Anyways regarding other people who say it slides open in their pockets, it's never happened to me for the last 5 months since I have been using. JUST BUY IT!

I got this phone based on some really persuading reviews on this very site, so thanks to all of you who tempted me to buy this great phone.

The first & foremost problem that I had was the back cover. Although it opened up fine in the shop & when I put my SIM in it, but after that it wouldn't budge! I kind of ended up giving it a little teeny weeny scratch on the back. I gave up after that of course, couldn't afford to do it anymore damage.

Secondly, I was used to Nokia 3250 before this, which, FYI, has a GREAT camera. Also, its twist feature allows you to take pictures of yourself & I thought that was out-of-this-world. Thus, the fact that I couldn't take my own pictures as perfectly as I could with my Nokia had me a tiny bit displeased.

What's great about this phone is its great design. The biggest plus point, however, is that its software isn't Symbian, like the new Nokia's so it doesn't hang while you're trying to send a message. The keys are easy to use & oh how can I forget the amazing speakers on this little thing! They're like a complete stereo system!

I do have one problem, don't know whether its with my phone or with my network: I receive the same messages like 3 times at least, when the people sending the message haven't really sent them that many times. I receive the same message after like a minute or two of receiving the original one. Anyone else have this problem or know how I can solve this? Thanks.

PS. Sorry for the long review.

PSS. Any of you thinking of buying this phone - I HIGHLY recommend it - go ahead! I bought mine in white, complete with the 24K Walkman logo. I think it looks way cooler than the black. Then again, this friend of mine said that the black's for the guys & the white's for the ladies. Go figure.

This phone is fab! I have had it just about 3 weeks now & I find it marvellous. It's got all the latest features including Track ID which is excellent. The Walkman is fantastic & makes the time spent travelling to school or whatever more fun & quick when you are bopping along to your favourite song!

The only problem is when I put the phone in my pocket, the phone is with slide up & down, when I walk a bunch of numbers will be rung but that's happened once!

If I was you I would buy because it's EXCELLENT, BEAUTIFUL & sleek! This is a deffo buy!

I have had my phone now for 2 months & I love it. I have also dropped it a few times & it is still working! MP3 player is great on it & the radio is clear. The only problem with the phone is the design, a bit big & a little bulky, other than that a great phone. I have looked at other phones on the market & nothing compares to this phone as mine came with 1G memory stick & that is plenty for me. This is the best phone I have had so far. Highly recommended.

Well, nothing is perfect, but this is close for me. I've had this phone for about 4 months now & had no problems. All the features are in there, including the Flash menu's. Sound is good, camera is good (in daylight) & the overall features are good. I had to get used to the keypad at first as it is 'under' the slide mechanism which gets in the way, but now it's easy.

If you hold the # key, the phone goes into silent mode. If you press the power button, you access another profile menu with Shut Down, Silent, Keylock options.

Easy to use, looks very slick - if you set it up right, it won't go off in your bag/pocket. Assign your own shortcuts & it's easy to change profile. Ending calls just press the end call button - just like every other non sliding phone.

No problems with software, no problems with it at all & I have been using Nokia for 3 years, very easy transition to make. Common sense!

As for camera/MP3/Video - all work OK - If I wanted a top spec video camera, I would buy a top spec video camera! Same goes for the MP3 & camera! IT'S A TELEPHONE!

I like it, but then I look after stuff. ITS A PHONE! IT WORKS!

Very annoying how the keys can be unlocked so easily in your pocket. Slight touches & you'll find yourself ringing people & going on the Internet.

No zoom on the 2MP camera. Slightly annoying.

Good music, clear sound & good bass & headset is brilliantly adaptable.

Good phone overall, reliable, sturdy, easy to use & got everything you need. Only downside is some minor adjustments with the design.

I would give this phone a 10/10 for design but it is just so heavy! It is beautiful though, you have to admit!

It is really a 'Swiss-army-knife' of gadgets, packed full of little helpful features.

Using the # key for a space on text messages is a little annoying, but after having a Motorola V3 for three years, its a nice break for my thumb being all easy to open & all!

- Camera, good
- MP3, good
- Phone, good

All in all, I am glad I got it, I just hope it stays this way for another 16 months until the end of the contract!

Rotten phone, DO NOT GO ANYWHERE NEAR IT! It makes calls from your pocket. The slide-open mechanism unlocks the phone & it starts making calls in your pocket in minutes! I then bought a case to prevent it opening, only to find that the two buttons required to press to unlock it stick out a little & unlock the phone in your pocket as well!

You can't win. This phone will cost you a serious amount of money in unintended calls. DO not get it! It makes calls EVERY TIME I put it in my pocket, it is that badly designed. Hence it scores the lowest mark to me for design.

Every time I put it in my pocket, it comes out connected to the Internet, not great when I am traveling across the world it costs a fortune. This happened whilst I was in France & America!

It is so plasticky it looks like a free gift out of a cracker, the back panel feels like ill break it by pressing on it, the slide mechanism is wobbly.

I have had my W850i for 4 months now & I love it. It is my first 3G mobile with loaded features. I have had owned Nokia 1200 (bought 4yrs back) & 6030 (bought 1.5yrs). While I went shopping for a new one, I looked at many mobiles from LG, Motorola & Nokia. I decided on W850i finding no other, better match for my use & my pocket.

Cons:
1. Problems using the navigation keys & the music player shortcut button.
2. It is difficult to see the display properly in daytime, especially if one is outdoor.
3. Keypad's a bit noisy. If only the keys & buttons were better, it would have been more hit in the market.
4. Video recorded is too pixel-ly compared to the still images taken. Could have been better. : (

Pros: 1. Battery life is really good, reached few minutes more than 8 hours. I kept playing music on my 12 hour bus journey, reached home to find I still had 47% left on it, I was very pleased by this.
2. The slider's very smooth, easy to open & close.
3. Sound is really good, beats even my Toshiba lap top's inbuilt speakers. MegaBass really rocks.
4. The built in 2.0 mega-pixel camera has given me the best shots, even when I was traveling, speed ranging from 50kmph-120kmph (only during daytime). Slight blurring occurred at 110kmph onwards.
5. Body is great, gives a good feel.
6. Features are good.

Overall I love it. I am happy I found a good one to hang on until I find one that can beat this baby.

I've had phones from Nokia, Motorola, Samsung & sharp, comparing all of them with this phone. This is the best except for the camera/video, its only second to Sharp V903 wins. But considering all the features, this phone rocks. Themes are very alive & colorful, you can change it depending on your mood. The sound is very good comparing it to others, you cannot stop your self do this head bang thing when you hear the bass coming. The applications are so cool. Dictionary, bible, world facts software which is very important when you travel a lot in different countries it will give you maps & other things you need to know in certain country. It's very cool. Games are amazing especially with the graphics & sound, it's so addicting.

The only thing I don't like with this phone is the video recording, it's below average although the video playing & streaming is good. Also I miss the Office/document viewer.

Just a suggestion on the D-pad that easily breaks, buy a crystal case, it supports the D-pad from breaking & protects the screen. If you buy this case it's in 2 pcs. One for the back & one for the front.

I love this phone very much. Highly recommended.

This is a great phone, reasonably small by today's standards, compact & lightweight, with built in 2 Mega Pixel Camera (on the back), & a smaller video-call camera on the front (near the top). It takes good quality video & still images, which can then be sent (once reduced in size), via MMS to other compatible phones.

It has 3G capability which allows higher data transfer speeds, allowing you to connect to the Internet & download larger files - such as games, applications, screensavers, themes, music, ring-tones etc) with ease. 3G is also used for video-calling. 3G is not yet available in all locations - you can check whether there is coverage in your area on the Vodafone website.

The main reason for buying this phone for many people will be the built in Walkman digital music player & radio, both of which give high quality sound. The music player supports AAC (the format used by Apple) as well as MP3 (& several other formats). It comes supplied with a 1 Gigabyte Memory Stick Duo.

Navigating the phone is fairly straight-forward, as the user interface is quite intuitive. A lot of attention has been paid to style, as the phone looks good, & you can change the appearance quite simply by selecting (or downloading) a different `theme'. It also has some great ring-tones pre-installed.

It comes supplied with software on a CD-ROM to allow you to convert your CD's to MP3 or AAC & then transfer them to the phone. As well as transferring files such as photos or video clips etc. To & from your PC for viewing or printing. I found installing this software to be slightly trying as each application is installed individually - however I got there in the end!

I am really pleased with this phone & would recommend it to anyone looking for a stylish phone with the latest technology.

(Also available in black. Mine is white because it's stylish) Do you think this was very useful! Bye

Having read the reviews for this phone I wanted to redress the balance in its favour, as most of the reviews seem to be by people who either haven't used the phone enough to gauge its performance or by people who seemingly have never used a phone at all. Firstly looks wise. It's sturdy & well built. Ignore anyone who says it's going to break after a couple weeks. I've had mine 5 months now & despite dropping it several times & a close encounter with a huge dog it still has barely a scratch on it. It is bulky. But slider's tend to be & lets be honest it has a lot going on inside! Battery life is fantastic as is ringer volume & sound quality. Both when ringing as a phone or being used to play music. The supplied ringtones are basic but adequate. & who actually uses the ringtones anyway. Surely that's the point of being able to set MP3's & wav files etc as ringtones & message tones. Every other feature on the phone is well thought out & intuitive. The alarms are great & you can set a couple to go off during the week & others for the weekend & change the tones used for each. The calendar & organiser features are great. The camera is more than adequate despite the gripes about auto focus. When my digital camera let me down my phone camera was a more than adequate replacement recently. & the light on it can be set to be used as a torch too. Texting with the phone is dead easy & definitely before reviewing it. If you want a great all round 3G phone, with a great music player, radio, camera, speaker phone, organiser & alarm. I'd get this one. Nuff said!

Have had the W850i for around four months, overall very pleased apart from two main faults.

1) A right pain that you can't end a call by just closing the phone, WHY?

2) Every time I plug in the ear phones it decides to dial the last number called with out me knowing, (a gimmick or a design fault who knows!).

Although the phone is a bit on the large size it is worth a test drive as the good points do seem to out way the bad.

I was a Motorola user for ages but they were too big, bulky & unfashionable for my mates liking & the batteries were bad on 3G.

I got this phone after xmas (with 3) & had it unlocked straight away as I was going to Spain & needed to put in a Spanish sim. Love this phone. Music is great 1GB card included. Great radio. &, I dropped my camera on 4th day so had to use the one on the phone. I especially like the option to take 4 pics quickly (like motor drive). It also comes with morphing software. I must admit I am not a game player so can't talk about that.

Battery lasts for ages compared with v3x. No probs with locking or unlocking.

This is a brilliant phone as it has loads of features incorporated in a simple, yet good looking design, I think that it is one of the best phones on the market & is one of the few phones that rivals the K750i in sturdiness, good value, features, cam, etc.

Buy this, it can be very cheap if you know where to go, i.e. Dial a phone, e2save, etc.

This phone is amazingly awesome. It was a present & after looking at the reviews, I was expecting so many flaws. But this phone is worth the money. The music is great, the speed is great & I just love the slik design. I also like the quick button access like the music player. It's such a clever model. For a music phone the camera is really good the only flaw is probably the video quality which I expected better, however the video quality is better than Nokia 6230.

I would recommend this phone to anyone & you'll never look back.

KEY LOCK! KEY LOCK! KEY LOCK! GGGGGRRRRRRR It's driving me Crazy!

Almost every review about this phone mentions the key lock, it's no surprise as the two most prominent keys are those that unlock the phone, as soon as you put it into you pocket it unlocks & then goes to work all on its own, basically wasting your talktime & costing you a small fortune!

How can Sony Ericsson & or Orange get away with this!?

I have written to them & asked if there were plans to upgrade the software but they replied & said no changes were planned!

Surely this is a basic design fault!

The second problem is the security lock, there isn't one!

My previous phone was a Nokia 6170 & I was able to keylock it with a password but you can't do that either. Phone.

My advice, steer well clear & stick with Nokia!

I've always had Sony Ericsson phones, & generally found them easy to use. Not this one. In order to lock the keypad, you have to open the phone, then close it - even after *answering* a call. If you shut the phone, it doesn't end the call - there's about three buttons to get through to do that. It's a real labour to use - it's like using a Nokia from about 5 years ago (remember when you had to delete your own text message to clear the screen? You don't have to do that, but almost. ). Putting it on silent as you go into a meeting is a complete palaver (open the phone, flick through the menu, change the profile) - on the w810, you just held a button down for three seconds. It's very big & clunky. There are no ring tones that just 'ring' - there were more the least offensive ringtone sounds like an advert for the Brazilian tourist board. Ringtone choices about 3 Sony Ericsson generations ago. The reception is quite erratic.

I know I am probably a freak in the world of mobile phones, but I mostly use my phone for ringing people up & texting them, & running my diary. I've got no idea what the camera's like. The Walkman feature is so counterintuitive, I just couldn't be bothered.

Judging by the reviews of the other Sony's, it seems they've opted to split up their phones - a radio-less slim one with keys so small you can't use it; a feature-packed brick, that's difficult to set to silent. I'd have been happiest with a straight replacement for my life-expired w810. :- (

Progress, eh?

This is a poor, cumbersome & annoying phone. I really don't like it at all.

It has got lots of features, but these are far out-weighed by its terrible usability.

It is a slide phone, but boy does it not slide with ease. The choice of ringtones & other tones is extremely poor, with only about 6 choices, which is a joke! Thing is, being a so-called top-of-the-range phone, they want you to go online & download ringtones.

Games are non-existent too. Again, they give you a 45 sec trail & if you like it, have to download it at extra cost.

Ergonomically speaking, the design is very poor & it's pretty heavy in comparison with other slide phones. I moved from Nokia on an upgrade & very much regret it.

Worst thing about this phone is that despite having full reception, it cuts out on calls frequently. Some of the Menus items are not intuitive.

The Walkman feature is good, but again, not intuitive to navigate.

Texting is a nightmare, with keys for spacing, symbols like? @ etc. Not in the same place as most other phones.

I implore you, if you have any sense, don't buy this phone despite what may seem its attractions.

Can't wait till next Christmas when I am due my next upgrade.

Had this phone for about 6 months now got it as an upgrade from Orange.

Have to say the only problem I have had with it I caused myself by dropping it when drunk & it scratched the screen & the memory card popped out but that was it, popped the memory card back in fine & the phone works perfectly still. Haven't had any of the problems that other people have spoken about e.g. Crashing or just turning itself off, the camera isn't great but is OK & if you like your phone to be musical then this is just fantastic. Also the menus are easy to use but I was used to this as I have had Sonys for about 4 or 5 years now. I suppose nowadays there are some nice new phones out e.g. W880i & Nokia N73 but not a lot combine what this phone has, excellent music facilities & a decent camera that does have a flash.

All in all this is a very nice phone & durability wise can't fault it has been through the wars but still works perfectly.

As for looks I got this as soon as it came out & everyone was amazed, about 6 people I know went & got one themselves.

This is an excellent phone, apart from the following things:

1. The keylock is rubbish, mine is forever unlocking itself in my pocket or bag.

2. Following on from 1. Above, the thing keeps connecting itself to the Internet from pocket or bag, costing a fortune. Very poor. To be fair, this is partly because of the t-mobile software - I think that must be how they make their money, from people connecting by accident.

3. After just 3 months, mine has now developed a fault - whenever I try to write a text message, the thing just switches itself off. & no, it's never been bumped, dropped, had extreme weather conditions or temperatures. One minute it was fine, the next, done-for.

What a crock.

There isn't an option here to rate it on quality/durability, otherwise I'd give it a rather poor show.

In terms of usability, I did not find any problems with it. Coming from a Nokia phone, I thought I would be disappointed, as everybody suggests there is nothing like Nokia. Well, I think this phone is equal & maybe even better than the Nokia's in usability terms.

The phone design is very nice, although I wish it was a bit thinner, but I assume you couldn't have so many features in a thinner phone.

Apart from a disastrous start by Vodafone who had previously been marvelous, I really like my new phone. I have a really thick question though - if someone sends you a number by text - how can you cut & paste it from the message into your address book? It was so easy on my old Samsung & this is so hi-tec I can't believe it's not possible.

Only criticism is that the picture quality on the camera is not great - even a portrait is fuzzy (& no it's not me! ). Apart from that I would recommend it to anyone!

Previously had various pda type phones but in the end I use my phone for phone calls & a bit of web browsing. So the 850i with its Walkman feature & respectable camera really does the job & so far seems pretty robust despite having the slider. The only thing I don't use on the phone is the onboard web browser, I use opera mini instead my better. Camera takes very reasonable snaps, by no means a fully featured camera. The Walkman is great. But Sony's decision not to support MACs is very silly. I know they make PCs so perhaps they think they shouldn't support the competition but a free phone is not going to ever influence which computer I buy.

Great handset, had mine for several months after moving over from a Samsung d500 (which I loved). Not as fun to use as the Samsung but superior features - the music playing software & Sony interface is generally a lot more flexible with many more options. Battery life as with all other Sony Ericsson's is superior to all other manufacturers on the market & with a mobile device this should be a main consideration for the user. My only complaint is that the slide is not fully active - cannot end calls with it but apart from that the daddy of consumer phones right now (if you don't need the camera of the k800).

The equivalent Nokia (n73) is riddled with software issues (it is extremely slow & can be easily corrupted - like pretty much all the new nokias) & has a very poor battery life in comparison. Sony Ericsson is the pros choice unless you want a slimmer fun phone & in that case check out the Samsung z720.

Any bad reviews are incorrect, because this phone is awesome the music player is just as good or even better than an ipod the games you get with it are pretty average but you can download java games onto it anyway.

The 2MP camera is really clear & has panorama mode so that you can take 3 pictures side by side & the phone stitches them together & you end up getting a wide panoramic shot that if you do it right will look awesome.

This phone is awesome & I recommend it to everyone.

Excellent phone, had it for nearly a week now & keep finding new features, miles better than the Samsung D900 that I sent back due to screen problems, loads more features. The buttons are easy to use, despite a previous review that stated that they were so hard to press that they hurt the fingers! The only slight niggle that I have with this phone is the software supplied does not load the album art onto the phone (a big selling point) & looking around the Internet I am not the only one. With a little perseverance however this has been solved by using itunes software & opening up the phone as the generic F drive & simply dragging & dropping the required albums from itunes to the phone.

This I think is a great phone & I don't know why everyone is saying it isn't. This is Sony Ericssons first slide phone made & they have made a good one! Although the slide is a little wobbly but apart from that it is fine. I have about 150 tracks on my memory stick at the moment & I have about 3/4 of the memory left. I have found the button which takes you to the Walkman very handy so you don't have to go through everything every time that you want to listen to music.

I had a w810i before it was a great phone, but got tried of the candy bar design so after 3 months I upgraded to w850i. Indeed it was a good choice, upgraded Walkman version, all features are usable & off course I loved the slide design. I will keep this phone for a long time because it fits all my needs of a phone. I recommend it to everybody. Motorola, Nokia, Siemens, LG, Alcatel, Samsung & XDA smart phones all rubbish (especially Nokia 5300 don't compare it to w850i, NO MATCH)! Sony Ericsson simply amazing!

It seems to me that the people who have migrated from Nokia to S E all seem to give bad reviews & I am certainly no exception. I myself was a Nokia buff but I got a K750i given as a company phone, quite a while back now & I hated it.

It took a couple of weeks to get used to it but as time went by I started to love the phone. Then I left the company & the phone had to go back. So when I was due for an upgrade on my own phone which was a Nokia 6230 I got the Sony Ericsson w800i & I have to say I was extremely impressed, so impressed with Sony Ericsson that I got my daughter a w800i & now I am due for an upgrade & the w850i has been ordered & I can't wait for it to come.

So the moral of the story is, all you hardened Nokia users, give Sony Ericsson a chance & you will convert.

I've had this phone for quite a while now, & I am thoroughly impressed with it. It seems to me that the people giving the W850 bad reviews are possibly impatient people who don't even bother trying to get to know the Sony Ericsson interface. My recommendation if you've never used a Sony Ericsson before: take some time to get to know it before you judge it.

Of course, that's not to say the phone doesn't have any faults. The main thing that gets to me is the size & shape of the navigation keys - they're just too damn small. When I try to navigate with them, I often end up pushing the buttons next to them. & there's the fact that it doesn't really have a flash. There's the option of turning the light on when you take a picture, but if you enable the option, the light just always stays on, instead of a camera flash. Thirdly, the PC suit is great for transferring music, but its rubbish in all other respects.

All that said, they don't really get to me much - I rarely use the camera, & how often do you need to do stuff with your PC other then to transfer music? I guarantee you'll absolutely love this phone if you just took the time to get to know the designs.

Feels absolutely lovely to hold & use. A very positive slide action. Seems very well engineered.

The diary & contacts integrate perfectly with Microsoft Outlook.

I changed from a BlackBerry 7100 to an XDA mini, but found the XDA far too bulky.

Tried a D&G V3i but the contacts & diary do not integrate at all well.

My daughter got an 850i & I was so impressed I got one for myself.

I would give 100% score for usability if there was a QWERTY keyboard, it's the only thing that I miss from the XDA mini & BlackBerry 7100 because I change diary appointments a lot when away from the PC, & send a lot of text messages. Still, the phone's so much smaller & far nicer to hold.

The music facility is a bonus. Just a shame I bought myself an iPod for Christmas!

This phone does my head in.

To begin, if you have it on pay as you go, its sooo expensive. The e900 is way cheaper, & it is way better. Why bother spending 300 pounds on something that isn't that great. The keypad is so annoying. The up & down dots hurt your fingers when using. The phone itself isn't very slim & it has a bulky feeling. The menu is quite complicated. If you want a slide phone, with new touch button technology, a slim glossy design, a 2 mega pixel camera, video, MP3 player, & an external memory card slot, etc. Buy the e900. It's not worth spending 100-200 pounds more on a more rubbishy phone.

I got this phone as a free upgrade from 3. This is a great phone. People can get very attached to their phone & go on about it can do but with the W850i the attachment that I to it is pure satisfaction of having a great phone.

The screen is clear & detailed. The menus design are alright & it is very easy & quickly to navigate through them. I really like the phone design. Very slick. There are no buttons with the green & red phone so it doesn't look like a phone. The front camera has a very small lens which is very neatly incorporated with the ear-speaker. I have the black version so the whole phone looks sophisticated.

I actually like that the phone does not terminate the call when you slide down. You slide up to quickly reach the person in contacts & then once it is calling you can slide it down & make it really compact holding without affecting your call or listening to music.

The contact list shows the number automatically as you scroll through your list so that you don't have to press another key to view it.

I don't use the phone to take pictures & video but I know that it is there & I don't expect for them to be any better than a proper digital camera or camcorder. So I am not disappointed with the 2MP camera.

The battery last over 4 days although I was not speaking constantly.

Overall, this is the best phone I have ever had & very satisfied with it.

On the face of it, it's a good phone, the slider, the Walkman, the memory & the design, but don't be fooled. Sony's into un-chartered territory with a slider, with this being the 1st they've done (I think). & well, it shows!

The slider function seems clunky, opening the slider accepts the call but closing it doesn't end it? Opening the slider unlocks the phone but closing it only locks the phone if all applications are closed.

The first one Vodafone sent me (on the day it came out), the light didn't work, so had to get it changed. & today, only a month or 2 later, it seems to be rejecting all memory cards. & that's annoying especially as I use it as a MP3 player when I am commuting (mainly) & when I went to use it today walking to the station, it rejected the memory card inside & only recognises the internal memory, although it worked fine the day before.

Going to have a play now, & if I can't fix it I think I am going to the W950i, looks good & better reviews than this.

Only time will see, have fun!

I am not going to give much in the way of a review because there's not a lot to talk about. If you want a music player buy an ipod if you want a phone don't buy this cheap excuse from Sony Ericsson. I recently upgraded & ordered one of these toy phones, I had it for 1 hour & phoned 3 to come & collect & replace with an N73. Best thing I have done! As soon as you hold the Sony Ericsson in your hand it feels sub standard. The buttons are fiddly, the menu is awkward & the sliding mechanism doesn't close any open operations. The screen is too small & there are no dedicated call/End call buttons. A horrible phone with one redeeming feature, it's easily destroyed!

This is a good phone but it isn't great. I previously owned a K750i which, again was a really good phone bar the progressively unresponsive joystick (which is why I steered clear of the K800). The Walkman features on the 850 are nice- speaker is very good, better I think than the 750. I like the design too. Looks more modern than the 750.

A couple of frustrations though:
Camera is surprisingly not as good as the 750 or w800i. It has no auto focus & the light/flash is singular as opposed to the very bright one on the 750/800. Pics on the 750 were very good due to these features & I can't understand why a 2 year old phone takes better pics than this brand new one!

As others have mentioned, it is a niggle that a call can be answered by sliding up, but not terminated by sliding down. Also, the top line of buttons are quite close to the bottom of the slider which can make it prone to clumsiness when texting.

A feature on the 750 I liked was a separate play/pause button on the side of the phone. This enabled you to pause a song if the key lock was on- also the volume/zoom control on the 750 enabled you to skip either way when listening to music, again even with the keypad lock on. There is no function for this on the 850, so far as I can see you have to unlock the keypad in order to use Walkman controls.

Lastly, the 750 was great in that whilst key locked, you could press any button & the screen would backlight to about 50% so as to see the time/date. When attempting this on the 850 the screen does not light enough to see these- you have to unlock it which is annoying.

Oops sorry, there is one more thing. When using the slider there is a helpful little bar on the front for your thumb which is handy when sliding down. However, when using this in the up motion, I often accidentally press the Orange bar operating the Walkman feature & lighting up the phone Orange. Another thing that takes a few seconds to cancel.

All this said & done it has good all round features & is a bit different. In light that I previously had a 750i, maybe is should have gone with its successor the 800i, however, like I said I just don't trust those joysticks anymore!

I think this phone is really good does everything you can ask for. Only bad thing I would say about it is I wish when you are on say "messages" but then you decide not to & you shut your phone it doesn't go back to the normal screen & another thing is wish it had better games "Deal or no deal ha ha" but to be honest these aren't big issues.

Had mine 10 mins, called Orange & told them to collect it. Pile of junk. For a start it has no answer or reject call dedicated buttons. I tried to use it, got put through to my mates answer phone. I tried to hang-up but pressed the wrong button which put me into a menu which I couldn't get out of, & as a result couldn't drop the call until I had. Wastes of time, menus are useless. Only a 2MP camera, most Nokia's are 3 or more. It will teach me to stray from Nokia!

Where do I start with this piece of grrrrrrr.

My main gripe with this phone is the slide isn't active. Something like this you'd think you could get over, but the rest of the thing is so badly designed as well. The "End Call" soft key is the same as the menu key, so, if like me you press the key a few times 'just to be sure' you find yourself in the menu, then you slide the phone closed & put it in your pocket, at which point your change & keys are at liberty to surf the Internet, phone friends, take pictures or play the MP3 player. All because simply sliding the phone shut doesn't lock the phone unless you happen to be on the front screen.

OK you say you could press & hold the tiny little back button to get to the front screen, & I say you're right. But why should I? Closing something usually signifies you don't want to use it any more, why go through the process of pressing an awkward 5mm diameter button before you close the thing.

As a phone it's quite good. Sound quality is good & battery life, the menu's are easy to use just not very stylish, but the camera is poor unless the light is perfect & if you want an MP3 player then you'll get an iPod not a phone.

Oh & one more thing, if the space key when you're texting was on '0' instead of '#' then you wouldn't need a double jointed thumb & using the '*' key would be better for choosing words from the dictionary then the up down buttons.

All in all buy a Nokia. I've made the mistake of getting Sony Ericsson before & I won't be doing it again.

Bit big & bulky, apart from that it's a great phone. Shame the camera wasn't a 3MP. But that's just me being fussy.

Blooming heavy though!

Anyway - decent enough 'jack of all trades', fun phone for those who want a new gadget.

People say that this phone is really good, but the sound & the flashing lights to the rhythm of the music is awesome! I am going to get this phone for x-mas. First I wanted the K610i but soon I found out how bad it was & choose this one. But I suggest this phone to everyone that loves cool Walkman phones!

Pretty cool phone, camera quality is pretty good, & allows you to zoom if you switch the shooting modes. MP3 player sounds really good, loud & crystal clear, loving the stylish design & all the extra features, the only bad thing about this phone, which still annoys me, is the fact that you can't end the call by sliding the phone down! You can do this with the oldest of slide phones so why not this one! Apart from this, phone is amazing!

Great phone although a bit bigger than my last one (Samsung D600). It has all the gadgets & gizmos on it & is really good for MP3's. I found the 2meg pix still camera to be good quality as well but the video function is pretty average. Nice phone to use but feels a bit clumsy at times when texting. The slide on mine feels solid but have heard some of them may be a bit flimsy & wobbly. Terrific memory capacity too & the supplied 1 gig memory card is great for all your music & vids. All in all a solid, useable phone with plenty of extra features for being down the pub!

I want to respond to the folks that are disappointed at the fact the phone does not hang up when the slider closes. I have had this phone for 2 weeks & I like this. Why would I want to have to keep the phone opened after dialing a number. I find that I talk with the phone closed more often than not. Also, sometimes I find it necessary to open the slider during a conversation to use the number pad & this is no problem. When I am finished, I close it without a problem. Not sure why people think this is bad. You use the end call button when the phone is closed, why is it a problem when the phone is open?

OK, definitely minor irritation I've had is when loading music from the computer. The phone sometimes asks to select normal vs. flight mode when you plug is USB cable & sometimes asks for the pin & soft re-boots. Then everything works fine.

The phone is great. Everything is so easy to use & unlike Nokia, it does not seem to crash when you use its functions. Wouldn't have any other phone at this time.

Buy it! You will like it.

Great phone- definitely recommend it! let down on: Camera great apart from you cant zoom on it you can only zoom on the video- but does great shots if your near the object. Phone lock a bit confusing but I've got used to it when you slid it down it locks. & the light goes off quite quickly- saving energy I suppose but can be a bit annoying. The layout the keys maybe could be a bit further apart, but I have small fingers so I have no problems. I have had this phone for just over 1 week, no problems yet. Its got pretty much everything you could want: 3G- video calling, games, radio, Walkman, camera- with light & flash, no autofocus or zoom, video, alarm, calendar, notes, timer/stopwatch, light- it will flash sos for you if you wish. I give this phone 5 stars.

I originally took out the Samsung D900 on contract but I had returned it to swap it for this by the next day! Although the D900 has a more powerful camera, the W850i takes better photos! There are so many features on this phone that it can seem daunting-especially if you hate reading instruction booklets like me. However, it is actually quite straight forward. One thing annoys me about it; you can't end a call by sliding the phone shut although you can answer by sliding open. Found this out the hard way, when after 5 minutes of thinking I ended an answering machine message I noticed the call timer still counting. Can see this leading to expensive bills...

Having always had Nokia's, I was a Sony 'virgin' when I got my K800i, but was completely won over. I progressed to the w800i & absolutely loved it....still do. So I couldn't wait for the w850i to come out, but I have to say I'm very disappointed. Can't fault the features, they're wicked. However I find the small round navigation keys on the front of the phone a nightmare to press! & the Walkman...what a complicated navigation system compared to the w800i! I've also had numerous software/technical problems. Returned one phone as the earpiece stopped working in the first week...callers could hear me, but I couldn't hear them. The second phone, which I still have, started overheating & I could barely hold it. Now it's saying my memory's full when I press the Walkman button, then it tells me there are no tracks....now, I know I've not filled all the 1gb in 8 days, & I know there were 2 albums on the phone this morning when I was walking to work! I really don't know what to do...keep it or take it back & stick with my trusted w800i. I have a feeling all these problems are 3G related. I had a Nokia N70 & took that back after 1 week with software/technical faults.

I purchased this phone due to looks, & was amazed at how much I missed the Sony Ericsson platform, have an old K700i, but since then have gone through a rubbish Moto razor, & an amazing Nokia N93, but felt I needed a small phone again. I love the Walkman interface, one button push to activate, although it can get in the way when playing some of the games like Juiced. Sound quality for the MP3'is is better than any other music/mobile phone I have seen or had, might be because of the Sony headphones that come supplied but even in speakerphone its better than my N93! Excellent user interface, themes are always fun to download & change whenever, gives the phone a new look. Camera feature is on par with other phones in price range, although the quality of Sony Ericsson's have always amazed me compared to other comparable resolution camera/phones. Sony Ericsson's tend to be brighter & crisper in the same lighting conditions. One thing I wish it had is built in wifi, there is something about finding a hot-spot & then surfing the net free of charge on your cell...priceless : ) Overall phone is very impressive, way 2 go 2 Sony Ericsson for another amazing mobile phone.

I recently bought this phone, & am loving it! The last phone I had was the Nokia 6230i, & although this was a great phone, it comes nowhere near the W850i! The sound quality is fantastic, the games are amazingly addictive. It is a high quality phone, & everyday I am amazed by some new feature I've discovered! I would recommend this phone to anyone who likes their music, as you can download songs & listen to the radio. The coverage with 3 is also fantastic - with a great bundle to match. Although there are phones available with better cameras, this one is more than enough for me. 2 megapixel & lots of features to match. Including photos in black & white & sepia.

Having just had a free W850i upgrade from my 'phone provider, I must say I have been a little disappointed having moved from a Nokia 6260 clamshell phone. I find the user interface much clunkier in the Sony Ericson. but the most irritating aspect of the phone for me is that there is no support with Apple Mac isync - probably due to the running battles between Sony & Apple on there music platform. I have now had to load all the bundled software onto my PC rather than using my preferred Apple ibook. Unfortunately the user loses out again due to their petty feuds. If I had realised sooner I would have probably gone for another Nokia, which will support isync.

When I first saw the phone I wasn't that taken back by it's design, I thought it was quite ugly in fact, & was looking at getting the K800i, although after seeing the phone off it's promotional stand, next to all the other phones I saw it & thought it looked a lot better.

This is my third Sony Ericsson phone, My last one was the W800i & before that some low-end one... which I got given to me after my Samsung had broken - it turned out to be better than the E800 - now I'm in love with Sony Ericsson & don't think I'll be changing to anyone else anytime soon.

I've now taken out a contract with 3 for the W850i, which is only £15 a month for 6 months with 2000 free texts, 600 call mins, 50 video mins, 50 picture/video messages... with free Sony Ericsson speakers, & as it's on 3, & my friend is also on 3 we both get £30 credited to our bill for referring me - so I'm going to have fun testing it out!

My advice to anyone - Sony Ericsson on 3! Best combination!

Doesn't feel expensive as there is an exact replica W830i which is cheaper (yet to be released) & looks exactly the same. Only thing I like is the A2DP audio streaming profile. But I'll have to compensate autofocus, more money & won't get any attraction as well!

Hi, just been on the phone to Vodafone today about an upgrade. The release date for this model is 10th October 2006. They are also releasing the W950i on the same date. But they couldn't give me even a gestimate for the price on either models. Any body have any clues. These are seriously smart phones. Pity about the lack of camera on the W950i.

I really can't wait until this phone is available. It's perfect. Great design & great features, & it has flashing lights. What more could you want from a mobile. Nothing, the only thing I would ask for is changeable fascias, which doesn't even matter anyway.

Roll on October...

At last Sony Ericsson have designed a slide phone that not only comes in Black but also in sleek White. I seen this phone in the Da Vinci code film & from then on I couldn't wait to get my hands on it I cant believe how long it is taking to come out & cant believe it didn't come the sale time as the film coz Sony would have made a fortune but I'm sure it will be worth the wait I currently have the W800i but am really sick of looking at the horrible orange colour on it. Who at Sony choose that colour?? I am mobile mad & have had loads of different kinds of phones but would have to say that Sony Ericsson is the best. Hopefully it will be out earlier than then end of Sept.

Hello, Here in Belgium we are still waiting for this beauty to come out. I desperately wait already for a few months new. The latest news concerning release here is end of August / September. Currently I got the W800i which is also a devastating phone - the only problem I have is that the camera shutter always opens when I take the phone out of my pants - this is because the toddles slide away.

So I hope to be one of the first to have a brand new W850i slider in my possession in Belgium.

Bye all. Nico

I'm very much excited to get my hands on the new W850i! I've been reserving my money to upgrade to a better mobile phone than what I have presently. You see, in the Philippines, we get to have the new mobile phone models launched here earlier than other countries such as the US. It's also very easy to get a hands-on test of different mobile phone brands/models in stores (such as The Hub of Globe Telecom, Sony Ericsson, Siemens, & Motorola) before purchasing. I've waited more than two years in search of a do-it-all, against-it-all mobile phone. I've been clinging to my jack-of-all-trades siemens M65 because I believe it has got the best balance of advantages & disadvantages. I was hoping that this year, one of the mobile phone giants would release a 3G camphone-musicphone-weather resistant phone. But I guess nobody wants to take on such challenge to build one. So here comes the SE W850i. It's got the Walkman badge & it will surely deliver to the expectations of those who have tried & tested the likes of the W800i & other Walkman phones. It's got all the goods that we raved about in its W800i cousin: 2-Megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom, Walkman player, flightmode, super bright white-LED light, expandable memory via MemoryStick Pro Duo, excellent sound, MegaBase, extra long battery life, intuitive user interface, enjoyable personalization by the use of various themes, fun games (built-in & downloaded), cutting edge technology & well thought of design & ergonomics. Whew! The W850i has all that! And more! It's got 3G, videocall, TrackID, a more brilliant, larger & higher-density display, & now we can have it in either sexy color: black or white. It's very compact--almost the same dimensions as the W800i, very ergonomic because the keypad tucks away when you're not using it, & SE finally learned that a twisting or rotating form factor doesn't work (ex: S700i, W900i).

I've got only two things that I see lacking in this marvelous mobile phone: weather-resistance & a joystick. I don't know if being water-resistant, dust-resistant & shock-resistant pose a huge difference in the production cost or a challenge in the production process or a difficulty in finding a proper market niche, but it wouldn't have hurt to see a superior phone such as this to be as tough & robust as it is sexy & hi-tech. About the absence of a joystick, I understand that music players do not usually employ this menu control device, but it does a great job in the W800i. I think a joystick is better in being user-friendly than the fout-way control pad because all you do is flick it to either of the four directions & press it to choose the option rather than make larger finger movements when you use a four-way pad or four navigation buttons.

So will I get this mobile as my next do-it-all gadget? Most likely, as long as no flaws can make me sacrifice its innumerable positive features.

Can't rate this phone fairly as I haven't seen it or got it yet but would like to share my opinion on the W850i. This is the first walkman phone that I have been interested in as it looks so simple & useable. I know there is a few walkman phones on the market at present by they have not got the same design as the W850i, it is the most desirable phone out of the bunch. I love the slide opening & would have the phone in black. The walkman music player feature by Sony Ericsson has had such positive reports & the 2.0 music player should totally blow me away. The music features are packed into this phone with a FM radio with RDS feed back & MP3, ACC & polyphonic music ringing tones. Brilliant spec & I can't wait to get my hands on this phone.
