I've now had this phone for just under 2 years, which is a very long time for a Sony Ericsson. This phone is durable, easy to use & ever since I've bought it, I've never found a slide phone that is as good as it! Compared to phones that my friends have, that have come out recently, I've found that this can easily still compete with them. There have been no problems with this phone as far as I can see, it's has never broken, none of its features have died, & despite it being VERY scratched (thanks to being in my pocket all the time) it is still very much the same phone as it was when it was new. A must by, in my view! No other phone I could want!

BEST PHONE I have EVER HAD. Had it for just over a year now. Hasn't failed me once. It basically can do anything. Excellent all rounder. I don't know what others are talking about cracked keys, mine aren't even scratched a little bit & it's been everywhere.
Excellent sound quality & very durable.
TRUST ME & love it. GET THIS PHONE NOW! I GIVE IT 500 STARS I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT, NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. IT LOOKS REALLY GOOD AS WELL.

This phone is a good enough phone but is very prone to braking. Like another review I read, my phone fell off my bed & is now broke, the phone will turn on although the screen stays blank as if the phone is off. My phone also hits the Internet button which caused my bills to be very very high! Nice design, different from other phones but I would advise people not to buy this mobile as it is very prone to breakages! :( 5 out of 10.

I bought this phone in January 2008 & it is still working fine. I've had no problems with it at all. The battery life is still great & after being dropped several times it's still in good condition.
Brilliant phone, would recommend.

This phone has a nice screen display even better than mobiles with 16M display. Fast & easy to use. The only limitation is that cracks appears on keys (but they didn't broke out).

I bought this phone 3 years ago, it broke on me a few days ago. Now, I expected this phone to be virtually unbreakable, seeing as Sony Ericsson is a reliable make. But I was wrong. It fell off my bed onto carpeted flooring & decided that the screen would unplug itself & fall off, the plastic casing is poor & all the clips crack. I plugged the screen back in, but the little tabs on the side just gave way & now the screen won't hold. So after plugging the screen back in it worked fine, but I left it for a bit, & came back to it, & the screen was blinking at me, it wasn't showing a thing. I refuse to get a replacement because this phone has been such a letdown in the past, It freezes. The calling quality is utterly rubbish! & the design looks good, but like the w580 Walkman phone, the buttons crack, the interface of the phone just falls off. The features of the phone are amazing & good value for the money. The battery life lasts 12 hours once charged if your lucky, the game play & camera are really good (the only thing I'll miss about this phone) Web browsing was superb. But apart from these things the phone was basically poor standard & wasn't what I expected from my first ever Sony Ericsson phone after being with Samsung mobiles. To hopeful customers of this phone, consider these factors, because you're just going to end up in my position, utterly disappointed. & remember, it's not the phone manufacturer that's rubbish, because other phones from Sony Ericsson are amazing. But this phone is an utter letdown. Please refrain from buying it!

I bought this phone in December 2008, so over one & a half years ago. It is such a good phone, & so easy to use. I have started to notice a few cracks on my 3DEF button & hash button. It still works, just has a crack. There is also a few scratches on the paint work, but that's OK. I took my phone to the beach, & loads of sand got caught into it, so that was a bit annoying, but I did nearly bury it, so I assume that is going to happen, I wasn't bothered about that.
The camera's only 2mg, but I am not that bothered with it, & it does take quite good pictures. You can use some buttons as short cuts. Also, it tends to hit the Internet button, so my bills have been quite big because of it.
Sometimes it say Emergency Calls only, that annoys me as I have full bars. The battery life is amazing & can last for over a week.
The screen gets quite smeary, & I needed a micro chip thingy to add more memory, but it was only about 5 quid. The music player is good, & the games are pointless.
All in all, the design is a bit boring, but it comes in cool colours, the features are OK for such a cheap phone & the usability is v. Easy. It's a good phone & I would certainly recommend it, as it is very reliable. Love it! I have the option to change my phone now, but I don't think I will, I love this one.

I love this phone! It's amazing, it lasted me a year which is amazing considering most phones don't last me more than about 8 months.
I have since had the Nokia N95 which was good but just too big & I never was able to use all the features. Most recently I've had the Sony Ericsson k770 & I must admit I did chose it but I now hate it. There's nothing wrong with it, it just doesn't live up to the stunning standards of the s500i, I fell in love with it & am now buying it again (over Samsung Tocco Lite! ) It does break easily & the keys do crack but it's simply an amazing phone!

I had the S500i Flowers limited edition phone for my birthday in September last year. So I've had it for 8 months & it's been back to Carphone Warehouse twice for repairs.
The first time it had a complete overhaul, keys replaced, numbers replaced, new software, vibration mechanisms, audio, replacement slider & other things I can't remember.
The second time, it started again that I couldn't hear people on the other end of the phone, they couldn't hear me, it kept turning itself off.
I liked the look of this phone, it was different to anything else on the market, the phone is nice & small, the camera is rubbish only 2mpl, but not bad.
Overall, I would recommend buying this phone as I love Sony Ericsson's normally, but check what warranty you get with it (Carphone Warehouse is 2years), & if it's only a year & you don't normally upgrade after a year, then buy the extra warranty!

The phone is really neat actually I also have that phone although I have another Sony Ericsson phone, but if you compare it with my S500i I will still pick the W380i even though the S500i has a higher megapixel, but if you compare with the features the W380i is the best one, I tell you the BEST superb & it is also a stylish & multi tasking phone the BEST.

I would say overall the phone is really good. I had my phone for 2 years & the only problem was fingerprints & bad camera quality.
Other than that, I would recommend buying this phone. Do not slide your phone open & closed too fast or you will scratch the camera thingy. & when charging the phone, leave the phone slid up. If it remains down, the keys usually heat up too much & result in cracks after use!
ENJOY YOUR PHONE.

Hi, It's very stylish mobile phone, design is great but it's too poor, it hasn't any memory, & the keys are risky (about crack). But if you like design it's great but if you want to work, it's terrible (really).

I've had this phone for over a year & it has really let me down. The interference between phone calls in unbearable. In fact, at time I cannot hear what the person on the other end of the phone is saying. It's because of this that I am forced to buy a new phone. The keypad has also cracked but this isn't a major issue. It looks nice & its small but just because of the super poor sound quality, it's not worth the buy.

I absolutely LOVE this phone! I admit that my buttons have cracked horribly, & I did have to swap my phone 3 times in a couple of weeks when I first got it, but I've had it for 18 months now & have very few complaints. My space bar did stop working, but I assumed it had something to do with me dropping it a few times, but I easily got around that problem. I've never been able to access the Internet, but not a big issue for me. I would have liked the zoom function to work in the camera mode as well as the video, but again, as I have a digital camera, it really didn't cause too much of a problem.
All in all I would never hesitate to recommend this phone, it has served me well, & I shall really miss it when it eventually goes into retirement.

(: I love my Sony Ericsson, it's an amazing phone, really. It's so easy to use, the buttons are pretty easy to push, pretty much it's an all good average phone.
I drop it a lot & it always still works. Not perfectly, but pretty well. You can see some dents & scratches on my phone though.
Yes, my keys have cracked, but I am a texter, texting around, 3000 a month? My 1-9 keys have cracked along with my pound key. If you're a heavy texter, I warn you not to get this phone.
My music player is bipolar. The first few months I've had it it worked perfectly fine, but now sometimes it plays my songs. Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the volume is a little off, it's really strange.
A couple months ago, I used to be able to multitask very well. Being able to play a game, receive a text, & listen to music all at the same time on my phone.
Now, it doesn't seem to do that very well.
The speakerphone doesn't seem to be that loud either.
& the camera has decent quality, not very good, but its phone, so, what? & the video camera lets you record as long as you have the memory, that's great. (:
Overall a pretty good phone. Could use some improvements.

Have had this phone since September & have had no problems with it. Have dropped it many times & the screen did shatter once but bought a new screen of eBay for under £10 & replaced it myself very easily. No problems with the keypad cracking & my 2 year old is forever pressing the buttons.
All in all this is a great phone & it looks good.

What a heap of junk this phone is! My keys started cracking after three days & within six weeks it upped & died completely. Don't be taken in by the good looks, it lasts about 5 minutes! It's back to my trusty K800i for me, virtually indestructible!

Don't buy this phone whatever you do, you will live to regret it. My keys started cracking within 3 days & within 28 days it packed in completely. Sure, it's an attractive phone but it is shoddily built & falls apart really quickly. Don't be taken in by the looks, it is a very poor phone. I would warn everyone against it.

I love my phone I have the yellow option & have had for about a year the buttons have just started to crack which is annoying but doesn't affect the use. The only major problem is that my camera suddenly stopped working when I try to access it, it says that another application is running & that I have to close it first however there is no other application open I took it to the shop & they said to install the updates as this should fix the problem it didn't.
Has anyone else had this problem if so what did you do? Cheers xx.

I searched several shops in my area just so I could have the black & green S500i eventually after finding it in the fifth shop I bought it. Sadly in total I've taken this phone back to Carphone Warehouse 6 times! After the first 3 they replaced the entire thing so I had a new phone. However within a month & a half, I was back again as the microphone decided to pack in, making it pretty pointless in even having it.
Currently waiting on another new replacement & it most definitely isn't going to be the same model!
Bit of a letdown really.

Great looking phone (I have the black & green one) & does lots of things in an easy manner. Couple of downers, no flash & no radio. Also, the shortcut to the Internet is on a button which is easy to press which can cost you money. Apart from that, it's amazing. I've had it for 28 months now, nothing wrong with it. It hasn't once crashed, no keys cracked, it's perfect. This is probably only for the black & green phones, the black starts of shiny but the edges do get a little scuffed due to everyday use, but don't worry, it doesn't take anything away from it.
A definite buy for a middle range phone, once again, Sony Ericsson have triumphed :D.

I've had this phone (green model) 12 months & despite the negatives I LOVED this phone & am very sad to part with it. But sadly the poor physical durability of the design is making it impossible not to!
PROS.
- Incredible themes & ringtones.
- Great software, really well designed & user friendly, has never once frozen or turned itself off, recovered within ten minutes after getting a drenching in heavy rain (the earpiece went really quiet for 10 minutes but it was perfect as soon as it dried out).
- Really pretty, slim line & light design.
- Great camera & video (could possibly have done with a flash & more megapixels but that's what I bought a 10MP Samsung camera for last summer).
CONS.
- All my keys cracked within 2 months of having it & Sony Ericsson & O2 were less than helpful as far as getting a new keypad was concerned, having read countless reviews warning about this & reassuring myself I'd be more careful with my phone than the people in the reviews I'd read or that the problem might have been fixed by Sony Ericsson I was gutted when the first crack appeared! However they all still work fine.
- the poor memory is a real pain! There's no point getting this phone if you don't want to fork out £20 for a memory card!
- About a month ago the front cover over the screen fell off & bits are now falling off all over the place so 12 months really is about the maximum life of this phone.

Very good phone, had no trouble with it & I've had it 6 months. Only downside is the lack of radio & flash on the camera, but that doesn't matter much. The only trouble is if you have the copper colour & you drop it, the dents are very noticeable.

I had this phone for 12 months, never had a single problem with it, yes one of the keys cracked, but it didn't make a difference to the way I used it. The only way I realised it had broken was that when the light shone through a tiny little line.
The features are all right, can't complain about the camera as it is quite good for £80 new.
Despite all the reviews about the phone being so delicate & breaking every 5 minutes mine has never frozen or coughed, even after a few drops. It hasn't even got a scratch on it.
This was my first Sony & I wasn't sure when I first got it but it is extremely easy to use, the only issue you could have is that the keys are quite small, not a problem normally but when I have got my nails on it can become difficult.
There's only one reason why I have stopped using this phone & that's because my crush on the LG Cookie got the better of me & I finally bought it. I am hoping that next year I can review the Cookie with as much praise.

The digits cracking & the space button not working are definitely the biggest problem with it. I have had no other problems with it except it no longer vibrates when I receive calls.
But as I have had the phone for nearly a year now I see no point sending it away to get fixed as I'll be updating it soon anyway. I love Sony Ericsson's & I don't think this will stop me getting another.

When I first saw this phone I thought I have to buy it but then I saw all these comment about the buttons cracking & I was like WHAT? HOW? & think it was the owners fault for not looking after their phone but I was so wrong!
I am one of these girls that go for really girlie design type phone & my last phone last 3 years & other one lasted me 5 years I look after my phones!
But when I went to the shops to go phone shopping because my phone has died of old age poor thing & I crack the screen (I am such an idiot) anyway I was in phone shop & I asked if I could see it & the buttons were all cracked! ALL OF THEM! & I WAS LIKE NO WAY AM I BUYING THIS PHONE!
I am really upset about this. I really loved the look of this phone but I am not going to buy a phone that is going to last an hour. Sorry but no. I am really upset about this.
My advice is don't buy this phone unless your alright with cracked buttons otherwise go ahead!

Not for the designers who came up with this absolute rubbish, but for the tech guys who must be working overtime fixing these trashy little phones, only to have them returned to be fixed again a month or two later. Well, well, well, famous last words. You'll see in my previous post (30.10.08) that I was worried about the keys cracking. They didn't crack but the phone upped & died on me within a month instead!
No ringing, no alert message tones, (despite volume turned to max), people on the other end could hear me ringing but when they answered couldn't hear me speaking, nor I them.

I simply love this phone! Had it for a month & no keys have cracked, despite being a heavy texter. However, having read all the reviews on this page I think it is inevitable that the keys will crack at some point. Please, keep your fingers crossed for me that this doesn't happen! It just goes to show that you need to do your homework before buying a new phone. I got carried away by the looks of the phone, the fact it was a slide, on my network & a Sony Ericsson. Also the price tag was quite reasonable. However Sony Ericsson have really let themselves down with this phone & I am an avid Sony Ericsson fan! They MUST be well aware of this problem, & should do a mass recall & refund those people who are having problems with the phone.
Despite all this, I do love the phone & will be very sad when it dies. Sony Ericsson you can do better!

When I first got this phone I loved it. Great design, easy to use etc.
The camera quality in my opinion isn't all that great, but it's not terrible. You can only zoom on videos which is annoying. You can customise your pictures which is quite fun, but uploading them is a pain in the bits. Basically if you don't edit them you can't upload them. I don't know if anyone else had this problem, but it can be really annoying if say you've been on a night out & took lots of pictures.
The music player is generally great. I sometimes found it hard to put it on shuffle mode, but that might just be me. My headphones did stop working after about a year (I've had the phone for about 15 months), but they are easily replaced.
One thing I loved about this phone was the vibrating feature when navigating around the menu section. My friends would always comment on this when using the phone. Also the brain juice (I think it's called) game is great.
Texting is straightforward & the Bluetooth is fine (sometimes takes a while to become visible, but only a couple of minutes).
I've had a couple of problems with this phone. After 15 months, the keys have stopped working properly so I am having to change phones. This happened a couple of times before, but the problem went away. Also, the green part which covers the camera kept falling off which was really annoying.
Despite its few minor problems, I would recommend this phone :).

Hi I am writing this review because I got this phone & it cost me £80. The design on the top slider isn't so great as the two bars are very small & people with large thumbs should avoid! Firstly I got this phone it was fabulous! OK camara, not so good quality as others I have seen but oh well the battery lasted me up to 4 days without playing music however I played 1 song & it died instantly & needed to be charged. HOWEVER! If dropped it breaks. My friend was holding my mobile & it dropped on the floor & smashed instantly had to fix it.
My view is that the keys didn't fall off at all for me but Sony Ericsson need to rethink the design of their sliders, AVOID this phone & buy a Samsung.

Do not buy this phone! Although it looks good, & I like the features & it's very easy to use, it is NOT a sturdy phone. Had only had mine about 6 months when 4 of the keys cracked, the space button wouldn't work at all, it overheated when talking on the phone for more than half hour & it kept telling me to insert a SIM when it was already in, & it freezes. Oh & just a few days ago the centre circle button broke & that doesn't work at all now either. I have hardly ever dropped it & always looked after it, just seemed to fall apart. Can't get an upgrade for a good while yet so am currently looking for another phone. Rubbish! I would not have another.

It does look nice, & it has a very nice feel to it. It's pretty small, so it fits in your pocket, & I had the white & gold one which looked very nice. I think the glowing lights are great too.
There aren't actually that many fantastic features about it really. Camera isn't very good to be honest. I think this phone is really just for the looks. It seems quite a pointless phone to me, very overpriced too.
It's easy to use, but I text a fair bit & all of the keys actually cracked! I was quite appalled really.

I really wanted this phone & I got it 8 months ago as a birthday present it was the worst thing I could have ever have done, I have had constant problems with my phone it gets to hot when talking on the phone or when charging, the buttons have cracked several times, the camera broke, the screen kept switching on & off, then the software had to be updated & then I got a totally new S500i & after 3 days of having it the light at the side won't switch off so it is running my battery down I am now waiting on a list coming out to me to choose a new phone all together because of the S500i constantly causing me problems & the technical people seemed to have my phone more than I did.
So for anyone that is going to choose this phone because you think it looks cute & stylish I would think again & go for a different one buts that's only in my opinion.

I got this phone last week. Fully charged it & hasn't once worked properly. Put it back in its box to be returned. The phone is constantly turning itself off for no reason, then searching keeps coming up. Another fault is Insert SIM card keeps coming up, or else Emergency Calls only. The battery seems very loose at the back & doesn't fit in properly so that is the problem why it keeps turning off. The battery only lasted 8 hours even though I wasn't using it much because I couldn't! . Has got to be the worst phone I have ever come across.

Therefore I would advise anyone that wants a stylish fashionable phone that will last all of 2 months if you are lucky to buy it. But if you want a phone that will actually last longer than 2 months I suggest you don't buy this phone!

I got this phone about six months ago, it looked good, worked well & I was told by the salesman that it was a newer produced model that's keys don't crack.
My last phone was a Motorola & it was made of metal, whereas this phone feels very flimsy & plastic to hold. It freezes quite a lot but I could live with that. The Sony M2 card slot is impossible to open, & if it breaks which it will it is not covered by the warranty.
Six months on & daily another key cracks. If your tempted by this phone as I was buy the Motorola RIZR its made of metal & whereas Motorola's get the same software glitches they have much more helpful customer services.

However, I would not recommend this phone to my worst enemy, the signal is disgraceful! Next to another really old rubbish phone on the same network, it shows Emergency Calls Only, whilst the other shows full signal! Freezes most days.

I bought it, & have had nothing but trouble since, I am on about the fifth phone, the keys crack after about a month, & at first it kept freezing & shutting itself down. & Most recently I can turn it on & press one button & then it freezes!
Needless to say I am now taking it back to the shop where I bought it & I want a refund or a change of model! Not a repair! & when I next get another phone it probably won't be a Sony Ericsson! Very Disappointing!

I have just been reading some of the reviews of this phone. I have already submitted my own. A lot of reviews are regarding the number digits splitting. Many are saying it is OK as they still work, that it is our OWN fault & that it is only related to certain colour phones.
I have the yellow phone & it has been returned 4 times for cracked digits. It is NOT OK as I paid a lot of money for the phone & I expect it to be of a certain standard for what it is designed to do! I.e. Texting & dialling numbers is part of that. I have had many mobile phones over the years & I have never had any problems with the keypads.
Those of you that have said your digits have never split. You are either lucky or maybe just give it time!
It seems all colours have problems with splitting digits.
As with people mentioning their phone keeps freezing. I would advise you to update the software. This can be done on your computer through the Sony Ericsson website.
I however, am pleased with Sony Ericsson, as every time I have returned my phone for repair, it has come back quickly, repaired, albeit not for very long.

I have had this phone now for 1 year. It has been back to Sony Ericsson 4 times now for the numbers splitting down the middle. After the third time I had the phone returned I contacted them & asked if it was a design fault. They admitted that it was & that the number pad had been replaced with a new material. Two of my numbers have split again & I have just sent it yet again for repair.
I would not advise anyone to buy this phone unless they have a reliable back up phone to use whilst their Sony Ericsson S500i is back at the manufacturer to get repaired.
Other than that it is a good looking phone & easy to use, when you have it!

I bought my Black S500i a year ago from Carphone Warhouse. Within 2 months, I noticed the keys had nearly all cracked, but I didn't really mind too much, I do text a lot so assumed it came with all my heavy texting!
However, this last month & a half I have noticed that the phone freezes a LOT. I am not sure whether this is to do with it being too hot, mid to low battery, or the software.
Although it looks very stylish, I paid quite a bit of money for it (being on a student budget), & I am not happy with the way it's turned out at all. Not a student friendly buy!

I bought mine in January by the 4th week my buttons started to crack, then recently, it sticks all the time & every time I apply a theme it go strange on me. People who love to text don't get this phone because that's the main reason why the buttons crack. So far I am on my second phone (purple S500i). The first one all the keys cracked within 2 months, this is obviously bad design in the keys & I thought this was just a manufacturers fault. However, my second phone is doing it again, & when texting, the space button has to be pressed hard which is very frustrating.
I love the design of the phone & the lights at the side. I have had no other problems with it other than the buttons. This is my first Sony Ericsson phone & at first I loved it, I have only ever had Samsung's, & so it was nice to have a different set up with the menu etc.
I wish I hadn't gone back for the second chance with the phone, however I did so because it's so nice looking! It's a lot harder to text than with my Samsungs, & I think I'm going to go back to them.

I have this phone almost 1 year! It's very beautiful & good for people with style. I heard of people talking about cracking keys. Well. That's not a phone problem. The problem is YOU! If you are not careful with the phone, that is your fault. My keys cracked when I was writing a message. I was very angry I was pressing the keys a lot & they broke. When we say the break. Don't think they don't work. They are working fine but it's not beautiful to have a phone with broken keys. You can go to the nearest Sony Ericsson shop or maintenance shop to fix it! I went but they asked some papers from the mobile carrier I bought it from. But you just go, fix them & be careful with the keys! Plus if you open & close the slide quickly the camera greenish cover will scratch! But you can go to fix it. By the way. You can change it to any colour you want! White, Purple Brown & Yellow :D.

My buttons cracked 7 days after first having the phone then again 3 weeks later took it back to Carphone Warehouse who were willing to change the buttons & told me that the new buttons were now made of stronger material & I would have no more problems, roll on December & they cracked again, so I had new buttons & guess what I am waiting for their engineer to come back in this week to have yet ANOTHER new set of buttons! I've just recently bought the s500i ice purple & I think it's a gorgeous phone. I can't see how I'll break the key pad any time soon, although I have heard it's mostly the black ones this is happening too.
Gorgeous phone, good features just an awful battery life. Lasts not even 2 days, I followed the instructions & wasn't overcome by NPS (new phone syndrome) & let the battery charge fully before I even peeked at it, so I know that the battery life had nothing to do with me messing about before use. My old Sony Ericsson walkmans battery lasted 4 to 5 days before I needed to recharge.
But with the extra light changing facilities & animated backgrounds its no wonder the battery has a short life span. My only suggestion is get a car charger, take your charger with you when you're at work or at a friend's etc or make sure its fully charged before you leave the house.
The Battery life is the only problem I have with this phone, although I do find it was a tad on the expensive side when really it's just a bog standard phone with fancy displays.

I do not text hard am very slight when using the keypad & it still happened I have mailed Sony Ericsson to see what they can do now.

I give the S500i 90% for the design because it is so sleek & beautiful. Not too manly & not too girly. The light effects are very interesting & cool. I find that flat keys are no problem when texting but if you have chubby fingers then you might want to rethink small keys. HOWEVER, I think that the idea of changing themes are great, but some of the normal wallpapers are quite rubbish & they could be better.
The features are good, musicDJ (I had an old phone that had something like this. Really cool, make your own music by adding beats, bass, drums, piano etc) videoDJ & photoDJ. Internet connection is really good, never had a problem with the Internet automatically going on but then again I lock my phone before I put it into my pocket. LOVE the fact that when you send a message, it shows you your credit balance. I have a habit of forgetting to check & then suddenly realising I have like 62p in my phone! Games aren't the best. The brain one is like brain training. You get one that is similar to Tetris but really different & strange. Picture is great, really clear & not fuzzy or pixelly like some other phones.
The usability, OK it took me a little while to get used to working the buttons as my other phone was different but you do get used to it eventually. The battery life was driving me crazy! The day I got it I charged it fully & then at night, it had run out of battery & I had to charge it again. Then the next morning, before it had even reached noon, I had to recharge it again & then 7 hours after that I had to recharge it again. But I do spend a lot of time on the Internet & on games so I guess that if I want to keep the battery life going I have to cut down on web time. Oh, but for the life of. Me battery!
I have no problem with the keys. People that have keys breaking are being too rough on their phone. Texting & pushing the keys too hard or pressing with their nails.
No problem with camera freezing & although at the start, the back of the phone was hard to get on, it will go on eventually. There's just a technique of doing so correctly.
THIS PHONE ID REALLY GOOD & ID recommend IT TO anyone BUT IF YOU ARE UNSURE, THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU NEED YOUR PHONE TO HAVE, DESIGN OVER PRACTICALITY, OR PRACTICALITY OVER DESIGN. YOU'LL FIND ENOUGH REVIEWS FOR IT & I HOPE THIS HELPS.
Oh & for the price, I got my purple S500i around £80, good value for money any day!

DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE. Sony Ericsson have greatly disappointed me. I will know from now on not to be fooled by pretty images on the Internet.
- This phone is so fragile it makes a weird sound when you hold it because it's all plastic. You feel it will crack open any minute
- It's really difficult to open, again because you worry you may break it & I am gentle.
- the card holder is just ridiculous, once you slide a card in you can only get it out with tweezers!
- As normal (for this silly phone), the keys split & I am no heavy texter, BIG DESIGN ERROR!
The features are nice but their importance fades away in the light of the afore mentioned issues.
I should have bought that pretty slick metal Nokia.

I was thinking of buying the Sony Ericsson S500i or the W580i but now after reading the reviews I am worried if the buttons are going to break.
Do the buttons only break if you are rough with the phones?
Which is best the S500i or the W580i?

Well I really liked the look of this phone (the purple one) BUT from reading all the reviews I am worried about that thing of keys cracking, are the new models with stronger key pads out now?
ALSO is it worth as much as it costs? I am going to have to save up loads of money so I am wanting the phone to be decent quality!
The lighting effects & screen changing thingy look amazing though!
So far the cheapest one I have found is £80 quid, anyone know of any place that does it cheaper? CHEERS.

I used to have a w580i, great phone, loved the music it could pump out. Upon searching for specs on the S500i, I found this review & all of the funny comments about 'rubbish service' or 'terrible phone' junk. The problem nowadays with mobile phones is that people are WAY too rough with them, & don't even know it.
When I first got the w580i in White, my friend had gotten one the same day in Grey & Black. It was SIX MONTHS before I replaced it because the Return key wasn't working, & Sony Ericsson just decided give up & gave me a BRAND NEW MODEL.
I got the phone back & it felt better than ever, & the slide was even smoother than it had been.
My friends phone? He had the same problems all of you did after about half a month to a month & a half, because he treats phones like garbage, hammering keys & always screwing with functions (AKA, sliding it up & down for no reason). Phones & Tanks have only one thing in common, they're here because of advancements in technology. Phones can hardly take a rough phone dial.
Anyway. The s500i looks so much more beautiful than my old w580i white. Unfortunately keys won't be breaking for a long time.

This phone looks really good a stylish however, I brought the phone but within a week the speaker went. This meant I could only talk when on speaker phone not ideal when you're walking through town looking rather silly! Ha.
I took this back & got it replaced with another phone. This was OK for a while but then the camera broke. It just turned green & would not save photos. Then Bluetooth would not work.
Therefore, I would not advice anyone to get this phone. Oh yeah one of my keys broke too. It does still work but doesn't look very nice!

Really nice looking phone, but a shame about all the problems. I bought one in September last year, & within a week the keys had cracked, but I ignored this. By December, the microphone had stopped working, so I could not be heard when making phone calls, so I had it repaired.
After about a month, most of the keys had cracked again, & some of the navigation buttons had stopped working, so off it went to be repaired again. 5 weeks later, I found out the phone could not be repaired, & so I was getting a replacement. 6 weeks on, I only have 2 buttons which have not cracked.

I love this phone. It's so pretty & I love the way it changes colour & the flowers change. But it's built so badly. Two of my keys have cracked, it occasionally freezes, when I call landlines I get a strange rattle down the speaker & if you drop it, even from a small height, the whole front casing falls off, but you can't take the back off to get the battery out for neither love nor money! It's such a shame because it's such a nice design, but I'll be taking it back & seeing if I can exchange for a Samsung. Oh & all this breaking has happened in only a month & a half.

I've had the phone about 5 months love the phone easy to use but the Internet keeps coming on due to the easy access button on the front, being easy to accidently being pressed so I've had to set the Internet on the wrong net work to stop this. I've also had it repaired twice one the main menu button broke & one side light stopped & the keypad buttons cracked this is a common fault on this type of phone as I was told once I took it back this also happens on the w580, fair play it was repaired very quickly.

- Does the keys still work even after they crack?
- Does the battery cover get slack?
Also I am definitely getting a Sony Ericsson but since the new phones that they have put on the market are slide up the keys seem to crack on all of the models.
Wrote to Sony Ericsson & they said that they never got anything about the keys cracking & it was a rumour. They said if it did happen I can send it back. I was going to get it tomorrow but the lot of comments have made me think again. Can you answer the questions please asap.

I love this phone. Had it a week & three of the buttons have cracked. Just getting a contact with Dial a Phone who I got it from.
I hadn't read the reviews on it. I think they've cracked from playing the games on it. But really they shouldn't crack so easily, you're meant to press the keys!
So anybody who is writing a review saying the buttons don't crack. They do! So if you get the phone, just be aware of this.

I just bought this phone, it's really beautiful with an amazing camera & amazing sound quality. There isn't much memory at all, but I am going to buy a memory card so that's fine. Also, the program on my computer doesn't work, but I am getting a replacement CD for it. Nobody else has reported this problem so it could just be my computer. My keys haven't cracked. Three of my friends have this phone & 2 of their keys have cracked. However, they both use their nails to text & the people who's keypads haven't broken use their fingers. I use my fingers so I am OK.
So buy this phone, or the W580i they're both really good.

I had this phone for a massive 26 days! I really liked the way it used to change its theme from night to day & special days like valentines it went red. It really does make us girls go wow!
I read all the reviews prior to buying it & took a chance. On the 25th day yep you guessed it the space button cracked in half, & I was upset. I contacted the company & they said to return it & I got a full refund.
I liked the design so much that I have now purchased a W580i & I am just hoping that it won't do the same!
Don't even bother contacting Sony Ericsson because they just kept telling me that they have no reported cases of keys cracking. Absolute rubbish!
Apparently if you purchase this phone prior to Nov 2007 the keys will crack. Anything manufactured after then is supposed to be fine, according to Carphone Warehouse anyway!
I wouldn't be put off the phone itself, all I can say is if you do buy it make sure you can send it back if anything happens. But all said it is a nice phone!
It's well worth buying a memory card too as not a lot of memory space on phone.

I have used Sony Ericsson mobile phones for quite sometimes now, ranging from K700i to W800i, then W300i, Z610i, Z310i, Z530i, K750i, & recently W610i. My latest addition is this one, S500i! You know what, I simply LOVE this one! Ever fall in love & feel like you can't let go of that loved one's hand? Ah, that's the feeling when I became a proud owner of this model! I never thought I'd feel so enticed by a mobile phone for its sheer beauty & of course, its usability!
I guess it's the nature inspired theme, & the light effect. Or maybe its user friendly software & an affordable piece of charm. I know Sony Ericsson had overcome the keypad nuisance, so this is a splendid phone to own. No complain from me so far. The battery life does wear out pretty quickly, but I am so used to this Sony Ericsson's mobile phone's predictable loophole. Beside from that, it's nice in your palm, & overall, a superb phone for its range! Great sound, great design, great features, both the hardware & the software.

DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE! In fact I won't be buying a Sony Ericsson again as they have obviously lost the plot. Sure it looks great but the keys cracked within a few weeks (which I lived with) but then some of the navigation keys stopped working also. I contacted the customer support by email & they told me to send it to a service centre in Banbury they promised a 3 to 5 working day turn around, that was on January 5th & I got the phone back yesterday, 3rd March. I got tired of emailing them as they take about a week to reply. When I finally got through by phone (after being kept on hold for 40minutes! ) they accepted that there were design & manufacturing issues with this model & a problem getting spares which had caused mine to be at the service centre for 8 weeks or 40 working days as they prefer to call it. Take my advice, spend your hard earned cash elsewhere.

MY microphone had busted & was covered constantly, by the little piece with the little holes on it, right under the key pad, well that kept moving slightly & would cover the microphone. Anyone thinking of buying this phone. Don't!
Of course I loved mine when I first got it, it was yellow & great to use. But the first one I got I had to take it back the very next day as the connections were dodgy. Then the new one I was given the camera decided to stop working & would freeze every time I went on to it so I would have to take the back off & remove the battery, turn it on again. It was sent in for repair 3 times, each time the camera didn't work when I got it back. & then the buttons began breaking, in the end Carphone Warehouse decided to replace it (with a 2nd hand one, which was black & green. & not very nice), when I got this one 3 of the buttons didn't work, so they ordered me a new one & I had to put up with this phone for a while not being able to go back to the main screen as the back button didn't work, & the select button didn't work either. In the end after a lot of hassle & hours spent on the phone to Carphone Warehouse, they gave in & let me change make & model, & I now have a lovely Samsung phone which works perfectly!
Apparently this is the first Sony Ericsson slidy phone they did so it was really badly made & which is why there have been so many problems.
Please don't waste your money buying this phone, it will have to be sent in for repair before you know it.

Pretty on the outside with some great features, until after about one week of owning it, one of the keys cracked down the middle, thinking it was just me being a heavy texter, I checked it out on the website & found over 300 reviews of people with the same problem. Around 20 other people I no own the phones cousin the w850i, which also has buttons which crack. When changing my sim card, I removed the back of the phone which took me around 20 minutes, then when trying to re-apply the back, it wouldn't go on, now being held together with selotape. The software on the phone is also disappointing, as the phone likes to black out when it gets bored. Ashamed of this awful piece of technology, I am not getting another Sony Ericsson unless I read at least 2000 good reviews. I have lost my pride with them.

It worked fine for about three weeks & then disaster struck! It kept telling me I had no network access. I tried various sim cards & none would work so I knew it was a problem with the phone. I took it back to the 02 shop & they sent it away to be fixed.
Two weeks later I got it back & they'd had to send me a new phone, which meant I'd lost all my numbers, messages & pictures.
To make matters even worse. Tonight it's stopped working again, the same problem with the network. When I tried to make calls today it didn't ring out on my phone but the person I was calling knew I was calling & answered, however, my phone remained silent.

About 2 weeks ago when I tried to get my sim card out, it was stuck fast & would not budge, even using tweezers etc, so when I took it to the O2 shop they had to effectively smash the phone open to get my sim & they gave me a new handset which I was happy with. THEN no more than 4 days after I got the new handset the number 6 key cracked & when I took it to the O2 shop it had been purchased from they said all they could do was send it back for repair but if I did I would lose all my pictures, stored numbers, messages etc. So I decided it would be best to leave it. However 2 days later the number 4 key cracked too (I had been told that the problem with the keys on the earlier model had been solved, but clearly NOT! ). Then, today to top it all off the screen just went blank. I restarted it & low & behold when I try & send a text message now, I have to basically guess what I am typing as the actual text is invisible, as is the recipient's name when you try & send the message. This is really frustrating as I have been sending the text messages I want to send, to myself, just to check they are spelt right & not some random words & then forwarding them to the right people! I will be returning this phone to the O2 shop tomorrow & will expect a new phone there & then as it is in my mind completely ludicrous that after only a month's use it should be doing this. Please don't buy this phone if you are disappointed easily. I fully admit it's lovely to look at, but underneath, I suspect, it's seriously flawed. Sony Ericsson please take note!

Where we live in surrey the signal is poor to bad but this phone gets a good signal every time. A GOOD PURCHASE.

Can I just say, before I decided which phone to get, I read all of these reviews that were submitted before Christmas & it did put me off. After looking through all kinds of mobile shops & magazines, there was nothing at all that I thought would be better than this phone. I went to t mobile & the lady there said that they only had 2 in stock, because there were all kinds of software problems with it, & the cracking key problem was also an issue.
However, I decided to take a risk, & get it anyway for Christmas. I have had now for a month, & I can safely say that it's the best phone I have ever had. None of the keys have cracked. I have had no software problems. & I am constantly amazed by the ever changing background, that really does change constantly!
I don't know whether I was just lucky to get a good phone where there are obviously a few not so good ones around, but if you want to take a risk, I would urge you to buy this phone :).
It is actually amazing, & I love it!

I've had this phone a month now & I can say without doubt it's the best phone I've ever had. The only gripe I have with it is that I keep connecting to the web on it as the web browser button is really close to the back button. It could also do with a radio. The music player is just as good as a Sony Ericsson Walkman phone. I love the ever changing themes, one day I have butterfly's the next firefly's the next multicoloured raid, I never know what is going to be there when I open my phone! It holds loads of texts & the volume is great. I've had no trouble with keys cracking or anything like that & I have dropped it a few times & not a mark on it. Lovely phone.

The BEST PHONE I HAVE EVER HAD! I wrote a review for this site before I got the phone, about the keys cracking. But I have had this phone since Boxing Day (26th December 2007) & now it's the 20th of January 2008, no problems at all. None of the buttons look as though they are going to crack. Someone said the phone feels cheap & plasticy, but it feels very solid & metalish.
Overall the phone is brilliant, but the only problem is with my network. I was supposed to get ten pounds credit with the phone & I still have not got it. I called them up several times but every time they told that I will receive my credit in 24 hours, but obviously I didn't. BUY THIS PHONE!

OK the phone is pretty cool but don't expect it to last very long, it should only be used as a fashion accessory, I.e. Very occasionally! I've had this phone for under 6 months & am about to send it back for the 3rd time due to the keypad buttons cracking (on 2 occasions), ear piece speaker breaking, phone going completely silent & lights not working.
The features on this phone are nice, it looks good & is dead funky when it rings & the lights flash but it isn't robust enough for everyday use & if you really have to get it, don't get the black version with the green keypad as it picks up finger prints very easily & looks grubby in no time.
You're probably thinking I am a bit of a ruffian to get all these problems but I am not I promise! I still have the protective film on the screen to stop it getting scuffed & always keep it in a pocket of its own so as not to get scratched or bumped by keys, wallet etc.
Verdict, buy one as a spare & use it for special occasions!

I've not yet bought this product but am really attracted to its colour & design. I want the purple model & from what I am hearing because the purple model is newer than the previous colours there have been changes & modifications to the keypad to stop the constant cracking.
The purple model is available for pay as you go from O2 for £99.99. Have Sony Ericsson released any official statements regarding the correction & modification to the button design? I couldn't find anything on their site.

Hi, I bought this phone yesterday at an absolutely remarkable price from O2. Before I bought this I actually had the Prada phone. Well, I decided to downgrade my phone slightly. For one, I always buy expensive phones & then get really wound up when I scratch them or keep having to wipe them every 10 minutes to get finger prints off. Secondly, all the flashy features on the expensive phones & I never use them.
I thought I would get myself this phone because I loved the look of it, & it has some good features. Only having a 2 MP camera doesn't bother me as this camera was the same as the Prada & I've taken about 10 pictures on my s500i now & they seem top quality to me. The way I see it is that I've got myself a digital camera that is 12 megapixels, & so if I want to take a top quality picture then I will use that. Not my phone!
As for the MP3 memory, same reason, there isn't much memory, but if I want to listen to some MP3's then I will use my MP3 player which I always carry with my anyway! I just don't use a lot of the features on the expensive touch screen phones that I have had in the past so they are just a waste in my opinion. It's OK to get a nice flashy phone, once you have shown it off to your mates a few times, nobody is interested what phone you have! & besides, I have shown this phone off too many of my friends & family & they all love it! Just like I do.
I have the Ice purple version of this phone which has a flat keypad. I know I am only on day 2 of using this phone but so far, NONE of my keys have cracked. Will have to wait & see for that one!
As for the person who wrote a post to say that this phone does not have Internet or Picture messaging, I think they must have written a review for a different phone because I was on the Internet on my phone for most of the night last night downloading various themes for my mobile, which are fantastic. & I have also received numerous picture messages. So I am sorry whoever wrote that mustn't have been able to figure it out or something!
All in all, by far the classiest phone on the market, great price, great value, & I just love it! Buy it!

WOW. This phone is brilliant, I think I feel so strongly about it because when I initially saw it, I hated it (in the yellow & gold colour) but when I saw the black & green I simply had to have it! The colours complement each other so well, & always striving for differentiation, I loved the fact that it can be fully customised complete with coloured lights & different themes.
Initially I was torn between this & the K770i, which is also fabulous, but this really took the biscuit, especially since I am stuck with a boring Samsung D900 at the moment & just had to change!
The camera could be better, & it would be improved with a radio, maybe even a more intelligent keypad (that doesn't break) but honestly, once you see the phone & work it, you will love it!
At the moment the purple colour is on SALE at for £79.99 & you can do a trade in of your old phone & you may even get MORE money off if you have been with O2 previously! Class? No.
Overall, I love it & I can't wait until it arrives, hopefully the end of this week!

OK so I've just bought this phone for myself & I can honestly say it's GREAT!
Like most of you, I was concerned about the keypad. Well fear not! Sony Ericsson did INDEED address this issue COMPLETELY. Originally the phone was suppose to have a bulky keypad, plastic & raised, in the later manufactured phones (mine is week 48), they've replaced those keypads with a metallic, flat keypad! (I really do mean flat), they're metal & shows no sign of cracking whatsoever.
Hopefully that helps you guys who are on the borderline of buying this phone.

80% for features since you got a 2MP camera that cannot be zoomed in unless you're using the VGA video recorder.
95% for usability since the keypads give you a hard time to dial or type in characters. All the rest are splendid. This phone in general is amazing if not for the weak keypads.

The ever changing display is great & will turn heads. My model is the black one with green key pad, & my key pad is flat, I believe the earlier models had a slight curve in the key pad meaning there was a weakness down the middle. The camera is maybe the only down side as it doesn't have a flash but then I did have a Samsung d900 that had a flash & I hardly ever used it. You won't be disappointed if you get this phone, besides if you do get any problems just take it back & get it replaced, shops do have to repair or replace faulty goods.

So far (one week! ), none of my keys have cracked, though they do feel a bit clicky at times. I bought the S500i in July & after two weeks I could see some cracks on the keypad. I went back to the shop & they were able to fix it. After a week the cracks were still there. They told me they were going to change the keypad again. But is there any way to lead Sony Ericsson to withdraw this model & to swap the broken one with a new one? Apart from this I think this phone is great.

I have had this phone since August & I have to say that it's very good. The camera is of good quality & the durability of the casing is also sturdy & strong.
I send roughly 2000 text messages a month & I have had no problems with cracking keys or broken buttons. I find the buttons easy to use to text even though I have long fingernails.
The only problem I have come across is that my screen is starting to play up & is appearing in negative colours like on a filmstrip. But this hasn't really affected the usability of the phone.
The battery life has been good. I guess it's to do with the first charge that the phone has received as to why some people have had trouble with the battery life. As you can tell my phone gets used a lot & I only have to charge it every couple of days.

ALL of my keys are cracked, three of the most important buttons have stopped working so navigation is difficult, one of the side lights doesn't change colour anymore, it just stays red, & memory card plastic cover thing at the top won't stick in, just hangs out all the time annoying & not forgetting the rubbish battery life! Hi peeps I have had this phone for ages now & I really like it but 4 of my keys have cracked. The 3 key cracked first & the 6 9 & # key followed shortly after. I must admit the battery life is quite poor but that is only if you are listening to your music a lot throughout the day. Also if you by this phone you will need a memory card which isn't hard to find but it is yet another cost for the phone.
Even after all of this I still love it & lots of my friends want one. It always catches people's eyes & the camera is very good. Hope this helps you.

I recently bought the S500i in purple & made the point of asking about the cracked keys. Apparently it was a design flaw in the other colours. The keypad on the older S500i's has a slight curve on it. This means its line of weakness is right down the middle & cracks when put under pressure. (this means people who text holding the phone in both hands are more likely to crack the keys than those that text with only one hand & may account for some people' not cracking as much) On the new purple model, they redesigned the structure & the keypad is now totally flat & not curved. This means purple S500i's don't have the problem with cracking keys any more. Absolutely love the phone & everything about it. The colours are amazing & the interface is brilliant. I hope this phone doesn't disappear off the market, or hopefully in 2 years when mine has to be pried out of my hand for a new phone, this exact interface is on another phone.
The purple model feels quite solid & sturdy & already owning a few Sony Ericsson's, I am sure it's the best one out there, it turns heads. Completely different from everything else on the market & definitely get you noticed when you get it out.

Sony Ericsson just keep saying send it back to them & they will replace the keypad, turn around being 3 to 5 working days however it seems to take them 2 weeks or more before I received the phone back again. I am gutted. I spent about an hour in the Carphone Warehouse yesterday trying to decide between the S500 or Samsung U600 & I finally decided this one simply because it was more original & touch screen would probably anger me, but then I got it home, I haven't even used it properly yet as Orange still haven't connected me & I just cannot use it. When I slide my phone up it takes ages to show a screen, I thought this might be because of all the stuff I transferred over from my old phone, but when I deleted a few things it still didn't get any better.
I will be interested in finding out exactly how well this bad boy will work when I finally do get there. I have been slightly reassured by the positive comments, & the worst things I've read are about the keys & the delay in reaction when sliding the phone up. So when I got it home I realised my rush purchase was in fact the best purchase ever! Then it all went wrong. Firstly, I have one key which has not cracked, secondly, sometimes the screen doesn't want to wake up when I slide it open, then when it does realise I want to use it, the main menu as just a black screen so now I have to memorise where everything is so I can still use it. I noticed somebody had said IGNORE the RUBBISH THAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT the LIGHTS NOT WORKING & KEYS CRACKING. That is total rubbish.
Well, it's not rubbish, they do crack.
I had about 4 replacements for this phone, because the buttons kept cracking within 1 to 2 weeks. The last time they broke I hadn't even been using the keypad much, as I wasn't texting that week. The Carphone Warehouse told me that the buttons were only cracking in the first batch that Sony Ericsson had made, & they wouldn't be having problems once they had improved the keypad. My 3rd replacement phone had a much stronger keypad, but within about 3 weeks it had cracked again. I hear the same problem is happening with the W850i. Hopefully Sony Ericsson will fix this problem.
But apart from that, it's a great phone!
The sound quality & volume is amazing, & it doesn't freeze or anything when you're on the music player. The camera is good the themes are very nice & the lights make this a very attractive phone.
I bought a different phone instead, which was the Samsung U600. I have only had it for about 6 days & I regret getting it so much. I think Sony Ericsson is a much better make, & I wish I had kept my s500i, broken or not. I think I am going to take my Samsung back ;].

While I do love this phone, I am just about to take it back & swap it for the second time.
My second one (despite the folks in the Sony store swearing that the replacement was from the new batch) now has even more cracked keys than my first one & I've had this second one for a lot less time.
The sound has gone a bit tinny & hard to hear when I take a call. I am not sure why that is, possibly it took a slight bump & can't cope, so if you get this phone, don't drop it at all. Or wrap it up in bubble wrap. It does also occasionally not come out of standby when I slide it open. One time, I thought it had died, but two slides later & it came to life again.

Took the phone back & was issued with a replacement, once again 3 weeks later the keys cracked again. Still a common problem apparently so steer clear, I ended up buying a Nokia.

I was a bit worried about build quality & other glitches after reading several mixed reviews but I can report that my phone has behaved perfectly. It is the most recent batch (Late Oct 07) so maybe Sony have improved the quality a bit?
I would certainly recommend this phone to all users. For years I have carried the P Series, first the P800 then P900 & P910 but I was fed up with the bulky size & weight. The new S500i has all the features I need & it can slip into my shirt pocket, fantastic!
The menus are all very easy to use, even better than my old P910. The only thing I miss is hand writing recognition for text messages but I don't send that many so it is a small price to pay. The screen is fantastically clear & the interface is really intuitive so good news all round. I hope this may help someone make the right decision to buy this new phone. GREAT.

I chose to ignore the many negative posts on the Internet about the problems with cracked keys, loose slider, poor illumination of 3, 6, 9, # keys & I regrettably bought two S500i ice purple phones. I have since returned my daughter's two phones & will never buy another Sony Ericsson product until their customer satisfaction ratings improve.
Both brand new batch Ice Purple S500i phones had the identical same problems. The 3, 6, 9, # keys were barely illuminated as compared to the other brightly illuminated keys, the sliders were flimsy (I don't think the slider will hold up over time), & I was not about to wait to see if the keys would crack. The dealer has since quit selling this particular model phone due to the numerous returns.
My advice. A few complaints, I would ignore. But a slew of documented complaints as you will find posted all over the Internet (do a Google search with key words). You get what you deserve if you buy this phone & will join the idiots, like myself, who refused to accept logic & made a decision based on the emotion of cute colours & a overrated light show. Hence, you are crazy if you buy this phone knowing what you know about this problem plagued phone.
In my opinion, a much better choice is the Mobile Choice Awards, 'Phone of the Year', Samsung G-600. This is the highest award achieved by any mobile phone & it's only a little more expensive that the S500. If you look at the many reviews, professional, & user, there is little doubt that the G600 is indeed currently the best overall phone in the market without 3G (S500 also does not have 3G) & the cute colours, but still slim & good looking.

I got this phone on contract. It's beautiful & the lights are exciting etc. But within a week all the buttons were cracked. Took it back (had to drive all the way to the metro centre to get it sorted) & they replaced it with a new model. Within a week the keys had smashed on that one. This time it was over my 28 day contract thing so it had to be sent away for new buttons. They cracked. New ones again. One cracked, plus the camera went black & the lights on the side flashed crazily & then went white. No more colour lights. It's in for repair for the 3rd time & I am at my wits end.
It's a gorgeous phone & it's tempting but it's just too fragile. Not the best Sony Ericsson has done.

How much does it go for in shops?
I was thinking about getting this phone for Christmas & now I am pretty convinced that it's the one I want. I don't know if the problem with the battery running low quickly is because it's new. Normally with things that run on a battery it can take a while for it to use its whole capacity. You should try letting it run down really low then charging it because it builds the battery. My ipod used to do the same thing when I first got it a couple of years ago & it took about 4 months for it to be able to use the full battery but now its fine & does the amount it should.

It's beautiful to look at but like others I have had my phone 10 weeks & it has already been returned to Sony after 6 of the keys cracked in half within first 6 weeks. The battery life is appalling, I have to charge the phone every night & if I manage to make a call from it, it drains the battery to 50%. So buy it for its looks not for its usability you'll be disappointed-not Sony's usual standard.

I love this phone I have had it for a bit now, I have the black/green one. All my friends like it, it really catches the eye. The colours on mine are fine & so are the keys. They have not cracked yet & show no sign of cracking either. The volume for the music is brilliant & so is the camera the only negative I can think of is the memory. You will have to get a memory card for it, but not to worry as I have found a very reasonable website for them.

I have the yellow one & I love it. It's been 2 months since I've purchased it, haven't experienced the keys cracking but my lights are kind of weird now. The left side no longer has yellow or red while the right side still has all its colours. All I get from the left side is cyan, blue & green. It's so depressing as it works with 3 colours on one side when the other side still has its spectrum.

I really like the phone but notice it needs charging more regular than any other phone I have had, I have noticed that the menu button towards the left hand side has fallen out of place so in order to use that key you kind of have to push it up into place. I've had the phone (Mysterious Green) for a week now. & here's what I have to say:
- It's very stylish & classy (that's why I bought it).
- the features are just the basic ones I want in a phone, although I haven't tried yet what applications I can put in it to make it more powerful.
- I believe I had the new release, since I didn't experience keypad cracks (or is this too early to say? I'll find out).
- the light on the side of the phone is awesome! But I think you cannot change it to the colour you want (There is a default for each style). I have a problem though with calls. I changed it to Pink but when I receive a call, I don't see the colour! : (.
- the battery life of my unit is terrible. I don't know if it's just my battery. I have to recharge it every night.

I have the black & green phone. Has anybody else done this or had any problems I'd like to know before I send it away!
I like the phone but the only thing putting me off is the keys. I also find it quite hard to text as the keys are quite small so if you have big fingers or long nails like me then you will find it hard too compared to most other phones. I am a fast texter but find it extremely difficult with this phone.

My only complaints would be that there is no flash on the camera, & that you can't zoom in normal mode. However if you change the picture size to 'VGA 9640x480] then you can zoom & the pictures are the same size as large ones anyway! As with most Sony Ericsson's, it's really user friendly. There is no lag between menu selections which is huge with me. I also love the design so that's a plus. Also about the keys cracking, apparently they fixed it & the new shipments coming out in August have thicker keys or something. I've had the phone for about 3 weeks now & no cracks so that may be the case. The only thing that I don't like too much is that you cannot zoom in the 'normal' mode for camera (at least I don't know how to). Anyway, in short, I really like the phone.

I keep my mobile in my pocket or bag when out & about & several times I have noticed that when I went to use it the Internet search engine page was up on the screen although I left it in sleep mode. If this is what is draining the battery then it is very poor design. You should not be able to connect like that.

When the phone is not opened the text & stuff pops out fine, it's just that the phone is trying to conserve battery, it shows in a dim light for a bit then goes to sleep mode. I don't know if you have this problem or not but I could not change the two silver soft keys, also I wanted to change the colour from light blue to another not just for incoming calls. About the keypad cracks: Sony Ericsson released that the green paint is having a reaction to the plastic of the keypad numbers, causing them to crack. That is why you don't see this issue with the Yellow version since it uses a different kind of paint. I was going to get the Green version but I guess I'll stick with the Yellow.

I got this phone free last night from Carphone Warehouse, I have it over a 18 months swap it contract, which means when I reach the 9 month point I can swap my handset, for the remainder of the contract. Woo hoo to Carphone Warehouse.
I initially wanted the phone just from looking in a book & seeing its picture, but after reading thought no way not having that, NO 3G!
Trust me when I say that once the phone is in your hand in the shop & you are having a little test run. You will want no other phone. It is stylish, sleek & just pure luminous. It changes all the time, when someone rings your phone the hidden lights change colour softly as the phone rings, it's just FAB, a real fashion statement, a mini Blackpool illuminations in the palm of your hands. Woo hoo.
I have had it for approx 16 hours in total, but I am quite nifty on a phone & had it sussed in no time, previously had the Sony P990i & so far I prefer the S500i.
The only downfall I will say, which may be Carphone Warehouse's mistake, is that I Bluetoothed 3 songs from my old phone to my S500i & the memory was full! I asked in the shop if it had a memory stick because I couldn't see it & he said no, the memory stick goes in at the top, mini memory stick M2! So I have to go back now & ask for one, hopefully I'll get it free but we'll see because they do cost (for a good one) approx £30.00 +.

Having had the phone for two whole days now - thought I would add a couple more comments.
The issue about not being able to see messages / missed calls / clock etc is probably because the screen light goes out, to save the battery. All you have to do is press any key (without opening the slider) & Hey Presto, everything lights up again. This is not a problem for me.
Something a little bit more concerning is the battery life. In one day, I made 4 short calls, added my phone contacts, sent a few texts & did some phone set up. At the end of all this, the battery needed recharging. Something to keep an eye on, I think.

Another great Sony Ericsson phone! Don't listen to the people who have said that you can't see if you have a text message unless you slide the phone up, all you need to do is press a button & the screen lights up.
Ringtones are very loud on this phone & you will never miss a call. Also, the light effects are amazing & really set the phone apart from other ordinary mobiles. The handset is very slim & light. I would say it is mainly a phone for females.

The keypad is a bit small. The keys on the slider to answer calls & get to menus etc are thin bars & close to the other keys. This is not good for someone with chubby fingers. Menus seem easy to use. I have set my phone up & played with it & haven't needed to use the manual yet!
It did, however, take me half an hour to work out how to get the battery cover off! It proved very difficult without the battery in as you have to press down & slide. All that happened to me was that the cover 'caved in' a bit. After looking at a handy video on the Sony website (troubleshooting - replace battery) I managed to get the cover off & get the battery in for charging. After that, it was OK to open as the battery had filled the gap inside.
Volume is good. I don't use many of the non-traditional phone features (I only use it make calls & text etc) & this phone is a definitely better than simple Samsung phones. I still need to investigate the camera & other stuff, but so far so good.
All I need to do now is to wait & see if the 'honeymoon' period ends & faults or irritations start cropping up. I have this phone on 12 months free line rental :-) I must make sure that I claim my cash backs on time. So a lovely phone for free & very small monthly bills, it can't be bad.
Verdict so far - LOVELY :-).

Bought off eBay $360 AU, not releases in Oz yet, gorgeous phone. Buy off eBay much better price.

Very pretty phone with great features, but I only had the phone for a week before the buttons started to crack. & I certainly am not rough with my phone. 5 of the 12 keypad buttons are cracked. After I googled this problem of mine I found out that I wasn't the only one that this happened to!

This phone is awesome. It changes the theme colors automatically (day & night). It's very small & flat & can conveniently fit in your jean small pocket. Very convenient! I strongly recommend the purchase of this phone.

Looks absolutely stunning, amazing menus. However, I expected more features & the thing that bothers me the most is the fact that when the phone is closed you can't see if there is a text message or missed call (unless you heard them coming but as my phone is on silent pretty often. ). I love the phone but this part really disappointed me. I hope I'll get over it or the phone will have to go.

Hi guys, I love this phone & have been waiting for it for months, however I have heard a couple of nasty rumours & was wondering if anyone that has one already could help me out.
- When the phone is closed you can't see the clock or if you have any texts or missed calls etc? I have heard that these don't show up unless you slide the phone open?
- There are a few comments regarding the quality of the keypad. Cracking of the keys seems to be a bit more common that I would like?
Any comments on these would be much appreciated! Cheers.

Looks rather tasty but it's not got 3G though. Could do with some more stuff but that would make it bigger & ruin its wicked design. I am getting it, got to.

I have the mysterious green version of the phone & let me say this. It's awesome. The colour is just amazing. The features & usability is also awesome. The only thing I got to say it needs is the flashlight function & that its a bit slow at times.

Bought this phone as I like Sony Ericsson but wanted a slider. Fell in love with this because of the design & I haven't been disappointed. Bought unbranded, unlocked & although not 3G, my three SIM contract card works with everything (which was a complete surprise) apart from accessing the net. (I also have a Vodafone SIM which I intended to use). I am able to access My3 & that's it but I am not really bothered as I'll just Bluetooth stuff across from my PC. So that was a bonus really. The themes are lovely & ever changing, sound is great, Bluetooth works well & the phone is neat to hold. The illuminations certainly turn heads on an incoming call. The screen is bright & clear. All in all I am delighted with the phone.

Bought this phone sim free from carphone wharehouse for £199.95 in yellow. Thought the lights at the side would drain battery but it doesn't. Battery level tops itself back up when not in use.

I just got this phone yesterday, it is AWESOME! I love the colours. When you receive an incoming call it shows a little video! I love this phone! It's even louder than my k750i too!

I have one & it really is a cool phone, destined like my old Motorola A1200 for cult status, at least here in the UK. The pictures & videos do not do this phone justice, if you see it in the flesh, you will want it. The lighting effects, external design & menus are beautifully done & look stunning.
I don't know which networks will offer the S500i officially (mine was from Hong Kong) but no doubt they will place their own branding all over it & destroy the phone in the process. Buy it unlocked & enjoy something different.
By the way, I have a Nokia N95 as a free upgrade. What a joke. It's a badly built brick with lousy interface, buggy applications & the GPS is continually dropping out. It tries to do everything & ends up like most converged devices, bad. View the S500i as the anti N95.
