It is so difficult to read the display in open daylight that it is virtually unusable. I've had to go back to my old Nokia 3510. Can anyone recommend something better in same price range?

Cheap phone, but nice basic features. Got it refurbished for 19 dollars. Good for calls, texts, IMs, & emergency e-mail checks. Nothing to look at, but it's a nice little work horse.

I like that phone due to it's battery time. From last few days I am facing a problem in the phone. Some of the phone features are disabled automatically for a hour or so randomly on my phone & I saw a different icon on my screen at that time.
Features which I noted that are disabled are as follows.
- No ring tone when I get the call during that time.
- Vibration is also disabled.
- Automatic keypad lock also not working at that time.
Can anybody tell me what is happening with my phone?

Great phone, yes, call volume was impossible to find on my own. Like the other post go to short cuts, pick right select button & assign volume to it. Volume with then show up on the screen above the right select button & you can go from there.
I just needed a phone to make phone calls with so this one is perfect.
Immediately I noticed the hard to read screen & as any reasonable person would do I went in to the display settings & adjusted the contrast. Problem solved. Or I should say there really is no problem with the phone other than the factory setting is a bad choice. Don't be a cry baby as a first step in problem solving, it won't get you very far in life & makes you sound feeble.

What rubbish just been given this as work phone, OK if you never want to use it outside, you just can't see anything, I spent 20 minutes on phone to help desk this morning telling them about screen, volume, keypad etc, & all I got was you must have a faulty phone, we have, not heard of any of these faults before, what a laugh, perhaps they should start reading the reviews, on this rubbish.

What can be said about the Nokia 2610, I know, AAARRGGHH! It's awful & frustrating to use. The screen is terrible. Like many people I (tried) to use it outside, I really thought my eye sight was going. I live in gloomy England & I couldn't see it. Anyone living in places like Australia or California, doesn't stand a chance & have Nokia heard of repetitive strain injury? A few minutes using the keypad & my thumb was killing me.
The navigation joystick is SO frustrating to use. I gave features 20%, as I am sure it has some. I just never got to see them on the stealth screen. I've always used Nokia's as they are easy to use & durable. This one will last forever, I've stopped using it! I have now got a basic 1112, & I am a happy again.
In fact I bought TWO from Tesco (£19.99 each & a free £10 voucher for top up to boot), in case one breaks, & Nokia loose the plot & the only replacement available is the spawn of 2610. One final thought. DON'T be tempted to put it one of those recycling envelopes where it's used to help developing countries. They have enough problems with droughts, locusts, & dodgy governments, without being flooded by 2610s as well.

I was thrilled to bits when I opened my phone. It looked perfect. That was until like everyone else has said the screen is too dark. I like to have my phone on my desk at work to see the time & to see if I have any messages or phone calls (our phones have to be on silent). It is way too dark & if I am outside on a phone call, forget it, can't hear a thing. I am pretty disappointed as I've had my old brick Nokia for 6 years & it never let me down. Thought it about time I got up-to-date, but the latest technology hasn't impressed me!

If you're a mole (the black furry creature) or Count Dracula then this is the phone for you but if your human & go out in the day light you would be better getting hold of a house brick. The point is the screen is appalling, you can hardly see a thing in daylight, when the sun shines it just as well be switched off.
How could they design & sell this trash, trading standards should prosecute Nokia.

VOLUME! I just figured how to adjust the call VOLUME! Why did Nokia hide this important feature? TO ADJUST VOLUME, Click MENU, SETTINGS, MY SHORTCUTS, Right Selection Key & then scroll down to Volume & Select & BINGO! Now your right selection key says Volume & if you click on it, it gives you the volume bars & then you can add volume or subtract by using the directions!
Phew! I thought this Nokia doesn't have this basic function, what a relief!
I haven't really tried it outside yet, so not sure about that part. Sad I can't see the time when it cuts back to black after 10 seconds! Otherwise it seems to be a good, solid, light, basic phone with good battery life.

I have had this phone for about 6 months now. It feels cheaply made. The buttons do not seem very positive to the feel. Trying to lock or unlock key pad, you have to have couple of tries before it unlocks. The screen has a dark tint that you can hardly see the time on bright day. The sound of the ring tones, is simply dull!

Typical boring Nokia design, once you have seen one, you have seen them all. Nokia wouldn't win the most original design award, that's for sure. This is a company phone for me, so I am graced with the fact I did not buy it. If I had purchased it, I wouldn't want to pay more than £20.00 for it.
I would say on a positive note, perfect for my son. Come on Nokia, try & be creative, make a phone that is different to the phones you was making 15 years ago, just changing the colours of the casing will not win me over.

Reviewer: Polocanada - Canada

I agree that this phone is no good. It is bad for Nokia standards. Screen is weak, can't see in bright daylight. The glossy plastic cover on the screen doesn't improve it either. The sound is NOT weak as many people here reported. The sound is VERY LOUD!
You just have to adjust it. To adjust the volume, you can program one of the keys (Navigation or right key) to display volume bar. You get very loud volume from this speaker. I was totally shocked! Try it.
The only thing to complain is that there is hiss in the speaker. So the volume is high pitched. Not very pleasant.
The keys on the phone are pretty pleasant, good feel. The joystick button is rubbish. Bad to use, I always cancel by mistake when I navigate through menus.
This phone should have a camera, bright screen & a better joystick & it would be a very good phone.

One moan the back light, it could have done with staying on a little longer than what it does you only have to put the phone down for 2 minutes & the light goes out.
Other than that it's a fab phone does what I want, texting & calling people.

This phone is horrible! I got it for free but had to commit to a two year contract with my provider, what a mistake!
- I can't see anything on the screen unless I am in a dark room.
- It back light goes out after about two seconds (very annoying! ).
- the audio volume is weak & I can't figure out if it can be turned up (I can't hear anyone on the other end unless I am in a quiet room, & forget hearing anyone outside).
- the ring volume is too low, I have it on maximum & still can't hear it unless it's right next to me.
I'd rather pay money & get something I can actually use! When my two year contract is up, I am changing phones & providers for giving me this garbage!

It's a very simple & reliable phone, so good value for its price if you're just interested in calls & texts (as I am so that is how I have judged it). Casing is very cheap & light so I bought a Krusell case & mini-clip which protects & makes it look better.
There are issues with the display, as has been mentioned, especially the darkness of the screen when viewing in sunlight & then the brightness when viewing in the dark (as, for instance, whilst driving at night). These issues can be gotten around to some degree by the using Profiles & choosing the optimum Theme - so I have Profiles for Loud, Office, Car & use the RightNav to select whichever is best suited to the situation. It's a pity though that display brightness isn't an option within a Profile, as that would make things easier. When I do eventually upgrade I'll keep this phone as a backup.

I can understand the gripes over the low visibility of the screen, but I think this phone is set up for long recharge life. Low screen light & low volume & low heat I think the phone will last. I had a L6 before this with camera it was the worst, if I want a camera I use my Nikon D50 SLR. People are being conned by these little extras. At £25 the 2610 is great value & can be replaced easily.

What a rubbish product from Nokia. As many others have said its decent enough for the price indoors but it's utterly hopeless to use in the outside world.
This isn't a minor gripe, I am not quibbling over a detail here. The phone cannot be reasonably used for its purpose which is making & receiving phone calls let alone SMS if you happen to be someone who likes the outside world.
I have used numerous Nokia phones for years & have been a decision maker in the purchase of hundreds of handsets, mostly Nokia.

It's my first phone with a colour screen & I've had it 8 months. The screen is no good in bright sunlight, but I mainly use it indoors or in the evenings so it's okay for me, plus it comes with a free mirror :). The software is well laid out & easy to use & the phone has enough features to feel customisable & fun while not being overloaded with pointless extras. The keypad has good feedback, unlike my previous phone's squigy keys, & is shaped to make it easy to text without looking at the keys. The rubber edges to the case give the phone a nice durable feel. It charges really fast & the battery life is amazing.

Absolutely the worst phone ever designed by Nokia. Rogers marketing department should be put out of their misery. Phone impossible to use outside in any light whatsoever. Phone was replacement for PASGO phone. Have had nothing but problems from day ONE. Finally the SIM Card stopped working as well. Rogers would not even honour 1 year warranty. Makes a great paper weight. Have found a great replacement phone in the Sanyo Kanana 6600. With a far better cell coverage area with BELL it should more meet my needs. Then I will take a hammer & obliterate the 2610 into a postage stamp & mail it back to Rogers.

The only things that are any good about this phone are the battery life & the price.
The display is terrible &, as many else have said, you simply can't read it if you are outside. I work for a civil engineering firm & this is a company phone. We have 10, 000+ employees, all working outside, all with the same bad phone.
I wonder if my employer chose this model because it retails for less than 30 quid? It certainly wasn't because it was any good & the keys are awful as well, unlike a lot of other Nokia's which have nicely clicking solid buttons, these are really small, hard to push & after about 5 button presses leave you with aching hands.

This phone is very durable I should know I've thrown it against the wall at least 6 times & all the bits clip back together really well.
I have always been a fan of Nokia but producing a phone that is impossible to read unless you're in a dark cave & then adding to that stupidity by making a backlight that disappears in seconds is unforgivable. Why do they bother to display the time in standby mode YOU can't see it!
With my old Nokia I could tell if I had missed a call & read the time in sunlight. Oh that's right it's dark a lot of time in Finland & cold so no one goes outside. Well I am in Australia & we do go outside!
So my new phone is unlikely to be a Nokia. Basically it's a very durable PILE of rubbish!

As said in many previous reviews the screen is ridiculously hard to read when the thing stays light long enough for you to see it. The power switch requires the patience of a saint & the navi key has a mind of its own. Roger's Wireless bequeathed this phone as they are no longer supporting the technology my previous phone requires. I think this phone is a piece of junk. I have missed numerous calls & text messages & find it frustrating that the guides provided with the phone have very little info in them to the functions of this phone. I am surprised that Nokia would make such a rubbish phone & that it would be sent out. The only good thing about this phone is the cost to me for purchase which was zero. Thankfully!

Rob from Canada (27th Feb) is spot on. The 2610 is the least user friendly phone I've had, & fails completely as a business tool - the reason it was supplied to me by my Company. It's too small, difficult to read even for the nano-seconds that the backlight stays on, & impossible to use in daylight. In a hands-free cradle in the car it's unusable. A triumph of design over function. How did the 2610 get through any market trials? It's shocking.

I don't know what the fuss is about. This phone doesn't have a camera or MP3 player, but if that's what I wanted I would have bought a proper camera or MP3 player, not a phone.
However, I want to make calls & send text messages & this phone does that.
Some other reviewers mentioned that this phone has a dull back light, the ring tone is not loud enough & that you can't see the screen on a bright day. I've not experienced any of this!

I had a problem initially with finding a ring tone loud enough for living in the city. It also can be difficult to see the screen in direct sunlight.

As far as design concern, this model is excellent one & has good look. Stylish. So, compact & light weight. I bought recently because of available features with lesser cost like Voice Recording, MP3 ring tone etc., I am very much satisfied with design & features. But, what is the use just having features as such. We need to use. Usability is nothing. Very bad tone volume. I am feeling now why I purchased this mobile. Even if I set the maximum tone volume, very very low sound. I am missing at least 3 or 4 calls daily. So, what is the use of this phone? I don't know how Nokia such a huge maker made this mistake with the very basic feature. Did they not having any testing mechanism before going to launch a new product. I don't know how they are proceeding further. Without, high tone volume, what is the use of Voice Recording feature. How did they test it?

I just received it & I got fed up of the screen going black every 15 seconds so basically a couple of tips;
It's a basic phone without a camera. I advise as soon as you get it & after putting sim & battery charge if for 3 hours then go to menu>settings turn off sleep because power saver is much better.
I don't recommend you actually buy it but its better than the flip on GSM.

I just recently got the mobile, & I think that it's great. I have had several other phones previously but this is the best one that I have had so far.
For outside it is not the best, but it still works & you can adjust the contrast. Loudspeaker is great, a lot of good features. Does it matter how long the backlight stays on for? I just stumbled across the volume control today & have added it to my GoTo menu so the overall phone is pleasing to me. As for it being a phone, it is for talking & texting. Who cares if it doesn't have a camera. Etc. It is a great phone with great features, & anyone who's looking for a cheap decent phone - this is the phone to get.

I am giving the 'Features' & 'Usability' the lowest score possible. The reason for this is that it is necessary to be able to read the screen to use the phone & its features. In the case of the Nokia 2610 the screen is too small, not bright enough, is covered with a ridiculous reflective cover making the whole screen readability even worse. Furthermore the screen only illuminates for a few seconds before going dark again. Very annoying, & there appears to be no way of changing this. Can't read it can't use it.
This phone is being given out free by Rogers in Canada to their 'Pay as You Go' customers who currently have an old generation phone as they are switching over their system to GMS only.
The only good thing about this phone for me is that it is free!

Piece of junk, I was tricked into buying 1 & sold it the next day. Can't see the screen for the life of me out in the sun (it's like a mirror), constant problems receiving MMS's, lacks a lot of features. The only thing it had over my old 5 years old Nokia was the net access, which is useless anyway because it costs a fortune to use on a mobile. Junk, Junk, Junk. I've gone from using Nokia for years to now swathing to a Panasonic, they are much better phone all round :D

Can't seem to adjust how long the backlight stays on for. Bought this for elderly parent, & the screen keeps going dark before he has been able to finish typing in his contact details or SMS - very frustrating, even when I try it!
Good features for a basic phone at this price, but the backlight issue is pretty fundamental! Nokia say there is no way to change it. OK for kids who are not used to anything better.

When I bought this phone I only wanted a simple phone to make calls using a prepaid service. So it had to be cheap enough. What this phone offers, reached beyond my expectations.
Particularly I want to write here about the Internet connectivity, which, for me, is the main feature that makes this phone worthwhile. This is not a 3G capable phone, but its built-in browser has HTML capability. It even understands a bit of CSS. It is OK if you use it for viewing small pages, but it will quickly get out of available memory when viewing larger pages. I recommend downloading Opera Mini & using it instead, for better results. Of course, the phone has Java & GPRS.
Apart from surfing, I can read & send e-mails from any of my regular e-mail accounts, using its built-in mail reader. This is very geeky. & I can chat using jmirc, which is a very nice IRC java program. What I like most when using all these text based messaging services, is that the phone has a good keyboard &, unlike many other phones you can buy in my country, it offers predictive text input (T9) in my native language, which speeds up typing a lot.
Consult your phone operator in order to find out which are the correct settings & access point, if you want to use the Internet capabilities. Otherwise you'll end up not being able to use anything else than SMS.
Apart from Internet connectivity, this phone does not offer much else for me. It has polyphonic ringtones (can use MP3 & mid format), but you can't use it for storing musing & pictures, because the memory space is very limited (4 MB). Apart from this, it has no IR or Bluetooth connectivity, & it can't use memory cards.
The other regular phone features are implemented in the good old Nokia style, which is well known & praised a lot. The only little drawback is the ringer volume is a bit too low, which makes me loose some calls from time to time.

A very pretty design, but on a sunny day the black screen cover makes a good make-up mirror. I can't use it outdoors, & I'm replacing it.

An OK basic mobile but some irritating omissions from my previous even more basic 1100 which DID have voice dialing & assignable ring tones which were very useful. Main problem is that the ring tone volume even on max is too low & I keep missing calls & it is not just my phone I see other reviews complain of this. How can a big outfit like Nokia get something so simple so wrong?

As this phone is at the entry level I am happy with the design & features but I am very disappointed about the usability of the phone outdoors in bright sunlight. The display is quite dull & on bright days the screen is unreadable.

No fuss telephone. All the features you need in a phone which is to make a phone call! No need for camera, no need for Mp3 player. Just a simple user friendly phone with some style & color!

Fantastic - just what is needed. Thank God Nokia still produce a compact phone without needing to cram in hundreds of useless "features". Who wants to pay for an MP3 player & a camera on a phone? I use a real MP3 player & a camera with a decent lens & resolution.
Its a great looking phone in my opinion, its good to see I can still buy a phone designed for *gasp* TALKING TO PEOPLE.

I will not be getting this excuse for a mobile phone as it is far too basic & featureless by anyone's means. I am in shock that Nokia are still designing such basic phone for today's mobile phone users. This has a basic screen, no camera, no video features, no connectivity, no Bluetooth wireless connectivity, no 3G, only a dual band network, no music features, no MP3 player, no radio, no way not a phone for me or anyone I know.

Average looking phone, should be good as it is a Nokia. I am wanting a bog standard phone for my sons 11th birthday & this would be great in silver for him. I am not sure if the Nokia 2610 is available in the UK yet, but I think it would be fairly priced as it has such bog standard features.
