I purchased this as two phones I had previously had packed up & they both had cameras, Bluetooth, MP3 & stuff which became a novelty & boring so I wanted something simple, cheap, but style wise 2010.
To start off this phone looks & feels great in your hand. It's got nice rounded edges & the touchpad if a little bit fiddly looks decent enough & gets the job done. The screen has a good brightness to it & the keys look nice when lit up.
For features it has three games, snake, beach rally & Sudoku, snake being the best one. A clever flashlight which could come in handy & looks cool. My favourite thing though is the FM radio. This is great because I can listen to BBC radio 1 or 4 easily or any others & I can even change stations on the headphones cord or phone. Plus it can be played on loudspeaker, although headphones must be plugged in for this but this isn't bad.
Other things are just general settings & you can also personalise your wallpaper with many too choose from to fit with your mood. There are also plenty of funky ringtones & several message tones to choose from. Other extras include calculator, converter, spreadsheet for planning stuff like shopping budget, calendar, countdown timer, stopwatch & a ringtone composer which I know nothing about yet.
Overall though it's a great little phone that's user friendly to all ages, has simple yet pleasant features that you would expect for the price & has a very good battery life.

Nokia 1661 is a basic phone, so don't get too ambitious on the feature set. You get alarm clock, calendar, stopwatch, countdown timer, currency & unit converter, budget spreadsheet, multimedia & text messaging & vibrate mode. There are 32 polyphonic ringtones to choose from & there is also a composer for making your own ringtones. Other features worth mentioning are flashlight & FM radio. The flashlight is not that powerful but it comes in handy in power cuts.

I finally found silent by pressing the power button but can't get it to come off of silent. I can't return it to factory set because I have no clue what my security code is or where to find it. Silly phone.

To increase the sound you have to select the radio logo on the menu page, once on that use the navigation key L or are to increase or decrease the volume. You need to go to radio mode every time to adjust volume a pain, but you get what you pay for, hope this helps. Enjoy. P.S I love mine, great phone for the dosh.

Ignore all the negative reviews.
The phone works fine, volume is fine too, these people just don't know how to adjust the volume using 4 way button (left & right gets it done).
The micro USB jack on the side of the phone is NOT connected, you will not be able to connect to a computer.
Buttons are easy to use with a real man sized hand as you just use the edge of your fingernail.
Loudspeaker works fine too.
Remember this is a very inexpensive phone designed to be used for pre-pay or disposable.
I am quite happy using it for my regular phone.
Phone comes with a shipping screen cover, leave it on & just snip off the pull tab as screen scratches easily.
Flashlight is nice touch but has an odd, irregular beam. You will have to hope that the monster standing right in front of you in a pitch black room will pause long enough for you to scan its entire height up & down for appropriate reaction.
I won't keep any contact list info on the phone, instead I will only leave it on previous SIM card in case I need to ditch phone etc.

A very sweet & cute phone to use, its lighting effects are very appealing & the slim pocket fitting design only contributes to its aesthetics.

I bought this phone as a replacement as I have sent my Nokia 2330 off for repair. The only problem I seem to be having with it, is when I am on the phone it goes silent & the other person can't hear me. Anyone know why this is!

Can someone please tell me how to permanantly change it to slow text not fast text because everytime I want to write a message I have to change it.

I am a starter with phones but my mum & dad got this one, it's my first phone & it's so simple to use I have sent loads of texts with it & id also say the Vodafone freedom pack is all you need for a starter its 300 texts & a 100 minutes every time you top up.

Great for the money.Simple, robust & decent battery life, just wish it would let me use more than 11 characters for names & contacts.

It may be cheap but it is still poor value for money. You buy this to make calls & nothing else but it struggles to get a signal even when really near a base station.
Buy a Nokia 1208 which is just as cheap but has decent audio for both sides of the conversation.

This phone is alright until you find yourself in a low reception area, compared to the reception on my works colleagues phones, who were getting two or three bars, I had none. The volume on my phone is so bad that if somebody is talking alongside you, you can't hear the caller. That is at maximum volume.

I bought this phone just for basic calling & texts & it has completely satisfied me. Even the radio on it is really good, & for just £9.99 from the Orange shop you just can't go wrong. It reminds me of the good old 3310 which was indestructible. This is exactly the same. I am a student & the clumsy one, but this just doesn't seem to break.
Overall I think this was a great buy. I would recommend it to everyone who is looking for a simple texting & calling phone.
Oh & to put your phone onto silent, go to the menu screen, then go onto settings, the profiles & click on the silent profile. Hope that helps :).

Finally an acceptable answer to the often muttered wish 'why can't I just get a phone that calls & texts?'
Having gone through a whole host of 3 to 400 pound contract phones over the last 5 or so years I realized that none of them lasted, I still used my iPod for mp3s, took a digital camera out with me on a night out & within a month always stopped playing the games & using the Internet, essentially like many of my friends I was paying through the nose for features I never used.
The final straw came with the advent of touch screen phones, I have had 3 & each one has made calling & texting more difficult in some way & I began to pine for the old days of the 3210.
I have had this phone for nearly a year & honestly not treated it well, it's cheap & it doesn't look too bad for it, there's no fake silver or coloured plastic to wear through so it still looks near new & absolutely nothing has gone wrong with it, no odd quirks that you forgive but deep down loathe. The phone is basic & there doesn't seem to be anything to go wrong, even the buttons that felt cheap when I got it haven't deteriorated & calls are just as clear.
The only negative for the phone is found in the os, create a text message, send it, then open it again & you now have to delete the old message before sending the new one, also hitting reply doesn't select that persons number, that one can take some getting used to but I accept that these are personal taste & a few years ago was the Nokia standard.

Bought this phone for my wife as her other phone packed up, she just wanted a basic type to keep in touch. This phone is just the job, nice looking & easy to use. It has enough features to do all the basics & she is well happy. The only thing that I can't figure out with this model is how to turn the ringtone to silent mode, if anyone knows could they please post a review.

I am so excited about this phone (& the chance to review it). My old one broke, & this was only $20 at Target as a prepaid wireless phone. I love the screen, it has really nice nature photos to put & change. I love the phone's simplicity. I don't need an MP3 player, & I don't know how to use the gadgets anyway.
It even has a spreadsheet for entering how much money you spend, & a flashlight! & you can compose your own ringtones, something I've never seen in a phone before.
One thing negative is that the ringer is really quiet, & I've missed several calls. Also, the earpiece is pretty small, & I have to work pretty hard to position it so that I can hear the caller.
But, besides that, I am really happy with the phone.
Anyway, I like it much better than the Nokia music phone that I dropped into a glass of water (by accident). Vive la Nokia!

It's a basic, moderately attractive looking phone with the familiar Nokia o/s. If all you do is call & text it'll do the job nicely, especially given the price.
The keypad feels a bit crunchy & you get the letters wrong in texts occasionally (I have small thumbs too), I end up using my thumbnails to be sure of the right key presses.
On the plus side, phone calls are much louder than my old 6300 & I can hear what people are saying without having to put my finger in the other ear.

I've never heard the phone ring. I've set it on normal, loud, vibrating & it doesn't let me know when a call is coming in. It always says silent. Very frustrating. Calls to people work fine.

This phone is great for the price the extras such as flash light & calendar not to mention the built in alarm clock & it's a great phone, clear sounds with incredible clarity much better than my previous Sony a very nice buy. Simple & affordable no frills phone!

This phone is no good if you live in a poor reception area. I've always had Nokia's & usually managed to get by, but this phone won't work at all unless you're at the top of the village. My wife's old 3410 can usually get at least one bar of signal power, I assumed that with advances in aerial technology the 1661 would be as good even though it's cheap. I was wrong. Shame, as it's a nice little phone & got all the features I need, I.e. Make calls & text.

Used our £10.50 Orange phone fund payg credit to fund the purchase, with £1.50 change, after our old trusty Nokia 3100 died. Well, we don't need photos, Bluetooth or the NET, & it's great. Nokia's user interface is such that if you've had one Nokia it's so easy to pick up another. The 1661 sill has predictive which we like a nice screen. The keys are a little more fiddly than the clunky 3100 & the screen turns off quicker than we like but all in all this cheap & cheerful mobile does what it says on the tin & more.

No apparent facility for removing operator logo which almost obscures the menu. Any suggestions for removing this logo? Otherwise, an excellent low expense basic phone. Useful as a backup for your main phone if needing charged.

I am the type of person that is obsessed with phones. yup, and I don't know why. I've been through a lot of high grade phones like a LG KU990 Viewty, which was my very very good phone, and I've had 7 phones in a year. I mean for a young guy, that's a lot. But hey, I just bought one of these phones at bond and bond for only 99 bucks, it came with a new SIM pack and a car charger which is a plus. Now, the phone itself, I find it really, really good, in fact it looks like it's a classic series of Nokia range. And I reckon that this is a much more civilised phone to look at, not like the Nokia 1208 and the Nokia 1650.
Ohh and one thing, it's shiny. For me, there are no negative sides about this phone because we're talking about low class phones here, and the features of this phone are fantastic. A torch and a radio is a plus!! I do also text a lot. I consume 2,000 texts in about a week. And I must say that, the keypad is nicely laid out and is very easy to press, although it's quite small, practise is all u need.
Battery life is exceptional. It's just, I don't know, I'm speechless. Ha ha ha ha!!! Even the large 1.8" inch screen is a plus while the Nokia 1208 has a 1.5".
Overall, I will give it a 100%!!! Cheers!!

You get quite a bit for what is a very basic, entry level phone. Easy to use, great battery life & the torch is a useful unexpected extra. No frills, great price, no nonsense, exactly what I wanted for a small layout.

Phone is very good, but I don't like the sound of its keys such that Tick Tick, which is very disturbing.
& also little hard keys as compare to other Nokia phone, but design is very very good for the price.

The design is cool but it doesn't have many features, secondly the voice at maximum is low (compared to other phones) the ringtones are not loud. But the phone has a smart & a decent look that's all.
