It's a user friendly phone with all the generally required communication features. However, its design is not brilliant! Its Bluetooth is also quite slow.

I am using E50 presently. I did like its Internet speed. That's why I had it with me for over a year. Now the first ever mobile I have ever got attracted is E51 because of its slimness than E50. I had a look at it. It's quite excellent rather than good.

Great look & easy to use. Battery life is great. Great features that allow you to place word documents & open them with built in application.

But, operating system crashes. It takes forever to open images. It would reset the mobile when checking balance on Pay as you go. Sometimes phone would go on loud speaker during a call & not be able to get it back to headset function.

I have had this phone for a year now & despite it not getting over used, it is now really struggling. The battery life is shockingly bad, it crashes, it freezes & it scratches really easily. My phone now looks like the phone of a builder!

I have never had a bad phone from Nokia, until now.

My advice is don't get it. It will only let you down!

This is a good phone, it making calls however, the text messages take at least 5 minutes to send. This freezes the phone & you have to remove the battery to restart it again. There is also no camera & the phone could benefit from one. These are the only two factors about the phone that have let me down.

I think now it's useless to buy this phone, as Nokia has massively degraded its quality. I had purchased mine made in China but it is not like my pal, who had older edition. Difference which I have seen hand to hand are as follows, so be alert.

Best thing about E50 was it beautiful sharp crispy screen & good battery, plastic quality too but these three things are missing. Screen quality is bad now. Earlier the screen was in a white tone so picture looks stunning crispy. But now, it's in dull yellow tone. Which is simply unacceptable?

They have started giving ordinary batteries. Most common in Nokia low end sets, so you can imagine its performance. Plastic quality is also hard & cheap not beautiful smooth like earlier production. Also its joystick is also not long lasting same as Sony Ericsson. Mine downside joystick has stopped responding.

In simple words you pay less you get less. So if you are planning to buy it now just change your decision. Also Nokia have stopped giving data cable with the new packages, because original data cable will cost you RS 1700. Instead now they give a 512 memory card & a useless carry pouch case. To bring down the price more downwards.

Also major drawback is its ear piece gets terribly hot when you talk more than 5mins. You simply can't face the heat radiated. So if you luckily get an older pack manufactured before August. Or older then buy it otherwise forget it. It's simply waste of money.

I have now had this phone for 3 months (sim free phone running version 07.36.0.0 07 09 2007 RM 170) using Vodafone UK. I have found this phone to be excellent on call quality, signal strength, usability & battery life. However as with some of the other reviews accessing the gallery, in particular the pictures on the memory card can be quite slow, taking typically 10 seconds to open the gallery for the pictures (2GB Memory Card Installed). The phone has an extremely solid feel to it as the back, screen surround & the bottom lip of the phone are made of metal (no really, metal). Oh & if your reading this review & you own a Ford vehicle with built in Bluetooth you will be happy to know that this phone WILL work perfectly with it! Overall if you need a phone for calls, texts & connectivity (& there's nothing much wrong with your eye sight) then this is ideal for you. If you need a phone for pictures, music or the latest fashion accessory then this phone is not for you.

Essentials that you will need for this phone are Auto lock (automatically locks the keys), Stopwatch, Divx Player & some games. Applications that will work on this phone are TOMTOM 6 & Nokia Maps (external GPS unit required).

No camera on this phone must be an early model. Font too small, keys tiny & stiff, menu access poor, very slow. The loudspeaker not loud enough on full volume. Will not connect to Bluetooth headset in fact it can't even discover it. Not a Nokia I would recommend, obviously designed by committee from used parts bin. I will try 6300 or 7500 next. Nokia please withdraw this phone maybe you could replace it with a carrier pigeon.

I bought Nokia E50 black 1 month ago, synopsis.

- Design is excellent.
- Features are excellent.
- Keypad usability is poor.
- Fonts visibility is average.
- Symbian OS is good.
- Processor speed is poor.
- Battery is average.
- Bugs it has loads of them, updates needed regularly.
- Camera is pathetic 1.3 megapixels.

Software issues can be solved up to certain extent by upgrading to version 7.36.0.0. Either by data cable. It is quite stable without facing loudspeaker problem. Nokia should start to think over again before launching such a disgusting phone.

I have had this phone for about 7 months. It has some serious problems:

- It frequently hangs up if you try & end a call. It can only be rebooted by removing the battery.

- It constantly tells me it can't upgrade the Nokia CK7W hands-free kit. Then it freezes. Why it has decided it wants to upgrade the hands-free kit I have no idea. But having to remove the battery while driving can't be a good idea.

On the plus side battery life is good. Overall this phone lacks competent testing before it was released on to the market. Or is that what Nokia thinks it's paying customers are for. Stay well away!

It's a great phone.

Everything in this phone is good except for a few things.

The joystick could have been better. Sometimes it's just simply painful to use the joystick.
The video quality is terrible (especially the audio recorded in the video)

Otherwise. I love this phone. I've had it for 2 months. It hasn't given me any problems yet. Love the battery life & the call sound quality.

I am using the N-Series headset with this phone. So as far as sound quality is concerned. It's the best sound I've heard from a low-mid bid budget business phone.

Font size might be an issue with some people. But I think that the font is perfect for its size.

Overall:

It's a very good phone. If you're looking for a good business phone but you cannot afford a HP or a blackberry. Then I think this is the phone you'd want to buy.

Very satisfied. An excellent compromise between size & features/performance. Smallest font size is small, but at 71 years I can still read the screen clearly. The only problem I had was with the editing screen, black text on a dark blue background! I downloaded 2 new free themes from Nokia, Steel & Dark Stripes. With either of these the editing screen is much more eye-friendly, white text on a dark grey background. I use my phone with a Garmin 10X Bluetooth receiver & Garmin Mobile XT software. Great definition, smooth scrolling & audio routing with safety warnings. This is the latest phone in my collection which includes the 8210, 8310, 6230 & 6280 as well. Nokia is great!

Design: Looks like an executive phone & very stylish.

Features: Packed full to the brim of features, mostly for emailing, etc.

Usability: rubbish! Takes forever to start, hangs all of the time, font so small that nobody but myself in my house can read the screen - but I do have to struggle (maybe that was an intentional security feature).

Basically it is pathetic. Worst phone I have ever owned - total waste of money. DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE. IN FACT, DON'T EVEN DO A STRAIGHT SWAP YOUR OLD Nokia 3210 FOR THIS! What is the point of having a portable anything full of features & looks stylish if it's totally unreliable?

This has to be the worst phone ever. The designer should be shot. User friendly, you are having a laugh! We are a cab company using Nokia for the past 3 years, with only very minor problems. We have had this E50 for 36 hours & only by the grace of our controller with a soft spot for phones has this gremlin not been run over several hundred times! Unusable, should be unsellable. We have several graduate students who have given up trying to negotiate the menu, (these are computer geeks) who ALWAYS instantly know how a phone works. Bring back the 32 range!

I have bought the E50 two month ago. It is easy to use. The phone is built nicely from outside however there is not a latch to hook a wrist strap to it, so no bling on this phone. I manage about 1500 contacts on my phone, so it syncs without look very easily & quickly.

The Battery charges quickly & lasts for a good 2 days with Bluetooth on. The BAD: the phone is slow. It takes a while to start writing a message & to search contacts. PTT takes forever. Sometimes close to 10 minutes to load.

Whilst being full of whistles & bells, it is the most un-user friendly phone I have ever had, in over 20 years of using Nokia phones because of their simplicity & reliability, I cannot believe someone has designed this rubbish! As someone who is short sighted, I find it impossible to read whilst in the car kit, & struggle with it when hand held. Thank goodness it has the voice aid! It freezes for no reason at all & takes an age to re-boot. A smart phone my foot! Would not advise anyone to buy this phone. Come on Nokia-get your act together.

What have you done Nokia. I've had Nokia phones for many years & they have been great. The E50 is just plain awful to use.

I have lost count with the amount of times that this phone has frozen & the only way to reactivate is to pull the battery out & power on again.

Wake up Nokia & put this right.

I have always had a Nokia phones & been happy but. This phone is not what I expected it to be. Most reviewers here have got it right, the phone is unreliable & in terms of the software badly designed. Mine crashes most weeks usually in the middle of a call then its takes an eternity to power back up. The font size would be okay for the cast of 'Honey I shrunk the kids' but for me. No. I won't be getting another.

Nokia were the best makers of mobiles before this phone came out.

RUBBISH.

The phone goes onto speaker (unprompted) when you pick up a call occasionally. I don't know about you, but I need some confidentiality when I am on the phone. Even worse, when you try & finish the call, you can't as the screen is frozen, so you have to resort to pulling the back off & then pull out the battery & then re-boot. Not good.

The screen is large but font is small, so you cannot read numbers from a contact list.

SLOW SLOW SLOW. Painfully slow. If you delete a contact, the phone freezes for about 10 seconds.

Everything takes too long on this phone. I realise that Nokia have packed this thing full of bells & whistles, but at what cost.

The phone should work including contacts & messaging, & it doesn't.

DON'T BUY THIS PHONE.

By design & features the phone is really is good that why I choose it but its really slow functioning phone. The main problem is sometimes loudspeaker automatically starts upon receiving a call, after finishing the call the phone is hanged up & I can't even switch it off & switch on. I have to remove the cover, then battery & restart the problem. I've been talking to Nokia Care for last 5 months but they don't have any solution available yet. This is the family bug of this phone.

I had an E50 for 8 months.

Like so many others who have reviewed this phone I like Nokia products, but this one was the worst phone I had. Vodafone kindly replaced it for a 6300.

Initially if I left the phone in silent mode I was unable to switch it off. This I could live with, but after about 6 months it would do odd things & freeze.

The final straw came when it was in Bluetooth mode & would not only drop incoming calls, but it would shut down then re-start, not what you want when your driving.

In total this phone was returned to Vodafone three times & despite their best effort & software upgrades it left me cold.

Although in defense of Vodafone they did not make a fuss over changing the phone for a different model.

Nokia took their eye off the ball on this one & it makes me reluctant to try another Symbian phone.

This phone was appalling. It finally froze up for good about 2 weeks ago & now doesn't work at all.

- Always froze up when sending a text for about 2 minutes after you had sent the message, rendering the phone useless.

- The joy stick was sharp & unable to use.

- Camera was poor.

- Would freeze for no reason when scrolling through phone book, had to take battery out to reset it.

Now doesn't work at all! Worst phone I have owned. Now back with Samsung D600 which I am very happy with, never freezes, camera is good, OS is good, battery life isn't amazing but can live with that. Stay clear of the E50.

Design over substance, it is complete rubbish I use it for business & it does the following:

- When you answer it sometimes goes onto speaker & locks up meaning you have to take the battery out.
- It hangs.
- The predictive text is rubbish defaulting to YOT when you type YOU. I don't know too many words starting YOT do you?
- The messaging is very slow it takes 2 minutes to load a message.
- The phones functions are not very intuitive like not always letting you save contacts.
- The voice dialing doesn't work at all.
- The Bluetooth connection is very sensitive to the distance the phone is from the other device.
- Screen resolution is poor & therefore the font is tiny.
- The camera is slow & poor quality.
- The key pad is wearing badly.
- The processor is slow.

Functionality that does work is the email & most calls.

All in all rubbish & continuing poor Nokia quality which is a shame as they used to be so good. If you think its good you have very low expectations.

True the Nokia E50 is slim & somewhat lighter than my previous phone but sadly I would implore the average business or personal user to think very carefully before choosing this phone. I have always had a Nokia in the past & vowed never to stray to another brand owing to their simplicity of use. This phone is truly dreadful in terms of usability, & appears to do little else of significance than the previous version. The font size is miniscule & cannot be changed (consider the prospect of a full length text message visible at once on the screen). Sending of text messages involves navigation of a circuitous medley of useless menu options, usually resulting in user error of some description. After 4 weeks of trying, I packed the phone away & have reverted to my old phone.

It's a real disappointment that Nokia have geared their flagship phone toward the teenage market, rather than to those to can actually afford to pay for them! Goodbye Nokia!

Bluetooth headset works great too, I have also got 2 sd cards 1GB & 2 gb & the phone doesn't hang up, the phone LACKS a better camera mega pixel, loud speaker-its too low, Wi-fi, mobile manager should have been given as a standard I had to buy that for £49.95 a little steep.

Other wise it's a good mobile phone for business use. A great companion, it's great side by side with the XDA exec pda.

I have always been a fan of Nokia, subject only to their utterly useless instruction booklets, but I hate this phone! Even the basic leaflet for setting up is so badly laid out I had to photocopy & cut-& paste it before I could see what the various control buttons did by reference to the diagram of the phone. It is too clever by half: despite the screen being bigger than any I have had before, the font size of anything on screen is ridiculously tiny; the menu button is small & fiddly & illogical, the most basic functions are difficult to find as compared with my last phone; putting a new contact on is a day's work, getting at my original contact list after I put the simcard in was a nightmare of digging. There is a mass of stuff I don't need. If ever I hit a wrong button by mistake I find the thing is trying to connect me to the Internet. I am sad to say that the sooner I can move on to another phone, the better! So very sad.

It doesn't have so many applications, the text size is small & the buttons are almost impossible to use. But at least they've got right with the design. Another problem that I have with it is the MMS service, it just doesn't work. I don't know if it's the phone to blame or the network, but it drives me crazy.

My first Nokia & I think it's got some serious failings. I use the phone in the car a lot - the excellent cradle is the main reason I went for this model. The problems are Loudspeaker & Voice Tag volume. You can only turn on the loudspeaker (hands-free) when the call has connected. So if you are placing a call whilst driving, you have to look at the screen until the call connects & the soft key offers the Speaker function. While you drive into the Transit van in front of you. What's the point of this? I need a speakerphone that I can turn on, listen to the call connecting & speak into when the person I am calling answers the phone. OK, OK, so I'll use the ear piece & place the call with a voice dial. The recognition part of this seems to work very well (except that you have to have separate contacts for Fred - home, Fred - office, Fred - mobile (something to learn from Motorola here, chaps) the BIG 'but' however, is that the volume of the 'speak voice tag now' warble is fine when using the phone as a handset, BUT INAUDIBLE when using the earpiece in the car (which means you again have to watch the screen whilst progressing the call - watch out, Transit van) Moreover, the volume level of the synthesised voice tag playback displays identical characteristics, so that again, some hazardous screen watching (at 4pt font) is needed to be sure that you are calling the right contact. These failings make the phone very difficult to use in the car. Roll on 12month contact & something more appropriate. Any ideas anyone?

This is just an average phone, but can be used by rough handlers...

GREAT PHONE. Easy to use like all Nokias. Lacks a little in screen resolution, but overall A1.

Just ordered the phone yesterday, I've had a Nokia 6230 which has held up for 2+ years, but its starting to show its age. That is probably one of the most complete phones ever, people can't believe when I tell them it had FM radio. That's the only feature I think the E50 is probably lacking.

This phone caught my eye as I have recently bought the Nokia E60 & I am extremely pleased with it, but not having a camera has been more of an issue than I ever imagined. I have never felt the need to have a camera on my phone but since I have acquired the E60 it has come to light that a camera & business phone should go together. The Nokia E50 has a camera feature & is very close in exterior design to the E60. I will stick with my E60 but look at investing in the E50 as a second phone & solely for the camera feature. Nokia are manufacturing the best business phones & all of my partners are interested my E60.
