I've just taken out a 12 month contract on this phone. I did read all the negative reviews here but I thought since the phone has been out about 18 months now Nokia will have fixed all the bugs. (& it was cheap & I got a free Xbox, but I digress).

Generally the phone works OK although there is one large problem with it & I am sure quite a lot of people have experienced similar.

Even when the signal bar was full & it was connected to the network I had problems with the handset either making or receiving phone calls or sending & receiving texts on quite a regular basis.

This was an intermittent fault, occasionally I could make a phone call but most other times I got the error message 'Connection Error'. When sending a text message it would sit in the Outbox trying to send & then retrying.

I also wouldn't receive any calls then an hour or so later get alerted by Text to several missed calls & voicemail messages!

I called T Mobile technical support who suggested switching the network mode from Dual Mode to GSM, this can be found in Settings then Network Mode.

GSM Mode (or 2G) is the service where voice & SMS run, 3G is an extra layer which carries Video phone & high speed Internet functionality.

In GSM mode the essential features of my N73 now work perfectly, sending text messages very quickly & making & receiving phone calls without a problem, but in this mode 3G services don't work, you then have to manually switch it back to Dual Mode to use any 3G services such as Video calling & high speed mobile Internet.

Dual Mode is supposed to be automatic & transparent, switching between 3G mode & GSM mode where necessary to offer the best level of service. My old Sony Ericsson K800i had no problem doing this, but apparently Nokia cannot get this right.
I guess this is a Firmware problem but hopefully this should help out any people who are complaining of the operating system being slow when sending texts & not receiving incoming messages.

It's not too much of a problem to manually switch modes as it now means by doing this I have a phone that works, but really I should not have to. Nokia should have produced a device that just works, Sony Ericsson can do it.

Other than that the features are excellent, the handset is a bit flimsy but no worse than any other, there are a range of applications which you can download to the phone, the web browser is very easy to use & the latest version of PC Suite is a lot more reliable than it used to be.

On the downside the camera Flash is nowhere near as good as the one on the K800i. In low light the quality of a 3.2 mp image is noticeably poorer than a K800i equivalent.

In the daylight the Carl Zeiss lens takes great photos, but no better than the K800i.

Again this is a classic case of N-Series range & the Symbian operating system, & this lets down an entire range of units which would otherwise be the best on the market.

Had this phone for almost a year. Would recommend the phone to anyone. Camera, sound (3D effect) & usability is quite good. Had very few software problems such as switching off itself, otherwise it is as expected from a Nokia (quality stuff).

Like a lot of other people, I love this phone when it works. Camera very moody though & sometimes I just give up on it completely. It proved fairly reliable UNTIL I updated the software (as advised) & now its a normal Nokia smart phone. Turns it's self off, freezes & can't be trusted. Worst thing I ever did was update it.

Poor old Nokia, looking for a new phone now & your just not up to it.

I would agree with the bulk of comments on here. This is, without question, for a host of reasons already mentioned, the worst handset I have ever had the misfortune of owning, not helped by the fact my network operator, having all but acknowledged how bad this phone is, have refused to do anything about it. I have just come to the end of my 18 month contract & look forward to smashing this mobile to smithereens. I would dissuade anyone from even thinking of going anywhere near this handset.

My 18 month contract has come to an end today, & thank goodness. This phone looks great & you can store loads of info on it, but when you send a text it takes about 5 minutes before you can do anything else with it. It froze all the time which can only be solved by taking the battery out. My main course of frustration is when you have typed a long text out & it just turns itself off, it drove me mad! A great shame.

I have had this phone for no longer than 6 months, & I have to say I HATE IT!

I got this phone as a gift half way through my current contract & I honestly wished I'd kept my old one. Thank god I am due for an upgrade.

At the beginning it was great it did everything it was supposed to but now.

- the screen has scratches all over it.
- It Freezes all of the time.
- It turns itself off whenever it feels like it.
- I can no longer make phone calls because whenever I or the person rings I can never hear them & they can't hear me.
- It's incredibly slow.
- the secondary camera is terrible quality.
- & now the joystick has snapped off so I can't navigate easily.

If you are thinking about buying this phone, think again. My upgrade is due in a couple of days & I have to say this phone has quite put me off Nokia's all together.

Thanks for reading my review x.

I have had this phone since December & I have never liked it. The camera is good but temperamental & the Internet is pretty fast but that's about the best of it.

It's so slow! I don't fill my phone with junk, there is no music on it & only a few pictures but it's still slow. Everything takes forever. I hate the design of the keypad, I only have small hands but the buttons surrounding the keypad are a tremendous source of irritation when texting. Battery life is not good at all & it freezes up & has to be turned off & reset. Then I get 2 days worth of texts at once. Having been with the same network for years & never having this problem I can only assume it's the phone.

All in all has to me the most irritating phone I have ever owned & I will be very glad when my new mobile arrives tomorrow. Or I would be if I hadn't have read the terrible reviews about it!

I really wouldn't recommend it.

I've had this phone for 14 months now, first few months were fantastic after that problem after problem, might as well list them.

- the phone turns itself of randomly, during the middle of calls, when the key pads are unlocked, when trying to text.

- the phone freezes randomly again in any situation.

- the on & off button doesn't work so when the phone decides to turn off the only way to get it back on is to remove the battery!

- the connectivity to PC for upload of photos is very temperamental. Sometimes it works fines, others not. Tried it on lots of different PC's all the same.

- the screen has a white haze in the middle, no idea what it is.

I sent this phone away for repair & 2 weeks later was back to its usual self. I was told it was too do with software upgrading I tried all this, nothing works. It would be a good phone minus all the faults!

Can't wait to get rid.

I purchased handset 1 on contract from Vodafone in February 2007 & when this phone is actually working properly I love it, it has some great features & a brilliant camera. The only problem is it breaks or doesn't work. If your thinking of getting this phone, don't! I have also had a great deal of problems with Vodafone, but I am sure there are similar stories out there about other retailers & providers.

Handset 1, joystick button fell off, sent away for repair from the Vodafone shop on 28.06.07 & took nearly 6 weeks for a replacement refurbished handset to come back despite what the repair progress sheet still says BEING INSPECTED BY SERVICE TECHNICIAN.

Handset 2, joystick button fell off, sent away for repair from the Vodafone shop on 27.11.2007, replacement refurbished handset back in shop on 05.12.07. Repair sheet said A fully qualified technician diagnosed the fault on your phone, when tested, a fault was found on a component & part not listed above. This has been replaced or repaired to correct the fault on your phone. This is also untrue as this was a refurbished phone.

Handset 3, phone died & wouldn't recharge. Sent away from the Vodafone shop on 06.03.08, replacement refurbished handset back in shop on 08.03.08. This was another software problem.

Handset 4, couldn't receive a signal 95% of the time, although no network problems, also not charging properly. Told over the phone that it could be my SIM card, but tried another one & had the same problems. This was a software problem, sent away for repair from the Vodafone shop on 17.03.08, replacement refurbished handset, Back to shop on 20.03.08.

Handset 5, callers name not showing up. Phoned 191 on 29.04.08 to be hung up on twice, then spoke to an advisor that said he would arrange delivery of a replacement handset to be sent to my work address & that I would give the delivery person my current handset.

01.04.08 couldn't send email, but could send them, spent ½ hour in Vodafone shop checking the settings, all okay, software problem.

On the night of 01.04.08 I received an email to say that they could not replace the handset. The next day I took handset into the Vodafone shop & they sent this away.

Received the same handset back from shop at lunchtime on 10.04.08 by 17.30 hours it switched itself off & when I tried to switch it back on the screen said start up failed, please contact your retailer. The handset went back to the shop the following morning & I am waiting for its return or a replacement.

I also have a great deal of problems when I ring Vodafone, I get advisors that have no knowledge except for their script & when they realise they cannot answer my questions or I ask to speak to a supervisor or manager they hang up on me. I have written a letter of complaint & a Customer Relations advisor rang me & I was yet again hung up on having only said the words hello, yes & yes, so I couldn't have upset him. A few days later another customer Relations person rang me who said they had no record of anyone previously ringing me. This time they have taken me out of my contract length so that if I am not happy on the return of my handset I can upgrade. But to what? I hate slide phones & want all the features the N73 is supposed to have. Any ideas?

I am also at the moment borrowing a friend's old N73, when someone rings me the contact name does not come up & the custom ringtone I set goes back to the default Nokia tone.

This is a great phone & for all you retards out there having freezes, shutdowns etc stop filling it up with so much rubbish & keep the firmware up-to-date. Yes there are a few niggles with the phone, stop complaining & go update the phone.

P.S There's one poster complained about getting scratches on the screen etc, you must be careful with it it's made of plastic which yes does scratch, it's not made of titanium :s. So yeah great phone but all you complainers got to learn to look after it. Nuff said :).

I have had this phone for about 6 months & so far the experience has been a positive one. The phone is a good size & weight but feels a little flimsy, I am quite careful with my phones so this is not an issue but others might be wary. The joystick has been known to break off (thankfully never for me) & the body creaks a bit around the sides. Call quality is excellent with people on the other end saying I sounded very loud.

It's packed with features & the camera is great. I've always kept the firmware up-to-date so have had no issues with the phone crashing or slow menus or anything. The camera can take great daytime shots, especially outdoors, but as many have said before it's not the best in the dark. It is only a phone though. It has been useful to have it there sometimes when I have forgotten my actual camera so I've still been able to take pictures that were worth keeping.

It's simple & stylish but there are new phones out now that do everything this one does but better as well as add GPS & or Wi-Fi, it's nearly a two year old design.

Worthy of an additional mention is the web browser which is great & allows you to browse full web pages with few rendering issues.

At first, I loved this phone. It had everything I needed until a few months down the line, glitches appeared.

First of all, I've been putting up with the horrible problem of NEVER being able to receive text messages properly. I bought a large memory card for my phone (£40s worth), yet whenever someone sends me a text or when I try to reply, a message pops up saying text message cannot send not enough memory. Therefore I formatted my memory card. With nothing left on my phone I believed it would work fine but no, the problem continued.

I just tried to transfer music onto it & again it says I don't have enough memory which is totally ridiculous.

The joystick button also broke off & the camera turns itself off every now & again.

I wouldn't recommend this phone.

I had this phone for a year now!

Great phone, great camera BUT is REALLY easy to break! Camera sometimes doesn't work & turns itself off!

Overall it was a great phone to have & I am Proud of it!

Just doesn't last very long! I am waiting for my Nokia N82 now.

I had plenty of phones, Nokia N73, Sony Ericsson K800i, Samsung D820 & so far Nokia is the best! Thanks Nokia!

After 18 terrible months I am finally about to get this rubbish phone off my hands. It's been replaced twice & still has many problems but due to the difficulty in persuading Orange to replace the phone I've decided to bear with it for the last 11 months. I might as well list the problems I've had.

- Phone turns itself off.
- Phone freezes, & the CPU is painfully slow.
- Although the camera is very impressive it takes an absolute age to load & take pictures.
- the middle of the screen is obscured by a white haze, no idea what it is but it's happened on 2 of my 3 N73's.
- the connection to my computer is very temperamental.
- Although I don't really video call, the camera on the front for that purpose is terrible.
- I am now used to the keypad design however the tiny buttons surrounded by menu buttons continually annoyed me for the first 3 months of use.
- the joystick falls off.
- the slide design for the camera becomes filled with grit & dirt.
- the phone would hang up when I answered a call.
- the reception is very poor, this may well be due to Orange.

I've been a Nokia (& Orange) stalwart ever since I got a 5110 about 10 years ago but after this experience it's time for a change, both from Nokia & Orange. Any friends who have this phone have not been complimentary about it either so please take my advice & don't buy it!

I have had many other phones in the past, many brands, but the Nokia is the best. The lack Wi-Fi is the problem, but only this. It's a huge Smartphone!

This is by far the worst phone I have owned, software & camera were very slow & phone crashed daily. Alarm clock never had a snooze, take more than 2 photos in a row & I had to remove the battery to switch it off because it froze (again). I felt the keys were very small too. The last 3 Nokia's I've owned now have been disasters, so I am sticking with my trustworthy Sony Ericsson's, purely for their reliability & the sound of the music through the (proper) supplied in ear phones.

Do not buy this phone, you'll regret it.

I have had the phone for a year now. The best feature is the camera. It's just so handy to have it incorporated into the phone, & I take loads more pictures now than I ever did before. You have to hold the camera VERY steady though, otherwise the results are blurred. There's no stabiliser! & the N73 does indeed have an annoying tendency to freeze. You just have to switch off & try again. As for the phone, my main complaint as a guy of 49 with deteriorating eyesight is that I can't see the letters on the interface, or read texts without my glasses. The font is miniscule. In this sense, if I was to go purely for a phone, I would plump for the simplest, cheapest Nokia's on the market which are light & aerodynamic. I am not clever enough to work out how to download music onto it, but I have enjoyed using the FM radio.

The worst phone I have ever, ever, ever owned. I abandoned it after a week & booted up my faithful 6230i.

- It's SO SLOW at turning on, doing anything & you always feel like you're waiting for it.
- the user interface is so different from every other Nokia.
- the joystick is flimsy & just painful to use.
- the ring tones don't include a sensible work friendly one.
- the camera is good but takes so long to work.
- It is rubbish with my Nokia Car Kit, just cuts out.
- the screen is too big so you can't text with it as it feels un balanced.

If you're thinking of getting it, don't. If you have it, sell it.

Long live the 6230i (well until I can get a free upgrade in May anyway).

Free minutes plus a free Wii, however I am considering selling the Sony on & keeping the Nokia with the new Sim. I can't relate to any of the problems listed in the reviews here, the phone has been great. The only complaint I had was that the controls were different from all the other Nokia's I've had, hence it took me a long time to bother sitting down & working it all out. However, having done that, I find it a great phone which takes really phenomenal pictures. I like the slight bulkiness of it, as it doesn't feel like it's about to fall apart. The battery had a very short life & needed charging every night. My local O2 shop where I bought the phone on an 18 month contract were less than helpful with any of the faults, telling me at one point they couldn't send the phone back as I didn't have the box to send it back in. Eventually the screen cracked & I have a couple of months ago had it replaced with another N73 unfortunately not be looking at N73 again.

Phone looks quite good & has some decent features. The camera works very well taking good looking pictures, has some other nice features & can be quite good to use.

However, & this is a big however, this phone takes so long to send a message leaving it unusable until the text has sent, my girlfriend has the same problem but worse. The phone also has a tendency to turn itself off (then on) & it is also prone to freezing which calls for removing the battery then putting it back. The phone can also take a long time to respond to things & basically ends up getting confused. (the battery life is good though! ).

I have always had Nokia phones but after this phone & its sheer annoyingness with usability I am jumping ship & getting a different brand of phone which is arriving imminently!

All in all the phone is quite decent if these problems do not arise as at first I was happy with the phone but this happiness was not long lasting (a couple of months). It seems from other uses that the problems are inevitable & so wouldn't recommend this phone, it's also a bit bulky!

I got this phone after reading all the hype, obviously from review sites that were funded by Nokia. I used to have a 6230i, & although that phone was more limited in its features, it did what it did well, & without fuss. I am a business user, I am 40, & tech savvy. I want a phone that works primarily as a phone. All other factors are a bonus.

The problem with the N73 is that it completely fails to deliver in the User Experience. The most notable annoyance is the slowness with which the operating system makes things happen. It's not super slow but you always have the impression that you are waiting for the phone to catch up with you. This is not just the N73, but a problem with a great deal of modern technology.

The keyboard is a bit fiddly, but then you can see this before buying it so that's my fault. The joystick is just the worst bit of ergonomics I have seen since the square steering wheel on the Austin Allegro. It is wobbly & weak & if it breaks, then using the phone becomes almost impossible.

Navigation is slow, again thanks to the operating system. No timed profiles either a glaring omission for anyone who doesn't like being woken up in the middle of the night by texts or calls.

The camera is not bad, & produced decent snaps (I am a pro photographer) for a phone, probably one of the N73 redeeming features. However, don't shut & open the phone too often or the operating system will get stuck again.

The N73 also displays weird traits when it has been plugged in & out of my Nokia wired in car kit. Sometimes the microphone is disabled, so people I call can't hear me. This is very annoying, & means I have to reset the phone.

Personally I suspect that it's the Symbian OS, & its implementation on the N73 that makes this phone suck so badly. I am bitterly unhappy that I am saddled with this phone for the next 12 months.

I have always been faithful to Nokia love the ease of working them. I got the N73 phone about 4 months ago, initially loved it. Things are now going bad. If someone rings it cuts off & switches them straight to answer machine. Every feature freezes constantly. If I receive a text, it can take up to 3 minutes just to open it. I think the design of the phone is great, right size weight etc, but these problems are getting me down. I've still got another 14 months of contract left. Think I will be changing it sooner.

I love the feel of this phone. It's a nice weight & size. It does have its disappointing bits. After just two weeks the screen froze & I had to take the battery out to get it to reset. I thought that was a one off but it happened again a couple of weeks later. I don't use loads of the features so it's not tired out!

I have had the phone for 3 months now & it has now started to behave like there is no signal even when showing full. Then sometimes the signal bar just goes off & I have to switch it off to get the signal back. (That doesn't always do the trick.) It's obviously broken so am in touch with T mobile to see if they can help.

I have put the fault in on Google & I think it's a common fault with this phone which is a shame as I would be tempted to keep it rather than upgrade.

I think the camera may be deteriorating as I seemed to get much clearer pictures before however they are still very good. I would love to listen to the radio on it but you have to plug in the headphones (even to switch it hands-free). I cannot wear those type of headphones as they pop out of my ears. (I smile too much! )

If I wasn't having these FAULTS & it worked as it should I would give it 90% but I wonder if it was released in a hurry!

Good design, good features. Just a pity you can't use them most of the time!

The positives.
- There is a brilliant feature when you set up the phone, it rubbish all the data off your old phone, including text messages, contact numbers, calendar reminders, ringtones, photos etc via Bluetooth (& without you having to insert your SIM card).
- the camera lens has a cover, unlike most other Nokia phones.
- the size of the phone is good (neither too heavy, too big or too small) & the screen is clear.

The negatives.
- Battery indicator says you have half a battery left, you actually only have 20 seconds of talk time left.
- Phone takes 3 minutes to switch on (after you hold your finger on the button for 30 seconds) even slower than my PC!
- Phone often switches itself off.
- You cannot switch off the 3G manually, if you have a rubbish signal on 3G, it will take forever to decide to auto switch to GSM.
- Signal often drops during calls. I have had countless dropped calls with this phone.
- You cannot lock the keys manually like all other N-Series models, you have to set a lock code (minimum 5 number pass code) & wait for the auto lock to kick in.

Having liked this phone on day 1, I began to hate it from day 3 & have happily N-Series. Bottom line, go for something else, this is the most frustrating phone you will ever own! Bring back my 6320!

I only read reviews of the phone after I bought it, which may seem silly but I am extremely glad, because there are many bad reviews out there but I am extremely happy with the phone.

I bought it in September 2007 & have had very few of the problems mentioned in some of the other reviews. The phone has frozen perhaps 8 times the whole time I've had it (almost 4 months) always when I have many applications open or try & use the camera while listening to music. When this happens I just have to press the end call button to return to the main screen then hold the menu button & end the frozen application. The phone has never turned itself off & I have never lost a call. Also I have had no problems with the speed of message sending.

All in all I think this is quite acceptable considering the quite impressive capabilities of the phone. I have the music edition, perhaps the software has been updated from the earlier models.

The camera is very good in most conditions, but in some low light situations the picture can be grainy. However, by increasing the exposure & holding the camera very steady this can be partly rectified.

The key pad is quite small, & takes some getting used to, but I have gotten used to it & it no longer bothers me.

I have a 2GB card in it with about 400 tracks & still have plenty of room to take full size photos. This hasn't noticeably slowed the phone down, & I soon plan on upgrading to one of the newly released 4GB mini SD cards.

I would definitely recommend this phone, assuming it works as well as mine, you will not be disappointed.

I can't wait for my upgrade in a couple of months. The music player has good sound. Photos are good quality when the phone eventually lets you take a picture- you put it to camera mode, as soon as you're about to take picture it goes back to main screen. I like that you can keep loads of messages, I had over 600 at one point! The joystick on the phone is dodgy, feels really loose & scared that it will break off then the phone is no use at all!

Worst phone I've EVER had or had the experience of using ever. Do not buy the Nokia n73. Apart from everything else that's wrong with it which has been listed here, I'll stick down my own personal gripes.

Charger becomes useless very quickly, those fine pins are rubbish.

Phone takes 6 SIX minutes to send a text & is frozen the whole time this is happening (I walked a mile before my phone sent a message one day).

If someone attempts to call me when a message is sending the phone will switch off, the other person thinks I am just not answering & I have no record of any missed calls.

Camera plain doesn't work most of the time. Open the shutter, press the button to take a picture & it scoots back to the menu screen.

Friend has the phone, Every single time someone phones him & he answers the phone switches off, he has to turn the phone back on (which, sadly takes around 3 mins anyway) then call them back.

Nokia have made a right bollix of themselves with this piece of junk. I'd feel safer carrying a Fischer price phone from the early learning centre.

I have got a N73 for more than 1 year. My opinion on this smart phone is NO BETTER THAN A NORMAL PHONE.

The biggest problem is slow. Sometimes it crashes. Updated the firmware, the problems remain. The camera is incredibly slow, & it uses a LED for the flash instead of a proper one.

The build quality is good in general. But I do have a complaint. Unlike other models, N73 has a point stick instead of a direction button. & the point stick is very loose compared with Sony Ericsson K800i. I always worry about that it can be broken easily, but hopefully it hasn't yet.

The battery life is fine just like other Nokia phones.

My advice on this phone is don't get is if you need a phone just for talking & messaging. Get a 6300 or others instead.

As a follow up to my review back in July, it's been now 6 months of playing around with this one, so I got all the flaws out in the open. Here they are.

- Like I said, SLOW INTERFACE. It gets worst with more stuff on the handset.

- Camera acts a bit funny at times, you click a picture, it's stuck & returns back to viewfinder screen where you can take another picture. & the earlier one gets saved without asking you what you want to do with it.

- Connectivity between the data cable & the phone is not stable. & this is a known issue. While the phone is connected, it says disconnected on the computer & you have to either press the USB with force for the computer to actually recognise it. Now this is annoying but what's bad is when you're updating your phone's firmware, you need to be VERY CAREFUL, cause if you move your phone & it disconnects, consider your phone BRICKED!

- the body build is absolute third grade. So many creaks!

- the joystick which I said was nice 6 months back, well I was wrong, it is rubbish. I am afraid if I navigate with a little more force it might just break or come out, cheap stuff from Nokia I must say.

- the front camera is actually useless. I'd not care if they hadn't added the thing.

- the earphones are cheap quality, I'd get better quality from the roadside hawkers.

- the FONT IS HORRIBLE, SMALL TINY FONT. To see a contact's telephone number is quite a pain. It all depends on each individual really. But it is small.

- Battery life is not satisfactory. Have to recharge it every day & once it hits 3 bars, it rapidly declines simply being on standby.

That's about all the flaws I could find so far. Overall Rating 5 out of 10.

I've had my n73 for 11 months & had no problems whatsoever, it's on contract with O2 I update the firmware whenever one is available, it works like a PC, if you put too much software on it will slow down, mine works a treat. I have 1GB micro SD card for photo's & music, the phone has got a great camera, it is also a good MP3, WMA player. I've had no problems with the battery life it lasts for days.

Case rattles. For beginners it is not very easy to find software.

N73 is a great phone but always when I am taking a picture it suddenly stops & goes out & comes back in the picture, but it takes the photo. I don't think it's a bad thing but another thing is that the battery is a little too rubbish, I charge my battery every day!

From my testing's & observations I would describe the N73 as being worse than useless. Beyond the cosmetic advertising, I Found N73 photo image quality pathetic, battery life was poor, & text writing capabilities atrocious. The only time I had a stress free, peaceful experience with this model, was when it was forever turned off! My advice to anyone who would like to preserve their mental sanity is to avoid this model at all costs.

The Nokia N73 is the most irritating phone in the world! It inexplicably takes well over a minute to send a text message. It crashes on a daily basis. It often doesn't react to the button you've pressed. It looks good on paper but in reality it seems to be too clever for itself.

I have a N73 Music edition bought in Feb 2007. Even though the phone has great features, its usability is very poor. It is so slow you have to wait for ages before it reacts to button presses. It is only good for music not a good piece as a phone.
