Reviewer: Terry Byford - Birmingham, UK

I have rated my Nexus according to my views of the three headings to report on. I have given 100% for features, but this is not a comment as to its performance in all areas, but simply what is on offer, nor do I invite comparison with any other phone. For an overview of its full spec, simply refer to Mobile Phone Review's own review.

This phone is truly a delight to use. It feels well in the hand with just sufficient weight to lend it an air of quality. The screen is an absolute marvel, more than a mere looking at its 800x480 resolution would indicate. It is a quality screen, which shines for normal phone use, & for replaying video, providing the source quality is up to the job. Pinch to zoom is featured & its touch response is excellent.

It comes with the latest fully specified Bluetooth capability, (unlike the Google G1) 2G, 3G & WiFi, nothing unusual here, many phones come similarly specified, but hidden within its sleek casing, is Qualcomm's 1Ghz processor, & it is this which, for the moment at least, makes the Nexus the leader of the pack. 3G performance is superb & couple this with the beta version of Opera 5 for mobiles, Internet browsing is blisteringly fast. Couple this processor with 512 meg of RAM one can have a number of apps open at the same time making the Nexus 1 truly a mobile marvel.

Talking of apps, there are thousands in the Android market, more than enough to satisfy most users, if what you are interested in are apps that are truly useful, rather than fun or gimmicks. If these interest you, well, erm, they are there too! This brings me to a surprising omission from the Nexus out of the box, it doesn't come with a file manager. But, not to worry, download Linda from the Android market, as this is truly excellent.

It features voice command, & whilst not 100% accurate, it depends on clear enunciation & correct use of grammar to work properly, it is no mere gimmick. Want to visit a website? Merely say its name & the phone will take you straight to Google's page listing from where you select your choice. Using Google translate, speak the word or phrase you want translating, select to which of the 50 or so languages you wish to translate to, & there it is. Want to hear what it sounds like? No problem, simply press the icon to listen.
This voice to text feature will work in any web page or application where there is a text input field.

Voice quality for a caller is excellent thanks to the noise cancellation feature that makes calling from even noisy surroundings clear for the person receiving.

Of course, being a product from Google, one would expect it to perform superbly with any Google app, & it does. Gmails come straight into the phone automatically, no having to access or search for them manually.

The phone comes with the now standard features of camera, video recorder & player, & music player & uses the standard 3.5mm headphone jack to allow use of higher quality headsets. With a high quality recording & headphones the Nexus displays very high music replay quality. The small built in speaker is very clear for music replay, but of course with absolutely no bass. It is though very useful for checking out any MP3 music download prior to purchase when you don't have your headphones available.

The camera, whilst of 5 meg resolution, & video capture, I would class as adequate, but no more than this. Video is limited to just 20 fps, which is really not good. It does have led flash, which can help with near field subjects in low light, but there seems to be no way to power it down so that extreme close ups can be severely overexposed. The camera does autofocus so there should be no missed shots because they were out of focus.

I found battery life to be good, even in view of its power hungry performance envelope. I manage 6 hours of nonstop 3G use, & by switching to airplane mode for music replay, the battery charge icon hardly seems to change.

To summarise, I would rate the phone highly, with some reservations only about its camera & video performances. These are of no import to me as I use proper photographic tools for these purposes, but I am aware that many do rely on their camera phones now & don't carry a separate digital camera or video cam. Equally there are those who would not be fazed by their omission on a phone!

Clearly, if you are into all things Google, then this must be the phone for you, but I am sure that with its very fast processor & other superb features it should be on anyone's shortlist.
