This phone is rubbish. To begin with I thought that it was amazing but don't be fooled it is rubbish. After the first week of having it the keypad broke & now it won't even turn on or if it does turn on it just switches off again after about 5 seconds. & now I don't have a phone because that phone is broken & it was so expensive I can't afford another phone. I have had enough of Nokia & I am not even going to think about getting a new Nokia phone ever it is a rubbish phone maker or whatever you call it. I hate it.

The worst rugged phone ever! Nokia have really dropped the ball with this model. I am on my second & it lasted a mere month before I began having problems with it!
The keypad comes unstuck, the software is appalling & freezes, to add insult to injury it will now not send text messages, only receive them. I am switching to a Sonim XP1 as this is a true rugged phone.
Buy a Nokia 5500 at your own risk. Sad because Nokia's are usually great phones.

Had mine a year only, one exchanged for the old keypad issue. Small screen but usable just about to exchange again as software problem with answerphone. Still a Nokia fan. Can play any tunes you like as ring tones & message tones camera a bit poor but had a year in the life of a scaffolder & still going strong. Girlfriend just bought Nokia 7373 looks great as well. Only Nokia for me so far.

The worst made, worst designed Nokia I've owned. Hates Apples so no software update, good sound & large storage on the Micro SD card for music let down by comically poor jack plug integrity (suddenly loses contact & goes to loudspeaker mode, nice) & flappy panel water seal which eventually snapped off.
Phone died of software glitch (Orange's technical explanation) one week after purchase warranty replacement X1. Waterproof' keypad had 10 minutes against my sweaty ear after cycling which made it fall off. Warranty replacement X2. Phone began to spontaneously mute calls & music. Warranty replacement X3.
It's a GPS. No it's not. You have to buy a separate GPS device & hook up via Bluetooth.
It's a stopwatch. No it's not. You can't use any of the timer functions without going through a ridiculous routine of telling the mobile what sport you're doing & how much you weigh. I only wanted to time a boiled egg!

Good phone but still Nokia must work on its design & usability.
Too small fonts, maybe you're active sport lover person but you must stop & pay attention to the screen when you want to look at the clock. You must stop & take the phone closer to your eyes because of tiny fonts. When I received a message from my operator, I laughed because it can't be read because of the smallest fonts.
The 5100 also has a screen small like this but its screen was ten times more readable than 5500. I can't say negative comments about my keypad in the 3rd week of it, but the button, that is the centre of the up, down, left right keys coating has gone. & the last, the steel cover wreckages when it drops. Rubber cover was more successful.

This phone is pretty okay. Got many features I must admit. Great for outdoors but after a while the cover will come off. I have known 4 people who this happened to. It's not so easy to type on the screen because it should be bigger. I wouldn't advise anyone to buy it unless they're the active or outdoor type. It's more for that area not for a phone to keep. Hope this helps.

A Nokia user for the last 8 plus years I can say without hesitation this is the worst handset I've ever owned.
The keypad started to peel off within a few weeks & as soon as I started using it I started getting complaints of a constant echo on the line, so after putting up with it for a couple of months I sent it off for repair. The software was allegedly reinstalled, but if anything the problem is even worse now.
There is no keypad lock so my local taxi firm have the hump with me as they're the first name on my contact list so I am accidentally bombarding them with crank calls when the phone is in my pocket.
I would do anything to get my old 6230i back than be stuck with this rubbish phone. Roll on April 2008 when I can finally upgrade & get rid of it! In my opinion, on paper this could be a great phone, in reality it's a complete let down.

This is an excellent, compact, rugged Smartphone.
Since this runs Symbian S60 v3, there's a huge range of software available for this phone. It will run Google maps, Opera browser, AvantGo, just for example (though not all at once).
You can put a 2Gb micro-SD card in, to have plenty of room for all your music. It's got an FM radio, which works well, & the Sports mode is OK (& you can use that as a stop watch, though it's a bit clunky).
The main thing missing as an all-round Smartphone is Wi-Fi, but with the already noted limited battery life, this would probably be a non-starter. As to the battery life, what's the problem with charging it every night, anyway?

Well the phone really is meant for a much younger generation it has many key features but it is hardly usable not because of lack of knowledge but due to the worse service provided here. It's a good mobile phone but it does have a very small screen still though a very good choice. Of the phone lacks speed but the rest of the phone is superb.

Reviewer: Chris - Telford, UK

The most difficult phone I have ever had to use complete with the most difficult & complex instructions ever known in this decade. Not to mention the trash on phone guide, which is at best an utter waste of time, missing all the items you may want, like how to change the ring tone for example, & to top it all, it takes half a day to decide to switch on. Nice looking but a complex handset in my opinion.

Don't get it! Supposed to be a sport phone but is nowhere tough! I am about to send my second one in today! I am disappointed as I was firm Nokia fan & I think I will be trying another brand soon.

Nokia 5500 is a kind of masterpiece in its kind, imagine really good functions of this phone that I am sure you have never seen in any other model & brand, like tapping command & sport features which act really amazing this phone, felt more than 30 times down but nothing happened to the phone so it shows durability of this mobile phone, regardless of these things it is really well designed phone which really can be carried piece of cake, forget its keypad I didn't have any other problem with this phone & I love it therefore I won't change it very soon thank you very much for this opportunity.

Good sized phone that easily fits your pocket, many features & excellent sounds. Screen a little bit small though & since I had the keypad replaced, I am quite careful that I don't overuse it by too much texting. The keypad may be the major flaw. Apart from that it's great.

I brought this phone, & just had to replace the keypad. The back is also a slight pain. The features work brilliantly & texting is easy enough. No complaints, I like this phone, despite all the quirks; but then if you look hard enough everything has some sort of problems. You like something for it's qualities, love something for it's faults. Despite all the little problem, & the key pad is a problem for a phone designed to be tough, it is still one of the best phones out there. Oh & my keypad started to came of & I still managed to use it in that state for nearly 5 months. When I finally took it in for servicing they replaced the key pad & back no questions asked.
Reviewer: Chris - Jakarta, Iran

Never had a worse phone. Two key pads fallen off now. Nokia refuse to acknowledge problem, presumably to avoid having to pay compensation to everyone who has bought one. The running feature is also pointless because it does not accurately log the distance you run, just estimates on the number of strides you take. Up until this, I had always used Nokia. Last week I bought a Sony Ericsson & have been amazed at the difference.

OK. Where to start, Most of the bad reviews are written by 'the older generation', who need to read the manual before being able to use their phone (no offence guys), but what I am trying to say is that before you bye the phone, I am guessing that you actually have a look at it & I am guessing that you have noticed that the screen is small & it's complicated & blar blar blar. I just don't get it, you say that the design is poor, then WHY on EARTH do you bye this design phone? I think that it deserves better, it's really cool & easy to use, I mean this phone was made for sports, so why would the older generation buy one? Sorry that my review was so harsh.

Couldn't wait for this phone to come out, but as it wasn't available on contract I had to buy it. I'd imagine the contract providers don't give this phone because of the peeling keypad issue of which I am a victim - I hardly use my phone (a walky talky to the missus would suffice) & don't text much at all, so for the keypad to peel off is very poor - shame as I am really pleased with it apart from that. 2 megapixel camera (which I haven't used) expandable Micro SD for music & a pedometer are really great functions. If they sort the keypad issue, this would be the only phone you'd need for a few years.

Don't waste your money! I am on my 2nd keypad in 3 months. Nokia say there is nothing wrong with this phone! Just Google 'Nokia 5500 sport keypad' & you will see forums all over the world complaining about the keypad.
Reviewer: Keith Longurre - London, UK

One of the most satisfying phones to use in terms of features within a package of its size (small). Users who complain of the smallish screen should understand that the text fonts are actually at least 1mm physically larger than the alphabets on the dialing pad - so if you can read these you ought to be able to read those on the display screen in a properly configured brightness setting. I have had this phone 3 weeks & I find it does everything it says it can in the manual - read it. I like its lightness, get 5 days use on one charge & love the wide possibilities of the Symbian software. The looks may not match the aspirations of Prada or Tate Modern folks but I am not bothered by that. Form follows function.
Reviewer: Myron Tkaczuk - Leicester, UK

Dreadful! Although I have slim fingers, it is almost impossible to use without doubling up on keys. Texting is a nightmare. The manual might as well be in Chinese, very unhelpful - it took me 3 days to set a tone for received texts. The keypad peeled off after 2 months of minor usage. Get a grip Nokia, the phone is great, but usability is almost non-existent. Have had 8 Nokia phones - this is the best for functions but the worst for using them!
Reviewer: Guy Olmin - Stockholm, Sweden

Good stuff in theory - piece of rubbish in reality!
Lots of usable features with the option of stuffing it with even more since it's a 'Smartphone'. There's loads of aftermarket software applications to fit every possible taste & need. Unfortunately were even close to complete the developing process:
- My keypad peeled off after 3 months of intermediate use.
- The painting of the button in the center of the 'joystick' peeled off after 4 months of intermediate use.
- Fully charged battery lasts some 1 - 1, 5 days.
- Fonts are irritating small even with perfect eye sight.
- The user interface (menus etc.) is irritating slow.
- MP3-player is, in my opinion, just about useless since the maximum volume still requires quiet surroundings.
I do not recommend anyone to waste money on this prototype!

This kind of mobile phone is the best one for me who tried to match my mobile phone phone with my daily activities. Nokia 5500 converts all my wishes in simple ways. It may be small in size but not least in features. Some software included in the package couldn't be found in latest Nokia mobile phone phones such as text to speech, tapping command, etc. So, I think the best buy for Nokia in 2006 is this one.

The keypad peel off is a real problem. The claim to be dust & water splash resistant is a real let down from Nokia. I want my money back. Maybe 6300 will be a better buy.
Reviewer: Arunav - Bangalore, India

I have basically bought this phone for its compact design.
If you compare it with other Nokia Smart Phones, this phone is the most compact except the new commer Nokia 6300 (Slim). It has got the Same OS as Nokia and Series Phones. But I feel Nokia N Series Phones are very bulky & uncomfortable to carry.
An Ideal mobile phone should fit on to you Palm. & that's it the Nokia 5500 Sports offers. Sound Quality is really very good. If you charge it properly it easily works for 2 days. Compact & fully loaded. The screen may be small but it supports 265k Color.
Negative Feedback:
- Screen is really very small. My dad can't use it.
- Little bit over Priced.
- Keypad gets peeled off due to prolong usage.
- Internal Memory of 10Mb is less. It should be at least 50-80 MB.
I have changed its keypad once. Let's see how far it goes now. I think Nokia will be able to solve this Keypad problem soon. This is an Ideal phone for those people who wants compact design will all the features of Nokia N Series. This phone is truly made by Nokia thinking in Mind Young Energetic People. Pronto if Nokia would have added some N Series feature like Big Screen. Etc then the sale of and Series would have dropped drastically.
So don't be harsh upon your Nokia 5500 Sports. Just see how big sacrifice it has given in terms of its usability & design to make the Nokia N Series Survive.

The Nokia 5500 Sport is a great phone if you're the type who always has a mobile phone with you, whether you're in a business meeting or in a gym. I found the 5500 Sport to be perfect for my lifestyle - I am a runner & I love storing music - without looking too gaudy or teeny bopper for me to be ashamed of it in a business meeting. One of the clinchers for me, however, was the fact that it had predictive text input in my local language, which made inputting 4 pages worth of SMS easy as pie.
If you're going to get it, however, be ready for some serious waiting. I think it was because I am such a heavy SMS user (think 4k messages per month): the keypad began peeling off. I gave it to the Nokia Center & they said they'd replace it; I'd just have to wait for the replacement part to come in from Singapore. That was in January 2007 & the keypad hasn't been replaced yet. Apparently, Nokia hasn't prepared enough customer support to keep up with this phone.
If you love your movies & pictures, think twice about it because of the (reasonably) small screen. If you're the type whose phone is always there through thick, thin & grimy rainwater, go & get it.

I have had this phone for 5 days & am at he end of my tether with it, if its not careful it WILL BE OUT the WINDOW. It's going as soon as possible & that's it! Well this phone is not very good at all, if you have poor eyesight this phone is not for you. The screen is very small & hard to see. If you want to call or text people a lot it is very confusing & difficult. I would say this phone is good for sport lovers as it has a training program & says how fast you are going. This is by far the worst phone I have ever had. I was extremely disappointed; after reading all the hype I was really looking forward to buying it & it was such a let down.
Faults: the back cover does not stay on. It is a very poor design & fit - as soon as you start texting it comes off. It feels very loose. The keys are quite close together on a tough keypad & if you are a hardcore texter you will quickly get sore thumbs. It is quite awkward to press the bottom three keys. All text on screen, including menu, is very small. The voice which reads out data is very unnatural & hard to make out.
On the plus side, however, there are so many applications - there is a lot you can do with this phone. The games are fun & would not disappoint gamers. Also for the amount of features, this phone is still relatively small & lightweight.
Overall though, very disappointing. I have grown to associate Nokias with being sturdy & reliable phones - this was certainly not the case for the 5500 sport. I would not recommend it to anyone.

I returned this phone within two days because, the fonts are extremely small & very difficult to read as is the clock, the menu is difficult to navigate, & lack of colour on buttons does not help, the connection for the headphones is loose & kept coming out.
I generally do not mind what a phone looks like as durability & usability are more important to me, but I just do not like the design, the shape is unattractive & it appears to not look robust. I have always had the 'tough' phones from Nokia & have liked them very much, but just cannot get on with this phone at all, it's a shame Nokia have departed so much from the last design. I just wish there was more choice with 'tough' phones.

Have been a very loyal Nokia customer for years. This is the worst Nokia I have ever had, you need binoculars to read the text, battery dead after a day, this is the second phone I have had in four weeks & it is going back. Have rang to see if there has been a problem but they assure me not, has anyone else experienced the same problem with the battery lift. Don't' know whether to try another Nokia or jump ship to Sony Ericsson. P.S. Got a good excuse to the missus about being late because I can't read the time either.

I have had this phone for three weeks & have been bitterly disappointed with it in every way. The keypad has split, there is a software fault with the answer phone, which Nokia are investigating & also with sending picture messages. You now can't hear anything from a caller. After being a loyal Nokia customer for many years, I am going to try a Samsung!

Whilst initially it appears to be a robust phone, I got caught in a rain storm & mine filled with water & terminally shorted out. Although not marketed as waterproof it should have been able to keep water at bay as it was in my pocket at the time, so it failed a basic test of robustness & left me very disappointed. I have owned all the other Nokia 'tough' phones & never had one give up so easily. In my opinion this phone is no tougher than a 'normal' mobile so in hind sight I would have gone for a higher spec phone rather than this tough phone because it simply doesn't live up to its hype. Another thing that was annoying was the text size which was very small & unable to be changed which if you haven't got good close vision presents problems reading phone numbers & texts. I also managed to crash this phones software whilst using a Bluetooth headset & it would only reset after removing the battery & putting it back. All in all if you want a phone that can take knocks & bumps & be carried outside with you then don't buy this one.

It is soooo expensive, so hard to use soo tough worthless the Nokia company should be shamed of having it displayed.

THIS IS the PHONE I WAS LOOKING FOR. EVERY 1 TOLD ABOUT MANY THING BUT THEY MISSED FEW FETURES TAPPING COMMANDS (FOR MUSIC PLAYER &SPORT MADE) THAT 1 IS GREAT FEATURE DONE BY Nokia EVER BEFORE & 1 MORE IS the 'GRAVITY GAME' NOTHING TO BE DONE WITH the KEY PAD & the 'PDF' FILE READER & SENSORS & MANY MOREEEEEEEEE. ONLY 1 THING IS the SIZE OF the SCREEN ITS SMALL COMPARED WITH OTHER & SERIES mobile phone. BUT THEY HAD KEPT the SPORTS PERSON ON THEIR MIND WHILE THEY DESIGN IT. IT'S GOOD FOR THOSE PEOPLE BUT WORST FOR the MEDIA LOVERS.

High-resolution are very good. Looks like the phone is very durable.
The negatives:
1. The worst thing is the reception. Very very poor when compared to my previous Nokia 6680. Reception is lost many times even when I am in the car.
2. Battery drain is too quick.
3. Fonts are too small.
4. Earphone plug connected to its adaptor is very loose.

Toughest cell fone from Nokia. But lacks features like big screen. Have all the facilities a & -series has. Best buy purchase.

I received to-day, already have a problem with Nokia Quality Control/Design. When opened to insert battery ect the battery cover catch came loose & fell out of the cover, retrieved some bits & tried to reinstall but me thinks a couple of bits lost & can't get it (the catch) to work properly, NOT A GOOD START. Have the cover secured again using the bits available, but if removed the catch will fall out again, & first impression of the phone actually working is good, fonts are a bit small for someone with poorish eyesight.

Sporty! I don't think so. I am looking for a sports featured phone but the design of the Nokia 5500 is boring & I wanted something with sports feature just like the 5500 offers, but with a snazzier design. Really like the specification but really don't like the overall look for the 5500.

5500 SPORT sounds like a great phone but I haven't seen it yet or tried it so I feel I can't give a fair judgement yet. I am a keen marathon runner & take my training very seriously, this phone would be good for me but I will try it & return with a fair review & comments.
