Nokia 6233 3G Phone Review

The Nokia 6233 is a very attractive & compact phone that offers the user the even balance between their personal & business requirements. The 6233 is very desirable & comes in a choice of stainless steel silver or high gloss black finish coloured casing. This phone looks the business & does the business but at the same time it is not all work, work, work but play, play, play for the user. The Nokia 6233 looks similar to the Nokia 6230 but the 6233 has some differences as it comes complete with 3G technology & the screen is crystal clear & a pleasure to view. The main similarity with the 6233 & the Nokia 6230 is that they both have a very solid & well designed feel to them which is all down to Nokia.

The 3G technology allows the user to get access to all of the latest sports, weather & news directly & instantly on the Nokia 6233. It is possible for the user to get Internet access using mobile broadband & be emailing those all important documents to their boss, but at the same time they can be listening to the built in FM radio. The Nokia 6233 makes it possible for the user to be listening to their personal music files using the built in stereo complete with 3Dsurround sound & at the same time writing out that highly important order for the secretary to action. It can be all work & all play with the 6233.

The Nokia 6233 comes complete with a 2 megapixel camera with 8 x digital zoom which is very easy to use & the zoom is very clear & smooth. The camera has a mode to allow the user to capture the perfect photo in either portrait or landscape. The 6233 also allows the user to take video recording which can be sent via email, sent via multimedia message service (MMS) or simply stored on the phones memory & viewed as desired. The phone comes with 70 mega bytes of built in memory which is great for storing all of the messages, videos & photos.

The sound quality on the Nokia 6233 is amazing due to the high quality sound produced by the stereo speakers & the 3D surround sound feature. The phone comes complete with a music player & built in FM radio which provide a really fun & personally feel to this phone.

The 6233 comes with text messaging (SMS) & multimedia message service (MMS) which allows the user to send video, pictures, sound & text all in one message. The email service comes with a spam filter which is a great feature that filters all of the junk mail.

What a great phone. I recently dropped mine down the toilet in a service station! If you can get your head around the fact I put my hand down the toilet to retreive it then you understand how much I didn't want to loose this phone.

I took the battery & sim out, dried it with kitchen roll & placed in the airing cupboard to dry & its as good as new. This happened 4 weeks ago & its still going strong!

I have been using a 6233 for what must be 3 years now. It's rock solid. I recently tried the iPhone, BlackBerry Curve, & Nokia N900. In each case I have returned to the 6233. Call recording is essential to me, it's fast, reliable, excellent call quality. IPhone, what do you mean I can't send a file via Bluetooth? Nokia N900, not allowed to record calls? the 6233 just gets on with it. People keep showing me Music phones. The speakers on the 6233 are superb, I have not heard anything better yet. I have upgraded firmware as they have come & have not had any issues. I have never had any of the freezing or switching off mentioned here. SUPERB.

Nokia 6233 is good enough to use but it has limitations. It has 3G features but its processing speed is not as good as I have observed. Its camera is not excellent enough to provide a high quality picture & video. In addition it lacks a flash light for use at night time. Its internal memory is surprisingly very low i.e. 6MB. It has no feature to record FM radio sound in it.

I have it for almost a year now. I would mention only the bad things.

- the memory shrinks.
- No organizing for music.
- No forward or reverse for videos.
- Camera shutter sound can't be turned off & it sounds really bad.
- Large Quality pictures take 8 to 10 seconds to be saved.
- Large Quality videos are played slowly ( a 20MB MP4 video would be running slower to its sound).

I have had the Vodafone version of this one, the 6234, for over a year.

The good news, the ringing tone & vibration are excellent. I can hear it when I am in the street. The video is the best I have used on any phone, 640 by 480 at 30 frames per second. 2MP camera is average, but has a very pleasing oil painting effect. By this I mean the lens does not resolve the 2MP of detail.

Now the bad news, there is fault in the memory use software. The built in memory keeps shrinking & is not being returned as it should be. When I play MP3 files, use the mobile TV from Vodafone or use Vodafone live. I have less memory than I started with. I started with 5.5 MB internal memory. After 3 months it shrank to Zero. I deleted photos, videos & text messages, got some memory back & that shrunk after a couple of weeks to zero. In the end I had Zero internal memory & nothing stored in memory. I could not send or receive even a single text message!

Nokia repaired it by flushing the memory & I had 6MB of free memory, unfortunately. But I cannot run Google maps or the mobile Internet.

I have this phone over 2 years ago, I got off to bad start with the phone switching itself off. My service provider O2 changed it no bother. A year later I had the same problem, the phone would just switch off, freeze, reject the SIM. Again O2 changed the phone under warranty. It is a reliable phone, the volume is good, camera is good, all features good.

At the end of the day, a phone is a phone, once I can receive & make calls & send & receive texts, I am happy :-).

Before I owned this phone I was searching to the Internet to find out the features of this phone. After I read these features I am amazed because it has a lot of features especially stereo music player because I really love music. Thanks Nokia for having this phone! I really enjoy this phone. A great music, great camera, easy to use keypads, super fast in downloading but lacking of flash. It has no flash, it can still take on night time shot but not totally as clear as with flash & a little bit blurred. Don't hesitate to buy this phone because you really enjoy it. Go!

Junk, it keeps getting a SIM card registration failed error randomly which renders the phone useless until the code is entered again. Sometimes it requires the battery & SIM to be removed as no number of code re entries will fire the thing up. Mine is a work mobile but I feel sorry for anyone who has paid $$'s for one. Steer clear of this one.

I am a Nokia business customer & have always used Nokia phones but the 6233 is useless if like me you use hands-free. It sets automatic voice tags to each entry & if you have lots of contacts in your phone but only use a few hands-free it dials the wrong number. I used to be able to assign voice tags such as phone office, phone home etc. Now this is not possible. I don't recommend this phone to anyone using hands-free.

All was well until one year of use then the phone memory shuts right down. No I did not fill it with games, or themes, or new ringtones. I use it for text, email, Internet & that's it.

I removed almost all I could from phone memory & use a 2GB SD memory card. Yet despite backup & restore of all phone memory, checks with MobiMB to find what is taking up the 3 MB phone memory, removing all themes, I still have 200 KB free memory. Cannot find where the memory is gone to. Cannot use 6233 for email & text is limited with frequent memory full messages.

I have checked all Nokia support discussion boards to find an answer. Found that this is a common 6233 problem, the user cannot clean the phone memory. Some report only 80 KB memory remaining, no email, no text messages, no themes, no ringtones just not enough memory to use the 6233 at all.

Some report success with backup followed by restore with Nokia PC Suite. Some went to a complete software upgrade. Some bought MobiMB to clean invisible files out. Nokia has no answer to this, except buy a new phone.

I really like this phone I have had it about 8 months now. I found it really easy to use because of its simple layout of the menu. The screen is really bright & clear. I use it most weekends for making videos at the skate park & has never let me down on quality. It is a really tough phone as I have had many accidents with it & it has never broken. The only thing I found wrong with it is that it scratches very easily, has no camera flash & it is a bit chucky but overall I found it was a really good looking & useful phone. I would recommend it.

- Great amazing perfect loudspeaker, never find in any other mobile (better than N73, N95, Samsung & Sony Erricson)
- Nice feature
- Quick & easy access to all menus
- Good call quality + cool camera
- Perfect secret button (as voice recorder)

BUT:
- Short battery
- Bad reception & no signal if being covered
- A small bug turns it off suddenly (1 in 1000 call)
- Can't get rid of camera click (or I couldn't find it!)
_ The backlight goes on & off (due to search & change signal), (don't put it in your bedroom!)

I've had my phone for a year now & loved it when I first got it. I am not a heavy user of it, but now the battery does not even last 12 hours. It doesn't always ring when people phone me, despite there being no problem with my network (O2).

The email facility is a pain, as someone below has already mentioned, it will not download emails if you've got more than a few text messages stored in your phone.

The phone also has a habit of turning itself off for no reason. The battery life is also affected by the phone constantly switching itself from blank screen saver to normal screen display, which cuts down the battery life a lot.

Overall, good features, but be prepared to buy a new battery after a year.

This is a pretty good phone, a good balance between work & play. It has everything you might need in a phone but it does have some drawbacks that if improved in my opinion I would probably never look at another phone again.

- It's heavy, not as heavy as other nokias but it's bulky & weighty.

- It can freeze & reset the wallpaper, screensaver & ringtones (although I finally found out why, too many texts in your inbox, it may be expandable to 2GB but the inbox is in the phone memory & has its limits, clean out the box & the phone works fine).

- There is no playlist feature, the best you get is 'random'.

- There is no flash for the camera.

- Pictures at night are terrible, even with the night mode.

- Pictures & videos saved can go AWOL within the phone, difficult to find them after they are taken.

- Slow 3G access but that could be the network not Nokia.

However.

- the sound quality from the speakers are excellent, best I've heard so far.

- the music controls via the headset are basic but good.

- the 2MB camera is great by day, as is the video.

That's it. I actually nearly bought the Nokia 5310 but the only benefits it has over the 6233 is the slimness & the playlist, the camera is terrible (almost half the resolution of the 6233) & it's not 3G. Think I'll get a pay as you go sim & stick with the 6233.

Leave alone the shape & weight. This phone is real good with the upgraded Nokia screen display, the clarity of camera & video. The soft keypad, & most of all I wanted a phone with big card memory (2GB not bad) since I am a graphic artist. This is a REAL PHONE.

Two disadvantages so far, very small internal memory & its brick size.

Hey, so many people share the same experience. A waste of money. I don't mind any features, design or whatever. But reliability & this is not given with this phone. It started that I could not charge the phone properly anymore. Now, many times the reception disappears or I got good reception but always error in connection if I want to make a call. That means I can't call & nobody can call me. That makes the phone completely useless.

Loved this phone but, my first had to be replaced after only 4 months. Due to it constantly loosing message centre numbers, settings when travelling, then it locked itself up completely so that even Orange couldn't rectify it. Received replacement phone only 2 months ago & now that one is doing the same, but worse still it refuses to take any charge. Even when registering charging. I agree, it's a lovely phone & very tactile, however its reliability now means it'll be in the bin long before its due date. From my experience id steer clear. All service providers are aware that this model has numerous faults. Be warned!

The phone has been great, it is to my mind still the most stylish phone out there even though it is over a year old. The downside is its reliability. It has regularly crashed if I try to send a reply to a text message when another message arrives.

In addition to this, my previous phone, a 6230i, still works brilliantly, but the 6233 has just gone kaput for the 2nd time & wiped out a lot of info I need, annoying.

Great phone & a good step up from 6230 & 6230i but after 10 months the signal suddenly disappeared. After repair, put it by bedside one night & when I woke up it had gone again. This phone has been looked after & just isn't reliable enough. All my settings also wiped themselves off which was very inconvenient. It all works apart from the phone bit & camera is good but I can't call or receive calls. Just great!

If it worked & had a wallet feature as per 6230i it would be fantastic. Also the memory card fits in upside down so you can't grip the little lip on the card. Great phone but I gave it 5% as it has no signal. Now O2 gave me an E65 & that's worse than this.

NOTE: my 6230 is still going after 4 years & comes mountain biking with me every week. This & the 6230i must be the best Nokia's ever. Different brand after the E65 for sure.

OK in the 1st place ill say that in fact I use 6234, very good phone. It has poor rewind & fast forward facility but lacks fast forward in video. I have broken this phone twice because java is bad & antivirus in java is useless. Bluetooth cause problems, flash in camera is not present, pdf is only in java so in fact is bad, music players crash the system, so this mobile phone will last only with default stuff. Bye.

Great phone, I've had it for 1 year & 1 day when I write this review. It's crashed once (when someone cancelled a Bluetooth sending) but other then that it's great. I've got one scratch on the back above the camera (about 3 cm long), but it was left in the same pocket as my phone so I can't really complain.

The features are standard to any other 3G phone. & great battery, I can honestly say I've had it on the radio for 5/6 hours & still been on 3/4 or 2/4 battery. The audio quality & sound out of the speakers is great due to the double speakers on either side.

The phone is the same as any other Nokia on usability with the side bar & roughly the same menus.

Overall I would recommend this to anyone looking for a £100-£150 good quality 3G phone that will last for a long time.

I've had this phone for about a year & bought as a serious step-up from my previous Nokia. The usability is exactly the same as other Nokia phones so menus etc. They are all familiar.

Set-up & options were more varied so having a play with it is the best way to make sure you have optimum set-up. Camera worked well & shutter lag not too bad.

Battery life better than I expected for a 3G phone, but perhaps I haven't used the functions that chew battery life as much as others might.

Radio & music player quality very good & supplied headphones were reasonable as well.

Only disappointment was no plug for normal headphones.

6233 rocks.

Pros:
- Great stereo speaker sound.
- 2MP camera. Great to capture photos.
- 8 x zoom. Too good.
- Screen resolution in the range of higher price best phones.
- Java edition sometimes bad initially. But can get many s/w on getjar.com & other sites. But this doesn't have any virus like problems.
- I didn't found any n/w problem & freezing problem in it.

Cons:
- Flash & auto focus is not available in this. So night photos are not too good. Still Best for day light.
- Body attached & can't be changed. So beware of it.
- Music player doesn't have FF & BW facility.

Still this one is the best ever phone I found in its range. Thanks to Nokia. Still should have Flash light in it. You must buy this rocking model from Nokia.

I bought this phone for the main purpose of making & receiving calls, I need a phone that has voice dial, Bluetooth, speakerphone & good battery life above all other things. Hence when it came out I bought one. Have tried to setup the email option but after managing to send one mail have been constantly shown the message of memory full, despite having no emails in the outbox, inbox or any other box, Battery life is disappointing, my other half has a 6121 from work & her phone lasts twice as long as mine. Would I buy another, no is the only answer, I am now getting error messages when trying to charge the phone & the charger itself is very temperamental, like a loose wire.

I think it is time for a Samsung as my other half has had several for her own phone & swears by them.

The music player on the 6234 is very easy to use, & with an increased MicroSD card (I am using a 1 GB), it stores well enough to keep you amused. The camera is amazing, but like most phones, could do with a flash.

- I can browse the BBC & Reuters websites easily enough.

Cons:

- Major: Phone gets uncomfortably hot during a 10 minute call. This is why I would not buy this phone, as otherwise it works well for my needs.

- Minor: Known bug is MMS does not work when delivery reports is enabled.

- Minor: Battery cover sometimes slides off when in my pocket.

- Minor: Speaker phone crackles when on full volume (10) but this is addressed by dropping the volume by one notch (9)

Reading through these reviews a lot of the problems that people have with their phones seem to occur when they are on the Orange network. I have had this phone for about 9 months now on O2 & I have not had any of the problems of the phone hanging or SIM card not recognised or registered. My battery life lasts about 5-7 days with each charge - but I do let the battery run down completely & then charge it completely. I have the power saving switched on & the sleep mode switched off. I love the radio & the MP3/Music player - the sound quality is excellent. There are a few minor drawbacks - the lettering on the keys on the silver phones is not very clear & the back light does switch off after a few seconds - but these are minor problems. I have found the camera to be quite adequate & I don't make video calls so don't need a camera on the front of the phone. Overall I am very pleased with this phone.

When we tested with the seller, it was working well but when I came with it home, it started disturbing me by switching off when communicating & as well as when playing. This normally happens in 2-3 minutes time. Up too now, I have not confirmed what would have happened to the phone yet it did not fall down.

I am therefore, asking the makers to help rescue my situation otherwise I may loose the amount I used for buying the phone .I.e. 250$. This is my second Nokia I have bought but the 1st one was not behaving like this one.

Incoming calls sent to voicemail, me getting a text 5 minutes later saying I missed a call. Tried phoning out, no network available. Took it back to the Orange shop where I bought it from, who didn't want to know. Phoned Nokia, who assured me the phone was fine, the sim card was corrupted. Bought a new card, still had same problems. Took it to a Nokia repair centre, who downloaded new software on to it & assured me it was now cured, it wasn't. They now say its an Orange network problem, Orange says it isn't. I am stuck with a phone that is great at everything, except phoning!

I had this phone as an upgrade by t.mobile. At first it was a good phone until I took some photos from it. When I tried to send them to a friend the screen went blank & then came back onto the main menu. I have taken it back to the t.mobile shop, it's been back twice & they have even replaced it with a new phone.

Hi this was a great phone until it failed after the first week of having it! The phone had been safely stored in the side pocket of my car & when I went to use it, I noticed that a burn mark was visible on the screen & the phone was dead. On returning the phone to the supplier they have stated that the phone must have been dropped because the inside screen is cracked! The supplier will not budge, some non technical office person has decided that's what it is!

Amazing how I can break the inside screen without any damage to the outer case! Anyone else have the same fault with theirs?

AWFUL!

I got this phone in Jan & had to get the sim card, battery & handset replaced because I kept getting 'sim rejected' sim registration failed' phone restricted' 'enter restriction' code, phone turning itself off, losing all the settings every time I turned it off etc, but the replacements did exactly the same things, & in fact, the problems have been getting worse!

I have been on the phone to Orange for months about this & they have now finally offered me a different model handset. It is the worst phone I have ever had, & has caused me so much misery & stress. DO NOT BUY ONE!

Those of you that have a had no problems must have a different batch, because there are certainly a lot of us who have had issues with it. Interestingly, Orange have discontinued it now & are using Nokia's new 6300 as a replacement. But they tell me that this has nothing to do with the phone being a pile of do do.

A great mobile for its cost!

I have been using this for last five months & have been quite satisfied with its working. Besides the fact that it made me visit its service centre as its power button stopped functioning, which the service centre got repaired the same day.

Since then it's been great in terms of its font style, colors, speed, hard casing, good battery life/talk time & all that!

It might not attract teen-agers because of its simple design but a good tool for business & regular 'high-end' use.

I can't believe that phone of such level does not have this feature. before this I was using Nokia 6600 which has this feature. One more thing you can not play song or recording or movie while calling (But in 6600 u you can).

OK, so I never wanted this phone, I am a Sony Ericsson fan. But I was pleasantly surprised, I am on 3 with their £15 a month thing. I've had this phone about 26 hours.

On the 1st look, I was simply horrified, the design is about 10 years out of date. When I started to use it, I realised how much of a dream it was. Once I gotten over the new texting system (coming from a Sony Ericsson), I fell in love. You barely have to touch the keypad, swapping from this phone to my old one made me so grateful for the amazing keypad. It's not amazing looking but it's an amazing phone. The sound quality is incredible, I Bluetoothed ringtones from my old phone to this one, & ringtones designed for the old one sounded simply amazing coming from this one. The screen is bright & I like the text small, it means less scrolling! About the scrolling, the thing that did annoy me slightly was that you cannot easily tell when you've scrolled from the top to the bottom (scrolling up) there is no bottom to the lists. That confused me slightly. Also when you type a message if you press the Red Phone button, it immediately saves the message & returns you to the wallpaper. ARGH. I've done that a few times. In general the usability is quite good, for what I do, which is mainly text & take a few photos. The zoom is really good but the camera would definitely a lens cover!

It's also kind of heavy! Anyone else notice that?

Suggestions:

1. A LENS COVER!
2. A better designed (visually) keypad

Overall 7/10, it's a good phone, I'd definitely recommend it!

I think the Nokia 6233 is magic & every day I find something new on it for example I have just sussed out how to take a photo & I never new the phone had Bluetooth until my girlfriend told me. It is just full of surprises.

The only complaint I have to make is that I would have liked to see the phone in a better colour such as pink.

The screen is massive & the zoom on the camera is ace.

Two things I would have liked to see changed are

1. The colour.
2. More memory on the phone to start with.

Nokia has made some great phones but this would have to be one of the best.

This is a very sleek & stylish phone with a nice solid feel to it.

Best points first, 10/10 for all of the below:
1. Good design & keypad. The joystick is great
2. Fast access to all menus & applications
3. Able to access without sim inserted
4. Keypad code lock to keep out nosy people
5. Superb stereo surround sound. Very loud!
6. Great games & ringtones included
7. Crystal clear screen
8. Stylish design & solid feel
9. Features

Now the bad points
1. 4/10 for phone memory of 6MB is a joke for a business phone
2. 6/10 for memory card of 64MB should be bigger
3. 4/10 for calling it a business phone but not supplying a USB cable
4. 5/10 for not including a flash for the camera
5. 6/10 for not including a cover for camera lens
6. 5/10 for not having USB2 on a business phone

Impossible to copy from memory card to phone & back again to another card. Overall a very good phone let down by silly cutbacks from Nokia.

Hope the replacement model will address all these issues. IF you WANT A PHONE THAT ROCKS GET the 6233!

I do like this phone a lot, for its many reasons. I would recommend buying it. There are a few issues with it such as the camera/video point being at the back so that video calling can be awkward. But other than that there are no problems with it. I have never had mine cut off in any way at all, I keep it charged & can charge it in the car too as it is compatible with an in-car charger.

As for the backlight that lights up every few seconds that can be turned off. This is done by:

>>Menu > Settings > Display, & by turning the 'power saver' & the 'sleep mode' which allegedly saves battery, off.

The phone has quite a lot of memory. I have over 250 messages about 20 photos & 4 lengthy videos on my phone & I haven't used half the memory.

Its navigation panel at the side of the screen, similar to many other phones, is easy to use & a lot faster for the person in a hurry! I haven't had a single problem with the Bluetooth function & have found other devices easily, & transferred/received files easily.

The phone does take some getting used to but it's the best phone I have had. & I have had quite a few of them. Compared to my last phone (the Motorola PEBL) its amazing & I definitely recommend it.

Is it just me? Or are there some silly contributors on this site? As another reviewer asked: How can you give this phone scores, especially for 'Usability', when you don't even own the damn thing? Hellooo?

For the record: I've had this phone now for around 2 months. Yes, it is a stylish & beautiful piece of kit. I am not concerned about the positioning of the camera as I don't do the video-call stuff. BUT, the ability to see the characters on the keypad in normal light would have been a bonus. The annoying backlight / battery issue has been well documented above. Most importantly for a forty-something like myself is the fact that the font size - even set a LARGE - is way too small. Actually, when you dial a number, the font is HUGE! So what's with the miniscule font for texting & phone book guys?

Another issue I have is with the Bluetooth connection in the car. This phone regularly disconnects & reconnects. It isn't just me because my colleague has the same problem.

This isn't a BAD phone, & I repeat that it is a pretty nice looking phone. It's just that it loses out on the little issue of 'practicability' & for many of us that is a tad important!

Anyone with problems sending picture messages: take off delivery reports on your picture messages, I only found out from a similar website to this after going through several replacements.

Battery life is terrible & I face a worse problem now: it won't charge. Every now & again the phone simply will not charge. The plug feels loose in the phone socket.

When it works, it's great, but when it doesn't its unbearable! All style & no substance.

Just to let everyone know, I am currently using the same handphone too but it's the Nokia 6233 music edition. I myself have not used the original Nokia 6233, so I am not really sure how different it is from the music edition.

However, I know that the inbox sales package of the music edition is better because it contains the same items of the original phone plus a compatible music stand, white pouch & data cable. Oh, & the microSD card given has a much bigger memory of 512 MB.

I do not have any problems with the phone after using it for about 3 mths already except that Nokia PC suite is not working for me. I feel it's most probably the computer's fault but if anyone has had the same problem maybe you would want to post it on your review?

The Nokia 6233 music edition is actually quite impressive:

1) The camera is quite sharp (2.0 megapixels)

2) The games are really entertaining (flying finger, sudoku, rally 3D, soccer 3D)

3) Its white in colour so it really stands out compared to other phones (only for music edition)

4) The memory expansion is quite big (512MB microSD memory card)

The only negative thing about the phone is that it does not have a front camera for video calling.

Nice design & plenty of useful features. Took a bit of setting up with Orange, once working all is well. Main drawback is the lack of internal memory, quickly fills up space when lots of SMS's are received.

Loudspeaker is great, can use it when driving.

I have always been a big Nokia fan until now!

I bought the Nokia 6233 six months ago & regret it! There has been nothing but hassle with the phone. After getting over the initial shock of someone creating a 3G phone with the camera on the back (whose bright idea was that? try having a video call & you will see what I mean) there has been an unbelievable amount of faults with the phone.

Firstly, whenever I switch the phone off I lose all my settings I.e. Ringtones, screensavers, wallpapers etc.

Secondly, my phone has now started hanging up & switching off in the middle of conversations despite having a fully charged battery.

Lastly, if you put your hand or finger anywhere near the Arial at the back you lose the call & get a dead tone.

After reading many other users reviews I can't say that I have been unfortunately if you are buying one!

I paid that little bit extra money just so that I had a Nokia at the end, well worth the money. Its got everything I need in a phone, maybe a larger memory could be provided but lack of built in memory is the only problem, but obviously it is expandable.

I think it's all been said. Great looking phone with great features apart from the fact they don't work. This phone needs a serious firmware upgrade before it becomes halfway decent.

Don't even think about it if you want to charge it in your car because the POP port (the bit at the bottom which connects to the car cradle) doesn't support in-car chargers even though Nokia say it does.

Had my 6233 for a few months now & overall it has been a good phone, looks good, easy to use & feels quality, below are just a few major points:

>> Has a nice little 3D sound & is good quality, especially for that 'motorway' ringtone, sounds class.

>> Camera is quite good quality with 2 megapixels but no flash is a little annoying & as we all know. Is there really much point of 'night mode'.

>> Easy to use menus & has good storage capacity so long as you don't take many pictures or download new games & music.

>> Battery is satisfactory, but the annoying backlighting is what drains it the most, even more annoying is the inability to adjust the backlight!

Overall a good phone, say 8/10, but the most annoying thing about it?

The back of the phone which you slide to get the battery out, sadly it slides all too easily & due to risk of me actually losing it because it's so loose I have had to tape it on, which is hardly what you expect from a 3 month old phone! Am I the only person with that niggly problem?

I've had this phone for a couple of months & it's the worst Nokia phone I've had. It took 2 weeks & lots of hassle with Orange to get the Sim activated, & the battery life is useless, even just using phone & text it's 1 - 2 days max. Back light comes on all the time & runs the battery down, & after hours of calls to Orange, & backed up by lots of other reviews on this site, they have finally agreed to swap it for a different phone. Won't be a minute too soon!

With no hair left & a very bad attitude I was finally rewarded with a choice of a new phone. Stayed in all day, got the phone & email still didn't work. More fault diagnostics on the phone, more help on the technical help number but still no email. Finally got them to send me a new phone of my choice. Wish me luck. I asked for the N73 for wife & I. The reviews are very mixed. What is the simplest phone from Nokia that offers phone calls, text, Internet & email? I do not want to run a TV channel or launch a spaceship. I've had this phone for a couple of weeks now, & it is a great 3G phone. I haven't had much trouble with the battery, as I think it is reasonably good, the user interface is easy to use & the music player is a great addition. The 2 mega-pixel camera is good, but more effects would have been good. The stainless steel frame is a nice finish to the design. However, a real player application would have done well, & I think the phone should support S60. But, many people, including me, are having difficulties with the email application & hopefully future firmware will fix this problem.

Overall, it is a great phone & I would recommend it.

I've had this phone for months but it's caused me nothing but trouble.

Most times I power the thing up, I can't use it - either the phone is restricted or it fails to recognise my SIM. Spending minutes turning the thing on & off really should not be necessary with or without a software upgrade.

Almost as annoyingly, the whole interface is poorly designed. For example, pressing one button might scroll through a list of options, only for the function of that button to change arbitrarily on one option & take you into a new menu. Hard to explain, but the upside is if you don't buy one of these you won't have to find out what I mean.

Perhaps most irritatingly of all, since I bought the thing, my message centre number has vanished twice (save it!), answer phone number once, & contacts have disappeared from either 'recently used' lists, or more worryingly from the main list. & yes, I do lock my phone in my pocket.

On top of these problems, the phone crashes more often than it should, & the battery life is really unsatisfactory.

Screw the camera & the pretty screen, how Nokia can release a phone with so many obvious & irritating flaws is beyond me. I used to like Nokia phones, but will definitely from them again.

This review is very important for anyone who is planning to buy Nokia 6233 phone because I have myself used it & analysed it thoroughly. Nokia 6233 is basically a business phone, though it is publicized as Fun Phone also but it is really not. The main feature that's tempts anyone to buy 6233 is its appearance which is truly adorable. But wait! What's you'll do with appearance if there are so many problems inside it. Yes Nokia 6233 has many draw backs that's are really astonishing but still they are there. I discuss them one by one.

1. The utmost problem is the back light which goes off every few seconds & you cannot, I repeat you CANNOT change backlight settings.

2. The ringtone is by definitely after two or three bells. This setting is also cannot be changed.

3. Another very prominent problem is the INTERNAL MEMORY which is only 6MB, though it is said to be 6MB but available is only 4MB. This means you cannot receive any file bigger than 4MB via Bluetooth or infra-red because this mobile does not support directly saving to memory card, which is still another big drawback.

4. The package is really bad, no data cable included.

5. The memory card included is very small I.e. 64MB thus you must buy a card of greater storage 'separately' if you want to store your songs & videos in it.

6. Though this mobile supports up to 2GB of memory card but even if you put a 1GB card in it, the phone becomes really slow.

7. This mobile supports very old USB standard I.e. 1.1 thus rendering it really very slow.

8. Though the camera is said to be 2Mega Pixel but still it is not up to the mark, also the camera is very sensitive to slight movement of the hands thus pictures taken are often blurry.

9. Applying themes often give low memory error.

10. Camera has neither light or flash light nor does it have any auto focus.

11. This mobile cannot install Java application bigger than 2MB thus this is another big limitation. I have a very good dictionary called 'Viren's Dictionary' whose size it about 6MB & I was not able to install in my Nokia 6233 because of this limitation.

12. The final problem is that 90% of the 6233 models bought through any package given by telecom companies, have shown hang problems. That is why this set is not recommended buy mobile review websites.

Still confused? You really don't have to be. After having used Nokia 6233 phone I have now bought Sony Ericsson w810i. Which has the same price as 6233 but has no drawbacks mentioned above. I am really satisfied by its performance & features. This set is really cool. The package is great I.e. a USB 2.0 data cable & a memory card of 512MB is included. They weight is lighter & sound quality is much much superior than Nokia 6233.

Pretty low rating on usability; & that is just because of the nagging issues with the backlight, contacts sorting & battery life. Excellent intuitive & speedy navigation between functions. Upgrade to the latest firmware if you can.

On the other hand:

Possibly best design for a mobile phone I have ever seen. If I were a Nokia manager & had this proposal for a design I would have not compromised it by releasing the phone with so many software faults! Big mistake! Looks count gentlemen! But so does the functionality. A Porsche is beautiful on the road & not in the garage.

No problem of battery discharging too soon. So blinking screens after every 2-3- min. I am amazed at all the faults people are having! I must have just been very very lucky, as I've experienced no real faults at all in the three weeks I've had the phone, apart from it crashing on me just once when I was copying lots & lots of files form the phone to the memory card, which seems understandable. Since then, nothing. I've got this phone after having a Nokia 6230i, which crashed almost every time I ended a text message with '. ' Which was very annoying.

The features on the phone are fantastic. I couldn't think of any additional software this needs at all. It's all there for me.

The only 2 'big' negative things I have to say about this phone are firstly, & mainly, why is there no flash on the camera? It could easily have been installed in place of the little portrait mirror, which I have never used. The lack of a flash means that indoor shots often turn out to be grainy & blurred, whereas outdoor shots are quite reasonable, considering this is only a mobile phone. (If you want really decent shots, buy a digital camera, not a phone! :-P )

Secondly, this is a 3G phone but has no front camera. Why? It seems to be a strange omission to me. If you where to make a video call, you'd have to do it in a mirror to see each other at the same time.

Some very minor niggles I have about the phone are firstly with the profiles. Even if you set the profile to 'outdoor', while the ringing tone is nice & loud, the text message alert tone can barley be heard, no matter what tone you set it to & what volume you have it on. Also, when writing an MMS, it tells you how many characters you have remaining for the entire page, as apposed to per section, meaning you can't work out exactly how much you have left before spilling into a new section & paying more to send the text. Though as I say, this are minor things.

All in all though, I think this is a fantastic phone, & am very pleased with my purchase!

The phone looks great & has a really nice 'soft touch' keypad but I have had similar problems to others that have reviewed the phone.

I am on my second phone & second sim card because the first of each (which were replaced separately) kept on causing the phone to say 'sim registration failed' or 'phone not registered' with a request for a code (Orange do not know the code).

With the first sim & two phones this problem was persistent, since new sim (in second phone) they have been intermittent & I can't face the hell of organising a replacement to see if it can ever go away completely (although the phone does seem to do a good job at screwing up at a critical time, for example when I am about to go abroad & need it to arrange to meet people in a far flung city that I am not familiar with).

I am not sure whether Orange software is making the problem worse, however when I had my sim in the second phone but hadn't received the sim updates to load Orange's software it worked fine, once the sim updates had arrived it became intermittent & I now avoid turning the phone off as this inevitably kicks the problem back in resulting in endless rebooting & taking out & putting back in of battery & sim card until it works again.

The backlight draining the battery by endlessly coming on - the phone is generally in my handbag & as things knock about in there pressing the keypad (which I always have locked) it makes the backlight come, once the keys have been pressed the backlight comes on 2-3 times even when screensaver is off. This is a real pain & means that sometimes the battery life on standby might make three days but other times one day & it is almost empty.

Other than this the phone is really easy to use but I have scored it low on usability because I have had so many problems getting it to stay in working order.

I upgraded from a Nokia 6230, so the 6233 is a natural choice, as it's pretty much an upgrade version of 6230.

Good points:
- Good MP3 player sound quality.
- Buttons easy to press (but the 6230 Menu btn is better).

Bad points:
- A bit heavy & long.
- Only 5 or 6 MB internal memory, way too small!
- Camera not as good as I thought it would be (2MPixels), but not bad either.
- Sound not loud enough (both talking & MP3 loudspeaker).
- Voice recorder quality not as good/sensitive as 6230's.

Still a good phone to own & use.

Generally a good business phone, but with one horrendous problem. The backlight turns off too quickly, often in the middle of whatever you are doing & worst of all, there is no backlight when in the car cradle which is quite frankly dangerous. The light only remains on for a few seconds & will go out even during dialing, also, for no good reason, the phone lights up to tell me it is 'charging', 'fully charged' etc.

This is a major distraction when driving & could well be contributory to an accident. I will have no hesitation in throwing it away & getting a Sony Ericsson K800i.

I have been loyal to Nokia for over 8 years but this has been a bad experience & put me off for the foreseeable future. Rant Over!

Nice little phone with all the features one needs, good clear screen, good sound clarity. Like others my phone crashed when sending a picture message, after one replacement & numerous calls to t-mobile it was diagnosed as a software fault, & was resolved by restoring the factory settings which is in the main settings & then having the MMS settings resent to the phone since no probs, if having similar probs try this should work.

In answer to David (review dated 21/11) the phone automatically adds a voice tag to every contact that you put in. If you select 'details' on any contact, it will display the number & the name of the contact with a 'talking smiley face'. If you highlight the name & select 'options' then 'Play voice tag' you will hear it.

Hope this helps.

Recently upgraded my 6230 to 6233. Nice phone, pity there are faults. Waiting for my third phone in three weeks. Display switches on every few minutes for about 15 seconds causing battery life to be rubbish, charging every 1-2 days. If you set contacts to display surname first, then switch the phone off, when you switch on again it displays 'first name' first, messing up the order of your contacts. My replacement phone now displays the contact with the 'first name' first but alphabetically listed by surname I.e. Name appears as John Smith but it is listed in the S's. However, if you search contact using J, it does not appear in the list of contacts under J & if you search this contact using S, it does not appear in the list of contacts under S. The only way to find it is to scroll through your full list! Phoned Orange again, who insist they send me another replacement (you have to have 3 faulty phones before you can change to a different model?) I expect the third phone will have the same problems. Anyone suggest a reliable phone that is similar to the Nokia 6233?

This phone is a nice weight & in the black silver option looks very slick. It feels sturdy & is a decent size. If everything worked as expected I would give it a great score, however.

The battery life is poor even when not in calls & when only using GSM not dual. It is better than my previous 6280 though! There seems to be something wrong with my MMS & it will not send pictures (few others have had this fault). I will get a replacement & this apparently is a fault with my handset (don't think so, search's on forums indicate a dodgy batch as there are others with same issue). The MOST annoying & bit that I will get rid of the phone because of is the fact that it always rings very quietly for a few seconds for both calls & texts. I keep missing calls & texts & that is just ridiculous. I don't buy Nokia's excuse that it is a safety feature - there is a fault & they can't be bothered fixing it.

Also, where's the golf game! I am addicted to it & it's gone. Why?

This is the best Nokia phone which I ever had. I have been a Nokia fan for years. Starting with Nokia 8210, 8250, 3210, 7210, 6610, 7250, 6230, 6230i, 3320, 6670, 6030, 6280 & finally 6233.

I have just bought two 6233 phones (black & silver) for myself & 6280 for my office headphone.

In 2000, I started using Nokia 8210 & 8250. That was the best phone at that time. Was extremely happy over my 8250. 7210 is a crap & 6610 was excellent until my dream phone 6230 arrived. It was the phone that I was most satisfied with at that time. However, the small screen, lousy camera & lousy Loud speakerphone (the other party can't hear me clearly, always intermittent voice call problems using speaker, ended up hanging up before can finish the conversation) of 6230 disappointed me.

I was thinking of switching to the smart phone of 6670 & 3320, & bought both phones together. These two phones were total disasters. It keeps hanging & always prompt" low memory, close application" With 1.3M camera, I am not able to take any picture at all, especially when it always prompt you to close application & the scene I wanted to take "disappear" by the time all the application were closed. The worst thing is if I were to increase the camera resolution. After taking picture, I have to hold the camera in position for 4 seconds, before I can move my camera, otherwise the whole picture will be very blurred.

I can't wait to get rid of both the 3230 & 6670. Moreover, the operating system of 6670 & 3320 using the Symbian software is damn slow. Making a call & switching on the phone is a nightmare, especially after pressing to switch on the phone, I don't even know whether the phone has been switched on, & pressing again when it was switched on will switch off the phone, without this intent. I got rid of 6670 & 3230 after 2 months of usage & purchase 6230i. Again, 6230i is better than 6670 & 3230 but 6230i is damn slow & not as fast as 6230. It was not my ideal phone. I was thinking of giving up on Nokia phone at that time, extremely disappointed with Nokia 6230i & 3320 & 6670, & thinking of switching to Motorola & Sony Ericsson.

So finally, 6280 & 6233 arrived, after testing it, it was a perfect phone, except that 6280 is a slider phone which does not fancy me.

The 6233 & 6280 software is very fast & switching between applications is fast too. The loudspeaker is excellent. Even when I put it in my trouser pocket, it can be heard clearly by the other party. This is the phone that I have been waiting for years. The other features like MP3 micro-SD card are great. Recently I just purchased a 2G micro SD card for US$55. The screen is big enough for viewing picture & excellent. This solves all the problems of 6230 on speaker, better camera, & larger screen size. Scrolling all the megapixel picture is a breeze & fast compared to 3230 & 6230i. However, the only problem is that 6233 does not have a video call capability on the front of the camera. And the 2M camera has no flash & auto-focus. Finally, Nokia should make it easier for user to switch to loudspeaker while making phone call. At the moment, I can only switch to loudspeaker on the right button when the call has gone through. It takes 3 seconds, unlike the Motorola, Panasonic, HP IPAQ phone which when calling, just hold on to the call button during calling out, will switch to loudspeaker mode. Similarly, there is no direct button to press loudspeaker for incoming call. You have to press option on the left button during incoming call & press loudspeaker. It will be a nightmare if you are in a middle of messaging or other application because you have to exit all the application before you can press the right button to activate loudspeaker. This can be a tedious process & you have to be very patient otherwise you will just hang up the phone. The 6230 has this direct loudspeaker button for incoming call at its menu centre button. I was disappointed when this was removed for Nokia 6230i, 6233 & 6280. If this phone has word, excel viewer, it will be excellent.

So far, I rate this 8.5/10 for overall performance. The best phone that Nokia ever had. But this can be improved with the few input which I had.

Each file is 96kB (below the 100kB limit) but it says they are 1 or 2kB too big to send. I wondered if it was something I could change in the settings but O2 told me there is nothing I can do. I reported the issue to Nokia who did some testing & said that they thought the phone must be faulty as they hadn't had any problems sending files with an O2 sim card fitted to the phone. I wonder if anyone else has had this problem or knows how to fix it? Other than that, it's a great phone. I'm waiting for my replacement...

2 laughably stupid problems: You can't point the camera at yourself & view the screen at the same time - so it's no use for video calls.

The biggest problem however is with the grey/silver case. Unless you are in a well-lit room & hold the phone at just the right angle to illuminate it, but without getting glare, you simply can't read the legends on the buttons. It's not that they're too small or in a bad font. You just don't get sufficient contrast between the white lettering & the light grey background. This is a basic design flaw that you'd expect any first year student to pick up on.

Other than these two faults the phone's OK. Battery life is about 2 days (despite what reviews say, this is in real life)

Overall it's a great phone. Its big boast is stereo speakers. HOWEVER! When you do use the music player, it SHUTS DOWN the phone reception! This means, without knowing, nobody can get hold of you! That's mad!

This is one of the best cell phones I've used. Very smooth & highly usable. Before now I have used other Nokia handsets - 6680, 9300, etc. But I find this one really cool & full of life. I think I will stick with this. But I might need to upgrade the memory to 256mb or 512mb as the need arises.

Excellent phone!!! My first nokia. It's very difficult to find a phone that will mix business features & entertainment at the same time. And Nokia 6233 can prove it by presenting the phone for me.

Unfortunately, the micro SD (64MB) is damaged from the fabrication process. Nokia Care has promised to replace it but up to now, I still do not receive it. Then I have to buy Kingstone of 256 MB, & then it works now.

Got this phone & thought it was great until I realised... THIS PHONE ONLY HAS 6MB OF INTERNAL MEMORY (JUST OVER 3MB IN REALITY!)

...& there is no way of bluetoothing straight to the memory card. So if you want to receive any files bigger than 3MB... GOOD LUCK! It is ridiculous considering the 6230i had 32MB. How they can make a phone in this day & age with 6MB of memory is beyond me. If you use ANY multimedia at all do NOT get this phone... Look towards N73, K800i or something like that.

I am taking it back tomorrow to get something with more memory that can handle files bigger than 3MB.

The perfect Nokia! I've had Nokia's for years now & this one is the top of the list. All the easy to use features of the 6310i, which at the time was the best phone by far. Now this new model includes all the latest features.

Well done Nokia!

Had this phone for 2 weeks as an upgrade on my loyal & faithful 6230i. It has got to be the worst choice I could have made. When making calls the phone would give me an on screen message saying connection error. When anyone tried to call me a voice message would tell them, the phone was switched off. To make a call I would have to switch phone off then back on again to reboot. I called Orange to report the faults they told me to turn of 3g & run on gsm, which didn't make a lot of difference, also the phone has virtually no shared memory. The camera was good & the sound was great from its twin speakers, but that's no use if you can't make calls all in all very poor. sent phone back. Sony ericsson w810i on its way. if all the latest Nokia phones are as bad as this, they will have a long fall from there high perch. PS how can some of the reviews on here be taken seriously, when the people who wrote them do not even have the phone yet?

This phone is excellent so far, the quality of handsfree sound is great, & music quality is excellent. Problem is that the memory card takes too few tracks - I have only 20!!! Somebody out there rush memory cards of 512MB or 1GB to Uganda. This phone & others need memory!!!

This is the phone that belongs to pure Nokia brand. It has all features as all now high end mobile phone have. It is very rare to have nice camera zoom but this phone have very nice zoom (8x zoom) photo quality is also nice & good video recording. This phone package is not good at all it doesn't have USB cable & only 64mb micro sd card as we all know that micro sd is very expensive. sound quality is good, battery is also good it does not have os. On whole this phone is good

I just bought this phone with 3-4 days of it getting launched in India. I am extremely happy with it. It's a very smart looking phone. It's simple & easy to use & at the same time has got all the features that you can think of in a phone of this category. Considering the features it offers I think it is very reasonably priced. The sound quality is excellent & so is the camera.

Oh my god! What a phone! I have waited & waited for this to arrive. Eventually got my paws on it 36 Hours ago & I'm speechless. It's the best phone I've ever had. Always been a Nokia fan, & this little baby really lets you know why Nokia rule! The sound quality is better than listening to my MP3 player! The photos are better than my Sony cybershot! The whole unit is the best. I had a 6230i before & was totally bowled over by that one, but now with my 6233.............. Lost for words! Magic!

When Nokia Brought Out The 6230 It Was The Best Phone That They Ever Produced & Still Is A Good Phone. It Was The Forerunner To The 6233 Which Features Are Far More Modified. Only Nokia Could Produce Such A High Quality Phone.

Keep Up The Good Work.
