Everything about this phone is amazing, if you take the time to actually get used to it first, it looks cool, & I especially love the fact you can security pass everything or certain applications etc.
One problem I desperately need help with. I've deleted a certain contact from my contacts list, but this contacts number is still as number 1 in my first 3 messaging list, I have now got to be really careful not to sent a text to this person, why after deleted contact & I've also reset the phone, & cleared memory is this number still there!
Please help anyone.

Well what can I say, had this phone for about 6 months now, didn't like it from the first day I got it, those dummy ones looked nice in phone shops, but may god, does the phone have a life of its own.
Haven't ended up ringing anyone but I am known for sending blank texts to a certain individual, the phone somehow unlocks itself, & the middle button (inside the ring) is the culprit in this, if you press it 9 times it sends of a text, & I have gone back to my phone where I have got like 4 to 5 sending notifications, AMAZING! The sending tone is also so low that you can't hear it if the phones located a half a meter from your ear.
Now, the battery, well compared to my previous (Samsung)phone its abysmal, & the charger doesn't stay in very well as well as there is no lock mechanism as with D900, so if your on the phone while it's charging, STAY VERY STILL! , & sometimes it doesn't give you a warning when the charger comes out & next minute your very best friend thinks you hung up on them.
Now the actual touch pad is still OK, but it's still hard to judge if the phones detected the touch or not, causing added frustration.
The actual phone, well the silvery layer on the facia started coming off like a month into me having it, & that's not because of wear & tear, actually the phone handles a fall from my hands onto the ground very well. The good side to the peeling is that the layer underneath is actually quite nice so when my phone finishes changing skin it will look nice again. But at the moment it looks really tatty.
Where do I finish, well the screen scratches quite easily & has a tendency to attract events which cause it.
I would say go for a different phone if your looking for a new phone.

Hi ya, I have a problem that has been bugging me for a while, & I am hoping someone can help me!
I have downloaded a couple of message tones, but can't save them as message tones as they don't appear in my sounds & ringtones setting when I try to save them. If I go into my sounds & ringtones file from the main menu, they are there, but not when you go into the phone profile section to change ringtones & message tones. Can anyone tell me how I can get them on the phone? I am not a great fan of the phone, originally wanted the U600, but Vodafone told me it was no longer available to existing customers! If I lived somewhere where I could get a signal with another provider, I would change!
Thanks Nikki :-).

I also have this phone on an 18 month contract with Vodafone, it won't charge & now the menu buttons don't work when I slide the screen up. I have to slide it half way & then access the menu. Vodafone don't want to know & Samsung are demanding too much to repair. Won't be buying Samsung again & after 9 years with Vodafone will be leaving them too.

Very unhappy owner of U700 problem is it won't recharge I have tried other peoples chargers & batteries to no avail Vodafone returned it Samsung for repair but it was returned saying it was damaged by the user & wanted £40 to repair it. Vodafone shop in Blackpool said they have had several back with same problem but they say they can't or won't do anything for me, I got the phone last August on 18 month contract I am now paying for a phone that I can't use, I am having to use a friends spare phone for now I need a phone for my job as a nurse. I won't be renewing my contract with Vodafone who I have been with for nearly ten years or buying Samsung phones who I feel should acknowledge there is a manufacture fault with this model.

Never used this phone but come on its supposed to be an UPGRADE from the U600 & it's hardly done very well, the camera is worse on this one & it looks only a little different so out of 100% I would say 59%. I am getting a phone soon but definitely not this one.

Absolute Rubbish, I have had two other Samsung phones that I loved, this one is just rubbish, the touch sensitive keys don't work or cut of the call in mid sentence the wheel has packed up. The worse thing is tied to a contract & can't renew till next year!

This is my first Samsung phone & I have been using it for about 2 months now with no problems. It is a very stylish phone with lots of great features. I have had no problems with the touch display (you can actually adjust the sensitivity), though it took me about 3 days to get used to it. I bought a full body screen protector designed for U700 for protection & to prevent the silver from peeling off. No signs of flaking or peeling so far on my phone.
For those who find sending text messages to be irritating because of having to push too many buttons, you can always use the shortcut feature to access the text message screen with just a single click. The only downside to this phone is the volume when playing music files, without the headset, it is not loud enough to hear when you are in crowded & noisy areas. I did find a solution to this by amplifying my MP3s using the wave pad.
Overall, it is a great phone. It excels from design to features & performance! I simply love it!

Had this phone 8 months, third Samsung (I should have known better) just as rubbish as the previous two. Silver coating peeling off facia, & now soft touch buttons have packed up completely, plus Vodafone don't give a monkeys, even though I spend a fortune with then each month, & have done for the last 8 years. So it's goodbye from Samsung & it's goodbye to Vodafone, not a very funny double act at all!

I love the look of this phone.
I got it on Vodafone. With the rubbish Vodafone live menu on it. I am currently having it flashed to return it to its original Samsung menu & features. Hopefully it will be nice & colourful inside the menu then, like the E900.
A little disappointed that it has no vivid text as this was nice feature on e900 & u600.
Mine is silver, no signs of peeling or chipping yet.
Top left button sometimes doesn't work, as someone else mentions here, but other than that. LOVE IT!
MINE doesn't PHONE ON ITS OWN. IT LOCKS WHEN I SLIDE IT CLOSED. SO NOT SURE WHY OTHER PEOPLE HAVING THIS PROBLEM.
FREE UPGRADE. Can't GO WRONG!

This phone is of excellent standard. I am highly pleased with what was delivered to my door step. I was fairly amused to find that my phone had come complete with a camera on the front. This enables video call to any other Samsung U700 user. I do hope that if you decide to choose this phone that you have as much satisfaction with it as I did. Many of the features are the same as Samsung U600 but they are slightly more modern & useful. The phone has a variety of options to choose on the main menu & you can adapt the display widely. If you choose this phone I hope that it is right for you. Good luck & Best wishes Natalie.

I am very disappointed with this Samsung u700 phone which I bought my daughter for Christmas at a cost of 270 Euro's. It simply wouldn't charge. I brought it back to the shop & they sent it off to Vodafone & I have been told that the charger port was damaged by my daughter & that the manufacturer's warranty does not cover it. I was asked for 80 Euro's to repair it! I have asked for the phone to be returned unrepaired. Who does Vodafone think they are? I am extremely mad at them as I found it hard to pay for the phone in the first place (Christmas & all that). Nice to know in one respect that there are others suffering. Good luck to you all but DO NOT BUY A SAMSUNG U700 MOBILE PHONE!

Newly purchased U700V silver (Vodafone firmware), found that it was very easy to get used to (familiar with VF interface). All contact details from my original sim card were put into the correct order as expected. Only took a couple of times to really get confident using this delightfully attractive phone. Bought a 1GB micro SD card with SD size adaptor from the Carephone Warehouse (£9.95).
My last phone was a Motorola L6 (bad signal, reason for changing phone) with 640x camera mode. However, after printing (via Boots self service) one of the pictures from the Motorola L6 (inside dim lighting shot), came out quite good (6x4). I can imagine that using this Samsung 3.2M'pixel (highest resolution) will be a dream upon printing!
Overall the U700V, good easy firmware, slim design, clean, attractive & simple beauty. This phone would have been delivered without a complicated birth!
Q. How did you arrive at buying this phone?
A. I spent most of the day (12th Feb) reading a lot of posted comments, & there is a lot! I also read about other similar phones & the technology on the high end ones (G800, Iphone, Viewty etc.) My conclusion is that there will always be good & bad reviews, experiences where technology is concerned. People do size up & overly expect their newly purchased phone to be unparalleled in comparison to others.
Q. Any problems with this 'phone?
A. Only the right soft key. Found that I was making calls to a friend by too much muddled finger movements around the right hand key. I soon started to watch where I placed my operating finger LOL. Also, the VF Live soft touch key was a nuisance, especially on closing the phone. I now hold the phone higher on the screen to close. This has removed this temporary irritant.
Conclusion - For £130, a good all-round phone!
Would certainly recommend it to anybody.

Way too many wingers out there. I got the phone as a free upgrade & was nervous as I am usually a Nokia fan as I find them easier to use. But this phone has totally proved me wrong! The PC software is also really easy to use. Whether connected with USB provided or with a Bluetooth dongle & the camera is great!
OK. Answers to too many complaints:
If you don't like the wheel, just use it like a D-pad.
If your cheek keeps hitting the buttons, just hold it straight down from your ear. It has a built in microphone that work about 6 inches from your mouth so you don't have to kiss it! Or there is speakerphone!
Plus, just make it lock when the slide is down. No way will it ever go off in your pocket now! You have to press the middle blue button 3 times to unlock. Not going to happen unless you mean it!
Secondly, taking ages to write a text? Just press left & it goes to create a text message straight away. Muppets. Just as quick to reply or send as with the Nokia. Like how it remembers your last contacts you texted.
Problems with media player sound? OK, my old Nokia had stereo sound & I thought at first that U700 was quiet, but just press up on the volume on the side while your song is playing. You will find it doubles the sound from the default setting. Bit tinny, but its 12mm wide! It hasn't got a sub woofer in it!
For people struggling to put video on it. Download a free converter & remember it records videos in inf. Format (something like that) & not mp4.
Mine is a Vodafone upgrade but has no Vodafone live or anything else written on it or any changes to the operating system.
The phones aesthetics have changed since the photos above & looks much better with power button on the top & more silver looks. Also, don't hear of any issues with it crashing & not turning on anymore, so they must have sorted that problem.
Also, can people not give the phone a poor rating just because your service provider is a little late in delivering it?
Only problem is lack of a radio. But who needs that with a 2GB MicroSD card & your favourite music?
In summary, a good phone that most people like & are happy with. Usually just the technophobe few that are too quick to judge & can't work out how to change settings. Good Phone.

Have had this phone for a week now, & it looks really stylish although a little complicated to work out but I think I've got there now. Just one thing though can anyone tell me why I keep getting a text message saying (50) then the date then 5B & sometimes it has a percentage sign on the screen as well. I try to delete but it just keeps popping up again. Has it got something to do with the New broadcast 50 that is written on the opening screen & if so what on earth does this mean, hope I am not being really blonde with this question!

This is actually a very hot phone. My dad got it for me 2 days ago & I LOVE it. But the touch sensitive buttons kind of need get using to, but it still rocks. I just love all its features. Well, maybe the MP3 isn't very loud. I tried playing Please Don't Stop the Music during a very busy place & it was hard to hear. But then again, the headsets are pretty loud =D.
About the colours, well, my friend has the black one I got the silver one. All of my other friends say that the silver is hotter & feminine. No offense to my friend but I would see a guy holding a black SAMSUNG U700.
Anyway this is a really good phone. But I don't know how you change the texting sound. I can't hear it.

Beware! This is my second U700 the first went back within 5 weeks due to random calling & texting of people when phone lock on? Apparently the chip was contaminated? Vodafone thanks a lot. Received same phone again apparently not able to change phones after 30 days even when faulty? Had this phone for over 5 months now & it spends most time locked away as best place for it.
Phone sends blank texts to random people from contact list? Phone so sensitive it cuts out when placed towards ear? Phone has mind of its own & calls people when it on the side? Something dodgy here so don't think it's a one off as heard some customers complaining about this phone in the Vodafone shop or was that just about the customer lack of service.

Do not buy this phone! It has only lasted me 7 weeks & now died. Not good value for £195.00! It would not charge for 2 days & then turned itself off, never to work again. It has been returned to Samsung & they have now informed me that they cannot repair it unless I pay £94.00 because the damage is not covered under warranty! What a joke! Apparently the damage could have been caused by my phone being in my pocket or handbag? Surely that is where most people keep their phones? My third Samsung phone in a year & a half, doesn't say much for their company!

I have had this phone for 3 months now & I love it! Previously I had the Nokia 7373 which I loved & was worried that Samsung could top it as I am used to Nokia's & wasn't sure about the touch sensitive buttons but they work perfectly. The U700 is amazing so light, slim & sleek looking. The USB works perfectly so all of my favourite tunes are on my phone. The camera is fabulous & has so many features! The paint hasn't even began peeling off even scratched you people must work on building sights of something.
The only thing I would possibly ask for is the MP3 volume to be a little louder but that doesn't mean it's naff it's just because my Nokia was pretty loud. If you're on the fence about buying this phone then I would 100% recommend it to anyone!

I have owned many phones seeing I am involved in the industry & this is one of the best lookers out there. I can't understand the paint coming off as I have dropped mine a few times & nothing happened. I love this phone to bits so far. What's the limited music player rubbish what features are you people missing? It skips track has FF RW shuffle & repeat all you need to listen to music.
The only gripes I have about this phone is the loudness when not using headphones to hear music & if you have a fat face like mine the touch buttons can sometimes hold or end calls by rubbing against your cheek. Also about your Internet not working this is something SP related it's mostly settings. Now as for the phone being hard to use. Wake up! The envelope is mail. The phone book is. Errrr. The phone book need I say more.

My first Samsung phone & I am loving it! I've hear many complains about paint chipping off. But this is common, it happens to every other brand. Paint is known to fade or chip off especially with metallic coating. I've used Nokia & Sony Ericsson yet I haven't had a phone without such problem. I wonder why in this case it's been overly highlighted & great phone condemned worthless because of a so very common flaw. But Samsung have since release a new improved version, users can claim it under warranty. But if I am not mistaken it can only be done once. That is good enough for me, Nokia & Sony Ericsson wouldn't even allow it. I'll have to pay about $100 just to change the case. A part from the paint it's a nice phone with lots of functions & about every other things one would look for in a phone. But there is no radio & IR, a real disappointment.
This phone features mostly touch sensitive button so users beware. It'll take time to get used to it. It can be annoying, you'll have to change the way you handle a phone. I am getting used to it now. I am eager to see what Samsung have to come up next. Samsung is surely on my list in my next buy.

Whatever you do, DO NOT BUY THIS VERY EXPENSIVE PIECE OF RUBBISH. This is my 3rd U700 in one month. I got the phone on upgrade from Vodacom. I WISH I COULD HAVE MY D600E BACK BUT SAMSUNG DON'T MAKE IT ANYMORE. This is by far the worst mobile I've ever had. Apart from the chrome coming off, the music player has NO volume whatsoever. The phone often has a mind of its own, the ring tone & message alert tone is way too soft & user friendly doesn't exist. As for the manual, Samsung spent a lot of money telling you nothing, unfortunately poor show from Samsung.

The phone has a lot of features that I can not deny, it's also sleek. The price for all this is tempting if not luring. In the end you get what you pay for, if it's at all good for anything I guess the price would have been higher. I am getting a Nokia n95.

- Can't use your own message ring tone apart from a few rubbish ones which are already on.
- Can't view pictures in landscape mode.
- Memory card takes about 3 weeks to initialise after turning phone on.
- The headphones which come with it are rubbish, had to buy some more & an adaptor.
- Sound quality through the speaker is very tinny.
- Media player has very limited functionality.
- Vodafone branding is rubbish, they took the radio off too.
- Don't know if it's the phone but the Vodafone signal is worse than any other network I've used & I've used them all including 3.
- If you keep it in your pocket for a long time it makes your parts ache.
It looks OK in silver & seems pretty well made, nice vibrant screen, but won't be getting another Samsung or Vodafone phone again.

I would just like to know how I can play videos which I have from my computer. The phone tells me that the Resolution is unsupported. I have tried to crop the video to 240x320 but the Samsung program does not let me do this.
Does anyone know how to play video Mp4 file on the phone?

I love this phone! I got it for Christmas & it seems to be a very good phone.
GOOD POINTS:
- Camera is very good. It has a camera on the front & the back so it takes very nice pictures.
- Scroll button in the middle is a little annoying at first but you get used to it.
- It has many things to do on this phone you use it a lot.
- Its big so you can see the screen very well.
BAD PONTS:
- My internet doesn't seem to work, but I don't know if other peoples does work.
- Sound isn't the best, quite crackly.
- When you're typing in a new contact & when you put the first number it doesn't always come up the first time.
- The top left hand button doesn't always work at first.
Overall it is a good phone, better than a lot on the market. It's cheap as well. So don't buy old phones as there a lot worse, BUY THIS PHONE!

Okay, I have had this phone for a couple of weeks now & I love everything apart from the battery life & the Vodafone firmware.
Firstly, don't buy this on Vodafone, they deleted all the useful parts of the Samsung software, changed the theme to their rubbish little Vodafone live one & then deleted all the wallpapers & games, replacing the games with demos.
Next all the people moaning about making calls when it's in your pocket, mine automatically locks when I slide it down, & that was a default setting so not sure what's happening there.
Also, the touch keys aren't too sensitive for me. The battery life is also pretty poor, I charge it all morning, unplug it in the afternoon & when I wake up the next morning its dead. I spoke to the Vodafone people & they said it was my fault somehow, so I am taking it back to the Vodafone store & going to ask them to replace the battery. I have a contract phone with Vodafone as well as this pay as you go one, along with my brother & girlfriend, & I'll never be buying another one again from Vodafone.
Vodafone customer service seems to be awful, the call center people seem to be rude & impatient, & they talk to you as if you are an uneducated person.
In short, I would not recommend buying this phone or any other phone from Vodafone. Apart from the things Vodafone have changed, this is a great phone.

Touch pad is not always sensitive when you want it to be, but is when you don't want it to be, often accidentally connect to the Internet or make video calls when I don't mean too. You cannot change these shortcuts but I think Samsung should allow you to.
I got the phone in black so it being too shiny or full of fingerprints is not an issue. It looks great & after a while you will get use to using it.

Does anybody know if you can turn the volume up any higher when listening to music because it seems very quiet compared to other phones I have used. If so how? Also, what is 3D sound & how do you turn it on? Help please!
Is it possible to set one of your own songs that you've put on the phone as an alarm tone? If so how do you do it?

This phone is the best, I love the style & slimness of it. I've only got it about 2 days but I already love it. I thought the touch screen would be annoying but it's easy to work & very stylish. The camera is clear & it has loads of features I was I bit disappointed when I got it but its so easy to work & soooooo much better than the last phone I got, I think everyone should buy it, its the best.

I just bought my two days ago, it was an impulse buy but so far, I am pretty satisfied with it. Perhaps not overwhelming wowed by it since I still had to get used to it, being a Nokia user for years.
It's definitely stylish & looks very sleek & clean. True, fingerprints get all over it, but that shouldn't really be a problem. The touch sensitive keys are really sensitive, though. At first I was cursing it, but once you've gotten used to it, it's really OK.
Another thing that people gripe about is how the screen is hard to read in sunlight or any kind of bright light. I've used it outdoors at noontime & I can read the screen perfectly.
Everything else I have to say about the U700 has been mentioned by everyone else, so I'll just leave it at that. My opinion is that the U700's functionally way above average as it is very stylish.
TIP. I discovered this by accident, after typing your reply to an SMS, just click on the top volume button to automatically put the recipient's name on the TO field.

A really good looking phone but very difficult to use. Response times are slow. Menu is complicated & you have to go through about 5 menus before you can just send a text. Camera is good but again, slow. The worst thing by far is the touch screen buttons, SO annoying! There are too many & because the voice call one is so close to the answering a call one, I was constantly voice calling people instead of just being able to make a normal phone call. This phone is irritating & slow. Very hard to use.

A phone is a phone. If you want to use it to text suggest you get a cheaper one. For camera, never rely on a phone camera, use a real camera.
For sounds, the phone player is only an added feature. If not happy with this feature get an IPod.
Video, not happy with this phone then get a camcorder.
A lot of people are harping about this, that & whatever forgetting that this is first & foremost a TELEPHONE. It is supposed to be used to call & talk. The other things that it can do are just bonus, built-in by the manufacturer to lure buyers.
Maybe one day someone will take a snipe that this phone goes only a few miles per gallon.
Over-all I rate this unit as a very good one.

HOW TO ADJUST the VOLUME OF YOUR RINGTONES.
OK, now a lot of you on here are complaining about soft ringtones on this u700 phone, you can't hear people ringing you etc etc. There is a way to fix this, & I can't believe someone hasn't posted this up already. There is a Microsoft utility called wavepad that will amplify the volume of your MP3 files. What you do is select the MP3 you want & right click, select the option saying wavepad install. So install it. Once it's installed, it's easy to use.
1. Open your wav, MP3 or whatever file, it doesn't matter, & let it start playing.
2. Go to effects -> amplify.
3. Select your amplify gain. I chose 400% for mine, & it was the loudest I could get without distortion for the u700
4. Save that to a file with a slightly different name like mysong_ringtone
5. Put it on your phone.
One thing you should know, it will increase your ringtone file size considerably. So if you want to cut it down to like the first minute or so (which is about all you need to use it as a ringtone anyway), use the cut & paste method to make a true ringtone out of it. But don't overwrite your original file! Save it under another but similar name because you may want the full length MP3 to listen to on jukebox on those boring afternoons at work when you've got nothing else to do.
So here we go. Cutting & pasting a ringtone.
This is a bit tricky so stay with me. Open up your original (& now amplified) file. The sound emulation graph will appear, showing you what your file looks like in sound/ graphical form. It looks just like an earthquake to me but anyway it will show you where you are in your cutting & pasting of songs. Now the reason this is important is that the u700 only has about 40MB of memory, meaning that after you've enhanced your songs to be heard on loudspeaker, you can only fit like 2 on there for ringtones before you run out of memory. For some dumb reason, they won't let you select a ringtone from your memory card, it has to actually be from the phone itself. The way round this is to cut your sound files down to size, ideally the first minute of the song. Usually that's enough to make a ringtone.
So here we go.
Your file should be opened. You need to move your pointer over the music graph, starting from the left hand side, SLOWLY until the pointer changes from a double headed horizontal arrow to the familiar north west pointing arrow. When this happens, click the left mouse button, drag to the right until you have selected the first minute of your song. Then right click to copy this selection.
Once you've done that go up to file -> new file. It will throw a pop up asking for sample rate & channels. Select stereo for channels & then click OK. A new box will appear title 'untitled1'. Right click & select paste. The sound clip you pasted will begin playing immediately. Hit the X button (the red one with the X at the top right of the box & it will say 'save changes to untitled1? '. Select yes & give it a name like mysong_ringtone.MP3 & make sure you save it as MP3 in the 'save as type:' selection box. Save it to your desktop so you can easily find it.
Now that you have an amplified & shortened down version of your song its time to put it on your phone. Either use wireless Bluetooth to do this or save it to your memory card & plug that into your phone.
After that, it's now your official ringtone. If you have any problems or if I've made any errors in my walkthrough, please post.
Enjoy your ringtones everyone, hope this helps.

A great deal of negativity that probably stems from many people failing to read the manual or did they buy them from someone in the pub. It's a fantastic piece of kit that's extremely capable of handling all your call needs & more. For the people out there struggling with this very clever phone I think you would probably be better sticking to the one that comes in the red box at the side of the road. Enjoy its brilliant.

Hey I've read a lot of these reviews & I am really surprised by what I've seen! I got the Samsung U700 recently & think it looks gorgeous, is simple to use & has great features! I can't understand how the touch sensitive keys could be causing any problem whatsoever! I probably should point out that my last phone was also a Samsung so I knew how to work this one when I got it. One of the reasons I chose Samsung again was so that I wouldn't have to adjust to using a new type of phone. I'd really recommend it anyway! The only thing I'd fault is the video quality which isn't great but the camera takes great pictures!

After trawling through the reviews on this site & owning this phone for nearly three months, I thought I'd clear up a few common misconceptions people seem to have about it. I've previously owned & used a wide range of phones from really basic Nokia 3210's right up to PDA Smartphone's such as the Qtek 2020i & Glofiish X500, so I feel able to judge this phone in a reasonably experienced manner.
Design & function.
Having owned a Nokia 8810 many years ago I thought I'd try out Samsung's modern day equivalent must have fashion accessory. I expected the build quality to be at least on par with what is now 7 to 8 year old mobile technology, but sadly this doesn't seem to be the case. My U700 has so far led a much pampered life, kept in its own separate protective soft pouch, but somehow the chrome plating has still started to wear from the top corners of the phone. Samsung really do seem to have taken cost cutting to a whole new level as the chrome plate is quite possibly the thinnest I've ever seen. Not good at all from a longevity point of view. The phone's slide mechanism has started to show signs of wear & rattles when you hold one of its halves & shake it, & I am not a particularly heavy phone user either. This yet again brings its long term reliability into question.
Battery.
Battery life is such a grey area to review, as everyone uses their phones differently. However, I've had days where the phone has been pretty much unused & sat in standby a lot only being used for the occasional quick call or text, & on these occasions the phone has lasted for nearly three whole days before needing a recharge. In contrast, on the days when it's had a heavier usage this falls to just over a day. Not unexpected for a phone so thin, as this seems to be the restricting factor when it comes to endurance tests. If you use it a lot then you'll have to charge it a lot, simple as that.
Connectivity.
This is probably where the rumours about the volume control started. If your going to use this phone as a music playing device then you'll need to buy an aftermarket headset, be it stereo Bluetooth or hardwired you will need one with an external volume control, as the headset supplied from the factory has an L shaped plug that covers up the phones volume control when plugged in, making it impossible to adjust in use. What were you thinking here Samsung?
The touch keys.
Most reviews seem to hate this feature, but it's really just a matter of understanding how to use them. They DO NOT operate during a call unless you deactivate the key lock. Why you would need to do this is beyond me, as you simply slide the phone open or slide it closed to answer or hang up the call. All buttons except the volume control are locked out during a call unless you tell it otherwise. When scrolling through the menu's the touch keys take quite a bit of getting used to, but doesn't any new feature on a new phone when you first get it? Personally I have more problems using the numeric keypad to send a text than I do with the touch keys. The scroll wheel is a bit of a useless feature, as unless you have very small fingers then 9 times out of 10 you invariably hit one of the touch keys whilst trying to scroll the wheel. Probably another cause for the touch keys are useless rumours. You don't have to use the scroll wheel, just use it as a 4 way directional key as fitted to other phones.
Firmware & general usage.
When I got my phone it came with the Vodafone branded firmware. After using the phone with this for a couple of days I decided it had to go, as there were so many niggling restrictive bugs in it. So after a bit of research through a certain popular search engine I found out how to re flash the phones firmware myself. I am not going to tell you how as I don't want to be responsible for any inexperienced users making their phones into expensive paperweights. However, it IS easy to do in your own home, costs nothing & makes a world of difference to the phones functionality.
The thing that annoys me most about Samsungs firmware is the fact you can only use midi files as text message alerts. You can use MP3's as ringtones but not as text alerts. Maybe there's been a firmware revision to include this since I re flashed it, I don't know.
Text messaging.
There seems to be a lot of people complaining about how hard it is to send a text, & this is simply untrue. Here is how I do it, & if this is hard or longwinded then you must be pretty lazy! I've set up a shortcut on the left hand arrow key (scroll wheel) to put me straight into the create message screen. So that's ONE key press before you actually start typing the text. Enter the main body of the text, whatever it may be, then press the down arrow ONCE to highlight the recipient name box. Press the centre of the scroll wheel to bring up the submenu. Now, at the top of this menu should be the names of the last three contacts you sent a message to. If you want use one of those then just highlight that name, OK it, then hit the centre button again & select option 4 to send (you can press button 4 on the keypad if your really lazy). If you have more than 3 regular recipients you can set up a total of 10 common recipients if you wish (option 6 in the submenu), or alternatively you can choose from your phonebook list (option 4). In reality this is no harder than ANY other phone I've used, & I don't see what people's problems are with this at all. Replying to a saved message is even easier, so I don't understand at all.
Camera.
I only have one real issue with the camera. It's a half decent phone camera, & as long as you don't expect studio quality shots from it then you'll get along fine. After all, this is a mobile phone not a dedicated camera. BUT, the phones LED flash ONLY operates when you press the shutter key to actually take the photo, it doesn't work in preview mode, something EVERY other phone I've had does. A bit of a letdown if you ask me. The autofocus works fine, if you know how to use it. The shutter key is a two stage key & you half press it & wait for the square in the centre of the viewfinder to turn green before you're fully press it. Just the same as most Sony Ericsson's I've had.
All in all it has its flaws, but build quality issues & Vodafone branding aside I feel most of the problems are from users expecting too much from it, or from expecting it to function in exactly the same way as their previous phone. A full screen preview of pictures would be a useful addition when browsing from the file manager, but hey at the end of the day this is intended as a fashionable phone with a few decent features NOT a multifunctional all singing all dancing media device, & that's where I feel people are going wrong.
