I am undecided by these conflicting reviews. My contract is up for renewal with Vodafone tomorrow, or I can wait 70 days & get the G1.
I'll be using it for Internet, & texts mainly.
Interested in the Samsung Tocco Ultra & the G1. I used the G1 in a T mobile store last week as they had one out & it seemed quite good. But the Tocco Ultra has the same functions overall & I could get that tomorrow if I wanted. At the moment I have the Samsung U900 Soul & it's fantastic! Big fan of Samsung's.
Any info on what would be better?

I am so thankful that T Mobile have allowed me to return this handset. Mine suffered from problems to do with freezing, needing a reset. I assume this is limited to the one I had, & not a design fault. However, it has a number of issues, which made me decide to change it, back to a trust Sony Ericsson.
Firstly, the Gmail interaction is good, in fact, too good, because it forces you to pare down, & fix, your contacts list. Maybe not such a bad thing then!
Secondly, the much vaunted maps feature is annoying, partially because it's not that accurate, but also because it uses meters not miles!
Thirdly, the reception & audio quality are excellent, & much better than HTC were in the past. However, if you are old fashioned, & want to make calls, it can be a pain, especially in the dark as the menu button is not illuminated (strange over sight). Also, the mechanism for holding & swapping calls is convoluted, & in the week I had it, I never made it work. As for making calls where you need to press buttons (say, T Mobile), it's a right pain, as the key pad disappears!
Fourthly, for the me, the bad point, was the short battery life. Forget the bumf, the reality is that, if, like me, you make a lot of calls, this handset is really really not for you. I would have it charged in the morning, & by the afternoon it was out of charge already.
Fifth, for meeting etc, I found the lack of profile a right pain.
In short, if you want an iPhone like handset, to show off to your mates, text, make the occasional call, & such like, then it's great. Otherwise, if you primarily need your handset for calls, then forget it.

I really like this phone, it has many of the same features as the Apple iPhone. I have a Nokia E71 for work & my HTC Dream G1 for play. I cannot fault either of them.

I bought this phone on contract 2 days ago, I am not impressed at all, I have had the Sony Ericsson W660i for the past 18 months & that's an amazing phone, I thought I made a good move getting the G1 but it's pretty useless, no Bluetooth no video no picture messaging.
It's a good start for android but it needs some serious improvement. Fortunately, t mobile said I can switch it for another mobile on the same contract tariff because I am not paying £30 a month for 18 months for this mobile.

I really like this phone & I have had plenty of other's all makes. I use to search every week till I got the G1 on T mobile
Took me a while to sort it all out, but now it's working great, best phone I have had for ages, it's got it all & with Andoid improving all the time, it can only get better & better.
The thing to do with the battery, use on no percent brightness, you can still use no problem, also get Power Management, it helps on battery life too, I am now getting 2 to 3 days between charges.
I have seen, what looks like the new G2, doesn't have the keyboard, I have tried the apple app, but once you get use to keyboard, it becomes just as fast as other mobile phones.
All in all, a very good phone, stopped me looking for my next phone all the time.

I was really excited when I got this phone, I had waited a month to get one on T mobile, but reality set in & disappointment rules the day. Apart from the appalling battery life that I had expected, there was a splurge of shortcoming & bugs that surprised me as I thought Google had more sense than to put out a half baked product.
- You can't Bluetooth to other or from other mobile phones no services supported, even though you can connect & pair with them. DUHHH!
- Importing from a T mobile SIM card left me with incorrectly formatted contact names, wrongly labelled phone numbers, (everything labelled as a mobile) & the same number showing three times in each contact.
- Start the sync option & suddenly I had many contacts showing twice.
- Can't delete a contact without opening it first & on the G1's fiddly keyboard that is a real pain.
- Bulk deleting contacts can only be done by using the sync option & selecting nothing to sync with.
- No option to back up on a PC, lose your phone & lose everything
The real clincher for me was the fact that T mobile told me it could act as a tethered modem so I could have broadband access on my laptop on the move. WRONG! Not such option exists.
The poorly developed G1 is now winging its way back from where once it came, can't quite figure out if I should try the Samsung Omnia or revert to a trusty Sony Ericsson & get a C905. Watch this space.

I must admit that I am surprised to find so many negative reviews out there about this phone. I had this phone for 2 weeks. It died after that unfortunately, stopped charging, so I am sending it back.
I loved it but at the same time really was not convinced about its quality. It stopped recognising the SD card so no more photos, then it died altogether.
I had the N95 before & was sick of it always breaking, the G1 seeded no better.
However, the design & functionality was fun & I do kind of miss it. Who knows, I may order another one.

Looking at this phone to buy & read both your reviews, thanks. Just to confirm would your recommend this phone to someone that doesn't want the iPhone but is looking for something similar.

This is the real iPhone alternative.
The Bluetooth is great & connects pretty much with everything. I did have a problem connecting the phone with my now obsolete Nokia, but with everything else it's well simple to use.
This phone doesn't have the nonsense of predictive text. Using messaging is a real pleasure on the keyboard & Google is absolutely right in not having an option of a touch screen keyboard. All the other phones that have, users find difficult to use because the keys are so small.
The phone has complete options for messaging, such as forwarding, adding attachments etc. Pressing the menu button presents clear options below immediately.
The call log is great. There are clear symbols for all the types of calls (missed, received etc) & so knowing everything that's happened with regards to calls is cool.
The phone has dedicated buttons below so to make calls & accessing all the features using the touch screen can easily be done with one hand. The only time both hands are needed is when using the keyboard.
When you click on the home button, then you really do go to the home screen & then you can then go back to the menu & start using any application from the beginning.
The biggest selling point for me is the Android OS. Because it's open source, any software limitations the phone may have will be dealt with by developers very quickly. So already there is an application to support exchange & make business users happy.
If you're a poser then buy the iPhone, if you want to actually use a phone for all your needs, get this.

This is my favourite phone yet. I like the fact that you are not tied to the apple copyright rubbish when it comes to music, that if there is something missing or a fix that you can download it from the android market place & not wait on someone like apple. The texting is great it I like the buttons because it saves the fingerprint issue on the screen. The screen is just as good & responsive as the iPhone & less expensive. I like the fact that as the battery dies you can buy another one unlike the iPhone where you have to buy their warranty & send it in. Plus if you decide later to switch carriers you can unlock it & take it with you. Memory is great especially if you're willing to pay for it you can upgrade to 16GB & soon to 32GB, although who has that much rubbish or music, the phone is a pure joy when it comes to web surfing, yet they need to find a adobe plug in for it sometime, I suspect that some of the plug ins are left out so that when everyone is on the Internet they won't kill the bandwidth. It will only get better it is the first of many new android phones.
As with all things there are drawbacks. One is the creaking of the screen from what I have seen is a little plastic used in protecting the phone & it may also come from the fact that I left the plastic on to protect the underside of the phone. It's noticeable but not enough for me to take it back. The others is it seems that multiple recipient texting is an issue. It will tell you that it didn't send it but does & by the time you try again your friends are yelling at you to stop sending the same text multiple times. This may be a network issue like the constant intermittent 3G connection. I live in the heart of 3G land & yet I barely get 1 or 2 bars & if I do it's only for a couple of seconds & then it goes back to Edge all of the time. After already doing the SIM card swap trick from T mobile I am convinced that it is the Network at this time since T mobile is still new to 3G. Hopefully these issues get worked out.
