I think that I have a different phone to some others. I was put off by reviews but saw an offer for unlocked phone, with Orange PAYG sim Inc P&P for £35 so decided to give it a punt. I could not have been more surprised & pleased. I have fairly fat fingers but find no problems with keypad. I get less missed characters than I did with my old 820. But then I don't speed text.

Some say that you can't open it easier. Well, I have very short finger nails yet it took me all of about 5 minutes to develop a technique to open & to close the phone with one hand.

I don't find the ring or the speech volume too low, but do find that the range of volume from quietest to loudest is not great. But then I hate phones that disturb the whole pub when they ring. I can hear it fine (maybe I just don't go to noisy pubs).

Any faults? Well, I would prefer a plain LCD on the front with more info, but this one is acceptable. I would prefer rising volume on ringtone, but not many phones do this. I would prefer ring & vibrate together or ring then vibrate, but it's not a big issue for me. Ideally, it would be quad band.

Battery life? Fine for me, but I have a life outside talking on the phone. It's not a hobby for me.

The best bits? Stunning looks, small size, has everything I need, good screen.

Ian.

I've had this phone for just 4 months & it broke. I was really satisfied with it. The features (it even has the emergency sms when you press the volume button continuously while the phone is closed), the image quality (2megapixels only but the image quality is very good when you have it printed), looks (mine was the red one & it looked so nice) & I really loved the keypad (quiet when typing he-he-he).

The display just went out on me but when I used its TV out, I can access everything. I had it checked by Samsung's tech & said it's the flex/LCD. They replaced it but still no display : (then they said it's the board. I was really depressed because the phone was perfect. I was probably just unlucky & got a lemon.

I've had this phone for 1yr & 1 month now, yes the sound isn't great, & it could do with a flash, apart from that it's the best phone I've had, the keypad just needs time to get bedded in, then its fine, its an easy phone to use, has easy to navigate functions & looks A1.I'd have another one anytime, & it's the first phone I've said that about. Mine's over a year old gets used for texting mercilessly everyday, & still looks brand new, good solid case, great clear screen. No complaints from me.

This is the worst phone I have ever had. Texting is a nightmare & takes forever & the battery is so rubbish. One minute you have battery then it just dies no warning. It needs so much charging up which is a real pain.

Give me a Nokia any time.

I've had this phone for over 4 months now & I am STILL having a difficult time with the buttons, especially when texting, using the predictive text function helps tons, except that your messages end up being so much longer. Love the look, & I can finally say I have a phone that I can TRULY slip into my shirt pocket, which was the main reason I shifted to this phone anyway. LOVE the clamshell.

It's light weight makes it perfect as an MP3 player too. Incidentally, I like the '3d sound' setting when using the MP3 outdoors; gives you a sense that the music isn't really booming from your headset but from 'out there somewhere'. The headset could use a lot of improvement though; ear buds keep popping off & the way the wires drape around your neck isn't too flattering.

HATE the speaker; the sound it makes is SO tinny, & when you set music as a ringtone, sounds like an old mono AM radio.

Finally, you'd think Samsung would give you more warning that you're battery's running low; there's hardly any time from the moment the battery indicator bars go from 2 bars left to 'warning', then to complete shutdown. Must. Have. More. Time! :)

This phone is really good. I've only had it for a few days now but I love it. The design is the best ever, & when I was getting it I wasn't sure whether to get this or a Motorola RAZR V3I but this definitely more features than the RAZR & it looks nicer, & it has a nicer layout on the inside.

Other reviews said it was really hard to text on but it isn't, it's just different. You get used to it.

BUY THIS PHONE.

Phone looks great & then you open it. What a dog's dinner inside the clamshell. It's difficult to open, long nails help, once inside the menu is not intuitive & the buttons ARE a nightmare. You just don't feel as though you have pressed the key, there is a time delay between pressing & it appearing on the screen & the screen/display. Dreadful. This is a phone so I am not worried about the cups of tea it can make nor about the picture quality. Bizarrely if I want to take a photo I use a camera. Novel idea I know but. The sound quality as reported by people I am talking to is appalling & sounds as though I am in an aircraft hangar with a jet behind me. The tinny speaker in the phone reverberates & distorts all voices. In short this phone is substandard.

A very classy phone indeed. Like anything new you need to get used to it. The key pad takes some getting used to, but after a while it is easy to use to. Very good, clever design features. Big screen, & very bright colours. There also is some very smart blue text on the small screen (when the clamshell is closed).

My major gripe is that there is no autofocus or flash on what otherwise would be an amazing camera phone. Battery life has been very good for me. Its multimedia handling is not as good as my Sony Ericsson w800i I.e.: easy transfer of files from one phone to another. For example I was unable to transfer some pics from my w800i to my d830 for no apparent reason, but strangely videos & MP3 went across no problem!?

Speaker quality is pretty good, & IS loud enough unless you want to burst a couple of eardrums via your head phones.

A very unique phone. So much so my wife has got one now too!

Hi. Just got this phone 2day so still away to go yet. But so far I find it a very good looking phone. It's well made & not as flimsy as people are making out. The screen is great. & the keypad isn't really a problem. Its not how hard you press but where. You can actually feel the button under the pad which is good. As for annoying keypad tones as mentioned before. I don't think they are. But turn them off or change them. The picture quality is very good as good as my d600 easily. & sound wise I am a bit disappointed it's very slightly quieter than my d600. If you want loud get an e900. My nephews overpowers the d600 easily. All in all a very stylish classy looking phone. Not a lot of people have this so it different. The finish is cool too. So no greasy print marks like on d600 d900 & so on. I hope this has been helpful. & like I say early days yet so will update as time goes on. Thnx

This phone looks good & has a good camera & screen. The phone however has very annoying keypad tones. The touchpad buttons are absolutely terrible. It takes about half an hour to write a text as you have to keep going back & deleting mistakes cause by these ridiculous buttons. I have only had the phone for 3 days & I am already sending it back. If you ever send texts don't get this phone, its rubbish.

I got the d830 as an upgrade & it's the third one I have had. First one much to quiet could not ear it at all. Second one the Bluetooth stayed connected to who ever I had phoned or would just cut off from the ear piece for no reason I have tried 3 different head sets & now Orange have sent me another & guess what yes you've got it this one is just as rubbish. The V3i was much better so if you want good Bluetooth to headset don't bother!

Hi there folks,

Well I am taken by the New Ultra Edition that has recently been brought out by Samsung, yes the Ultra Slim Edition look great but even more importantly they are really easy to use. The Samsung D830 is my favourite ultra slim edition phone as it's a clamshell design with top notch features.

So slim only measures 9.9 mm, which is exactly the right measurements & this phone will take some beating. Believe me. Buy one for Christmas for yourself & for others.

This is the second Samsung phone I've bought since the now-defunct R220 which I used to own more than 5 years ago, so I was hoping to see some major improvements in the D830.

First, the good points. The phone's ultra slim design is definitely a plus - its light, fits in any pocket, & the streamlined shape looks really classy compared to the old head-bangers which used to have an antenna sticking out the top.

The large screen is mighty impressive, producing very clear & crisp images. The sound quality is excellent. The camera function works well, though I seldom have any use for it. The touchpad is a nice idea, but it isn't very sensitive so it takes a little longer to key in a text message compared to other phones with normal buttons.

Despite Samsung's cutting edge design for this model, it seems that it has yet to catch up with Nokia in terms of functionality. The menu layout has improved somewhat, but still requires the user to scroll through a great deal of menus before being able to adjust a particular setting. I often find myself getting lost in the process.

Lack of flexibility is still a big issue - for example, the dialing display only offers three font types, all of which look quite cumbersome when displayed on the screen. Also, not much autonomy is given in allowing the personalizing of file organization - do we really need separate folders for downloaded songs & favorite songs, & why can't I rename or reorganize these folders the same way a Nokia phone would allow me to?

The sound, despite being clear in its quality, is usually not audible enough unless you're using the headset. This is a big problem if you're not in a quiet place, as the risk of missing a phone call is rather high. Then again, I've yet to find a phone that doesn't have this problem.

Finally, this phone is far from hardy. While it looks elegant & sophisticated, it's actually quite flimsy. For instance, my battery cover is so loose that tapping my phone on the table dislodges the cover completely. The tiny covers for the adapter/headset jack & memory card slot look as though they would fall off, or worse, melt after some time. (This actually happened to my R220 after I kept in my drawer for a few months) The battery life is also not fantastic.

Overall, the phone isn't all that bad, but I'll probably still need some time to get used to it even though I've owned a Samsung before. It's definitely not designed for heavy usage, & I would recommend it for people who don't mind sacrificing functionality for style.

The design of this phone is great, it looks fantastic & the fact that its only 9.9mm thick is really impressive. However, I have just started using one & I'm struggling. Part of this could be that I have always been a fan of Nokia's & their styling & menus. This phone is most definitely NOT for anyone that sends text messages frequently. In my opinion it isn't as diverse as the Nokia 6230i, when you compare the two handsets their features look similar but the Nokia has a lot of nicer little extras, like changing the phones colour theme (the Samsung only offers black or white). The Samsungs text messaging font is huge on the smallest setting, something which I personally hate. When you dial a number the digits are so big that a basic phone number doesn't fit on one line - it looks sloppy. The keytones are loud, childish & irritating. More importantly for me, the ringing volume for an incoming call is dire. On full volume (level 7) I can barely hear the phone when it's in my pocket. Should you wish to upload your own mp3 ringtone the sound is even quieter, I've missed three phone calls because of it today already. The 2 megapixel camera has complicated settings, & is practically incapable of taking a good picture indoors in artificial lighting. It is extremely difficult to get it to take a clear picture, the slightest little movement & the image is ruined. It is also very slow to open & browse through images. The keypad takes a lot of effort to use, you have to concentrate hard on what you're pressing & how hard you're pressing it because the keys don't click, & they're touchpad style. This is a nice idea in theory but it's extremely impractical when you're trying to dial a phone number quickly & it ends up entering the same number 3 times because you've pressed the key a little too hard. You can't alter the sensitivity. The screen is great, the graphics are good, the music player is nice & the video recorder is also of a high quality. As far as I am concerned Samsung have created a professional looking phone with extremely bulky & childish features, if you are someone that relies on your phone for all day every day use I strongly suggest you look for something else. Sorry Samsung!

My boyfriend Shawn has had the D830 for a while & it's a really good phone. I have the Motorola Razr V3 & we have been comparing the phones on every each & every feature. We finally agreed that the features on the Razr V3 are better quality. When it comes to usability the Samsung D830 wins in a big way. We found the D830 is easier to open but both phones have issues with the keyboards being hard to master. I could rattle on all afternoon but my point is I have to admit Shawn has picked a really nice phone.
