Don't listen to anyone that tells you this phone is bad, it's quite the opposite, my phones gone through so much & it's lasted about a year, never broken, doesn't freeze. It's virtually indestructible. The slides perfect.

I had the phone for 6 months. Started off great.
All the features are good & its easy to use. Design is great & the Walkman is fantastic. It holds over 1000 songs which is great, as I use it mainly for the Walkman. Unfortunately the buttons on the right hand side have STOPPED FUNCTIONING, & the phone began to freeze while texting! & I am not best pleased. Am sending it back for testing.
But other than that its a great phone!

Four words, don't buy on t-mobile.
The phone is OK, features are pretty bad but this is made up for by the excellent Walkman. I have a close to full 4GB memory card & I love the music side of the phone.
Now the bad stuff:
- Slide is stiff & jams sometimes.
- Games are seriously bad.
- FM radio picks up roughly 3 radio stations.
On T-mobile:
- Texts would often not come through, then all come at once.
- I would often end up with 7 minute calls turning up on my bill which I had not made, very expensive.
- I was on 40p a minute, so you might be thinking aha the texts will be extremely cheap then. Wrong. They are 3p, to t-moile. 10p anywhere else. So 6 texts a day & a 1 minute call which is about my average, costs me £1.
Phone: decent.
T-mobile mates rates may as well go & burn your money.

I got my W850i on contract in December 2006 because I wanted a phone with MP3 playback that I could upload from my computer. That was the main reason for getting it. I really liked the Walkman, instant access, button on the front & its slide up key cover design. It has performed faultlessly since I've had it.
BUT, it does have a few niggling flaws which have prompted me to upgrade to a Nokia N81.
Predictive Text
When using the predictive text, every time it comes across a word it doesn't know, it displays a little box with as many as 7 or 8 possible words in it. You have to scroll down the list, select the required word & enter it into the sentence. All well & good, until the next time you want to use the same word. That's when you discover that the W850i doesn't learn words & you have to use the scroll box method again & again. Also, if you want symbols, you have to use the options not, as with the N81, the star or 1 keys. I lost patience with it & went back to multi-tap.
Cameras
The rear camera gets dirty really easily & requires constant cleaning as does the front Video call camera. At 2 Megapixels it should take fairly good pictures but it doesn't. My new N81 also has 2 Megapixels & the picture quality is far superior. & finally, not just a niggle but a real complaint.
Music Transfer
Once you've convinced the software that you really & truly have connected the phone to the computer & the on screen box stops reading 'No device found' whilst the phone continually turns itself off & then on again & repeatedly asks for the pin & lock codes you may now transfer 'files' into the phone. I say files not tracks because you cannot transfer tracks. There is no facility that allows the use of your media player, you can only use the file names. So, if the file name is a web address or is misnamed then that's what you have to search for, which, for me, is a real pain in the neck & a source of severe frustration & more than a little swearing. You can't transfer entire Albums with the W850i unlike the N81 which, by comparison, is a pleasure to use & in my opinion beats the W850i hands down.
Don't get me wrong though. The W850i is a good phone despite the flaws. It's easy to use, has a good menu system & the music player is great (once you've managed to upload it), although it sounds better through the headphones than the tinny mono speaker on the back.
Even so, as soon as I could upgrade, I did & with no regrets. It will soon have a new home with my Best Mate who doesn't own a computer, isn't interested in the camera & only texts using multi tap so I am giving it to him.

I LOVE THIS PHONE! I got it in August 2007 which was a good 10 months after it was first release & it was still the best in the market for me!
The music quality is great & the games are good. It's fun to play around with & texting is easy
I am BIG with phones as I usually have about 5 phones a year just because I can afford it but I kept this phone until yesterday when it got stolen, miss it so much can't believe it.
I don't understand all the reviews about it going on in your pocket or saying you can't play games because if the Walkman button? I never had these problems & either has anybody I know LOL.
Basically this is one of the best phones around but now I fancy a bit of a change.
I am going to get either the Samsung F700 or F490 I don't know which one is better but I am going go to the shop & see.

Best phone I have ever had. I have used it for 18 months now & never had a single problem. The issue I have with this phone is that I am now due an upgrade & I can't find one to measure up. All the new phones seem riddled with problems & I don't really want to change it. I think I might get my upgrade & keep it in the box until my w850 dies (not that its showing any signs of doing that in the near future). I moved away from Nokia's for this phone & I really don't want to go back.

Had this phone for 18 months & never missed a beat.
Dropped a few times, abused on the bike & in bad weather & it's still working as new. Even the battery last more o less as it was new.
Only downside, it's a bit thick. Other than that great phone.

Well, I am sorry to say, even though it is packed with features, I have found this phone to be the most annoying phone I have ever owned.
If you're male, then there is a good chance that you will keep your phone in your pocket. This is a big mistake. The phone doesn't always lock properly anyhow, but when it's in your pocket, the phone can make a call, text someone, surf the net or start playing MP3's which is most bizarre. For these reasons, I personally despise this phone.
However, my wife also owned this phone & she used to enjoy playing games & those clever people at Sony Ericsson decided to put the Walkman feature button just above the up button on the control pad. Playing games is a near impossibility without inadvertently switching on the Walkman.
Overall, I am glad I've got shot of it.

I got this phone because at the time (January 2007) it was the number one selling online phone. I was a bit nervy switching from Nokia but the w850i has not disappointed. It's practical, functional & intuitive. I haven't really used it for the Walkman but its decent enough. The camera is rubbish but again that doesn't bother me. Its things such as tasks, notes, speaker phone, memory & the ease of use, which does it for me.
The down side is that is bulky. The most annoying thing is that it can slide up & down in your pocket which automatically disables the lock. I have phoned people, gone on the net & even sent a blank text without releasing!
I think Sony Ericsson have decent phones, a real all rounder. I would like to stick with them if they had a phone which was lighter (the k800i is my work phone & is brilliant).

I have had this phone for 18 months & it's the best phone I ever had. Sure, it's a bit chunky, but at least you know you've got it in your pocket. The MP3 Walkman is the best feature, also the radio comes in very handy.
The only bad thing about it is (as with previous Sony's) after some time of owning, the applications & games have been deleted from the phone, even the ones I could not delete myself! It's never stuck or had many problems with the battery life, or turning itself off (well maybe a couple of times).
I am only sorry that I can no longer get this phone on my contract, as I have to upgrade to a W880i, but it's hideous in gold, so am sending this back. Sony's are best for style, but sometimes a little fiddly to use.

A noble device that caters for a variety of communicative needs (telephony, short messaging service, electronic mail) with various enhancements for entertainment (it doubles as a frequency modulated radio receiver, allows the user to play java games, browse the world wide web Internet service, listen to records in MP3 mode & make & view both pornographic & non-pornographic video clips & still images). All in all, a splendid comms & entertainment package, especially for the young gent who may enjoy carrying mucky electronic pictures around in his pocket.

After commenting before on the 28th July 2007. I am going to say that I am sorry. I have had this phone now for nearly a year & to be honest it was a good phone. Until recently every time I open the phone it goes white & freezes on me! So to unfreeze it I have to take out the battery & then the memory card & then put it all back together again.
Every time I go to text somebody, the picture starts to slowly move across the screen & then white lines will appear, & it will slowly start to freeze & then it will, go white again completely.
I have sent my phone off once to be fixed & they said it would take about a week to fix but it took 3. After having this phone & it being one of the best phones I have ever had & then going & breaking on me several times it has given me no other choice but to buy a different phone. However many people have said that when the phone was in their pocket it used to ring people, mine has never done that yet!
So if you are looking for a good phone please do not but this phone, as it is unreliable & could freeze on you at any minute.

The only phone that has lasted a whole 18 months without being broken once. It isn't the greatest looking phone, very chunky & plastic. Although does have very handy shortcuts with the push of a button. The Walkman shortcut button for instance is great. The buttons are a decent size, not to small & a good shape. Unlike some of the later Walkman phones. All in all one, if not the, best Sony Ericsson Walkman phones.

I got this phone at the end of 2006. I'd had it for a week until the camera just stopped working. Then buttons stopped working on my replacement. The phone itself doesn't seem trouble free lots of minor faults.
However, the design of the phone looks amazing & it has all the features you could want.
Has convinced me to stay with the Sony Ericsson brand but not with the push up model as I have had one problem too many!

This phone worked perfectly for 10 months & then started to freeze, itself off until eventually it didn't turn on. The software available to download from the Sony Ericsson website did not help either. After sending my phone off to be fixed (6 weeks ago) & being told it would take less than a week for the problem to be sorted out, it still has not been returned.
This is probably the worst phone I have ever bought & would not recommend it to anyone.

I have had this phone for over a year now on O2 & so far no problems. It's a good phone with a good memory. I have found I have filled up the memory & had to delete some things though. The only big problem I can really think of is that it is quite hard to slide up & down. So I found I swapped to a different handset the Samsung D600 because it's much easier to use & slide.

I have had my phone for 4 months & it has been back for repair 3 times because the camera keeps on turning out blurred pictures. I realised that was because the lens needs constant cleaning. This was not picked up by the repair centre & a new camera was installed each time, so I was told. A bad design fault, no wonder this phone was discontinued.

I have had this phone since October 2007 (the white version on Vodafone) & have not had one problem with it. It is such a sleek phone especially in white & gold only if all Sony Ericsson's Walkman phones were like this one, I prefer it by far to even the w910i which although has good music facilities, is rather ugly in my opinion so I got the k850i instead. This is one phone I intend to keep forever (along with my k850i), a lot of people have been trying to buy it off me but they don't stand a chance it is not going anywhere, outstanding phone.

I have had this phone for just under 1 year now & I have to say, it has done what I wanted it to do.
I bought this phone for the Walkman really. I didn't want an iPod, & my mates all said that Sony Ericsson's were the next best thing.
The music player is the best feature on the phone, but it really has everything you need. You have a 2MP camera, which is not great, but is good enough for what I need, a wide selection of games if you know where to download them from.
Another advantage for me was the Bluetooth, as infra-red is shockingly painful.
Overall, this is a cracking phone, & when I can, I will upgrade to the K850i for the better camera.

Unfortunately get to grips with it as it died within 24 hours of ownership!
The on & off (flimsy) push button on the top stopped working so I had to remove the battery to switch it off! The directional cursor control on the centre of the unit stopped working (couldn't scroll down) & the number 8 on the keypad also stopped working! I blame a rather cheap feeling pressure pad instead of a more robust joystick or toggle. The up button on the directional pad was too close to the centre enter key which meant that if I wasn't careful I was entering instead of pressing up or activating the Walkman feature, not good even with normal sized hands. A shame really as the phone looked & felt good whilst being packed with features. My first Sony Ericsson (Z200) was faultless, the next one (K510i) lasted 3 weeks before it had power on & off fluctuation problems & this one lasted.

Had this phone on an 18 month contract. Loved everything about it. So easy to use & has loads of memory. Solid phone without being too bulky. Battery life was about 3-4 days & I used it quite regularly. Foolishly upgraded to Nokia E65. Hate it. Usual Nokia plastic compared to Sony Ericsson. Stuck for 18 months. Definitely going back to Sony Ericsson. Miss it! Would recommend this phone to young & old alike.

I've had this phone just over a year now, it's seriously on the verge of death me thinks. It is surprisingly good considering how unreliable it can be though, the Walkman is incredible, games are great & the camera, though not the best quality, is good enough for a phone. The outer case is poor, mine is cracked & slightly loose, several of my friends are seeing this with their W850i's too.
Could anyone tell me what a good, significant upgrade from this phone is? I have an iPod Touch so music is of little importance, but I would like a good camera. I am tempted by the Viewty but after reading some reviews I am not so sure. Any advice?

Had this phone for 18 months, it's been a great phone. Love it.
Perfect for music lovers, just as good as the new w910i the only feature the w910i has over this phone is the shake control on the music which for me is no big deal but the w910i has no light or flash on the camera so it evens out. Thus is a simple phone to use with all the basics covered & extra's as well
The con I've had with this phone was that when I had a missed call it would bring up my Internet options & wipe the missed call, so I had no idea who called me, very strange. However in the end I just restored the phone back to its original factory setting & the problem went away.
All in all a great phone, & more than holds its own in the phone market against some of the newer phones which fail on the basics in my opinion.

I got this phone after having W810i for a year, which is a top phone to beat Walkman wise, first I would like to say that it's a great design, OK I admit it may be a bit bulky in the pocket compared to the W810i, but I think that it looks really smart compared to some of the phones on the market today, it has more or less everything you would want from a phone in terms of features like the 2.0 MP camera & the mint Walkman 2.0 media player, also it has the 3G features such as the video calls & such like.
The sound quality produced is really good & if you liked the W810i then you will most likely love this, OK there is one feature that should have been included but was booted out for an unknown reason & that was the auto focus feature on the camera, which would have made the camera in the same league as the W810i, but unfortunately isn't on that feature alone.
As soon as I saw somebody with this last year, I knew I had to have it, & know I finally have one I think I will keep it till it dies on me.
Overall it's a well designed phone, descent features but with some basic overlooked flaws.

I have had the Sony Ericsson W850i for 8 months now & I am fed up with it, yes it's a great music phone, yes the features work perfectly, yes, yes, yes but & a big but it is so dull & it is a big handset.
I was counting down the days until I could change the W850i. I was going to wait to the end of my contact, but I am happy to say I have set my old contact to the minimum payment plan & I am going to start a new contact with a fabulous new phone. I saw a great deal here on this site, really worth a look if you want a new phone or if you have the dull W850i like me.
Anyway I would say this is a good phone but DULL, if you are looking for something more impressive have a look at the new Sony Ericsson :).

I have had this phone for just over a year & have only found two bad points.
- Camera isn't good at night photos.
- It's slightly bulky.
Apart from that an excellent phone!

Got this phone for my son & he has had no real complaints, he loves it & says that it is the best phone he has had.
BUT this is his third one. On the first one the speaker packed up after 10 days, T Mobile replaced it straight away, then 2 months later the screen just went blank & you couldn't do anything. This was also replaced.

This phone is great I bought it at the weekend it's not got shake control like the w580i that my cousin has he thinks this phone is rubbish get w580i or the w850i their both good phones.

I have had this phone a long time, it's really good & has everything you need.
The only downfall is the way it looks! I think it's quite chunky, bland & boring. Nothing eye catching about it!
If this doesn't matter to you then go for it. I made the mistake of upgrading to a phone that does look good. But is rubbish & broke after a month, so now I am back to using the w850i anyway!

This was a class phone when I first got it. It is an extremely easy to use phone. I got it a year ago. The screen is a bit too small & I always push the little Walkman button by accident when I am trying to use other buttons. The wee silver bit on the back of the slide up bit is pointless & ruins the look of the phone a bit. I think they should have put the camera there because it looks rubbish on the back & can get very dirty. The music player is really good & so is the camera. I like the way the Orange light flashes with the beat of the music. Oh yeah & the memory is amazing. It's got 1GB phone memory & mine came with a free 2GB memory card. It's a great phone & I would recommend it to anyone that is looking for a phone to buy. Although I would say to get the new Walkman which is what I am upgrading mine to.

A wonderful mobile phone. It's perfect! The only drawback is the camera's colours. If you don't care about the camera, it's the best choice!

I have had this phone for 9 months now & I love it, but the only bad thing is that it can freeze & the camera on the W810i is better by far!

This phone is very poor. The features were good & it's easy to use but the amount of times I had to send it off to be repaired was insane. It must have been about 5 times in under a year & now Carphone Warehouse are refusing to repair it or give me a replacement. The twisting mechanism was one of the main design features that broke & the screen would die as well. Awful phone steer clear.

This phone is really good, the bad point is after a while the screen goes blank, & freezes. The battery as well after a while goes quick. It is totally reliable & predictive text is good.
All in all a good & reliable phone but needs to be updated with its software.

This mobile phone is great! I use every feature in it. It's an ideal phone for anyone loving music. The camera features are sufficient (much more efficient than expected from Walkman).

Hey I am thinking of getting this phone but there are a few things I would like to know first.
Can the memory stick hold lots of stuff? What do you get with the phone when you buy it? Is the camera good? How long can you record a video for?
Please can somebody answer my questions soon.

I had the Sony-E W850i for 7 months before I lost it.
I must say I have been impressed by this phone, my 1st Sony. Software nice & easy to use. MP3 player excellent, & considering it's a mobile phone the 2MP camera is actually excellent! Far from exceptional, but as someone else said it: or you want a camera-phone, or you want a Music player.
This phone never froze on me, never blocked, never erased my contacts. The battery life was good as I never thought about it. The design is original & modern. The casing never fell apart, but I've always taken care of it that must be why.
BUT! The MOST ANNOYING thing was. That when in my Jean's pocket, it VERY OFTEN managed to 'unlocked' himself & call friends, browse the Internet. That ultimately led to me loosing the D* phone as I took it out of the safest place on Earth: my pocket. So that's the 60% on usability. But all in all, a pretty, neat, reliable phone, I recommend! Especially if you like music, & at under £90 now. So want to stay with Sony & try the K800i now with 3.2 MP camera & very good reviews overall.

It Is the best phone ever, I got it for Christmas & it is the best phone in the world.
The only problem is that the screen scratches too easily, but apart from that it's awesome.
I love the MP3, WMA player awesome that I can play songs that are from the Internet or cds.
I totally recommend this phone 2 everyone :)

Best phone I have ever owned. I am a big fan of slide phones & this is the pick of the bunch. The slide is firm but not to sloppy.
The design is fresh & modern. It is a very mature looking phone, rather than these silly new phones which just look childish & immature.
It has a fantastic camera, & the front facing camera is very useful for video calls, although it cannot be accessed unless you are in a video call, which is a shame. It would be nice if it could be used as a mirror or something along those lines.
I would recommend this phone to a friend. It is awesome!

This phone is really good for music games, & if you want a phone ticking all the specifications. The bad points about this phone is the usability & screen which is very reflective & gets dirty quick, the battery life is also not that good & the ear plugs often get lost.
Over wise this phone is OK for a first time phone but can be improved.

Hey, This phone is really cool. I like it. I have had it for 10 months now. The only issue I have with it is that when I connect it to my computer using the USB cable & put in on Phone Mode, it doesn't get picked by my computer. However, if it is on File Mode, my computer does pick it up. I can't use it as a modem since that is only possible when it's on Phone Mode. Anyone know what's wrong?

I have had this phone now for 12 months at first it was a really good phone & had no problems with it but then after a while it started freezing & switching itself off. Now when I try to look at my photos it flicks through them like a slide show but won't stop until you turn the phone off. The back gets very dirty & the top were the two buttons are always falls off & now the silver bit on the back keeps falling off!
Some of my buttons cracked on the main keypad below the Walkman button & so I brought a new case but it's just happened again. The Walkman button gets in the way when trying to use the keypad as it is too close.
The music player is really good & the memory card slot has come in handy this is an ideal phone if you've into music but if your buying a phone for photos this is not the one you want.

Well, I know it has been released for a while in other countries. I am not sure how long it has been here in New Zealand. I am new here myself :) I have seen it in a shop & have had a play. I think it's cool, very sleek phone & very expensive too! I am getting one for Christmas, my first mobile from Sony Ericsson & I really hope that it will bring a good experience to me. Don't let me down Sony Ericsson. Merry Christmas everyone.

Think it is a good phone, have had for 9 months now, good camera for 2MP. Only problem I have had with mine is that every so often it freezes, when it does it duplicates my games & applications which also means that some of them won't play. Other than that alright phone.

Had this phone for a year & my son has also got one for a year they have been returned to Orange 3 times for earpiece, charging port (useless), buttons falling off the camera is no good gets too much dirt in it top half of the phone seems always lose & is! If it is in your pocket you bend down your either on texting Internet, phoning or your playing music totally useless! Worst phone I have had in 12 years & I have had 24 phones. Never getting a Sony Ericsson again.
